Extraordinary Henry & The Madness of the String in Yellow

Rate this book
Henry is no ordinary cat.
He tries his best to be, but isn’t. In fact, he is a rather odd cat. His origins lie beyond the stars, far away, off into the vast nothingness of the grand universe. Also, he’s very in tune with strange things and paranormal phenomena. Which is good, because Odessa, TX isn’t your average run-of-the-mill town either. With its interdimensional portals, nightly shadow people sightings and ghost cars, among other things, you could say the town and Henry are a match made in heaven.
Henry soon finds out his attunement to the weird and fantastical makes him the only one capable of uncovering the mysteries of a strange video broadcast that’s turning the city’s cats into horrible monstrosities. He is determined to find out who’s behind this devious plot and stop them. This will lead him on a dark path hovering in between worlds, on the flimsy tightropes of yellow string separating sanity and madness.

Nick Vossen was raised on blockbuster films from the 80s and 90s as well as fantasy and sci-fi novels, comics and games. No matter the medium, his love for storytelling grew ever larger. Having always had a fascination with the fantastical and weird, he quickly grew fond of authors such as Terry Pratchett, H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman and many more. During the winter of 2017 Nick released an anthology of short, weird fiction entitled The Fissures Between Worlds, which delves into the strange places on Earth where time does not flow as it should. It was received quite favourably, and so Nick’s desire to tell more stories grew. He has since been privileged to appear in several other anthologies, magazines and short story compilations and has quite a few projects still in the works. His biggest fascinations and inspirations are old forgotten woodlands, the deepest depths of the oceans and the unsettling, uncanniness of retro futurism.

Nick graduated in Media- and Culture studies at Utrecht University in The Netherlands. He is currently working as a freelance creative writer and author. He also frequently works on projects in the Dutch indie-film industry, putting his talents to use in art-direction, set-dressing and of course screenwriting. His first novel, The Swansong Conspiracy (book 1 of the Eldritch Twins series) was released at the end of 2020 by Parliament House Press and well received. The book series offers a unique blend of coming-of-age comedy, supernatural horror and mystery.

Who Says Cats Don’t Have 9 Lives?

Well written, yet rife with typos that should be corrected. The story still came through as coherent. Snappy pacing and good dialogue with Henry not being an ordinary cat. With humans being ignorant and oblivious to the cosmic dangers lurking within the town of Odessa. The cats were vanishing by the numbers. And Henry needs to figure out the problem and fast. At least, he’d had some unexpected help. It’s a fun dark cosmic fantasy. Strongly recommended. Looking forward to reading more of Henry’s adventures.

Henry is special. He is the cute, sometimes somewhat stubborn feline protagonist with whom you immediately fall in love. Just like all his cat friends. He lives in Odessa but lately strange things are happening there. Cats disappear and strange creatures appear. Henry is determined to save his beloved city, his human and his cat friends from the crazy events that plague Odessa.

I love stories like this. The pace is fast, a trademark of the author when you look at his other work. (Which you should certainly do.) That makes it easy to read the story. If you're looking for something to read that's just a little bit different then this is definitely a must.
