How could he tell her no…
…even after she broke his heart.

When a woman from Jake’s past finds him passed out on his front porch, she makes him breakfast and an offer he can’t refuse.

Help her get the money owed to her and he gets a percentage.

And her.

He’s dead broke and needs a drink so the walking around money has appeal. Plus the promise of another night with her to sweeten the pot?

What’s supposed to be a short visit turns into an accidental murder charge and his ingénue is nowhere to be found.

Jake’s going to need all the help he can find if he hopes to get out of the mess she dropped him in the middle of.

Fans of disgraced lawyers and southern noir are going to love the Jake Burbank series because if you can’t root for the underdog, at least you can buy him a drink.

A pint of problems indeed!

A washed-up lawyer loses, literally, his girl, and he lands in a heap of trouble. He has enemies who would love to see him out of the picture.

The girl is nowhere to be found, and he's trying to investigate what's going on before he ends up in jail or dead.

A LOT happens in this short story, so I'll leave it here.
,
Hopefully, there is another book in the series to finish where we left off!

Short story featuring a drunken lawyer framed for not one but two murders when an ex-girlfriend seeks him out to get some money left to her by one lover but denied her by another lover. The momentum of the story is continual, as lawyer Jake and cop Maggie find out the truth behind the obvious frame-up.

Pine Bluff, AK. Gretchen (ex-GF) & Jake Burbank (lawyer) had been estranged for a while.
She decided to rekindle the flame by taking a shower with him 1 morning.
In bed they were on their 3rd round of sex.
She had quite the story to tell him.
Whit Baker (60+ father, Gretchen’s ex-lover, billionaire) supposedly died of a heart attack while George Baker (40+ son, Gretchen’s ex-lover) & her were having sex.

Whit left Gretchen a fortune, but George won’t let her touch it.
Little Rock, AK. Jake went to see George.
It didn’t go as planned but Jake got a free lunch & the was accosted by 3 thugs.
Sheriff William “Dub” Brazil pulled Jake over.
Jefferson County courthouse. Jake was released into the custody of Detective Maggie “Mags” Dalton (PBPD, lesbian).
Back into custody Detective Jay Martin (PBPD homicide) was interrogating Jake.
Jake was under arrest for the murder of George Baker of Little Rock.
In jail Deonte just happened to save Jake’s life.
Jake later saw Judge Wyoming Jenkins.

How will Jake’s trial turn out?

Will Jake ever see Gretchen again?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

Warning: This book contains descriptive accounts of extremely graphic adult content (racial hatred), violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material (Lesbian, adult verbal, psychological, emotional, physical & sexual abuse) which is only suitable for mature readers.

It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader. If you are especially sensitive to this type of material, it is strongly advised not to read any further.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written crime thriller (short story) book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters & facts to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is an amazingly easy rating of 5 stars.

Really good short story. Jake is a contract lawyer who never really made it. Now he's drunk most of the time, lost his land but still owns his house and has just the money in his pocket. His ex live in girlfriend finds him passed out on his front porch gets him sober and makes him a proposition he can't refuse. Murder is what follows and Jake is in the hot seat. He's got a couple of good friends left so there is a chance the truth will come out. It's a story that will keep you wanting more, easy to predict but that doesn't ruin any of it, it's still fun to read. I like Jake and you will too.

This is one of my first novels I have read by Chris Lowry. I am very impressed. I feel I must note that there is explicit sex in this novel, as well as what I would see as racism, homophobia, and some physical and sexual abuse. That said please read being aware of your own impression. The story is well developed, a real page turner. You have a lawyer her drinks too much. A past girlfriend that comes back into the picture. And an unbelievable amount of havoc takes place. This is a real page turner. You will not want to put it down. Have fun!

First book in the series

Jake is a lawyer and investigator down on his luck. In a prequel story he wrote a contract for a BBQ shack owner to franchise his secret sauce and made a lot of money but that’s all gone now. His reputation is shot and someone is out to get him. An enjoyable read.

Trouble keeps on finding him…….This southern noir mystery thriller, about lawyer Jake Burbank, is an engaging read that provides lots of reasons to love an underdog. It also reminded me of the influence of money, as the oldest reason for crime; and if money’s involved, The Mob will be too. Regrettably, I found the pace somewhat turgid and was also irritated by the poor editing.

Good storyline

I think I found what were you this story was it times it was difficult to follow because you are there kept jumping between different characters and if you didn't pay attention you wouldn't remember what was happening with either 1 of them so I don't know it was pretty good story

This was a Jake Burbank mystery. The main character is Jake. In just one day he is set up with 2 murders. With the help of his friend Maggie, a cop, he gets to work on finding answers to solve these problems. They are looking for someone who set him up. Can they figure this out before it's too late to save him?

Jake used to be a good lawyer until things turned bad for him. Now he just wants to drink his life away. But an ex-girlfriend wants a 'favor'. That leads to all kinds of problems for Jake. I liked this story. To me it wasn't a dark story, kind of light-hearted and lots of smart aleck remarks. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Interesting story of an attorney who gets himself in trouble. He tries to figure out a way to get out of trouble, but the stakes seem high as he fights the problems. Will he be able to keep his house, that was put up for bail? Will he be able to stay alive, with the people chasing him and trying to kill him?

This mystery is interesting but has quite a few grammatical errors. There’s not much background on characters as it’s definitely a plot driven tale.

I thought that overall this was a good read. I found the book quite engaging with a good pace. The ending seemed a little sudden but did not detract from the story.
