I had to recently read another summary book by this company of Mary Trump's book that I thought was actually pretty decent, even if imperfect. But with this one, the publisher has reverted back to bad summary habits, including the one I find the most annoying: telling us the summary (e.g., “ The author begins the chapter…”) instead of simply summarizing (e.g., “White fragility is…”). The individual chapter summaries were too short, and certainly, gaps impeded comprehension. I also didn't feel like the writing itself was well done. The publisher has a weird way of doing the chapter titles, too. Instead of just using the original book's chapter titles, it has very long ones that include the original book's title and subtitle as well as the chapter title. For some reason, there are three sets of trivia questions at the end instead of just one. I think these could have been condensed as they are not that long. Also, the trivia and discussion questions weren’t always the best choices, though some were okay. All in all, I was disappointed by this one, especially after recently reading one that was not too bad by this publisher.
With all that has been going on in the US because of our troubled past and present with race, I had to pick up this summary to get a better handle, I’d hoped, on one aspect of it--one that I hadn’t considered, and one that isn't often discussed. This summary really got me thinking, and I now want to read the original book to delve into this more and think about how this has been reflected in my own life. I appreciated the trivia and discussion questions, too, as they helped me distill the book down to the most important takeaway points.
I was gifted this as an e-ARC but this is my honest opinion.
