Dog and frogs are hungry for lunch, but hog keeps stealing their food.
I appreciate the bright, colorful illustrations and kid-appealing characters of the recent Acorn beginning reader series by Scholastic. These books are designed with kids in mind, in addition to containing elements of a good beginning reader title. Hog on a Log is a fun addition to the Frog and Dog titles, though these might be my least favorite of these new series. The focus on short, rhyming words is great, but the illustrations have a lot going on that adds humor to the text--but can be more confusing for a beginning reader trying to use the pictures as clues.
I love this series for early reading instruction, but Hog on a Log gets a little too chaotic for me toward the end (especially the PIE story). There was too much happening all at once, and therefore the story seems a bit hard to follow for beginning readers, who don't yet have much practice "reading between the lines" and inferring missing information, and who might get lost in the busy image and text clues.
That said, this series is truly outstanding considering some of the garbage that is sold as "beginner's books." So I would still recommend Hog on a Log over many other books written for beginning readers.
Children's I Can Read. Dog and three frogs are hanging out peacefully, just trying to get a peach from a tree, when along comes hog. Not only does hog snag the peach, but also tricks Dog into handing over other food. Luckily hog learns a lesson at the end and everyone shares. A silly book full of rhyming (great words to practice if your little one needs help with the g ending sound!), humor, and bright colorful illustrations. Text includes some narration and some graphic novel speech bubbles, which reduces word count by eliminating speech tags. This is technically 3rd in a series but can certainly stand on its own.
This installment of the Frog and Dog series contains the stories: * "Peach" * "Lunch" * "Pie"
Young readers will relate to the experience of interacting with someone whose has an "I got mine" attitude and behaves inconsiderately towards others. Thankfully, Hog learns to share by the end of the book.
This beginning reader features common sight words, rhyming words, and words from word families. It is from the same publisher as the Bumble and Bee series but is ideally suited for children just beginning to read independently. It uses short simple text with simple straight forward plots and engaging illustrations.
"Hog on a Log" is a comic book made for early readers that features Frog, dog, and hog. Frogs and Dog meet Hog and they are all on a log. Young readers will relate to the experience of interacting with someone who has an "I got mine" attitude and behaves inconsiderately towards others. Thankfully, Hog learns to share by the end of the book. This beginning reader book features common sight words, rhyming words, and words from word families. I think this would be a great addition to my classroom library for my beginning readers.
Hog is not playing nice on the log or sharing lunch well. Will he learn?
I was very glad to see Hog get his just desserts eventually. The font in this is large, and the words super simple, making it a good pick for kids just learning to read.
Read aloud to my 4 year old son! Frogs and Dog meat Hog, and they’re all on a log....rhymes galore and pictures that tell the story, this is fun for the littles or beginning readers!
Easy to read books like this are usually disappointing, so I had low expectations. However, this book was surprisingly clever and cute. The illustrations are simple without being juvenile.
