Three Simple Things: Leading During Chaos

Rate this book
"We humans make our lives painfully complex."

Relationships, which are fundamentally simple, now swim with complexity. The boring simplicity of being physically hard and in shape drowns in a swamp of exciting complex and lazy actions. The pursuit of wealth evolved away from simple work and simple teamwork to a virtual devaluing of hard work into hacks and overindulging actions that have no value. The simple act of learning is now mired in politics and debt. Spiritually, we also are void of meaning to the point where simple prayer or meditation signifies depression and loss of soul.

There are five areas in each of your lives that demand simplicity and abhor complexity: Spiritual, Relationship, Wealth, Physical, and Intellectual. To win, you need only do Three Simple Things in each. Success is that simple.

“Success is simple, not easy.”

Thom Shea is a Retired Navy SEAL officer. In this book he intends to explain how to achieve success by following a Six-Hour baseline, doing three simple things, in day to day life. He explains these with the help of stories of his own and of his clients following his six-hour baseline program.

Key Takeaways:
 Prerequisite for following Six-Hour baseline formulae is commitment. This is because
Without commitment nothing measurable is possible.
 The ability to say something, then to go and do what you said you would do, will set you apart from the herd.
 In order to honor your word, you must kill off all the excuses you’ve learned. Yes, excuses are all learned.
 If you don’t do things in life correctly the first time, it always take twice as long and twice as hard to do it right the second time.
 To honor your word and never give up:
• You must honor word for 21 days straight, without interruption.
• You must act in the face of fear by doing what you are afraid of doing. You must cast off what you thing about fear and face it.
• Walk for 24 hours, with rests of 10 minute in between and eating and drinking as much as one can.
 Six-hours around three simple things needs to be devoted to five pyramids:
• Spiritual
• Relationship
• Intellectual
• Wealth Building
• Physical
 Each of the pyramids will have distinct actions and words to reflect three simple things.
 Pay yourself for doing three simple things. This will help in getting rid of the excuses that come in the way of everything we do in daily life.

Overall
This is a book that gives you not just inspirational stories of success, but also a blueprint one can follow to achieve success in his life.

Thom Shea has written a relatable book for anyone that is leadership or is following a leader. Three simple things shows the breakdown of complex decision points within the 5 areas of life we all experience in some way. Many mentors have shown me the rule of threes in various ways. Whether it was three point speeches in colleges or three point sermons at church. Three simple things keeps us on track. Easy to understand but still difficult to apply if you are not willing to grow. This book breaks down the application that we all can achieve. Great book.

Shea's powerful memories and examples of client mentoring move together to provide a formula for success underwritten by his initial premise. The things which engender satisfaction are simple, but not easy. Success must be earned, and we do that by eliminating our excuses. There's much more to his methodology, of course; find out for yourself. 'Three Simple Things' is a must-read for anyone committed to self improvement.

I've been following Thom's work since 2017 and I have been long waiting for this book to come out. It's a five star read! The concept is simple and easy to adapt for each person. Thom presents very practical yet strategic thinking to maximize what you want out of your life, relationship, business, work, health...everything. His concepts are applicable universally and it all starts with you. Amazing read Thom, congratulations on another phenomenal book!

Three Simple Things is even better than Thom's first book, Unbreakable: A Navy SEAL's Way of Life. Within the first 2-3 chapters I learned how to completely shift my mindset; and it's showing up in several areas of my life. Thom Shea's stories are awesome, but how he makes them relatable for everyday people is the really good stuff. Definitely recommend.

Thom Shea's other book, Unbreakable, A Navy Seal's Way of Life was a game changer for me as an athlete. He builds on the lessons in his first book and digs into some detail on how to conduct one's life in order to have sustainable success in all areas. Highly recommend and should be on the nightstand of everyone that wants to step it up in this game called life!

This was interesting, Shea brings and talks about 5 pyramids (spiritual, relationship, physical, wealth and intellectual). Each pyramid has three non-negotiable items to be done on a daily basis. You accomplish you add money to the bank. Fail to complete you remove money. All of this starts with a 21 day evolution that if you fail to complete you start over until you achieve the full 21 days of success. The other item of interest is a 24 hour walking evolution. You're fighting the inner force of excuses to quit that your body and mind will play on you. This is from the SEAL training. Shea, brings in and talks about some of his clients he's worked with and how the program grows and individual in ALL phases of their lives.

Short, expensive, and just didn't feel worth the time and money to read. In terms of self-help and leadership, there are many better options out there. Really like the author though, and can see how his simple things could help certain people.
