Sheriff Ben Stillman was informed by Crystal and her husband Toby, that they saw Doc Evans riding between two men and they were stretches out heading toward an abandoned ranch. Jacob Henry Battle a paid regulator for the Cattle Association has arrived in Clantick, Montana for what reason? Jacob Henry Battle was sentenced to thirty years in Deer Lodge, state prison back he was nothing but a killer who needed to be put down. Anyway he's out on parole, but the real reason per the Warden, was Battle was dying from "consumption," which Warden felt there wasn't any need keeping him jailed it would benefit the prison and the state would save money. .So they kicked him loose. This man murdered the other two marshals who were with SherIff Stillman when he was a U.S.Marshal they captured Battle. Since Jacob Henry Battle was released it was all about REVENGE for the time he spent in that "Hell Hole," where he suffered and got sick because the Warden didn't always provide heat for the prisoners. We all know that it gets mighty mighty cold in those states bordering Canada, surprisingly they didn't get frostbite. It's affecting his left side, he feels a paralysis a tightening sensation, he actually loses the use of arms and his knees buckle on him. You'll know this is a serious problem, especially in the kind of work Sheriff Ben Stillman is in. Well, this Jacob Henry Battle has handcuffed Sheriff Ben to a wood stove and told Ben what he was going to do to his wife and son Ben Junior. Ben could hardly walk but he made it back, almost blowed the lungs of the horse he was riding back to Clantick, but he made it. Jacob Henry Battle died with a surprised look, as Fay held her son, and her pistol pointed at Jacob Henry Battle..his coughing days are over..

Brandvold is an excellent author which I have enjoyed reading often. I have read and enjoyed most of the books in this series and enjoyed reading them all. I recommend this book and the series to you!
I thoroughly enjoyed this Ben Stillman book as I have others in the series. He puts a lot of twists in his book to keep you guessing what will happen next.
I was sure we were going to lose a favorite character in this novel. Lots of unanswered questions at the end of this book. I certainly didn't guess the storyline.
Ben has ha lot of close calls dealing with bad men. This story is no exception. Lots of bad men want to kill Ben and his wife. A great twist in the end.
Good but not as good as the previous Stillman books
Maybe its just me, but this book left way too many lose ends. I realize that it's a set up for more sequels, but it leave too many situations hanging & unanswered! I won't go into detail so I don't ruin it for those who have not read it yet but it's a little disappointing
