Are you learning English as a second language or English as a foreign language? If so, that's great! We would like to help you on your journey to learn English to fluency.
With our book English Short Stories for Beginners and Intermediate Learners, you can practice reading English while working on your English vocabulary and grammar skills as an ESL learner.
The stories contained within this book were written with both beginner and intermediate English learners in mind, so you will find plenty of new vocabulary and English grammar to learn without having to worry about the level of the reading being too difficult.
Our English short stories only use the real English language used by native speakers every day so that you can learn English the natural way. They were written and edited by native speakers from the United States.
In diesem Buch geht es um John und sein Leben. Unterteilt in 10 Kapiteln.
Not Quite as Good as the Other “Short Stories” Book, But Still a Valuable Tool
I have read most of the non-English foreign language books by Language Guru that have “short stories for beginners and intermediate learners” in their titles. I was curious to see how they would approach that book concept in a volume meant for all ESL learners, not learners who have one specific native language, as the other books have (English). Some processes as well as what is actually contained in the books would alter materially with this particular book not being so targeted on a very specific language learner. For instance, in all the other books, the vocabulary lists have the words or phrases in the foreign language and English. Without a specific foreign language speaker as the target audience, how would this vocabulary list look? Also, in the directions about how to use the book, the authors stressed that this should be used for extensive, not intensive, learning, meaning that the learner should not stress over looking up all the words not know but should instead try to pick it up by context or simply let it go.
The vocabulary lists for each of the short stories are in English only, as you might imagine. The authors do suggest that you try to learn from context or only look up the words in that list that you don't know. While this may be seen as an agreeable alternative, I think it puts a little more distance between the learner and the knowledge to be gained, especially if this is meant to be extensive learning. And the authors are certainly proponents of extensive learning, as shown in the introductory sections. The book seems to have a few more short stories than the non-English-based books. But within each story, the format is relatively similar: a story in English, followed by a vocabulary list in English, and ending with a brief quiz in English about the story. (The non-English-based foreign language books of this title have a further section where the story is translated into English.) Despite these limitations, because it is meant for all ESL students no matter what native language they speak, I still think this book is of value to people who are learning English as a second language, especially if they are on the borderline of beginner and intermediate and have a reasonable grasp of English vocabulary and grammar. Reading simple stories like this is a good way to pick up more about the foreign language that you are studying.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Reading is an important way of learning a new language. To have a sufficient vocabulary is a cornerstone of a language and that is the aim of this book.
Ten short stories with each a word list and comprehension questions about the text - that is the way this book is built up. A great thing is that the stories follow the same person on his journey in life.
It says beginners to intermediate students. I would say that it's definitely intermediate if I look at my students. I would most certainly give these short stories as practice to my students in order for them to become better.
The stories are about some of the most common themes when learning a language. I like the questions at the end of each of them; they are very important to evaluate the level of reading comprehension of the readers. I like the vocabulary at the end but there should be a small definition of each word.
This book provides good practice for reading and observational skills as well as recalling information. This book is ideal to get you started and to give you the motivation to carry on with another book of your choice.
I really like the way this is set up with short stories followed by vocabulary and then comprehension questions. This will be great a resource book for me to use in tutoring my ESL students.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

This is a great book to help my ELL students pick up English through stories. When I have older kids who cannot tolerate the baby books, this book came to my rescue. They love it.
