I find it hard to give an accurate rating to anthologies and this collection is an excellent example of why! When the writing was good it was SO GOOD! But it was leveled out by other works that just didn’t work for me. I probably actually rate this a 3.5 but I’ll give it a 4 because the works I did love , I loved wholeheartedly. A good amount of the short stories felt like they were more prologues for larger works and not a singular tale. ‘The Beginning’ by Lela Robichaux is a perfect example of that. I was already sucked into the world she created and would love to see the story progress. In the same vein, ‘Lily’ by John Brizzi was FANTASTIC! I didn’t want the story to end and I hope that I can see more of Adam Franks in the future. Both Robichaux and Brizzi were excellent at creating compelling worlds in such a short span of time. As for the poetry, ‘Dedicated Builder’ by Maria J Crenshaw gave me such a lovely feeling of fondness and I caught myself smiling at the end. ‘Fairy Tales’ by D. L. Holmes really stuck out to me as well. It was short and simple but very eloquently related the world of Fae to our own realm of emotions. “Time & Nature” by Tiffany Pennywell made me reflect back on a similar experience I’ve had and made me reminisce. It was beautifully done. Both Holmes and Pennywell are authors I have read from before, but I was pleasantly surprised to see such a different and fresh perspective change from the works I’ve previously seen. There were a few poems that did not sit well with me, particularly by one author, but overall I was massively impressed by this collection and the showcase of local talent. As a Shreveport native myself , who has had the privilege of attending a meeting with this group, I was so proud with everything that was presented. The accompanying photography done by Tiffany Pennywell was a delightful break from the narrative. She was able to capture a still beauty of our city that’s often left unseen amongst all the activity. I particularly found the photo on page 122 lovely, as I know that area very well and still was enamored with the perspective she took. Highly recommend to locals and non-locals alike.
