Over the last ten years, Australian artist Matthew Revert has gained a cult fanbase in various artistic fields including graphic design, writing, & music. TRY NOT TO THINK BAD THOUGHTS collects over 150 pieces of absurdist collage, watercolor, and ink, imbued with humor, horror, sex, heart, and surreal love.
I really like the way this book comes together. The art selected, the juxtaposition of image elements in the art, the repetition of pink/blue/yellow, the interview and couple of anecdotes/stories interspersed with the art rather than a discussion of each work, all that. The whole thing just adds up to something different than the other art books I've picked up, something different to think about and interact with. Definitely interesting.
Collages, CYM splash, and body horror, accompanied by entertaining vignettes and an interview with the artist. the stories maybe are intended to set the background for the visceral imagery, but really they are intensely normal in a way that contrasts the art instead of contextualizing it. which is probably even better! i'm reminded of terry gilliam's collages in the old flying circus days, but literally more visceral.
