The Wrong Date

Rate this book
What happens when you fall for Ms. Wrong?

Annie Harland is rich, successful, and very single. So when an invitation to her tenth high school reunion drops on her mat, she's determined to skip it. Until a drunk evening with her best friend results in an appointment with an escort named Robin.

Robin is supposed to be bookish, well-muscled, and the owner of a golden retriever. Robin is actually tall, curvaceous, and very, very female.

Things should have ended at their very first meeting. But for some strange reason, Annie can't stop seeing Ms. Wrong. And Robin is Ms. Wrong, if only because she's a Ms. and not a Mr.

What should have been a story of high school revenge has turned into a romance, and Annie's life is about to be turned upside down. But love knows no labels, or does it?

The Wrong Date is a new stand-alone lesbian romance from Sienna Waters, the author of the Oakview and Monday's Child lesfic series.

This story lives on its characters. Both Annie and Robin are interesting in their own right. Annie is a successful tech nerd with low self-esteem. She hit it big with an app she no longer supports and can frankly live off those proceeds if she wanted to be bored for the rest of her life. So instead, she works with a real jerk of a project manager and puts up with fairly abusive behavior that isn't that exaggerated if you've ever dealt with a certain type of tech project manager. I detect a bit of author biography there, though that's just a feeling as her profile doesn't include career details.

Robin has plenty of confidence and an ability to read the room (including individuals) that stands her in good stead in her career as an escort. She acknowledges, both internally and explicitly with others, that the sex work is enjoyable, though not for the sex so much as for the connection she makes with others who need her enough to depart with money to be with her. We only really see her with Mrs. Richardson, a long-term client who illustrates for the reader the emotional intimacy of her job. It's an interesting focus, but I find it a bit of a cheat that we don't see any of the physical intimacy of her work on-page—I suspect because it a) detracts from the romance narrative and b) would be off-putting to many readers.

The two fall for each other relatively quickly and I'm glad to say that I think Waters pulled that off. It wasn't chemistry, though that was present, so much as it was an emotional compatibility that enriched both. Robin found someone who accepted her for all her aspects and didn't need her to be flawless. And yet who needed her strength and support as well. In other words, Annie was pretty much perfect for her.

And Annie really needed Robin at the same time. An emotional support who taught confidence through both coaching and example was exactly what she needed and earning Robin's unfiltered admiration was an additional boost that she hadn't looked for. I loved seeing the two together, and not least because Waters showed their conflicts and things they had to work through at the same time she showed their compatibilities and synergies. I liked seeing them work things out and accommodate their individual needs.

I'm not so much a fan of the dark moment, though it was presented honestly-enough and was a fissure they needed to work through. I could have dealt better with it if it had remained on that honest track. I kind of hate it when authors have a months-long separation and even more so when one of the characters is all "I needed to figure stuff out on my own." It's an immature view of relationships and a betrayal of the most important aspect of coming together as a team that is at the heart of being committed to one another. Solving problems together, talking through hard stuff, learning to communicate through the hurt, these are the things that build a lasting relationship. And we had been on track for them to have all of that. Until they didn't talk at all for two months after a dark moment.

That said, at least Waters has them both ascribe responsibility fairly and the reconciliation worked for me once they got past themselves. I think it's a bit of a cheat having .

Anyway, this comes in at four stars, mostly because I liked both characters and they make a great couple. It dodged some interesting potential and that dark moment chafes. I'm definitely interested in more from the author, though.

A note about Steamy: Interestingly for Robin's profession, there's only the one explicit sex scene putting this on the low end of my steam tolerance. It was exactly what it needed to be, so that worked out even better.

4 Stars - escorts are hot - this is a sweet romance - yes, I read it in all one sitting

So, sue me, I think escort stories are compelling, especially when when they are told the way this one is. It is actually a very sweet little romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story and both MCs were delightfully imperfect. Great secondary characters. Believable angst. Grand romantic gesture to reconcile. HEA and my fav, an epilogue tying everything up with a nice bow.

I would 100% read this again.

Melissa Moran's narration increased my enjoyment of the story
I’ve read a couple of books by this author and she delivers on the low angst department. I needed a “palate cleanser” after reading two emotional books so I was looking for a short romance to distract myself and came across this audiobook. The Wrong Date was the right choice after all.

Annie is a rich and successful software developer but when she’s invited to the ten-year anniversary reunion of her high school, she wants to skip it. Her best friend convinces her to hire an escort to attend instead. Annie chooses Robin who she imagines as a well-muscled and bookish man but instead, she’s curvaceous and a woman, Annie wants to call everything off but she clicks with Robin who puts her at ease so maybe they could go to the event together after all. But Annie wasn’t anticipating developing feelings for Robin…

The fake relationship trope is always a good source of entertainment as it’s fun to see how the characters connect despite their initial hesitation. Add some ingredients of opposites-attract romance and you have a very good story in the making. Both main characters couldn’t be more different if they tried, Annie has low self-esteem and is straight while Robin is a lesbian female escort confident and proud of her profession. The author builds their relationship on how they complement each other.

Despite their differences, both characters have to overcome personal hurdles and hangups before they feel ready to consolidate their relationship. For Annie, this is also a coming-out story in which she realises that her issues with previous relationships might have been rooted in her sexual preferences instead of her inability to find Mr. Right. I thought that their chemistry and the build-up to their romantic relationship could have been stronger but it was credible enough.

I’ve listened to a few audiobooks narrated by Melissa Moran and here, once again, did a very good job. Her narration increased my enjoyment of the story and made it more real. All in all, it is a good listen to spend a day or two. 4 stars.

Just barely a 3 because I'm feeling charitable this morning...Melissa Moran, please stop whining your lines :)

The premise of this one was good, but the delivery wasn't all there. The character and relationship development felt too much on the shallow and fast side for me - not surprising as it was pretty short.
It would have been better a bit more drawn out.

I am also NOT a Melissa Moran fan. I've only ever heard one book narrated by her that I can stand because I adore the story (Casting Lacey). Her narration is just really whiny and often times when she does character voices, it's like she's talking to a little kid in that patronizing, babying way adults do. Hard pass. This one would've been a better read for me, I think.

An escort and a millionaire..... Confident Robin and a not-too-straight and not-too-confident Annie. Overall an interesting read but somehow, somewhere along the line, I lost some interest with the build-up of the story....

3.5 stars. The premise sounded nice. I liked Annie and also Robin even more, as well as both their best friends. They had great chemistry. They were genuinely nice persons and it was pretty instalove.
However, it became weird once they both confessed their feelings. From there on it somehow wasn't romantic at all.
All in all, it was the whole escort - millionaire thing which made it somehow weird for me. Annie's back story wasn't really convincing. Robin's, yes, but I didn't quite see how Annie could be a freelancer coding superbrain and be a millionaire - i'd have thought she would have founded a company or something.
It was a nice, non angsty story though. I enjoyed it and the narrator, Melissa Moran, was good.

A promising start and could have been a great smutty book, however the characters decided to make some stupid ass decisions and the author decided to focus more on the personal than the spice (even though the spice was more fun than the stupid miscommunications and issues we ended up having to read about.)

An opportunity wasted, but still not an awful read.

MC Annie is a straight, wealthy yet humble tech genius who has mega confidence issues, and MC Robin is an escort she hires, initially thinking she is a he. Annie's high school reunion is coming up and she feels she needs someone on her arm to stick it to all the people who judged her as a teen. Nothing new here folks, but say it with me here: ESCORTS! Hooray! I was excited to dig into this baby. Automatic YES.

But beware, dear friends: this is Escort Lite. There are no racy details of Robin's sexploits, no chapters involving an abundance of experienced lady-lady scenes where Robin teaches Annie hot Sappphic looooove... in fact "escort" may as well be "bartender" or "long haul trucker." We get nothing. This was kind of disappointing, for the only bits of Robin's career that get any weight are her being paid to talk to a client for an hour. So, I was a little disappointed. There is one very short intimate scene that was over so fast I got whiplash.

Overall the book was fine, just very fluffy. The quickness of declarations of love (2 Weeks, and remember, Annie thinks she is straight up til now), and over the top language, just very.....nice. It's a nice book. I listened to the audiobook and had problems with the bouncy inflections of the narrator throughout, but persevered. I didn't connect with Annie and found her character to be kind of an asshole at times. And clueless. I also didn't feel the sparks between the two mains. I wanted to know more about them, but histories are barely scratched. 3/5.

Sometimes you can take a wrong and make it right. Annie has a concept of herself that seems to be holding her back from living her life fully. Robin puts people at ease for a living and she is just what Annie needs to move forward with her life. Of course Annie was expecting a male escort and doesn't known how to feel about being so drawn to a woman. Thank goodness for her best friend Fred. She is a perfect sounding board and voice of reason. Robin has never before developed feelings for a client. This can't work or so they both think. This story has just enough angst to pull at your heart strings. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I like the concept of escort & client romance. Just follow your heart and things have a way of working out.

Detailed score: 3.5

Enjoyable enough - particularly for KU - without being memorable enough to justify a round up.

The set up is great but loses a bit of steam and momentum in the executions

2.5 stars. This was fine, but I'm thinking I probably should have left it in the DNF pile. Neither character was particularly likeable, and both of them annoyed me in separate ways. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about the way sex work was talked about just didn't sit right with me. It wasn't disparaged or criticised or anything like that, but I don't know. Like I said, both women were a little annoying (Annie in particular didn't consistently read as a rags-to-riches character as she was meant to be; unless the book was actively reminding me of her humble roots, she just felt like a rich woman), and at the end of the day I just wasn't rooting for the romance at all. The third act conflict was one of the really annoying ones, imo. Two hours from the end of the book, I just sort of mentally checked out and I stopped caring whether or not they ended up together. It had no weight; I feel like this just kinda fizzled to an end.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Melissa Moran, and that was quite lovely. I really enjoyed her performance, but nothing about this romance truly spoke to me. I don't have any huge criticisms of it, except for gender essentialist language that isn't unique to this book, but overall, it just left no impression. Pity.

--

DNF at 21%. The premise is cute, but I'm just not connecting with the writing, or the characters (it feels very insta-lovey) and I feel like continuing with this when I'm not in the mood for it will just lead to me rating it lowly. Also there have been a few gender essentialist things that have bugged me.

I might come back to this one at some point.

Really enjoyed both the writing and premise of this book. The characters are well written and have real depth to them. Whilst the high school reunion story is a common idea - how we get there with the characters is anything but.

Loved the story so much I sat and read the whole book in one sitting - reading until 2.30 in the morning - so be prepared to make time to enjoy this one.

I really enjoyed the awkwardness of Annie and the confidence of Robin and how their relationship worked together. The HEA seems just right - and I'd really enjoy reading another book about these characters and what happened next.

Wow, I read that in one day and I don't do that very often anymore. I just LOVED this romance - from the meet cute to the characters it was exactly the feel good romance I was looking for.

I loved Annie. She's ridiculously successful but she hasn't outgrown the sense of not belonging and lack of confidence her upbringing as the janitor's daughter on scholarship gave her. She doesn't see herself clearly. So when it's time for a high school reunion she doesn't exactly feel confident about going, even though she has what everyone dreams of when the show up at one of these things - she's famously wealthy and genius. So, thanks to her friend, she decides to hire an escort. Named Robin. And surprisingly female. (which is hilarious, considering that her friend who convinced to her do this was also female and lesbian and BTW name Fred. You'd think they'd have considered Robin could be either or lol).

So it's a great meet cute with the mistaken identity thing. I also really like Robin and her self-confidence is easy to see as intoxicating. So I liked the way Annie, who is SURE she's straight, gets confused about her. I think that's one of the other things I loved about this book - the way it handled LGTBQ+ identity. It recognized sexuality as a spectrum and there's this great line from Fred about how Annie wouldn't fall / not fall for someone just because they were tall, short, Hispanic, etc. so why should sex be that big of deal? Don't you fall for a person, not their sex? (I do think they use the world gender, but I prefer sex because of the loaded construct of gender).

Anyway what follows is a fake romance turned real turned heartbreak and incredible character growth for both Annie and Robin. I laughed and I fell in love right along with them. Nothing mind blowing, plenty of predictable tropes done really well, for a really satisfying romance.

I probably got through it so fast because I was listening and the narration was top notch. Melissa Merand delivered a solid performance and at 2x speed I enjoyed every minute.

What a fun read! Actually five stars aren't enough ten out of ten? sounds about right. Did I say that I am an ardent fan of well written lesbian romance?

This book amused and grabbed me from the start. In equal measure! Wonderful characters, including the supporting ones, all of them so likeable or lovable respectively. There was really nothing missing here, fatal attraction from the start, fear, misconceptions about life and it's necessities, professional challenges, worries about sexual orientation and of course great sex, the full Monty.

Just like the movie of that title this story is heartwarming, funny, adorable and impossible to get out of before the closing titles (I hope I got my movie metaphores right there), in any cse I read it almost in one go with the exception of two breaks to brew coffee and make a sandwich. It was a lovely experience. And it left me with a smile on my face. I don't think a reading experience can get any more satisfying. I am sure to be reading more of Sienna Waters' work in the near future.

2.5/5 stars

This was a cute, but unremarkable story. I am a lover of the fake dating trope and even the 'wrong date' trope, so this book was definitely up my alley in that way. It was heartwarming at times, had lots of cute scenes and a very fast read. The feeling of this book is really just like sitting down, curling up in some blankets and watching an old favourite rom-com movie. While this book definitely provided the warm and cuddlies, it was completely predictable, the characters didn't stand out to me and it isn't a book that will stick with me. If you are looking for something cute and fun, I would recommend it, but it doesn't feel special or memorable.

Ugh one of my now favorite fauxmance-sapphic novels. I loved Annie's reaction to Robin and their chemistry from the get-go. We all need a Fred in life and I really enjoyed the pep talks and wise words from both MC's best friends. I was a little disappointed in that one line before they make it to the hotel room and thought it was resolved with Annie's apology at the bar resulting in some great steam. And then this line of conflict gets picked up again which I assume is normal with the escort plot lines but still made me groan a little in frustration. The following character development is great though and it's all worth it for a great ending so I'd still 100% recommend this!

The story was good. Writting was more connecting. The escorts love stories are one of my fav. But with this book i had few issues.
1. The story moves quick but too vanila for me.
2. There were many scenerio where i was enjoying but as they move forward i was left high and dry.

Anyway a good read Robin character was good but could be better drama was there but i felt like it was forced one. Side characters were there but i did not connect with them they are just used when "that friend guids to chase her or make them understand they are in love kind of situation" thats it

The Wrong Date by Sienna Waters.
3.5/5 🌟🌟🌟✨

In this book, shy Annie hires an escort to accompany her to a high school reunion. She picks a name randomly, but when Robin shows up, Annie is shocked to find she’s accidentally chosen a woman. Having not checked the profile, she was unaware that a woman would hire another woman despite her best friend being a lesbian. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I did find myself laughing at the beginning of the book, but unfortunately, the second act lost its appeal. This book was a little far-fetched for my liking.

I felt that, at some points, the characters were a little inconsistent. It’s not like months had passed to allow the characters to grow. Annie wants to learn to be confident, so she hires the assertive Robin, hoping to learn from her. She goes from a shy, straight woman to being in love with Robin overnight. Yes, sometimes people fall hard and fast; been there, done that. But as the reader, you have insight into the character’s psyche. I didn’t expect her just to roll over and think oh, I’m gay now, okay… Maybe I just didn’t connect with the characters.

Annie just seems to accept that Robin has sex with other people for a living. She thinks that she can disassociate sex from love, although Annie’s best friend appears to be sleeping with a different woman every other day, so maybe she can.

At just over 200 pages this is an entertaining short romance navel. Annie Harland has made a lot of money as a coder but still feels inferior to the others. It stems from being the brilliant scholarship student at an elite high school. While drinking her best friend suggests she hire an escort and sets up a meet. She doesn’t look at the profile but chooses a name. Robin isn’t who Annie is expecting, mostly because she isn’t a man. I thought this was a very fun meet cute. in fact I found this book because an excerpt is included in Meet-Cute which is a compilation of cute meetings in romances. Annie decides that she is comfortable with Annie and wants to learn from her self confidence. So they agree to continue to date and prepare for the reunion. I didn’t love the friends much in this book. Fred, even though she is a BF says and encourages the escort thing says some really awful things about the profession. And Robins BF keeps throwing out references to sugar daddies and mommas which I thought was cringeworthy. But the main romance is decent and is based on comfort and compatibility more than lust. Considering Robin is an active escort no other partners or sex is included. There is one intimate scene with the main characters and low end heat.

Even in the the wrong moment a new beginning can be beautiful,

Where can I start to say how glorious this quirky story will fill your heart. Annie is a quiet genius and a little backwards emotionally. Her friend Fred convinces her to hire an escort to go to her 10 year reunion at the prestigious private school she never felt like she belonged to. A simple name choice brings Robin into the picture and neither will be the same. Annie and Robin have this hot connection that they just don't want to admit to and Robin is an escort. This story is full of funny moments, delightful friendships and a love for the ages. The journey they take to loving each other is both difficult and exciting. This a fun read that simply could not put down. I laughed, needed a fan for their hot moments together but love these two women with great passion. Vienna Waters bring together some of the most complex emotions and gives us a brilliant love story.

I thought this was quite cute. I don't typically expect a story with an escort to be sweet and cute but this definitely was. I absolutely loved Robin's confidence in herself and her job.

I did think the relationship moved pretty quick from just starting out to being in love.

I do wish the end

while I thought it was super cute, I also felt something was missing. It would have benefitted from more chemistry and background on the characters. 3.5 stars

A fake dating f/f story!

I didn't totally get Annie, she had surprising low confidence given her (massive) success in life. But I liked the story and the characters and, again, fake dating, is my favorite trope.

A good KU find.
