Fans of disgraced lawyers and southern noir are going to love the Jake Burbank series because if you can’t root for the underdog, at least you can buy him a drink.
Short story featuring a drunken lawyer framed for not one but two murders when an ex-girlfriend seeks him out to get some money left to her by one lover but denied her by another lover. The momentum of the story is continual, as lawyer Jake and cop Maggie find out the truth behind the obvious frame-up.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written crime thriller (short story) book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters & facts to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is an amazingly easy rating of 5 stars.

Really good short story. Jake is a contract lawyer who never really made it. Now he's drunk most of the time, lost his land but still owns his house and has just the money in his pocket. His ex live in girlfriend finds him passed out on his front porch gets him sober and makes him a proposition he can't refuse. Murder is what follows and Jake is in the hot seat. He's got a couple of good friends left so there is a chance the truth will come out. It's a story that will keep you wanting more, easy to predict but that doesn't ruin any of it, it's still fun to read. I like Jake and you will too.
This is one of my first novels I have read by Chris Lowry. I am very impressed. I feel I must note that there is explicit sex in this novel, as well as what I would see as racism, homophobia, and some physical and sexual abuse. That said please read being aware of your own impression. The story is well developed, a real page turner. You have a lawyer her drinks too much. A past girlfriend that comes back into the picture. And an unbelievable amount of havoc takes place. This is a real page turner. You will not want to put it down. Have fun!
Jake is a lawyer and investigator down on his luck. In a prequel story he wrote a contract for a BBQ shack owner to franchise his secret sauce and made a lot of money but that’s all gone now. His reputation is shot and someone is out to get him. An enjoyable read.
Trouble keeps on finding him…….This southern noir mystery thriller, about lawyer Jake Burbank, is an engaging read that provides lots of reasons to love an underdog. It also reminded me of the influence of money, as the oldest reason for crime; and if money’s involved, The Mob will be too. Regrettably, I found the pace somewhat turgid and was also irritated by the poor editing.
I think I found what were you this story was it times it was difficult to follow because you are there kept jumping between different characters and if you didn't pay attention you wouldn't remember what was happening with either 1 of them so I don't know it was pretty good story
This was a Jake Burbank mystery. The main character is Jake. In just one day he is set up with 2 murders. With the help of his friend Maggie, a cop, he gets to work on finding answers to solve these problems. They are looking for someone who set him up. Can they figure this out before it's too late to save him?
Jake used to be a good lawyer until things turned bad for him. Now he just wants to drink his life away. But an ex-girlfriend wants a 'favor'. That leads to all kinds of problems for Jake. I liked this story. To me it wasn't a dark story, kind of light-hearted and lots of smart aleck remarks. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Interesting story of an attorney who gets himself in trouble. He tries to figure out a way to get out of trouble, but the stakes seem high as he fights the problems. Will he be able to keep his house, that was put up for bail? Will he be able to stay alive, with the people chasing him and trying to kill him?
This was so funny I had tears streaming down my cheeks! Laughing out loud until I couldn’t breathe! I will be giving this book to my husband and friends as a gift! Don’t miss this great book! I will definitely finish the series!
A failing lawyer turns to the bottle to help solve his problems. An ex girlfriend asks him for help & he ends up being charged with two murders. Fortunately for him, he has a female deputy as a friend, help tries to help him.
I thought that overall this was a good read. I found the book quite engaging with a good pace. The ending seemed a little sudden but did not detract from the story.
A down on his luck, alcoholic lawyer tries to help his ex girlfriend get a million dollars from a dead millionaire's son, and it does not go well, especially after the son gets murdered.
Jake an alcoholic lawyer seems to work best after he has a few drinks. He is set up for murder and it appears that everyone is against him except Maggy a detective. humorous and well written . well worth reading.
