I'm preparing to take the 'Topik' (Korean language efficiency test) and this book was a good help, as for me personally the biggest problem is not grammar, but lack of vocabulary. This book gives you a good opportunity to read stories beforehand and try to guess the meaning of the words before you can check their meanings on the following pages. I think my vocabulary definitely increased and so did my ability to understand texts in Korean despite not knowing every word. My Korean level is intermediate, but the book was still challenging a couple of times because of my lack of vocabulary. I think it is a good choice for beginners and intermediate learners, especially if you need to learn new words and know the basics of Korean grammar.

I bought this book four or five months after starting studying the language but could not understand enough of the content to enjoy the experience. I picked it up again after one year of study and while it was still very challenging, this time I managed to finish it, one story at a time. I will very likely reread it in a few months to measure my progress. Good stories, great way to learn vocabulary and get used to a large range of grammar patterns!

I really enjoyed reading this and found it was a good level for me. However I think it is definitely not for beginners, and is more at the upper intermediate or low advanced level. There are many complex words and even a few idioms used.

As a lower advanced learner, I found it really satisfying to be able to finish this really quickly but still understand the content. There are questions at the end of each chapter to test understanding which were helpful.

The version i read was the actual book not the kindle edition but i couldn't find it in here.
Well done and explained the stories and the vocabulary used well.
I think is more intermediate and for some chapter difficult. In my opinion is not for a beginner.

I learned a lot reading this.

Not what I’m interested in...

Sports, dating, everyday life.
It might be great for someone who wants practical vocabulary and stories. It just wasn’t for me. So I took off one star.

Great Book to Aid Your Korean Language Learning

I have read the French version of this book, and I love the concept of this series! I did think it was funny, though, when I read the English translation of the first two short stories in this book and found them to be very similar in setup to the French version! For instance, the first short story in both books is about healthy eating, looking at one person and their dietary habits. The layout of the story is essentially the same in both books. The names of the individuals as well as what they choose to eat are changed to make them culturally appropriate. Very fun.

The very brief introductory section before the stories tells you a little about the authors’ thoughts about the language learning process as well as their suggestions about how to use the short stories to further your language learning. I quite enjoyed the brief discussion of extensive vs. intensive learning. I love the idea of extensive learning, that we simply throw ourselves into the language, just reading, listening, and watching without worrying too much about comprehension. Each story section is made up of four parts: the story itself, a vocabulary list, a short quiz, and an English translation.

This book is not for the rank beginner. You would need to have knowledge of the Korean symbols and some background in grammar to get the most from this.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

As a beginning learner, this book was a bit difficult for me but I was able to glean new words and add to what little I know which makes this book a five star for me. I love Korean and need a lot of help so as a help, this book is awesome.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
