The ACT Workbook for Teens with OCD: Unhook Yourself and Live Life to the Full

Rate this book
This workbook, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), teaches teens with OCD new skills to handle the stream of pesky obsessions that show up in their mind.

It presents the Choice Point - a tool to help teens choose how to handle those tricky moments when dealing with unwanted thoughts. Chapter by chapter, teens learn powerful skills to unhook from their obsessions, including exposure exercises and strategies for accepting their emotions, and complete activities to help them overcome their compulsions, avoidant behaviors, and requests for accommodations.

With real-life examples and tons of fun activities, this workbook shows that fears, worry and nervousness are a part of life and gives teens the skills to choose how to respond to their obsessions and move towards the stuff they really care about. Making applying ACT and ERP skills fun, it encourages them to face their fears and live life to the full.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.

This is a great resource for teens with OCD, but really anyone with OCD or anyone who interacts with people with OCD (family, friends, professionals). So often, we are focused on and taught ERP, ERP, ERP, but this book takes a slightly different approach by combining exposures with ACT. I think it adds a great deal of value to the treatment of OCD. The choice point graphic was a useful, consistent tool through the book. Sometimes the written language was silly, but perhaps it will sit well with a younger reader.
Thanks for this resource, Dr. Z!

Great book for clinicians to learn more about integrating ACT with ERP for OCD. I found it useful for teens and also adults who struggle with this disorder. A must read to build skills and talk in a more confident way about OCD and ACT principles.

This has been helpful for my clients, both teens and young adults. Great exercises, psycho education, and reflective questions. Some of the exercises can be redundant, and that’s why I gave 4 stars instead of 5.
