Davey’s Rule #86: A good Daddy will never lie to his boy… even by omission.
Travis Miller has a pretty solid life in the small California beach town he calls home. He’s working his way up in the district attorney’s office, he owns a home with an ocean view, and he has close ties with his family. Life is good. If only he could find a sweet boy to call his own, life would be… perfect.
Adam Nichols’ life has never been easy. Growing up in foster care taught him to be strong, so finding himself in a violent relationship was a shock. Now that he's finally free of it, he faces new problems. He's jobless, homeless, and terrified of starting from scratch.
With a little help from an old friend, Adam discovers a whole new world. He goes from rock bottom to renting a room from a hot assistant DA and working at Daddy’s Lap, a kink club that opens his vanilla eyes to things he’d never imagined. His new roommate is a balm to Adam’s damaged soul. The tender way Travis cares for him is almost like the Daddy kink community he’s seen at the club. But Travis isn’t a Daddy… right? If he were, surely he’d have said so.
What happens when a lie by omission threatens to bring their budding relationship tumbling down around them? Will Travis ever be able to earn Adam's trust again?
This is the first book in a new series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Grab your fan and tissues because this series comes with both a high heat advisory and all the squishy feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book. Possible trigger for references to domestic violence.
Susan Hawke is more widely known for her mpreg writings as Susi Hawke; this new name is a departure from that. Whether written by Susan or Susi, the books are filled with that all-important love, laughter, and family; the only difference is that this name has no male pregnancy.
I mean I love Travis and Adam. However undoubtedly, Davey is the winner in this lovely audio for me. 😁❤️ I love reading shifters, paranormal and fantasy novels from lovely Susi Hawke. But this is my first contemporary novel from her and boy, did I love it! 🥰
Adam just got out of a very unhealthy and abusive relationship. After being under the thumb of his abusive ex-boyfriend for a few years, Adam is definitely not looking for next boyfriend. He just wants to get his life back on track, get a good job and be graduated as soon as possible. With the help of his very caring (on the verge of smothering 🤣) and helpful friend, Davey, aka his duck mama, 😂 he got a room to stay at Travis Miller, an attorney who’s working at the district attorney office. And boy, did Travis test his resolve of not looking for relationships anymore. Travis Miller is a Daddy Dom who’s looking for one perfect boy to take care of. When he heard of a young man who’s been abused and used by his ex-boyfriend at his favorite club from Davey, he jumped at the chance of helping the young man. And oh my, did Adam bring out all the protective and Daddy tendencies in him. Adam is the perfect boy he’s been looking for all his life. But Adam is also his tenant and has been badly mistreated by his ex so needless to say, he definitely has trust issues. More importantly, Adam doesn’t know he is a Daddy. Why did he lie when Adam first moved in with him? He definitely needs to man up and confess Adam and does it soon if he wants this innocent, lovely young man to become his boy forever.
I like the slow, sensual and loving relationship between Adam and Travis. Adam likes Travis and really wanted to become something more between the two of them. But at the same time, he’s also scared. 🙂 Travis was so patient, loving and caring towards Adam. It was a beautiful to watch two of them. 😍 And plus, oh Davey .. bratty, sexy, mouthy Davey .. that boy makes everything better. 😂 Not only he was the Cupid between Adam and Travis, he was also the one who brought them together in the end. 😌 The epilogue was very lovely. It’s always nice to see charming proposals in the end. 💙 But I think my favorite part is the last chapter where Davey listed all his rules for a perfect Daddy. It was gold! 😂👏 Michael Pauley did a great job binging everyone into life. I’m excited for next book in the series and I can’t wait to listen Davey’s story too. 😁🥰
4.25 Daddy wants his boy to be his hubby too stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
This is a sweet Daddy/boy romance with a side order of horrible ex providing a bit of tension but the majority of the narrative just concerns Travis and Adam getting to know each other and falling in love.
I will say, the intro completely confused me, given that it's a first-person PoV from the Davey of the series' title and I honestly didn't see the point of it being there as it regarded this story really.
That said, Davey's a riot and I'm guessing he'll get his own story eventually and there are a few other potential pairings hinted at.
Although personally, I hated the glimpse we were given of Preston and I don't actually care about him and definitely not with Travis' brother if that's where the narrative's going 😲
If you like relatively low angst, sweet romance, then this will suit perfectly.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
Same as before. Remember why this was an addictive series haha
3.5-4 stars: August 2022
This was well done, I will say the prologue with Davey didn’t let Davey shine, but throughout the book he did, I’m excited for his book I know that’s a ways away hahaa.
But Travis and Adam were great, just the right amount of sweetness. Adam was new to the daddy/boy scene and this was done well.
I think Travis withholding information wasn’t the way to go after seeing/hearing what Adam went through but that issue didn’t feel dragged out which was good.
I am nervous going in to book two with Preston.. in this book he was a lot attitude wise so hopefully Bryan whips him in to shape haha (who knows if that literal) 😂😂
Overall a good start to the series! Now on to book two!
Now this was a disappointment. I’ve liked Susi Hawke’s books before, but man, this was boring!
What mostly stood out to me was how incredibly dull the conversations these guys had were. I can do some small talk where the characters get to know each other, but darn, this lasted almost the entire book. For instance they had like 10 conversations about how wonderful the beach is and how nice it is to sit by it/walk along side it/watch the waves. And so on…
Also I noticed that some parts were just overly detailed and could have been left out completely.
I did like Adam, and was glad he was doing okay after his abusive relationship. But Travis was so dull that I fell asleep every time he started talking.
I also didn’t buy the whole, oops, I forgot to tell you I’m a Daddy at the club you work at. I knew it would be the big break-up/fight scene around 75% and everyone could see this coming.
I did like Davey, and I’m slightly curious to see who he will end up with, as well as Travis’ brother. But if everyone talks to each other like Adam and Travis did this entire book, I might have to pass on the rest of the series.
Friendship, love, and finding understanding are the keys to making this a great story. Finding someone to love you and connect with you is an amazing blessing and these MC's are both ready for that special love. Coming from very different worlds and vastly different experiences both these men find common ground. The writing was good and the story-line really flowed.
Travis and Adam are really special together. I so enjoyed their enjoying grilled cheese and tomato soup and enjoying movies and camping. They really found some wonderful common pleasures to build their friendship and love on. Their chemistry is amazing and i loved that they learned to really communicate to keep their relationship growing and solid.
This is the first book in the new Davey's Rules series and i am so looking forward to several more. There are several men who i want to see more of including Davey, Travis's brother and a bratty omega, all these guys need some love and attention.
I loved this book! I was confused by the prologue at first because the MCS were different than the blurb, but it all makes sense later. This was mild on the Daddy kink, and just enough for me to appreciate. I just loved all the characters in this book (except Zach)! Davey just made me LOL too many times!! I CAN'T wait for his book, and I hope he ends up with Bryan!!😍 I'd even read about Preston who is a catty and rude Bitch! I just feel like he must have some major issues to be so rude, and he would be very interesting. I'm not going to summarize the book because the blurb does it justice. If you're into mild Daddy kink, and friends who are sassy and awesome... This is a book for you.
The prologue made me want to stop reading three paragraphs in BUT, I understand that this series is about Davey finding his "Daddy" but he got on my nerves.
After that I had to take step back and re-read the blurb to even give the book a second chance. I really, really tried GR but DOA at Chapter 4. I just couldn't move past Davey or the strange deja vu that I 'be read this before. Sooo I'm done.
I actually started this ages ago but couldn't get into it for some reason. I'm glad I tried again cause I loved this story. This Daddy was a caretaker, which was so sweet and wonderful.
Rules to Follow is the first book in Susan Hawke’s new Davey’s Rules series, and I found it a sweet, if somewhat quiet, Daddy/boy story. The book starts off with the aftermath of one of Zach’s abusive attacks on Adam and we can really feel for Adam as he tries to get away and move forward with his life. I appreciated how we see Adam reclaim control, finding a job that he loves and taking self-defense classes that give him the confidence and skills he needs to feel more secure. I think Hawke does a nice job giving Adam some independence and showing his inner strength, while at the same time showing us how a Daddy/boy relationship offers the nurturing and care that he enjoys.
The plot here mostly follows Adam and Travis getting to know one another and beginning their relationship. The guys are sweet together and there is a nice tenderness to their interactions. While Zach is kind of a low level background threat, most of the focus here is really on Adam and Travis’ developing relationship.
Oh how I wanted to love this. The premise seemed good - a character who leaves an abusive relationship meets a brat and they possibly get into kinky love? And in 1st POV? I enjoy 1st POV a lot.
It's my first time trying this author, so I didn't know what to expect.
The overall tone is what ruined the entire experience. I never respond well to the tongue-in-cheek type of writing. The main character rubbed me the wrong way from the second line. I could deal with his superficial listing of things (mostly- he's vapid but I'm guessing he grows as the story progress--hopefully) but the tone... *smh* :/
Rather than make myself suffer, I'll just stop now. I had to stop once that tone carried over into the abused character.
This might work for readers who enjoy alternating 1st POV, bratty 'boys' who know what they want and are stubborn enough to get it and slightly humorous tones. It seems light from what I've read.
First we meet the titular character Davey. He comes off a little overbearing at first because of his list of rules and the fact that he expects other people to be mind readers. But beyond that initial briefly shaky introduction, Davey is actually quite endearing and even admits that he needs to let his potential suitors know about the list of rules. He's definatly a brat, and a queen with a capital Q, but Davey is someone you want on your side, a loyal and caring friend.
We're also introduced to Daddy Travis on this date. He immediately breaks three of Davey's rules, and is banished to the island of misfit Daddies to await a more suitable match, as a main character in this volume.
Adam is a sweetheart fleeing an abusive relationship. He has some of the characteristics of a little, without actually being one, and often colors with some of the littles at the club where he works.
This particular book contains one of my favorite tropes -- a sweet and caring daddy who likes to feed his boy, and take care of him. Travis is definitely not a disciplinary Dom.
This is a really nice beginning to a series that I'm looking forward to reading more of. Susan Hawk has a very gentle and innocent way of introducing scenes and kink lifestyle that I don't necessarily see in other books, and it's something that really makes me like her unique perspective when I need something softer. It's not necessarily something that I'm always looking for, but when it comes to her novels it's one of the factors that continues to keep me hooked as a reader.
Why do authors insist on forcing their couples to get engaged or married at the end of a book when they’ve been together for a ridiculously short time, and spent half the book just getting to know each other as roommates? Just no. This book was fine but topical of the author. I like the kink or wouldn’t have read it. FYI Davey is horrible. His character is the worst kind of annoying, and his list of rules is a poor premise for a book series. I would never want to read his book as his dialogue is a stereotypical Gay Queen, unoriginal and uninspiring. If anyone talked like that all the time, no one would hang out with them. He has to be fixed before the next book.
El daddy kink no es lo mío, pero soy débil y está en KU. Mmmm, pues psé, no me ha gustado, hay partes que me parecen un tanto disparatadas, quizás es que no es lo mío, no lo sé, pero no me ha transmitido absolutamente nada.
I’m a sucker for a good daddy book, so I really enjoyed this journey. I was confused at the beginning about who Davey was, but then fell in love with him. I love watch T and A’s journey. Learning where they fit and that they are loved. The writing was great the smexy was great and I can’t wait to read everyone’s story. Especially davey.
I really enjoyed the Daddy/boy dynamics thought Travis should’ve been more up front. And I adore Adam and how strong he is despite what he’s gone through!
Davey is one of those characters you either love or hate. I think I'm a little bit down the middle. He was a bit... much at times. I loved Travis and Adam.
Travis lies by omission about something very important. I felt that went on a bit too long, but I did love how things were resolved later. While I did enjoy this, I'm not sure if I'll be reading the second book just yet. One of the main characters, Preston, went beyond spoiled and bratty to downright obnoxious. I've read enough books with characters like him recently - who the authors tried to redeem later. I really liked Bryan, but I can't see me getting into a book with Preston as a main character. I will, however, probably read #4 because I'm eager to see more about Landon and Mikey. I adored those two in this one. I'd like to see more of them. I'll be skipping #3 completely as my blog partner wasn't a fan. She and I are usually pretty much in sync on our reading so I'll be giving that one a hard pass.
Overall, an entertaining read. I laughed a lot but got annoyed more often than not by Davey and his gurl! in practically every sentence.
Oh I love Davey all right. He's the actual main character of this series. He has rules, like many rules about how a Daddy should be. Adam as said the blurb had just gotten out from an abusive relationship. The last thing he needed was someone who's controlling and dominant. Travis's a Daddy, one failed date with Davey, who jas too many rules, he didn't expect meeting Adam, Davey's best friend and roommates. Speaking about awkward. I liked Davey and Adam's platonic relationship , I think more than I liked Adam and Travis. Lol. The communication was not there when it comes to tell your boy that you're a Daddy. That's make rule number 89 added to Davey's rules (insert eyerolling emo). Though this one not really my liking, I'm still curious about Davey, and who can tame his bratty freckles ass! :)
For some reason this author and me don’t click. Her books are often a miss for me. Again with this one. I’m sad to say this was very boring... I love Daddy kink and with the blurb (and the ratings) I thought this was gonna be a great read... Unfortunately there was zero chemistry between Adam and Travis. Adam deserved someone sweet and caring after an abusive ex but omg Travis was sleep inducing boring. There were so many (boring) conversations. The drama with Travis keeping a secret he was a Daddy was ridiculous. Adam works in a Daddy bar FFS and even tells Travis he thinks he is a Daddy. I also don’t get why Adam was upset Travis didn’t tell him sooner. That’s Travis’ decision to share, isn’t it? Davey was cute and funny and sweet in the beginning but the way he talks and behaves started to irritate me.

This book was super cute. We started out with in infamous Davey but he's not who the book is about. He has a ridiculous list of Daddy rules and they played out throughout the book. Travis is the Daddy and Adam is Davey's friend who finally got out of an extremely abusive relationship and started over with Davey's help. Travis and Adam are a match made in Daddy heaven. They were so sweet and seemed to meet each other's need. A bit of kink, nothing over the top. Will definitely read the next books in the series.
I didn’t really drop this one because I haven’t really read it (I wasn’t interested in the book). I just went for a word-search for Bryan and Preston, the mcs of book #2 to get myself up to speed.
************ Davey’s Rules Series
Book 1 - Rules to Follow - skimmed through Book 2 - Rules to break - 3.5 stars Book 3 - Rules for Santa Book 3.5 - Rules for Growing Book 4 - Rules to Obey Book 4.5 - Making Rules Book 5 - Rules to Ignore shorts collection - Rules for Loving
Sweet hurt/comfort daddy-kink story with little angst. Luckily, there was a little bit of drama at one point, but I personally like my stories with more angst than what I got here, then it could have gotten a higher rating from me.
Adam and Travis were fun characters and I loved following their story. I liked the daddy/boy aspects of the story and I also liked how the book was more than just about it. The book didn't center around the daddy/boy aspect of their relationship and that was my favourite thing about it.
