Dave Hollis, CEO of the Hollis Co. and husband of #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hollis, refutes the lies people believe but don't talk about, keeping them stuck in a rut, and points the way for readers to finally start living the best versions of their lives.
When Rachel Hollis began writing the #1 New York Times bestseller Girl, Wash Your Face, her husband Dave bristled at her transparency about her self-deceptions. Then he had a revelation: women aren't the only ones who believe lies. Both women and men buy into a host of lies that keep them from reaching their potential, often against a backdrop of ingrained ideas about how they should or shouldn't act, how they should or shouldn’t reach for help, or how they show up for life.
Dave knows this personally. He believed all the lies, too. He found himself stuck in a rut, unmotivated, unfulfilled, and a version of himself he didn't like, all while being skeptical he could actually do anything about it. Then, he began to wake up. In his new book, he talks honestly about topics people aren't normally honest about--his impulse to solve instead of listen, his struggle to accept help or admit he needs it, even his insecurities about being a parent. Unpacking the untruths he once believed, he reveals how those lies held him back and outlines the tools that helped him change his life. Offering encouragement, challenge, and a hundred moments to laugh at himself, Dave points the way for others to drop bogus ideas and finally start living the best versions of their lives too.
Update: I have now read this book twice. TWICE! My last review was based on half of the book. Here is my final review.
Get Out Of Your Own Way
Yes. Yes. A thousand times, YES!
This book is witty, funny, honest, sad, truthful, and is spot on. Buy this book, borrow this book, steal it from a friend. But get your hands on this book if you truly want a life lived with your eyes and heart wide open to everything you've ever dared to dream about.
This book gave me many different emotions, and some of them were downright surprising. One of these feelings was uncomfortable and slightly scary. Dave jumps into the ocean that is a marriage and what you need to do to get an exceptional marriage.
Now I had been writing this as an everyday goal. I wrote: I have an exceptional marriage. I proclaimed that this is the truth! Each and every day, I have strived for this in my relationship. Reading this book has blown my mind and the idea that I have currently have an exceptional marriage. What Dave has done is opened my eyes to the idea that a marriage is so much more than the everyday interactions and goings-on.
"What the heck!!" -says the married women reading this ^^^
Dave's book has given me the tools I didn't know that I needed, and its shown me marriage from the other side of the metaphorical table. Mind Blowen.
The marriage and relationship portion of this book is just one example of how Dave's straightforward point of view has helped me dive more into this thing we all call life.
I need to reiterate. This book is witty, funny, honest, sad, truthful, and is so spot. Buy this book, borrow this book, steal it from a friend. But get your hands on this book if you truly want a life lived with your eyes and heart wide open to everything you've ever dared to dream of and for.
Get ready for a belt full of new tools because, guess what, you've got work to do, and Dave's book is going to help make you amazing. I am 100% ready and excited to apply all of the things from this book to my life.
(Note: I still swear that his intro alone will hook you. I related so much so that I found myself crying, looking hard at my own life choices, and taking notes. That was just in the intro!!)
I want to give a special thank you to HarperCollins for the gift of the advanced readers' copy of this book. I am honored to have this special sneak peek and before I knew I would have this honor I already preordered Dave's book. Now my husband can read his own book without my highlights and crazy tabs all about.
Amazing, amazing, amazing read!!! Dave Hollis is coming in HOT ON THE HEELS of his wife Rachel in the personal growth arena with his first (of many I'm sure) book! Even though I believe his main target audience is technically men, this book literally has something for everyone.
I quite literally could not put it down. I feel like it was a deeper read than Rachel's GSA & GWYF and with none of the fluff, which I appreciated. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Rachel Hollis fan too but I felt like Dave is more of a deep thinker/writer and less of a "just do it & don't think about it - chop chop" kind of person than Rachel is - - and I was able to relate to this much more than someone who's intrinsically motivated like Rachel.
It was also really interesting to read Dave's stories about his time with Disney... he's got a super approachable writing style despite being a multi-millionaire and I didn't feel at all like it came from a place of arrogance.
I 150% recommend this book & cannot wait for it to be released to the masses in March!!! (And - if you preorder the book now, you'll get immediate access to Dave's hour long eCourse about finding your why!)
I received a free copy of this book from HarperCollins Leadership as a member of the launch team but am under no obligation to post anything but what I honestly think of the book.
If you’re looking for a motivational read about living up to your potential and chasing your dreams, look no further. Dave Hollis’s debut Get of of Your Own Way is a refreshing and relatable read full of humor and honesty.
Hollis has 19 chapters with 19 different lies he’s faced in his life, and at the end of the chapter, there is a list of three things that’s helped him. That part will be so helpful to so many people. Dave’s personal stories throughout this book made me love him even more. Let’s be clear. I love Rachel Hollis, but I’m not a Rachel. I’m a Dave. When he talked about enneagrams, love languages, and his motivation- I was like, yep. Totally me. I love when I can see myself in some small way within a book.
You could tell Dave Hollis put his heart in this book. It was real, authentic, and I loved his voice. Whereas his wife Rachel’s book was geared more toward women IMO, Dave’s book will be great for both men and women alike. It shows straight off the bat that self help is not only for broken people and wanting to better yourself and your life is something you should strive for daily.
I highlighted a ton of quotes and I’ll put a few of my favorites in the spoiler tag below. I recommend this book for any looking for a motivating read with lots of tips about living your best life!

This is a partial review because I am still waiting to read the other half of the book, but I had to come on and post this really fast.
Ok, so I have been a fan of Rachel Hollis for a while now. I helped launch GWYF and GSA and appreciated both. I have loved Dave and Rachel's Morning Show and they're so upbeat and honest and feels like they're the whole world's greatest cheerleader.
While this book seems mainly geared toward men (after all, we do have Rachels' books for us women), I believe everyone could gain something, learn something and take away something absolutely positive from this book. It's a pump-you-up, get you moving, stop making the excuses type of book that everyone needs.
I can't wait to finish the book and I'll come back and update as I'm finished, but wanted this review to help YOU decide to grab yourself a copy!! It's totally worth it. PS. I am grabbing a copy for my husband....shhhhhh. :)
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
I received an advanced ready copy from Harper Collins and have only read the first half of this book and already it is fire! Dave is such an inspiration. I love how he writes this book from the viewpoint of a skeptic. I think many of us can relate to that. If anyone is thinking he is riding on the coattails of Rachel, think again. He has his own success story with failure along the way.
I’m writing this to you just as you wrote this book just for me (and a few million other friends, but I know mainly for me). You rocked it. No, you KILLED IT. You poured everything into this book. It couldn’t have been easy, but WE do the hard things. WE DO THEM. We just do. Your book is the kick in the pants I needed. The lay on the couch in the dark and REALLY ask myself the hard questions kind of read. Yes, I may have sped through it because I couldn’t put it down, but I promise you I’ll go back and take notes. I don’t want to mess this up because I owe it to myself. You helped me see that. I deserved this book and so does every other lucky reader that chooses to soak this one in. Thank you.
I received an advanced copy of the book, however the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I became aware of Dave Hollis from reading GWYF and GSA. I became a fan because Dave's approach to self improvement matches my style of pragmatism. Dave also has an understanding of how to hack a preference for extrinsic motivation which I can also identify.
GOOYOW is a blend of motivation and good story. Dave speaks open and honestly about his stuggles with what he admits was a midlife crisis. Dave gives his tips and tricks he used to navigate a personally difficult time in his marriage and worklife.
I appreciate the view of self help/improvement through the perspective of a male voice.
I received an advanced reader copy received my HarperCollins Leadership.
Note: I am currently halfway through this book, which was provided to me at no cost by HarperCollins Leadership for my honest review prior to the official release date.
Having been a fan of Dave Hollis’ wife Rachel’s two books (Girl Wash your Face & Girl Stop Apologizing), I was ecstatic when I heard Dave was working on his own book. I have gotten glimpses into Dave’s thoughts and ideas by listening to the Hollis Podcasts (which, by the way, are great too and worth checking out!), and I’ve also been curious about Dave’s own story and his personal journey. Furthermore, what was it like for Dave to witness Rachel’s radical change in her worldview and, not only charge ahead in her quest for self-improvement, but also to do it publicly for the world to see?
In Get Out of Your Own Way, Dave digs deep into his own internal psyche with vulnerability, genuineness, and evening humor. The stories he tells will resonate with the reader, as Dave’s experiences tap into much of what we all grapple with in our shared human experience.
This book will stand on it’s own and apart from those written by Rachel. And for those already familiar with Rachel’s books and the Hollis’ endeavors, this is a delightful look at their life and work from the perspective of the (so far) lesser known half of this couple. Can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on a copy of this book when it comes out in March!
I have been eagerly awaiting this book as I have been an ardent follower of Dave's wife Rachel Hollis since someone handed me a copy of Girl, Wash Your Face. I have been fortunate enough to receive an Advanced Reader Copy and am currently at the half way mark. Fire! All I can say, pure FIRE!!!
From the moment I started listening to the Start Today Morning Show I felt a kinship with Dave more so than even Rachel. I was a true skeptic of the self help space. Seriously, why on Earth would I buy some book with some Yoo Rah Rah message in it from some other mere mortal and think it could provide me any answers to why my life isn't where it should be? The more I listened, the more I began to find myself saying, "huh, I didn't think of it that way." Their transparency as a couple pushed me out of my own way and into a world of let's do the work. Because of Dave Hollis' direct but completely open representation of his authentic self I believed that therapy could help even me. I am so grateful that I took that first step.
Folks - this book is a game changer. If you are a skeptic, if you think self help isn't for you, if you think you know you have all the right answers in life, then I challenge you to Get Out Of Your Own Way and give this book a read. Trust me when I say to you...it will change your life. Just pick up a copy and read it. Let's Gooooooo!!!!
Dave — if you’re reading this I have to say a huge thank you!! I really loved Rachel’s books but I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one. Thank you for your gut wrenching honesty. Thank you for the encouragement and for the kick in the pants. Thank you for writing your story.
For the rest of you - if you’re wondering if his book is as authentic and relatable as Rachel’s, I would say a resounding yes. Somehow for me, it went one step further to challenge me and inspire me to push past the boundaries that I have created for myself.
This book rounds out Rachel’s books and is the final nudge to dig deep and get moving!!
The only way the book could be improved would be to spend a week or two with them, bounding over hurdles and pushing past self- inflicted limitations to find Gods plan and love it to the fullest!
If you don’t get invited to spend a week with the Hilo’s family but want to learn from them, get Dave’s book. It’ll change your way of thinking for the good!!
Although I did receive a free ARC of this book, the review is completely honest. I can’t recommend this book enough.
So far the first half of this book is simply amazing . It was enlightening how real Dave was throughout this book. Bringing up so many tough topics that I have been searching for a long time to find a personal development book to cover. I’ve been reading a lot of personal development books recently and this one included everything I was looking for and more. It’s nice to hear things from his perspective. This book is pure gold and I can’t wait to read the rest.
AMAZING!! Dave Hollis nails it, just like his Partner Rachel in this fantastic book. From the minute you pick this book up you are hooked to continue reading. I got to read the first half as a ARC && cannot wait until the rest is released. I’m am DYING to finish. Dave is moving on up in this epic release.
I received this as part of a ARC from the Publisher.
I am fortunate enough to have received an advanced reader copy of Get Out Of Your Own Way from the publisher after being apart of Girl Stop Apologizing Launch Team, I am reading the first half of the book, it’s an easy read and even though it’s written from a male perspective, personal development is for everyone and all genders can identify with Dave’s story, since I’ve started reading the book, I have decided to sign up for an upcoming Emotion Focused Family Therapy series of workshops, excited to see where this leads because I need change! Everyday I taking baby steps to getting out of my own way!
I received an advance reader copy of this book (digital copy) as part of the launch team. #harpercollinsambassador
I found this to be a very easy and a great read. I loved how vulnerable Dave was in this book which made it easy to find the lies that he believed in his life so relatable. One of my favorite things about both Rachel and Dave Hollis is their ability to tell real truths even if they are embarrassing. It really does put them on the same level with us, which I believe makes their books easier to read and their advice better taken. While I didn't relate to every single lie he talked about in the book I did find each chapter to be interesting and the information on what he did to be helpful. It was nice to read such a straightforward book on what was going on and what to do in order to counteract those lies. I have definitely pre-ordered this book and would absolutely recommend it to others as well. You also get an e-course when you pre-order the book!
Could you walk away from the thing that is a pinnacle life achievement for most humans? Dave starts this book at the beginning, when he left Disney, moved to Texas, and founded The Hollis Co. with his wife.
This book has practical steps and actions for leveling UP, that go far beyond just saying, "you need to level-up." He tells you his recipe. It's not a secret. In the end though, it's up to you to go into the kitchen and cook up your own dream loves!
A big Mwah to Harper Collins for providing me with an ARC.
Note: I am currently halfway through this book, which was provided to me at no cost by HarperCollins Leadership for my honest review prior to the official release date.
I have been a fan of Dave Hollis’ wife Rachel’s Hollis ever I sense I watched Made for more in theaters. After I heard she had a few book out I read those and it’s my dream one day I’ll meet them.
I was ecstatic when I heard Dave was working on his own book. This book is so good and I’m half way through it. I was always curious about Dave’s journey and personal growth journey. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It’s a really good read.
I am currently half way through the book (I received an advanced readers copy by the amazing team at HarperCollins Leadership!) This book is amazing! It is every thing you need to start your year off strong. Told through personal stories, it is very relatable and touches every part of you. It sets your heart on fire for wanting more and actually achieving your goals.
**I received a free copy of this book from HarperCollins Leadership as a part of the launch team. All opinions posted are my own.**
Y'all...I loved this book! Dave and Rachel Hollis are both so incredibly good at being able to light fires in people's hearts. I've read both of Rachel's books and COULD.NOT.WAIT. to get my hands on Dave's! Now, I've read the first half and cannot wait to finish it!
I've been listening to their Start Today Morning Show Podcasts for awhile and, while I love them together, the days when it was Dave by himself spoke to me and fired me up the most. And that's exactly what he's done with his book.
There have been many times in my life when I've wondered "what's holding me back?" What's holding me back from chasing my dreams? Fear of failure? Fear of discouragement from others? Yes...but only because *I* am letting those fears hold me back. *I* am standing in my own way. And, through his book, Dave has shown me that I need to push past these things, work through it, take a chance, make a change, and g r o w as a person. He has shown me that I need to get out of my own way. ;-)
I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know.
Dave Hollis is incredibly relatable in Get Out of Your Own Way. He gets you hooked from the start, and makes you see everyone has their flaws, everyone goes through jealousy (even over their spouse) and they can get through it and be their best self (or strive to be anyway). He is great at describing his own flaws, and how he is working on himself, to be a better father, husband, and person he is proud of. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the first half of this book and cant wait to finish it. I hope you all do as well. I received an advance readers copy of this book, I received my copy from HarperCollins Leadership and I am making my own honest opinion about this. I love his wife Rachel Hollis and her books as well. They make a great team as parents, and as a couple.
I’m halfway through the book, and LOVE it!! Dave is vulnerable and relatable! He really puts it out there all the ways we self sabotage. Get ready to make the changes..... get ready to live your best life! 🙌
**I received a free copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Oh, the Hollises. I have a love-hate relationship with them. You can read my reviews of Rachel's books to see how my opinion has changed over the years. As an original fan-girl of Rachel's, I WANT to like everything they do. But the more "famous" they get, the harder it is for me.
This book, in particular, is a struggle for me. I'm not sure who the intended audience is. Ostensibly, it's men. But I can't imagine any man voluntarily purchasing or reading this book. Whoever the target audience is, I think the actual purchasers are going to be women who think their husbands/sons need to read this.
My biggest struggle with the book is how similar it is in tone to Rachel's books. I know they're best friends and spouses, but this reads as if they share a brain. Or a ghostwriter. Or as if Rachel wrote it for him (or at least heavily edited it).
For most people, I would suggest that you instead flip to the back of the book, to the bibliography, and read Dave's source material: High Performance Habits Mindset, by Carol Dweck The Five Love Languages The Power of Habit Atomic Habits The Tipping Point The Sacred Enneagram Anything by John Maxwell The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins (which I don't love, but the Hollises do)
I really vacillated between giving this 2 and 3 stars. But at the end of the day, reading this book is a lot like drinking Walmart's Dr. Thunder when what you really want is a Dr. Pepper. If you are 100% new to the Hollis empire, you may enjoy this book. I can't say that the advice or content is bad...it's just all repeat material. The stories, the advice...I've heard it all before, multiple times. It is a "man-friendly" repackaging of Girl Wash Your Face and Girl Stop Apologizing.
Excellent book. I absolutely love the honesty the authentic self the motivation the realism all the things. Very honored to have read the first half of the book via advanced copy of digital read thanks to being a Harper Collins ambassador. Dave Hollis did a fantastic job. I highly suggest!
Get Out of Your Own Way gives you the other side of the coin to Girl Wash Your Face & Girl Stop Apologizing. Dave had a very successful career but was unfulfilled and in a rut. He gives the reader a glimpse into what he did to work through all the lies and insecurities to become a better husband, dad & person. Dave uses his own experiences, both good & bad, to encourage the reader to make changes to improve their own lives. I would recommend this book for both men & women.
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review & have read the first half of the book.
A huge fan of Dave's, I have been waiting not so patiently since JULY (so over six months) for this release. It did not disappoint! Where many personal development books are straight fire and hype and motivation, GOOYOW is more explanation and encouragement. Some "I've been there" mixed with some "but here's where you could be with a few tweaks..." Dave told me, like he'd tell a friend over dinner, some suggestions backed by personal history. Good stuff! Preorder now, it releases in March 2020. I received an advance reader copy from Harper Collins Publishing.
I wasn’t sure if Dave’s book was going to be geared towards me because in thought Rachel’s book were more for women while Dave’s was geared towards men.
I was so wrong. I knew already Rachel was geared towards anyone but probably not books my husband would read. But then I started Dave’s and I thought, my husband would be into this but I totally related with a number of things Dave dealt with and overcame.
Two items that resonated with me was that Failing doesn’t make you a failure and everyone is thinking about what I am doing.
These two thoughts even have flowed together in my life at times. There have been so many times that I have failed and just totally ripped myself apart. On top of that, I was always worried about what people thought of me and how they felt, not truly how I felt.
So I just want to thank Dave for overcoming the fear of being vulnerable and releasing his first book. I would recommend this book to anyone!

OH MY GOODNESS! This book contained EVERYTHING I needed to hear. There's so many times I have been in my own way of happiness and success and the title LITERALLY spoke to me. I have known about this book for months prior to it being released, from all the social media posts on Rachel's instagram and have been anxiously waiting!! Just in the first half of the book I feel so ENLIGHTENED! And each consecutive chapter just kept getting better and better. This has been a very good read for the skeptic whose goals fall to the wayside because of every single freaking excuse in the WORLD!
***I received a free copy of this book from harpercollins as a part of the launch team. My opinions are my own.
Fantastic debut novel for Dave Hollis. It is written in the same format as Rachel's book, Girl Wash Your Face, in that he debunks the lies he believed about himself. He was extremely successful in his career, but unfulfilled. He shares his personal journey to getting out of his own way and living his best life! I really enjoyed hearing things from Dave's point of view. If you are a Hollis fan, grab a copy, you won't be disappointed.
Thank you Harper Collins and NetGalley for this ARC.
