This book is what I would qualify as a docu-drama in the OTT realm. I am a history buff so when I see something about a character I know not much I tend to pick that up. Historical fiction can be tricky territory and this book crosses the terrain like a clueless puppy.
In trying to give a balanced view of Nader Shah, the author seems confused as to how to portray this man. There is not much effort made creating a well rounded character with dark shades. It feels like the characters have been forcefully created around the historical events. A lot of it is sketchy at best.
I had picked up with book seeing some of the good reviews it got, but I am disappointed. There are way better writers of historical fiction. One can give this book a miss.
The diabolical acts of this monarch dwarfs the Hitler, he ordered for murder of every single soul in the city of Delhi and he repeated it in Ifshan. He gouged out eyes of his heir apparent, his beloved son Reza, that was gruesome and showed what a maniac he was
His idols were Taimur and Genghis Khan, he repeated the atrocities that happened in 13th and 14th century. He erected many conical towers and embedded in their niches the skulls of those who revolted against him. Nader was a Demon since his childhood, he killed his own brother by pushing him from a cliff and had the audacity to rape his childhood friend who became his wife and she finally avenged all the brutalities she went through by thrusting the dagger into Nader's body. After which she vanished into a thin air.
This book has improved my history and I am eager to read about brutal Taimur and Genghis khan.
I have always been a history buff and I love reading historical fiction. Hence when I came across The curse of Nader Shah, I made sure to pick it up. The book is penned by Sutapa Basu and is published by Readomania.
The book follows the story of Nader Shah, the ruler of Persia who went on to conquer almost all of middle east and Indian throne of Moghuls as well. The book focuses on a curse fallen on Shah, the mighty conqueror and the tyrant, and how this curse led to his downfall.
The story, right from the prologue towards the climax is quite interesting. Infact the cliffhanger left in the prologue keeps you hooked throughout which only goes on to say that the prologue is quite intriguing.
KoAuthor Sutapa Basu holds her reader spellbound through a sweeping narration. The book leave the reader amused at the sheer brilliance of the writer. With unbelievable amount of research and detailing author set the perfect example of how to blend fiction and history and make it informative, interesting and gripping. Excellent book on Nader Shah whose intelligent use of strategy made him supreme of Persia and demonic and tyrannical madness lead him into the grave. Language of the book is simple and easy to understand. The coverpage and title of the book is apt to the content and compel you to pick it up. A must read book. Highly recommend.** This review is a part of the Blogchatter book review program **
A good book. Definitely a lot of research has gone behind writing this book. My only qualm is that the author seemed confused between historical fiction and history while writing this book. Some parts are nicely fictionalized but others read like they have been picked straight from a history text book.
The curse of Nader Shah by Sutapa Basu is a historical fiction. The book clearly shows the rise and fall of a tyrant ! Nader Shah was a son of a humble Shepherd from the mountains of Persia. But his colossal ambition and bold strategy catapulted Nader Shah from a soldier to the Shah of Persia.
The book is well researched and it is commendable how the author mixes history with fiction.
Nader Shah is called a Tyrant in the history and rightfully so because he killed anyone who came in his way. It is not that he wasn't intelligent but is used his intelligence in a wrong way.
The books is slightly slow in the beginning but after that you can't put the book down! Each character has its own importance and is very significant. Sutapa Basu has portrayed emotions, behaviour, mannerisms of each character beautifully. A must read book for all those who love History and fiction.
Historical fiction is my favorite genre. The Curse of Nader Shah is a well-written book, weaving fiction into the life of one of the most powerful Persia rulers of history. The book encompasses Nader Shah's rise to power and then the course to win over territories reaching till India. As the title shelves out 'curse' and 'rise and fall', you expect a certain narrative flow and it takes this exact course. It is enticing to read the portions on India, the trail on 'Koh-i-Noor' and witnessing the Bamiyan Buddha statues. Many of the history textbook characters like Ahmed Shah Abdali and Mohammad Shah, the Mughal Emperor come alive while reading this book.
When history and fiction meet - you can expect an explosion! Those who are foraying into the reading of history will love this book. The tyrant who has other personality traits, those quirks and foibles are difficult to ignore in this book. While Nader Shah tries to fulfill his ambitions thinks go terribly wrong and that makes this book an interesting read. While his actions send shudders, they also alter the course of history. Go ahead pick this book that's a good mix of history, fiction, romance, kingship and human behavior.
