Do you know what's the biggest obstacle preventing many from learning Spanish to fluency?
It's a lack of vocabulary!
Reading in Spanish is perhaps the most effective way to build up your vocabulary in Spanish.
With our book Spanish Short Stories for Beginners and Intermediate Learners, you can practice reading Spanish while working on your Spanish vocabulary and grammar skills.
The stories contained within this book were written with both beginner and intermediate Spanish learners in mind, so you will find plenty of new vocabulary and Spanish grammar to learn without having to worry about the level of the reading being too difficult.
Our Spanish short stories only use the real Spanish language used by native speakers every day so that you can learn Spanish the natural way. They have been written and edited by native speakers from South America.
As others have said, this is not a collection of short stories but a series of short chapters about the daily life of the main character, Alejandro. The level indicated is about right, somewhere between advanced beginner and low intermediate. You have a short written section, followed by a vocabulary section, then some comprehension questions. The last section is the same story in English.
Good Short Stories for Extensive Spanish Language Learning
I have by now checked out just about every book in this foreign language study series. For their purpose, I think they are designed well. These books are meant for extensive language learning, which is another name for immersion learning. Here, the student is not meant to look up every single unknown word or phrase but should try to pick up the language by context and repetition as we do when we learn our native language. Even though this is the intent for this book, the authors do include a vocabulary list of words in Spanish with the English translation. One of the ways that they recommended using this list is to briefly read through it before you attempt to read the passage so that you will have a certain level of familiarity with more words in the short stories. I definitely recommend that learning option myself. Each story is set up in a similar way: the story in Spanish, the English-Spanish vocabulary list, several questions about the story written in Spanish, and the English translation of the story. The book has a very brief introductory section, which tells you how to use the book and distinguishes between intensive and extensive language learning. I definitely recommend a book like this if you are at least a late beginner or intermediate learner. A true rank beginner would have so little vocabulary or concept of sentence structure and grammar that the stories would make little sense. But if you are of that slightly later learning stage, this would help you whether you are learning the language in an official course or are trying to teach yourself.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This book by Language Guru is a beneficial one for learning Spanish. While the title just refers to short stories, the content is continuous following the life of a man named Alejandro. This gives the book more of an authentic book reading feel as opposed to a collection of short stories that do not at all relate to one another. All the situations Alejandro encounters are based on real-life such as going to the doctor, trying to find a new exercise routine, meeting new friends, and dealing with the stresses of work and college. Due to this fact, the vocabulary learned is very useful. Unfortunately, the book's ending has a bizarre cliffhanger. Instead of telling the reader what the outcome of Alejandro's struggles at university are, the author proceeds to cut things off by saying that it isn't the question of whether or not Alejandro makes it through the university exams but rather whether or not you (the reader) will keep on studying Spanish.

4.4 stars This is a good resource for those with an intermediate knowledge of the language and would like to focus on the Spanish that is spoken in Latin America. There are some expressions contained in the stories that are different than those used in other Spanish speaking countries. I would not say this is a book for beginners. The ten chapters encompass a variety of different topics and offer a nice range to grow one’s vocabulary. The grammar is more advanced than beginner Spanish and the constructions are not explained. The stories themselves are highlighted with challenging vocabulary and translated in their entirety to ensure comprehension. After the end of each selection, there are a few comprehension questions, these are not translated, with the correct responses given in an answer key at the end of the book. This is a nice change of pace from a “grammar” workbook but it would be a good idea to include some grammar explanations. By finishing this short story book I am now encouraged to continue reading more short books as the results are instantaneous!. I enjoyed learning about Alejandro's life and can now add a book to my completed books for this year as well as 89 pages to my total pages read :) . muchas gracias.
I found that if you already know basic Spanish this would be helpful to learn more difficult words. There is a vocabulary list at the end of each story along with questions to gauge your level of understanding.
I love languages in general and Spanish in particular. Stories is an awesome way to increase your vocabulary and if the stories are interesting as these are you will find learning fun.
