Urdu Script Primer for Non-Urdu Speakers: اردو

Rate this book
Urdu, a sister language to Hindi, is one of the official languages of both Pakistan and India, and one of the keys to understanding the northern region of South Asia- including Bollywood song lyrics. Much of the great poetry and literature of South Asia from the last 500 years were written in Urdu. This book is a unique, fellow-traveler’s guide to learning Urdu script. It’s a shortcut, really! I teach you how to create the letters, comprehend and create words and proper pronunciation, along with many step by step examples. In addition, I point out aspects, tricks, cultural tips and phrases which I have found particularly helpful. I also compare this to Devanagari (Hindi script) for Hindi speakers.

I always recommend this book to my students who are either non-native Urdu speakers or of Pakistani descent living abroad and thus with no real knowledge of the language. It is just the book for them.
