Great for Immersive Intermediate Russian Learners

I think that I have picked up most of these books of foreign language short stories by Language Guru. The books are well suited for people who are just past the beginning stage of learning a language (not true beginners), especially a language like Russian that uses a different alphabet than English speakers are accustomed to. A rank beginner would most likely find this unhelpful.

After a very brief introductory section where they talk about intensive vs. extensive language learning, the core of the book follows: eight short stories that are written first in Russian in Cyrillic, followed by a vocabulary list that shows the Russian words and the English equivalent, followed by a quiz about the story in Russian, and ending with an English translation. As the authors discuss in that introductory section, these short stories are meant for extensive learning, where you read to immerse yourself in the language rather than try to look up every single word or point of grammar. For that purpose, I think these short stories work well. Having worked through the similar book in French, a language in which I am an intermediate learner, I recommend reading the vocabulary list offered before you read the story, as it will most likely provide vocabulary that you don't know and that will enhance your enjoyment of the story.

If you are learning Russian and understand the language at a beginning intermediate—some rudiments of structure and basic vocabulary—you may very well find this an excellent addition to your learning process.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

If you are studying Russian this is a very good book. I purchased the kindle edition for 3 or 4 bucks. It was the story of an ordinary guy and some really basic life experiences, work, relationships, working out, cleaning his apartment even. This is the kind of stuff you don't get in the textbooks.

Each chapter was a different subject about this guy's life and because you had an idea of what was going on it was easier to follow, sort of like listening to Russian speakers talking about a subject you know, you could follow even if you didn't get everything they said. I plan to read this again in a couple weeks and I think that will help me remember the vocabulary.

For the Kindle price it was an excellent purchase.

This is a great book for increasing vocabulary in Russian. While this would not be the first place to start learning a new language, I have found it helpful even for a beginner like me to build on a basic foundation.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
