The Mirror In My Dorm Room by Lashonda Beauregard is an epic tale about time travel.

To begin with, I paralleled Justina almost perfectly when reading this book! I am a marketing student, heading into sophomore year and I am definitely ready to start a new semester! That being said, some of the comments about college are definitely true - you need your ID (it's essential), some semesters are harder than others, the information about work studies, and sometimes the older dorms are the prettiest (in style).

This book felt like it was written by a college student, which was a nice touch. I'm not sure if it was intended to read like that, but it worked.

The time travel part of this story was a fun twist to the usually typical college story. It had a similar vibe to Alice Through the Looking Glass mixed with a confused identity. Justina, a college student in current day, is now Laurice in the 1930s when she steps through the mirror in her dorm room.

I felt like this story had a lot of potential and is heading towards the right direction. At times, the story came to a full stop at a break in the chapter, which threw the flow off for me. Some of the small drama scenes could have been extended with a little more action or conversation to assist in the ease of the story's flow. I also wondered how Justina knew managers and famous singers of the 1930s when she had just traveled back through time. She didn't seem to have the memories of Laurice and was very confused, only to know things pages later that she hadn't been aware of moments earlier. It was a little strange.

There's also times where certain comments are explained more than once in the same page - Rayla is a Nursing major and is taking biology. They see her a lot in biology because she's a Nursing major, and Nursing majors have biology. This happened with quite a few characters, not just solely Rayla. My biggest pet peeve was a sentence about Roger where chemistry was mentioned three times without the full stop. At times, it felt like the comments were purposely used for comedy, but they happened so often it just seemed to be Lashonda's writing style.

With a little more description (like how Justina's cute, little pink dress looked) I think this book would really blossom into a truly magnificent piece of writing. Even a little more background on what happened to Justina as Laurice near the end instead of a sudden stop! The ending was getting so good and I was so excited to read what happened, and it was just a quick summary!

For my cons, there were some sentences I would have fixed up. For example, lots of repetition and comments ending in "said", starting multiple sentences in a row with the same word, some grammatical errors in word choice and very short 3 word sentences. The only reason I notice these things is because I had two back to back English classes these past semesters in college. Most people probably wouldn't catch on, but it's noticeable on my end.

Overall, Lashonda Beauregard has a specific writing style that wasn't meant for me. The book is really cute, lots of fun and a nice take on time travel! I definitely recommend this novel to those who like science fiction and time travel stories!

Two out of five stars.

Justina was a normal college girl. Even her dorm room was normal, except for that mirror… That mirror will take Justina into another time, another life and she will be powerless to stop it, unless she discovers the secret the mirror is trying to tell her.

THE MIRROR IN MY DORM ROOM by Lashonda Beauregard is another take on the magic that can be found in the reflection one sees when Fate steps in. Ms. Beauregard’s tale sends readers on a journey into another time where one woman’s life may depend on the help of a girl from the future.

A quick read with a great plot idea that may need just a little polish to show its true brilliance.

A good beginning for a series. Some of the dialogue set in ancient Egypt seems modern. The book cover could be more interesting.

‘I started to walk towards the mirror, as I did my reflection appeared to fade away.’

Louisiana author Lashonda Beauregard is a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a Bachelors of Science in Apparel Merchandising/Business. Her passion is for writing poetry, stories and music! Her published books to date are The Harlem Renaissance Time Traveler's Diary, The Mirror In My Dorm Room (A Time Travel Story), and The Tannell's Family Secret.

Though Lashonda’s book is short (27 pages) it provides a dynamic story that is not only imaginative but also seductive: time travel is something many of us dream but rarely place into the context of our lies the way Lashonda manages.

The flavor of her writing is evident as her main character enters the space where the wonder of the story begins: ‘I was actually looking forward to having my own dorm room. I would have my own space, when I’m actually here. I needed to concentrate on my work this semester anyway. I’m getting more into my major classes and I have a heavy course load this semester with the business and English classes, my schedule will be hectic. I have Marketing, Management, Accounting, English Literature, Art History, and Communications. I’m also working on campus at the library. I walked into the dorm building and stood in line for about five minutes. Everyone was waiting to sign in and find out which room they were going to be in and get their key. Bayousville Dorm was one of the largest girls’ dorms on campus, since it has three floors. It was also one of the oldest dorms on campus. It had an old French style to it, well Southern Louisiana has a lot of Creole, French, and Cajun influence…."Well this is the last box," Roger said, as he glanced at the old mirror in my dorm room. "Didn’t know the university was supplying the dorm rooms with antiques," Roger said, as he jokingly laughed. "Ha-ha. It’s definitely a classic," I replied. It’s sure wasn't a contemporary dorm mirror you would find at Walmart or Target in the dorm, back to school section. "I know it’s a classic, but I kind of like it," I said. Roger was kind of right. The mirror was the only thing in the room that had a classic look to it. Everything else in the room looked modern.’

The synopsis outlines the story well – ‘Justina Oceans is just a regular college student about to start her second year of college in the fictional town of Summersville, Louisiana. Justina's ordinary college life takes a turn one night after she walks through an old mirror in her dorm room and goes back in time to 1932. While Justina is back in 1932 everyone believes that she is Laurice Haywoods, a famous star of the 1920's and 30's whose boyfriend is Braston Brawns, a talented musician whose career is taking off as well. During Justina's time travels she learns why the past keeps pulling her back into Laurice Haywoods' world back in 1932.’

Tasty bit of strange written in an accessible conversational manner that makes the time travel aspects even more credible. A fine quick read.

I found the author advertising her ebook in one of the Goodreads forums and decided to download it on Amazon for free.

It's a short story about a college student time traveling back and forth between the present and 1932. The writing starts out really amateur-ish but gets "better" when Justina Oceans starts to time travel.

I hate giving negative reviews on books and/or on writing. I tend to be somewhat generous, always giving that half-star for effort. Books are so personal because they stem from one's creativity and imagination, and I feel like a negative review is a blow to your artistic side. But then negative reviews are healthy in a way that they make you grow as a writer too.

The Mirror In My Dorm Room would have been better if it was edited. There were numerous grammatical errors and typos. At one point there was a switch in writing style, wherein the author got "better" with narration and story-telling, which makes me think if there were 2 authors originally instead of one.

Poorly edited, and sometimes feels scripted. It was unemotional and lacked depth. Truly disappointing.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of The Mirror in my Dorm Room

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of The Mirror in my Dorm Room for an honest review, I really enjoyed the story line and how Justina got to go experience the past and was walking an someone elses shoes. She was able to figure out what was going on and was able to fix the problem. The Mirror in my Dorm Room was a great read and i would recommend this book as a good read

I read this very short story (44 pages) on my Kindle because it was set in Louisana, a state I needed for a state challenge. I do NOT recommend this to anyone! It read like something a 9th grader would write for an English assignment. Bad grammer and punctuation Too much repeating as filler.. Some examples that really grated on me:

I sleep pretty good that night.
It was more cars in the parking lot.
I can't believe I'm back here in 1932. I thought.
It's enough talent around here to go around.
Thomas nor Lauren ever told she had saw.

The premise is that Justine, a sophomore in college has a private dorm room. In this dorm room is a mirror that pulls her back in time to the 30ties where she becomes Laurice Haywood. When she returns to her own time, she goes online to find out about this woman. She discovers that she was reported missing, goes back in time to discover that she saw a murder she never reported. The bad guys probably got her. So Justine (as Laurice) reports it and the crime is solved. Laurice lives a long and happy life.

Total Score: 4/5

Summary:
Imagine it is your first day back in school and you are mysteriously whisked away to a time years before you were even born. That gives the reader an idea of what Justina was going through. She had to deal with a different world than she lived in and a life that wasn’t her own leaving her wondering if it was a dream when she returned until the time she cam back in the clothing she had been wearing in the other life. It was interesting to she how she adapted to the differences between the times. Justina’s descriptions of the times and culture of the 10930’s brought them to life for the reader. Justina’s conflicts between her present life and what she experienced through the mirror was fascinating.

Summersville, LA. Justina Oceans (U of Summersville soph. college student; Marketing, English) is housed in the Bayousville Dorm # 47, 2nd floor.
Rayla (Justina’s BFF, Nursing) is in Bayousville Dorm # 63, 2nd floor.
Roger (Justina’s BMF, Chemistry) & his roommate Malcolm (band) are in Hooper Hall.
A look through the mirror & 8/1932, Jazz Nights nightclub. Jazz music was playing.
Braston Brawns (Laurice’s BF, musician) asked Ms. Laurice Haywoods (aka Justina, movie star) if she would care for some champagne.
Braston was in the Jazz group Rhythmics.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, & great font/writing style. A very well written time travel (short story) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great time travel movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 4/5 stars.

Thank you for the free Instafreebie; Author; PDF book

The time travel aspect hooked my interest. The thing that stands out right away is that this needed better editing. It needed some smoothing out and less redundancy. It was still worth the time to keep reading the beginning pages.
At 26% of the book, the author used the word "conversating."

This is a short review of a short novella, which follows in the worn tracks of that belief of the ancient Celts that on the other side of a reflective sheet of water lies a magical realm. The variation here is that the water is a mirror and the other side isn’t magical or mythical, just the same world of reality as us but at an earlier time (1930s). The author writes “30’s”, which is really annoying to pedants like me. I should also mention she puts on her massacre (mascara) at one point and there's also a mistake in the last line (Haywoods). As said, this is supposed to be real history, as opposed to Alice Through the Looking Glass, which was all dream consciousness. There’s quite a lot about dresses and makeup in this story too, but no tea parties or hats, thank heavens. Both the scenes of present and past are in America, from the days of saloons run by the mob to more contemporary college dorms and fraternities.

This is a rounded story, interesting enough, a writing exercise about what it would be like to step into the shoes of someone living in the past (and right the wrongs) but I found a lot of things which I didn’t get on with. Repetitive sentences like this didn’t help: “I made it to the mirror and to my surprise I was able to go back through the mirror”. This isn’t the only example of a sentence distracting from the flow. It also focusses on the very small scale, fiddling with one person’s life. If you had a portal with this scope, carte blanche access to amend the past, why not fix something huge that went wrong? Send the government a copy of the history of WWII or something. Tell them not to bother with Betamax. You could even fast forward civilisation by delivering a laptop in 1930, then go back to your own time and see if it’s better or just dystopian, then have the option of returning to 1930 to confiscate it and restore the earlier version of history – two cracks of the whip and choose the best one. I agree it’s not fair to talk about something that’s not in a book but the point I’m making is that the author chose to confine their imagination to the small scale. What a responsible time traveller they must be.

This is a short piece, so a lot of questions are inevitably left unanswered. Here are a few of mine: Who had the mirror before her? When she travels across and inhabits an entertainer’s body, where does that person go? Why don’t they enter her body and see her time, like a body swap? Are they aware of her presence, especially as she testifies in a case as them – would they have any memory of this or not think it was strange? Why wasn’t she put on the spot, invited up on stage and asked to sing something? Who made the mirror? Who had the mirror before her in the dorm room and why didn’t they take it with them? Why didn’t they try to enrich themselves with it? How does it work (physically), or is it just down to magic? Why does 1 day later in our time correspond to 1 day later in their time? Has she ever considered inviting someone to study the mirror? If she really wanted to be sure the past was locked and history couldn’t be re-written as worse, she could always smash it.

The concept of The Mirror and The Stone of Zozan is alluring. However, there is some vagueness and “telling” as opposed to “showing” the events unfold, but an interesting set-up and characters fill out this story. Some grammatical errors and repetition are to be found.

Stories from the present to Ancient Egypt are linked together and create good tension. A lot is at stake.

With an exotic local and an interesting premise, as well as characters to root for, this is a good story, despite its issues. It is a tale heavy on dialogue and light on setting with characters’ words filling in many of the blanks for this and characterization.

Plenty of intrigue fills the pages of this story, which is presented mostly in the present tense, for a sense of immediacy. Tension remains high throughout as characters with tough decisions to make press forth.

Justina is just a normal college student when a strange mirror in her dorm room brings her to the past. Using her past self and knowledge, she helps save a woman from a worrying fate.

I took this book because it was a short story and it was time travel. I love reading both so it was right up my alley. This book had a good story to tell, but the writing itself lacked. The problems in Grammar, punctuation, and repetitiveness all really hurt this story. It seemed like most of the story was just repeating phrases so as to fill space. It probably would have been half the length if all the extra things were taken out.

Honestly, the story of time travel was a good tale, I just wished the story was written better.

The Mirror in my dorm room is a short book time travel novel. It is about a college girl named, Justina who happens to walk through a mirror, going back to 1932. While she is exploring the past, she is considered as a celebrity dating a dashing musician. As she returns and reads more on Laurice Haywood, she discovered a great deal about her life and how she passed away.

I found several editing issues within the work which was a shame since I really liked the storyline. Although the book was short, the author manages to include many references to the timeframe she writes about. The plot is created with care, and it is apparent that the work has been researched.

I recommend this book to people who like to read short stories about time travel.

This is a Real Page Turner

I so appreciate the author creating real relatable characters and layering the duality of time travel from her college dorm room to a jazz night club where she was a star. I liked how instead of the regular time travel each time she came back time stood still. I don't want to spoil the story for would be readers of this book , but the intrigue is so worth it. I can wait to read her other books set during the Harlem Renaissance.

Ms. Beauregard, I prefer not to post reviews that I feel only earn two stars. I found your story an interesting one, but you need a good editor - there are many repetitions all through the work and several places where verb tense in incorrect - simple things that need to be fixed before the story will shine through. Sorry.

A Fun Read

This really needs to be proofread, but other than that, it's an enjoyable read. It's somewhat unsophisticated and, even considering the naive narrator, it should really be more complicated. I liked the fact that the heroine had a real motive to travel back in the past, in order to change something.

Grammar, punctuation and spelling need fixing. The story is OK, but the narrative needs improvement because there is a lot of unrelated information (all the details about student life seem like a long extract from an English test listening section). I mostly skipped those bits to try to get to the end of the story. A short story is fine, there's no need to "fill" the rest.

What college student hasn't daydreamed about going forward in time, to see how the world has changed and how their own life has turned out? In this story, the student goes back in time and gets to right a wrong from 85 years in the past. Neat little idea and story, but needs a good editor to sharpen things up.

I wanted to like Mirror In My Dorm Room, but I was hung up on the writing style. It read more like a report than a novel. The whole novella was written this way, even the dialogue. If people spoke this way to each other then you’d be forgiven for thinking they were robots.

The story is peppered with grammatical and sentence structure errors as well as repetition. If we skip past these issues and focus on the plot then the storyline is actually quite cute - perhaps a little too cute. The present day sections are like middle school meets college, but where everyone gets along with each other.

I found myself liking the 1930’s sections of the novella more than the present day. In the present day we are bombarded with schooling schedule and I would have loved to have seen relationship development between the characters. Perhaps it would have been nice to see a twist with one of the present day characters being related/linked to one of the past characters.

Mirror In My Dorm Room is quite a short read, perhaps that was the reason I was able to finish it, and I was disappointed that it wrapped up predictably and neatly. With some serious editing and further character development Mirror In My Dorm Room could be a good read.

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Justina Oceans starts her second year of college and everything changes when she walks through an old mirror in her dorm room and ends up as famous star Laurice Haywoods in 1932. Can she handle pretending to be Laurice and be in the company of her talented musician boyfriend Braston Brawns while she works out why she is being drawn back to 1932?

This is a short novella featuring time travel and the past events that happened to Laurice. I liked the underlying time travel story and the effects of Justina going into the past but I did find that the story was lacking the level of descriptive detail I would have expected. In summary a fairly quick read that was enjoyable although lacking in substance.

Good story line
I enjoyed the story but felt it was rushed and the characters two-dimensional. At this point, it is a great outline to a full-sized novel. A good editor would also help complete and polish the piece, as the story is quite good.
