Ready to take a chance on love again?

Rachel Milligan fell head over heels…once. Then her happy world crashed in around her, leaving her reeling and wondering if she’d survive.
That was three years ago. The pretty nurse has pulled herself up from the ashes and built a solid life for herself. As a nurse. As a volunteer. As a temporary foster mom.

When ex-baseball sensation Derek Rossi shows up in Jackson Hole for much needed R&R, love is the last thing on the sexy superstar’s agenda. With three broken engagements under his belt, he’s pretty much given up on the whole happily-ever-after thing.

Neither he nor Rachel is ready for romance. But they’re not the only ones with skin in the game. When love blooms, thanks to Joy and the power of a perfectly aimed baseball, Derek and Rachel are forced to face their fears. Will they slide into home plate together? Or walk away?

~This story was originally published as The Christmas Proposition (as noted on the copyright page) It was updated (WOW-has technology changed in ten years!) as well as some of the writing was tightened and a name was changed. What hasn't changed is this is a heartwarming story that you're going to absolutely love!~

As someone who is twice widowed, I'm afraid I can't look at this book with the eyes of reading a frivolous romance novel, the way I have to read most romance novels. What has been done in this book is harmful to grieving widows and widowers and it needs to be pointed out, or else the myth of "getting over it" will be perpetuated, and people like me will be eternally affronted by ignorant people who feel that the best thing for a grieving widow(er) is to just move onto another romance. There are so many things wrong with this novel, but here is the short list of highly annoying perpetuated myths of society that were the biggest sore thumbs to me.

1) There is a lot of language in the book that is negative towards the grieving widow (Rachel). Even though it is one character's perspective, this book is written in third person, and it could have been done in a more graceful way that pointed out the fallacies of Derek's thoughts. Phrases like "still stuck on" her first husband being one of those types of phrases. I'm two years out from the loss of my second husband and nearly twenty years out from the loss of my first, and I miss them both like crazy every day. EVEN WHEN I WAS MARRIED TO THE SECOND HUSBAND, I MISSED THE FIRST. Is this bad? No! If you take away the romance equation think of other people in your life you have lost and miss... like, I miss both sets of grandparents every day too. But no one tells me that I'm "still stuck on my grandparents." Cuz that's ridiculous! The people you have loved and lost will ALWAYS BE IN YOUR HEART and the CANNOT BE REMOVED by the replacement of another person.

2) In regards to the above, there was a section towards the end of the book where the child character, Joy, tells Derek that Rachel is "not over her first husband" and that she needs to "forget him." AND DEREK DOESN'T CORRECT HER!!! This would have been a great teachable moment. Understanding that a child doesn't understand the complexities yet of love and loss, a corrective opportunity was COMPLETELY MISSED in this section. But no. Why? Because Derek is a prick who cant get over himself enough to realize that his love interest has a past and has loved someone before him. So he kind of just lets the moment pass, which means to me that he has the mentality of a child. BOO HISS.

3) There are several times in the book in which it seems suggested that Rachel's love for Derek is somehow better than the love for her first husband. Or that the sex is better. Or hotter. WHY???? Why does the new love interest HAVE TO ECLIPSE the old one in order for it to happen!? That is NOT HOW IT WORKS. I have never once compared my first husband to my second husband when falling in love with my second. Why? CUZ THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PEOPLE. My love for them was equal in all ways.... was it different? Yes. But I would never believe or even think to myself for one moment that I loved one man more than the other. I even refer to BOTH OF THEM as my soul mates. You can have more than one, you know. There's not a limit on soul mates. Obviously this author has never been widowed.

4) Oh don't get me started on that scene with Rachel towards the end where Derek professes his love for her and then demands that she choose going to LA with him and over attending a ceremony to honor her first husband. And then she agrees to do it, like some kind of desperate fool. I would have pushed such a man out the door because he obviously did not understand me! (Had my second husband done such a thing, we'd never be married.) I don't need love so badly that I'm willing to forsake my past.

5) Lots of "live in the present, not in the past" references that are off the wall wrong. Still having a person in your heart does not mean that you're living in the past. Still having pictures up of your lost loved one DOES NOT mean you're stuck in the past. Again, think of your dead parent or grandmother. NO ONE WOULD TELL YOU TO PUT THOSE PICTURES AWAY! If it doesnt work in both situations, the whole premise doesn't work. Sorry.

6) I hate jealous men. It's plain asinine to be jealous of a dead man. If you're jealous of a dead man, you are a Neanderthal. There's a mention in the book of Derek not wanting to even hear Rachel's first husband's name -- that it made him upset. Fuck that shit. My second husband liked hearing stories of my first husband. Because he wasnt a Neanderthal; he had empathy and understanding.

7) Oh brother. The wedding rings situation. I dont know. That's a personal choice, but all I can say is not wearing your wedding rings is not a sign that you are ready to receive love again. I took mine off about a year ago, but simply because I didnt want to have to explain myself all the time. People see them, assume I'm married, ask uncomfortable questions I'd rather not always have to go into. I'm not really looking for any relationship right now, so I'm not available either... I just took them off for convenience. I do wear them on occasion -- usually at Christmas -- as a memory tribute. And when I do that, I actually put on both sets of wedding bands. Am I stuck in the past? According to this book I am....

I read a lot of Cindy Kirk novels and yeah a lot of her stuff is happy, sappy romance.... white people living white lives in small communities all going to the same church. I accept that. That's her existence and you can only write from experience. I just wish she'd consulted an actual widow when she wrote this to get the real sort of feelings that occur when someone has lost a spouse and when they start to love again. Or I wish some editor would have helped her out because people read these books and they get ideas about life that are goofy, and then they impart these ideas on actual people who are grieving, and it is very hurtful. It's taken me years and lots of Facebook posts to beat these ideas out of people's heads and a book like this just completely undoes everything.

I'm still trying to find a book that handles widowhood the RIGHT WAY. I guess I will have to write my own.

This romance pushed all the right buttons. A sweet nurse who lost her husband is caring for a foster child for the holidays. They meet a professional baseball player who is visiting for awhile, and a friendship grows into romance. The supporting characters are good, and the little foster girl and her friends are so cute as they try to be matchmakers. It was a short book, and an easy, happy read. The characters were well-developed, and so was the story! Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Cindy Kirk has written another truly inspirational love story about overcoming grief, loss and betrayal to find love and family. Rachel still mourns her husband who was murdered three years ago and is now a temporary foster mom to Joy. Joy was orphaned young and abandoned by the distant family members who took her in. Derek is the tabloids favorite target because he is a famous baseball player with three broken engagements. The three come together when Joy accidentally hits Derek in the head with a baseball. Neither Derek or Rachel are looking for a relationship other than friendship but Joy has different goals in mind, a permanent family. The story and machinations that follow are entertaining and enjoyable. A great story with dynamic characters.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.

What could have been a decent internal conflict driven romance wrecked by a child who never acted her age and was suspiciously well adjusted despite her stories of abuse of the hands of her previous caretakers.

Each book Cindy has written has an impact on my heart. This one truly hit my heart. Children always know what they want in parents and know a child is placed in foster care all due to the fact that they either do not have any blood relatives or the ones they do are worthless. I could never understand how someone would deny love to a child whose parent were killed in an accident. Rachel and Derek are just volunteering but without realizing they are helping each out more with Joy’s help. The story is about Rachel, Derek and Joy. The story starts off funny with Joy accidentally throwing a baseball towards Derek’s head. Rachel is in the medical profession and immediately attends to him. Derek is a baseball player who is in their town to get away from everyone especially as he just called it off with his last fiancée. Rachel has been a widower since the love of her life passed away but is also the foster mom to Joy, who lost her parent and was taken away from her only blood relatives. Joy doesn’t want to lose Rachel and has taken a liking to Derek as Rachel has too, so she comes up with a plan that must work in two weeks as this is when she will be shipped off to another family. The story is funny and will have you laughing out and crying at the same time. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Rachel is a widowed nurse. She has been alone for 3 years and this year as it nears Christmas she is acting as a temporary foster parent for a little girl named Joy. Joy has been passed from home to home. She has dealt with difficult situations, and she has come through all of it and remained a charming and intelligent little girl.

Rachel is the health professional at a baseball camp led by Derek, a retired professional pitcher.

As things wind down, Joy attempts to toss Derek a ball. She hits him in the temple and nearly knocks him out.

Derek has a reputation which has been splashed all over the tabloids. The fact that not everything that appears in the tabloids is true has nothing to do with truth in journalism.

Rachel has kept her wedding ring on in order to keep her late husband’s memory alive. She has kept herself separate from any idea of having a man in her life.

Derek is charming, handsome, funny and very good to Joy. He seems to dissolve the wall Rachel has built around herself.

This is a quick and sweet read. The story has characters who are wonderfully human. That is what Ms Kirk does. She creates characters who would make wonderful friends.

I liked the story and it is a good novella to read at Christmas. There is an overwhelming feeling of warmth and happiness and love.

This is tough to review. Parts of the story were good and it was a page turner, but the blatant disrespect towards Rachel‘a late husband Tom and his marriage to Rachel, the jump in the sack and fall in love with somebody within about a week of meeting them, and then going between sex and church chapters was frustrating and awkward.

This was a sweet read. Mickie was one determined little girl. To get her foster mum together with Derek. Sending texts to get them together. Engineering meetings between Rachel and Derek.
It wasn't easy with Rachel still mourning the loss of her husband.

An emotional holiday read. For example, the emergency fostering situation. I am not judging. I know it is necessary, but it broke my heart. The thought of a child feeling lost and unwanted to begin with possibly making a connection only to have to leave again. I know there are different circumstances under which emergency fostering has to occur, but this made me sad.

I felt for Rachel with her friends telling her she needed to move on. I have never lost a spouse. But, losing anyone you love and having people tell you it's time to move on, just doesn't sit right.

Derek seemed nice enough, I couldn't understand why he would get messages from someone he wasn't sure about and not confirm them. I don't mean to ask if the message came from Rachel, just confirm if what she said was what she really wanted. There would be nothing strange in that since they both went back and for so much.

Then we have Derek wanting to foster or adopt Joy. I thought that was great. I know Rachel was a temporary situation for Joy, but as someone he was falling for, shouldn't he have mentioned it to Rachel?

Just thoughts I had as I was reading. I am glad they got their HEA. There was romance, a sense of family and friendship, within a small town.

A joyful and uplifting book about the season and the love and kindness of friends and family. Derek has hanged up his cap as a baseball player and is now a sports analyst for the game. Though he is no longer playing it seems he cannot stay out of the tabloids. After breaking off his third engagement he decides to stay away from relationships for at least six months. He never took into consideration running into Rachel and falling hard for her. There is just one major issue why Rachel cannot seem to commit to him and that is she still mourning the husband she lost three years ago and she still wears her ring. So begin this beautiful story of overcome pain disappoint to truly find love. And of course I cannot forget to add the sweet young girl Joy (whom the book is named after) a foster child staying with Rachel who hopes that Rachel adopts her.

Who is telling the story?

After reading a different series of Cindy kirks I thought I would try this one. I did not like the flipping to mr rossi Rachel and joy on the same page I could not work out if it was in the 1st 2nd or 3rd person but sometime it was written like it was there thoughts so it got confusing when it went from one to other on the same page.
Lexi and Nick it was hinted that Nick did not know his name when he met lexi? But was left at that it was a pointless comment from who I don't know Rachel s thoughts I think.but friends David or Travis made a comment. Now clearly that's book two so we are now going back in time and seeing Rachel single again.

Derek Rossi is laying low. He needs to stay out of the spotlight. The tabloids have it all wrong so he is running a baseball camp in Wyoming. Little did he know that he would find in this small community everything he was searching for. Rachel Milligan is an ER nurse and is hosting an emergency foster placement. Joy just wraps her fingers around your heart. If they don't find a home for her, she will be placed in a group home. All she wants for Christmas is to be adopted by Rachel and Derek. Joy and her friend Addie are so precious. Their plan, get them to marry each other. With the power of prayer and mistletoe, Joy gets everything she wanted for Christmas.

It was a good story.

An ER Nurse temporarily takes in a foster child named Joy for a month. They meet a famous baseball player when Joy throws a ball to him and hits him hard in the head. Nurse tends to ballplayers head injury. Folks spend time together and sparks fly but there are problems and nurse doesn't want any part of it. But Joy wants a mom and dad to really adopt her and her heart is set on the three of them becoming a family.

This was a sweet story with lots of heartfelt moments and of course there was a happily ever after type ending. I enjoyed it.

It is a good book and it would have been a 4 star worth book if it didn't have the child meddling business into it. I know this looks cute for a book and I know this is only a story but the things joy and addie speaks and does, is so far out of their age, not that I remember author mentioning their age but if joy is in foster home she should be a child, children has to be children even if they are dealt bad hands in life just like joy. This one thing made me finish this book rather than reading it and not going for the next one. Sorry author because the story was too good but not for me.

It Started with Joy

This was a special story about Rachel, Joy, and Derrick. Rachel was fostering Joy for a month. They were at baseball clinic and Rachel found a ball, pitched towards Derrick and hit him in the head. Rachel, being an emergency room nurse, was quickly examining him. Others rushed to help, one was Travis, a doctor at the hospital. This was the beginning of a wonderful story and romance. Enjoy their journey.

A tender and fun story

This is a cute story about learning to love again. Rachel lost her first husband to a tragic accident and wasn't ready to move on till Derek and Joy showed her that she could. Not only is this story about them but it's also about Joy finding a family.

This is a short and sweet story. An easy read based at Christmas time.

This was a sweet and funny story about love. Love between two people, and love for a little girl in need of a family. I loved how the little girl played cupid to bring both of her potential parents together. It has all of the qualities one expects from a Cindy Kirk book.

Soft porn

Sorry I did not realize this was a soft porn book. Very graphic and also confusing as the lead adults were supposedly church going Christians but had no problem with the concept of "friends with benefits"

It Started With Joy

This was a good story with one exception, that there was premarital sex. Joy at eight left the impression that she already had seen enough of an upside down world. For the sake of the child a better role model would have been abstinence.

Love is sweeter the second time around!

Love can sweep you off your feet. Which is exactly what happened with Derek and the emergency room nurse who took care of him when he was hit on the head. He didn't see the ball coming but it changed his life in a miraculous way. 💖
