While I've enjoyed card-a-day for years, the book doesn't do it for me. The overload of positive messages in this current pandemic is just way too much. I've read an advanced copy on Kindle which had no structure other than one continuous sum of notes from the universe. Let's hope the print version is more pleasing to the eye.
Thank you Netgalley and Beyond Words Publishing for the ARC.
I came very close to not finishing this book. Some of the pages have few words on them, but the book is over 500 pages long. I'd already read 3/4 of it, so I figured I might as well finish reading it so I could feel like I could write a review. I did read this in big chunks. Maybe I'd have liked it more if I only read one quote per day.
(Added to review: After reading other people's reviews I see those who love the book were already familiar with his notes. Some received them in emails. Apparently, it's better in small doses.)
My main objection to the book? Mike Dooley is not The Universe. He writes these notes as if he's quoting The Universe which should make them undeniably true, right? But clearly they're his thoughts and opinions. Most of the notes sound like self-help and New Age writers.
Many things he says are true and helpful. Some things are not true, and therefore not so helpful. Some people use "the Universe" instead of saying "God" when they really mean "God." Usually that doesn't bother me, but some of these quotes make it clear if he believes in God, he doesn't believe in the same God I do.
Many of his notes are somewhere along the lines of this from Page 456:
"What if it was true that you make your own reality, and that your thoughts became the things and events of your life?
True. Our thoughts matter. They really do have an impact on everything in life.
Then there are many encouraging and fluffy notes meant to make you feel better about yourself like this on Page 419:
"Of all the people in all the world, not a single one of them...is more precious, loved, and deserving than you."
Mixed in with those are notes like the one on Page 267:
"By the way, there's no such thing a the devil-- and your heart has always known this."
No devil? I'm guessing all truth and goodness is also relative to this author.
On page 452:
"Do you think the Universe ultimately rewards those who live in poverty? Do you think those who till and sweat from paycheck to paycheck are more likely to inherit the Kingdom than those who work in ivory towers? Does the Universe take special notice of sacrifices? Is it pleased when some put the needs of others before their own? Does the Universe favor those who strive to live spiritual lives? Actually, honey, the Universe doesn't give a flying yahoo. It loves you no matter what rules you make up."
If "Universe" is just all of us and outer space, it's probably true. If he's implying the "Universe" is "God" than this is false and poking at things like the Sermon On The Mount. Him saying "rules you make up" implies to him God's words are all made up by humans. Some would agree with him. I would not.
Then there's the little P.S. comments at the end of many notes that are like commentaries on his notes. For example on Page 134 he writes about human feelings that are "Reminding you that there are still a few more doors to try." Space. Space. Then, "Let's get this party started!" Those little comments at the end really bug me for some reason.
Reading this almost felt like a waste of time. I guess I must have heard about it on a Brooke Castillo podcast. I can see how people might like it. I just don't prefer it. Now I'm curious to read other reviews.
*Thank you so much to Beyond Words publishing for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Since I had previously read one of Mike Dooley's works I was excited to get to pick up another of his titles. This one compiles all three books from the Notes from the Universe trilogy, which contained all of the "notes" that Dooley sent out starting in 2000. Most of the messages are humorous, poignant and positive. They can range from a few lines to a full page in some instances. This is a perfect book to use as something that you pick up each day and read a random passage from it. It also reads really well if you decide you want to read a chunk at the time.
Thank you to Beyond Words Publishing and Net Galley for an e-ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. I have to say that I've subscribed to Mike Dooley's Notes from the Universe for a long time. I'm so pleased to see his words in book form, especially during a time we all need some reassurance. This book did not disappoint, and if you want uplifting, but real words and haven't read Notes from the Universe in the past, or if you're the authors long time fan, either way, you will love this book.
Mike Dooley's the complete Notes from the Universe is a compilation of the many Notes from the universe that would pop in my mail everyday.
This book is very good to be read in a paperback format or a random page a day so that we get an appropriate response from the Universe. This will be very good in a paper back format.
I recommend this book as a keepsake on the bedside table to go through a page a day at a time. If you like daily motivation quotes then this book is for you.
I thank Netgalley and the author for an eARC and the opinions expressed are solely mine!
DNF – not the insights I expected. I read this book based on a talk heard recommending it. I expected to learn spiritual knowledge I had not heard before, but I didn’t gain any learnings or insights perceptions in ‘The Complete Notes From The Universe’. It read like a moralistic sermon on living the best life. Others are finding it uplifting but I did not finish it. I am reading another book by Mike Dooley, which I might give 5* to however. just not this one. This book review also appears in https://thereadersvault.blogspot.com/...
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I hugged it when I got it in the mail. I first signed up for Mike Dooley's daily email Notes from the Universe in 2006. My husband was going through chemotherapy and the daily emails were like virtual hugs. All these years, I have kept all the daily Notes from the Universe in an email folder because I couldn't bear to part with any of them. Now that I have the complete collection, I can finally let them go.
I've been receiving Mike Dooley's Notes From the Universe for several years now and they are always spot on. This book is - as the title says - a complete collection of hundreds of those daily notes. You can read them one after the other and after binge-reading them, you'll definitely feel good. You can, of course, also just open the book to a random page every day (or as often as you'd like). I'd highly recommend this great book.
This is an easy review because if you know Dooley's work at all, you know what you'll get before reading a word. He has affected thousands, mainly w his daily emails, and this of course allows readers to get more of the same, and most will enjoy this content very much, even if they've never read any of the author's stuff. Highly recommended.
This is the "Notes from the Universe" trilogy in one volume. I absolutely loved this book. It was very down to earth and inspiring. I highly recommend it.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the Publisher for providing me with a copy free of charge. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of it.
As a long time subscriber of Notes From The Universe, I enjoy the compilations featuring these Notes. I have several editions, and continue buying the newer releases because great wisdom never gets old.
Get inspired from the first page and feel the energy of the Universe pulsating through you in each page. I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend reading it as soon as possible. It will change your life!
I don't really like this kind of Oprah babble, but I gave it to my husband and he absolutely loves it so I'm giving it 5 stars from him. Great for people who like that kind of thing.
