K. A. Miltimore is a writer living in the Pacific Northwest who has followed the advice of her 5th grade teacher, Miss Hammond, and become a writer. She loves mid-century fashion, 80s music and nachos (not necessarily in that order). With her husband and son, she loves exploring quirky local towns, and dreams of dragging them both to Iceland for a tour someday. Her tombstone will likely read "Always Creating". In addition to writing, she enjoys making jewel spiders, looking for great Washington red wines, and re-watching the movies that she has forgotten over the years.

CREATING CINDERELLA

I have had the great pleasure of reading this collection of twelve magical tales. Each story is as unique as its author and each story captures the spirit of Cinderella; meaning that the main characters in these tales overcome the odds against them in order to become their true selves. The variety of settings, times and places, plots with twists and turns, as well as individual and varied styles, makes this collection a delight to read. I do have my favorites: Andromeda, by Natasa Xerri, a dark and beautiful fairy tale that still haunts me, Sugar Plums and Satin, by Rachel Nightingale, about a mysterious gifted ballerina, Pumpkin VS the Glass Slipper, by K. A. Miltimore, which takes us into the world of female wrestling, and The Weeper in the Ashes, by E.H. Alger, the best darn retelling and reinventing of the original Cinderella I have ever read. But, as in any collection we might read, we are each bound to have our favorites. The good news is that all twelve tales engaged me, held my attention and gave me food for thought. They did what they set out to do: capture the soul, the essence of Cinderella.
E.H. Alger, who is also a well-loved illustrator, created the beautiful front and back covers of this book, a tapestry of enchanting animals. And that bring us to the last but not the least joyful aspect of this collection. These wonderful Australian authors are donating the profits of this book to the Australian Bushfire Relief Fund. These fires have been catastrophic. This book pays honor to the lives that have been lost, families who have lost their homes, the over three billion wild animals that have perished, the sacred homeland of the Indigenous People of Australia, which has been devastated; ancestral plants, trees and animals lost. And this book also honors the emergency service teams who courageously fought these fires, the people of Australia who have come together to rebuild, and to all those around the world who have shown compassion and have given support.

From a ballerina, a young boy, spider people, a mouse's point of view, the wrestling world, and even the prince's point of view... Twelve incredible tales, retold and with imaginative elements from the world of Cinderella. A line up of twelve writers, each with their own strong voice and ones I will sure to keep an eye out. To say I had a favourite would be unfair, as each story was unique and different, and just when I thought the last one I'd read was the best, the next was just as good. Such a treat to have been able to read these stories!

I have been fortunate enough to be selected as an advance reader of this new book. I didn't know what to expect...I'd been told it was an anthology of stories based on the tale of Cinderella. I hadn't read Cinderella since I was a child but one never forgets the wonderful story of magic and romance and happily-ever-after. I also love the ballet of Cinderella, with its magnificent, atmospheric music written by Prokofiev. The music brings the story so alive that it's quite a part of my psyche. What I found most interesting about these stories was the vastly different "takes" the authors had, and how they rose to this challenge. I really lost myself in this book! Obviously there was going to be favourites. My absolute choice is the final story "The Weeper in the Ashes" by E.H. Alger. This tale had everything...handsome hero, sad, beautiful princess, ruined castle...plus all the necessary modern day ideas and accoutrements that all melded together to create a breathtaking slant on the Cinderella saga. Beautifully written, it was a wonderful way to finish the book. It was lovely to read another story from this author who also penned "Winterhued", one of my all time favourite fantasy novels. So...on to the other stories in this captivating book: standouts are "Sugar Plums and Satin" by Rachel Nightingale. I've mentioned my love of ballet so this was right "up my alley" and so expertly written. Another wonderful twist to the tale. "Gibson's Hope" and "Andromeda" are also up near the top of my list. Having said that however, I really enjoyed the book as a whole, and I particularly love the cover, illustrated by E.H. Alger. So go ahead and purchase this! You will be helping some of the surviving wildlife of Australia's devastating bush fires in early 2020. A very worthy cause indeed. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Creating Cinderella is a collection of short stories that each have a twist, modern take, or different perspective on the fairy tale, Cinderella.

Over-all, I thought nearly every story was excellent, which is truly the mark of a great collection. The writing and editing was consistently good as well. The following were my three favorites.

Pumpkin vs. The Glass Slipper – A story about a female wrestler who has paid her dues and both wants and deserves a shot at the limelight. There was such a great atmosphere and character development in this story that I was immersed into it right from the start and was cheering on the hero all the way. I also appreciate the creativity behind twisting the tale of Cinderella into such an unexpected environment.

A Tail – Here we get to see the traditional Cinderella story from a completely unexpected perspective, and the ending is wonderful.

Andromeda – I won’t say specifically who this one is about so as not to spoil it for readers, but the atmosphere and grittiness won me over. It kind of felt like I was reading a whole new fairy tale, and it was great.

Honorable mentions for Sugar, Plums and Satin – a story that takes place during a dance audition, and Saving Cinderella – a feel good story about a spider of all things.

I would recommend this collection for pretty much anyone, but especially if you like fairy tales.

Once upon a time... four little words that mean very little when all alone; but string them together and something magical happens. We have come to expect a story that is sure to delight the imagination, bringing vivid visions to our eyes, music to the ear and our brain perks up to expect the unexpected. I was not disappointed! I wholeheartedly agree that Cinderella was not a helpless girl; but rather through her own actions, faith, caring and belief in herself that she “saved” herself. These stories give us a fresh and different (I’m using these words loosely) take on Cinderella.

A few of my favorites include A Tail, a strange and delightful tale gone awry (I do believe the pun was intentional), Gibson’s Hope which could be Cinderfella, Stepmother gives a whole other slant to the word and Princess Myna and the Ember Snake that sucked me in with the symbolism. These twelve authors took a favorite childhood story and spun it their way... I was not disappointed. I was enthralled.

The icing on the cake? The cover design by E. H. Alger featuring Australian wildlife.

There’s another plus about this book...the profits will be donated to the Australian Bushfire Relief Fund. These fires have been horrific and devastating to the people, animals, land and history.
BRAVO!

Fantastic anthology- varied in the story style, the takes on the Cinderella story (or aspects of it), and incredibly creative. There is something for every reader in this collection! From Fae to Dragons, to modern day wrestling and lyrical poetry- it’s all here. Plus, the profits go to a great cause- you get hours of entertainment and to help the wildlife recovering from the Australian brush fires. What’re you waiting for?

I was impressed with the variety of ways to tackle the theme in this collection of stories. Some stories pulled me in more than others, but overall the talent involved is really good.

Great creative collection of rifs based on the original Cinderella story. This anthology rethinks the classic. The first story is one of a ballerina who loses her shoe. The second a cautionary tale of mice protecting their good life to the detriment of anyone else. The third about an architectural competition. All of the stories have a twist, and one even gives the stepmother’s point of view. Fun stories; recommend.

I've decided to review this book, even though i am one of the contributing authors, for two reasons.

1. My story aside, the eleven other tales i had the pleasure of reading were incredible and deserve a review.
2. I'm so proud of this anthology and what it represents that i feel compelled to share with you all what this book means to me.

K.A Miltimore, the lovely human behind this project, brought the 12 of us together and asked if we would be interested in submitting a story to a Cinderella themed anthology. I was won over straight away once i learnt that the proceeds would be going to WIRES, a charity organization who help rehabilitate our Australian wildlife from the devastating bush fires of 2019-2020.

In this collection you will find stories of utter enchantment. Each one is unique and each written with love and passion.
The twelve of us have come together and freely offered our craft to you in various ways. From the cover art, which was designed by the insanely talented E.H Alger (another contributing author), to the editing and the book design, the advertising and the stories themselves, were all provided by us with one thing in mind. We were creating something wonderful, something that could benefit our beautiful country from the massive impact the fires had on us... on our beautiful wildlife.

So i hope you all enjoy our stories, i hope you can relive the magic of this ancient tale that we have twisted and formed into our own version of the telling. And if you don't enjoy it, that's ok too. Because regardless, your purchase has gone to a very good cause and for that, we cannot thank you enough.

Much love and thank you... from the bottom of our hearts.

What a beautiful collection of original tales inspired by the Cinderella fairytale!

Every story in this collection is admirable. The modern Cinderella characters created by the contributing authors possess wonderful qualities of our classical Cinderella: she (he) is hardworking, kind, forgiving, hopeful, she believes in miracles, and never gives up.

Sugar Plums and Satin written by Rachel Nightingale, Pumpkin vs The Glass Slipper by K.A. Miltimore, The Weeper in the Ashes by E.H. Alger, and Andromeda by Nataša Xerri are really memorable.

A curious vision of stepmother’s traumatic youth stunned me. (Find it! 😊) I loved it because it resonates with my belief in the power of goodness. There is always some hidden pain that shadows the ability to love. Cinderella-like people are compassionate and gifted with the ability to listen without judgment — they are natural healers of human hearts.

This book is a charitable project. It was created to support those who are helping wildlife impacted by the Australian wildfires. Kudos to all authors for this gorgeous collaboration in the name of charity! Beautiful, heartwarming work!

All those who love fairytale retellings will want to add the anthology, Creating Cinderella, to their collection. A composite of twelve short stories which are prompted by the much beloved Cinderella tale, the authors use their diverse imaginations to twist the story into unexplored avenues.

The reader will be tantalized of tales from sabotaging mice to gender reversals, ballet prima donnas to wrestling divas, and prose to lyrical poetry. It’s a smorgasbord of variations for readers to indulge in when they’re looking for a quick but creative escape.

Even more impressive, the proceeds from this book are being given to help the wildlife impacted by the wildfires in Australia.

It’s a wonderful anthology written by extremely talented authors so it definitely deserves 5 stars. I highly recommend it to all those who love fairytale retellings

"Creating Cinderella" is a collection of twelve short stories all based on the traditional Cinderella fairy tale. I have never actually read the original "Cinderella," but I am familiar with the fable and the 1950 Disney film.

As a "fresh take" on Cinderella, this story collection included a variety of point of views, including the famous tale from the point of view of a mouse. A collection of stories all based on the same trope/fable seems like it could become repetitive, but each take was fresh and unique, and every author brought a strong writing voice to the table.

I enjoyed every story in this anthology. If I absolutely had to pick my favorite, I would say it was probably "Saving Cinderella." Other special standouts included "Andromeda" and "The Weeper in the Ashes." But all the stories here are definitely worthy of reading--this is the rare anthology where I can truly say I liked every story, making the book as a whole easy to rate.

Finally, I don't normally review covers, but I am a visual person, and I will admit I've bought books for their covers. Haha! The cover of "Creating Cinderella" is gorgeous and features Australian wildlife; this is appropriate as the proceeds from the book benefit animals injured in the bushfires in Australia.

Highly recommended.

(I received a review copy of this novel from the publisher, but I am leaving this review of my own choice.)

Creating Cinderella is a charming anthology of 12 stories, using the theme of the classic children’s fairy tale, Cinderella.
The trope is represented in surprising ways, with each author imagining Cinderella in modern and olden day settings; as female and male; and not always in human form! The anthology addresses different aspects of love and opportunity, and the opposing forces of self-interest and benevolence.
Readers are taken into dark corners where the baddies are bad, and also into light-filled sunrooms where readers are inspired never to give up their dream.
It is fitting that the net proceeds from this anthology—where a fire hearth is an important element—will support the work of Australian wildlife relief efforts particularly in the face of the devastating bush fires experienced in 2020

I very much enjoyed this book featuring twelve unique and diverse stories that recreate the Cinderella fairy tale. There has to be something for everyone here. There were a few stories that were my favourites but overall, it was an enjoyable read. It would be a fabulous book to read during the lead up to Christmas when everyone is busy and you can read one story a day over a cup of coffee.

Congratulations to all the authors.

This is an anthology written by many authors and the proceeds helped the fire victims in Australia. I love Cinderella, and it was a good cause, so of course, I had to buy it. Plus, the cover is gorgeous and captured my attention immediately.

I'm not a huge fan of anthologies. Just when you're enjoying one style of writing, it ends and then you have to read a different format by another author that you may not enjoy as much. I can't rate each separate story, so I kept this at four stars. Some of the tales had a super fun or unique approach to retelling Cinderella's story, and there were some that just didn't work for me. Overall, I think it was a great cause and I'm glad I read it.
