The Ghost in the Curve

Rate this book
Sloane Reid has never believed in ghosts, even though she made a career out of playing a ghost slayer on film.

When the studio tells her at twenty-nine she’s too old to be a scream queen, Sloane retreats to her aunt’s remote Florida cabin to figure out what comes next.

Her trip is anything but relaxing when she encounters Chelsea, a young girl who died near the cabin thirteen years ago.

Chelsea is desperate for Sloane’s help to reveal the truth that haunts her, but Sloane can’t solve the mystery alone. She needs to ask for help from local deputy Tristan Rogers, which means she’ll have to convince him she’s not crazy. Or a criminal.

As Sloane and Tristan unlock the secrets of the past, the stakes grow higher for them both, and soon Sloane finds it may be her own life that needs saving.

A Ghost in the Curve by Violet Howe

Romantic mystery. 1st book in the Cedar Creek mystery series.
Actress Sloane Reid escapes to the small town of Cedar Creek. She is broke and not sure what the next step in her career will be. Trying to talk to her agent on a cell phone without a good connection brings her down to the dock at the lake where a ghost interrupts her phone call. The ghost in the lake wants Sloane to find her family.
Forgetting the alarm code at her aunt’s cabin brings Deputy Tristan to the scene where things go south quickly.
Can Sloane find the family and resurrect her career at the same time?

I did not like the heroine to start with. At all.
She won’t answer the straightforward questions from the deputy. Then gets mad at him for doing his job. She has no job, no money and yet she ignores the request from her agent for an address to send her a script to review and instead goes home to drink.
Now both situations had other things going on. When the deputy is asking questions, the house alarm is going off.

40% through. Still do not like the heroine. She wants the deputy to trust her, yet she won’t explain about the ghost. She yells at him that she doesn’t need protection, yet her house was trashed and she’s being threatened. And she still won’t tell him even though he is practically begging her to share. To trust. To help him understand and do his job.

Finally at 50% she admits she is at fault for a lot of the problems. Ok, slightly redeeming herself.

In the end, the book was complicated and compelling. The characters are consistent throughout and I still wanted to yell at Sloane for her independent stance.
I loved Tristen for his strong moral character, and his ability to believe in Sloane and her ghost.

I loved this story. At first I was not sure I would have liked this book as it was a combination of suspense, ghosts and romance but it started intriguing me and I am happy I continued reading it. The plot really kept my attention all the way to the end that is great. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book as it captures you right from the beginning!

My first book by Ms. Howe and it won’t be my last.

I can’t say enough about this book but it’s a must read. Amazing really does not begin to cover it.
It grabbed me from the beginning all the way to the end. It made me laugh, cry, and it grabbed my heart. So pick this book up. You won’t be disappointed.

Sloane Reid’s contract is up now as the teenage Scream Queen.
Now off for a little R&R at her Aunts cabin in Cedar Creek. On her
first night not so much. That’s when she meets Deputy Tristan Rogers.
It’s funny to say the least.

What Sloane does not expect to do in this little town is to hear, and see a ghost.
She may play and act on screen as a ghost slayer. But this is way to crazy for her to
believe. More when she helps said Ghost.

Tristan Rogers has no clue why wants to help Sloane. But when things start
happening to her he’ll do anything to protect her.

Find out what happens. Buy the book.

“I never thought I’d fall in love again, and I don’t know how I’m gonna let you go.”

In Violet Howe’s The Ghost in the Curve, Sloane Reid is the scream queen of movie stardom, but when Hollywood decides that it’s time to move on to a younger actress, Sloane runs off to her aunts remote cabin in the small town of Cedar Creek. Never one to be scared of things that go bump in the night, Sloane is shocked to discover she can see and hear the ghost of a young girl, Chelsea, that was killed in a tragic car accident. Chelsea begs for help in solving the disappearance of her baby brother, and Sloane agrees. With the aid of hottie Detective Rogers, they enter into a mystery that will keep the pages turning!

The Ghost in the Curve is a must read! Don’t let the ghost in the title make you think this is a scary/horror type story, because it’s not! It’s a romantic suspense with a wee touch of paranormal. Honestly, I wish I could give this story more than 5 stars! I absolutely loved it! It has everything I could possibly want in a book…friendship, love, sex, humor, heartache, and a dash of paranormal…it has it all and more! So do us both a favor and run now and one-click this amazing story! You can thank me later!

This was a twist on a story I haven't read before.

I liked Sloane, an actress facing a turning point in her career. I liked how the author made her relatable. Instead of waiting for her to acclimate to normal life, we were able jump right in. Tristan had to grow on me, because of how they met and how he handled his suspicions, but I like how quickly he turned around once he knew what was going on.

The mystery was super interesting and kept me turning the pages. Chelsea was well developed. I wondered how the author was going to "bring her alive" on the page because of the limitations surrounding her situation, but she was amazing. I truly think she was the star of the book, which is only fair considering the title of the book.

I'm happy with how everything wrapped up. Considering how sensitive the situation was, it could have really ended with bad news all around, but there was a definite sense of hope from start to finish, so I'm looking forward to what's next for the entire cast of characters.

Although I wasn't a big fan of Sloane in the beginning, she grows on you. She's an actress who has never really had to do anything for herself. She prefers to stay in hotels instead of the house that she owns. When she meets Tristan, the local deputy, he's responding to the alarm that she accidentally set off trying to get into her aunt's house. She doesn't seem to understand why he would question her given the situation that he found her in.

The longer that Sloane stays in Florida, the more down to earth she becomes. She's not as selfish as she seems in the beginning of the book. She wants to keep her promise to Chelsea and find her missing brother.

This book made me laugh and cry. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

This was an absolutely great read! My second book by Violet Howe but first in this series and I'm hooked totally! It has everything I love in books, suspense, mystery, humor, romance and a bit of paranormal. Action packed, awesome story line, well developed realistic characters, some of them you fall in love instantly but some grow on you. Sloane Reid, an grownup teen scream queen actress at the crossroads career and life -wise both facing her fears and challenges. Tristan, the local deputy battling with his personal past's nightmares and guilt. And, Chelsea, the teenage Ghost! I loved all of three and then more!
I highly recommend this book and now I am so excited to read next book in series which is already waiting for me!

I like it. The characters are interesting, especially the ghost. I enjoyed the developing relationships and the challenges of being a cancelled actress. If you enjoy stories about ghosts with unfinished business, this is a good one.

*I put care into composing, editing, and polishing. I have earned comments versus empty 'like button' clicks, if you please.*

I did not know Violet Howe is a self-published authoress. I snapped up a deal and am glad I tried this mystery. I won’t read any more but “The Ghost In The Curve” impressed me as much as I hoped, with an original plot and emotions befitting a spirit. I savoured an epilogue that updated us on everyone. It is meaningful that a dilemma between families gets readers thinking.

The inadequacy of five stars instead of ten, reduced the stars to three for criticisms that tallied by the novel’s resolution. I loved the characters and originality and came close to giving four stars. Have you read a self-published book that did not feel amateur? The ten or twenty rewrites editors must push authors to polish are always clearly missing, on my radar. Today’s novels in particular need to stop describing cell phone use as much as possible. Fill in stories, not trivial visual commentaries.

For example in 2016, no one is attracted to anyone who treated them coldly. If your genre is ‘mystery’, that should propel the book. Remarks about attraction should not outweigh it. If your heroine is an actress, it is juvenile to keep mentioning her famous franchise. Finally, if your content is ‘paranormal’, don’t waste pages with doubt that people will believe you see spirits. That is annoying and stories are no fun until characters tell those tales! In real life, there is no hesitation to share experiences and people are eager to hear them!

I was invested in a spirit wanting her Dad to know her Brother survived a car accident. I wish Violet had avoided the trope of a heroine stupidly making an excuse to leave her safe haven and running into a criminal. Happily, the final, emotional conversations among characters were lovely and healing.

Warning! This book is addictive.

I couldn't stop reading. The author has a way with words that makes her characters come to life. She pulls you into the story and entangles you in their adventures. Or more like misadventures when it comes to Sloane. She might be a scream queen of the silver screen, but she's also a real person, with needs, wants, an expensive shopping habit, and a newly discovered friend who just happens to be a ghost.

Tristan is the hunky deputy who handcuffs Sloane the first night she arrives in Cedar Creek. Maybe not the best start to a relationship. But, did you catch the hunky guy part?

While Tristan and Sloane might not have had the best "meet cute" they do have an instant attraction to each other that keeps bringing them together. He might think she's hiding something from him, maybe because she is. But how do you tell a guy you have the hots for, that the "something" is a ghost?

Sloane does a lot of growing emotionally, with candid questions from her fifteen-year-old ghostly friend and trying to solve a thirteen-year-old mystery. I was kept guessing, some things I had a strong suspicion and others took me by surprise. The one thing that didn't stop was my need to read more. I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased the next book in the series even before writing this review. I can't wait to see what adventures Sloane will be getting into next.

I really enjoyed this (lightly) paranormal mystery. Sloan is a grown up teen movie star whose career has dried up. When she decides to go to her Aunt's home to figure out her next steps - she discovers she can hear Chelsea - The Ghost in the Curve.
When Sloan tries to figure out what really happened to Chelsea's little brother, she enlists Deputy Tristan to help.
She is a total novice on HOW to figure out what happened and she has to deal with a few unruly fans - which all leads to complications.
Sloan's growth throughout the book is what really grabbed me. She has never had to take care of herself, worry about money or handle a grown up relationship. She has set backs, some points where she wants to give up , but eventually works towards bettering herself . Add to this figuring out what really happened to the brother... gives you a great read.

Love, love, love!!! This book was good. It hit the right balance of romance and mystery. I love Sloane and her celebrity status adds in some curves to this story. Chelsea is great... her teenager side emphasizes what she lost, but she has a good outlook. She made me laugh so often. I loved Tristan and Holden. I hope Holden gets a lady at some point. I need more Tristan and Sloan so of course I’ll be reading The Glow in the Woods next!

This is my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. I love a bit of woowoo with my mystery. And this didn’t disappoint. A friend recommended and I dived in. Took me a wee bit longer than my normal but I blame life not the book.

This was unique, fast and I really enjoyed the characters. While reading I pictured Sloane like Buffy, the whole teen actress playing a slayer. And Chelsea broke my heart a little bit such a young ghost. I did figure out the end but honestly it didn’t take away from the story. I will be reading the next book in the series.

Sloane was an "scream queen" but at 29 the studio says she's past her prime. How do you follow up a career as a ghost slayer? Leaving Calif. and staying at her Aunts rural cabin in Florida to rethink her career. Walking around property she hears a voice and discovers a "ghost" in the lake by the curve in the road. Nobody but her can hear her, she says she's been trapped there since the mva she died in 23 yrs before. I found this a very good story and stayed up too late to find out what happens. Now want to read the next two in series.

I think the best part of this story was Cheslea, a typical 16 year old girl despite being a ghost. I found her sweet, funny and a few times annoying. I wasn't a big fan of Sloane who seemed like the classic cliched hollywood actress. There seemed to be some un-resolved side stories that were also annoying. Overall, it was an easy story to read.

This was book one in this series. There was a lot of needed world building but it resulting in the book not pulling me in as much as I would have liked from the beginning. However, that did not last long. I lost sleep because of this book. I became invested in the characters and cannot wait to read book two.

I want to start off by saying that I really enjoyed this book. But it took a while to get there. See, it is written from 1st person present and I couldn't stand Sloane - at first. So only hearing her side drove me bonkers. But when she decided to not take the easy way out and go back and finishing helping Chelsea, well, I began to like her a bit, and when helping this poor little girl was more inportant than her safety, well, I took back every bad thought about her character. It is worth the beginning to get to the end.

"The Ghost in the Curve" by Violet Howe is book one in her "Cedar Creek Mysteries" series. It was such an amazing start to a series. I absolutely loved this book and the characters in it. Sloane is an actress who is having some not so great luck. She goes to her aunt's cabin in Cedar Creek to get some time to herself and figure out what her next move is. On her first night there, the deputy, Tristan, showed up because she accidentally set off the alarm. He comes off like a jerk, and that right away makes Sloane not like him. He tells her that if she needs to get cell reception, she needs to go near the curve in the road. The next day, she goes out to call her agent to let him know where she is she keeps losing service. This is where she first meets Chelsea. Chelsea is a ghost who has lost her life in a car accident and needs help solving what happened with her little brother, Luke. She is so shocked that Sloane can see and hear her. Sloane goes through a lot to help Chelsea figure out what happened to Luke, and along the way, she has to figure out what she wants to do with her life. She has always played Ghost Slayer, Lucy, but it is time for her to be Sloane. She needs to figure out who she can trust about her being able to see Chelsea and not sound like a lunatic. So she trusts her gut and lets Tristan in on her secret. There are so many good parts to this book, and I had a lot of different emotions while reading it. I will definitely be moving on to the next book and checking out other books by Violet. She has a way with words and makes you keep reading and turning those pages.

When Hollywood actress Sloane Reid gets her movie contract bought out at the age of 29, she doesn’t know what to do. She’s been playing the same character since she was 16. As the star of the Spectral Slayer franchise, you’d think she’d be rolling in money, but poor management when she first signed on, and foolish spending later on has left her broke until she get the check from the studio for buying her out. Contacting her aunt, she gets permission to use her cabin in Florida, tucked away in Marion County, FL, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Sloane has decided to get away to figure out what she’s going to do with her career and life.
Even though she’s played the Spectral Slayer on the big screen, she’s never believed in ghosts, not until her walk to the lake one evening right after she got there. That’s when she encountered the ghost of teenager Chelsea Torrington, who’s been there since the day she lost her life thirteen years prior. Now Sloane has to reconcile her mind to the fact that ghosts are real, there’s one that she can see and speak to across the road from her aunt’s cabin who wants her to solve the mystery of what happened to her baby brother. But that’s not all. She’s still dealing with her Hollywood life. Getting phone calls from her agent and manager, wanting her to come back. Then there’s the break ins. Sloane has made someone very mad there in Cedar Creek, Florida. They’re breaking in and destroying her aunt’s house, making it personal by destroying her personal belongings.
While dealing with all of that, she meets deputy Tristan Rogers, a man who proves to be helpful in both the break-ins at her aunt’s house and Chelsea’s case. It definitely helps that he’s so sinfully delicious. When sparks fly, will they be hot enough to keep Chelsea in Cedar Creek, or will she head back to the bright lights of Hollywood?
I truly loved this story. I devoured it and have already started reading the second one in the series. With great writing, a wonderful cast of characters, and a truly moving plot, the book was so easy to read that I couldn’t stop. I needed to know what happened.

“The Ghost In The Curve” combines the paranormal, romance and a mystery into an exciting adventure that begins when twenty-nine-year old Sloane Reid (aka Lucy Landry, former scream queen in a horror film series) finds herself down-on her-luck, broke and headed to her aunt’s remote cabin on Cedar Lake in Florida.

There she encounters the ghost of Chelsea Torrington a young girl killed in a car accident thirteen years before. Quickly Sloane is swept up in a search for Chelsea’s young brother who survived the accident only to be taken from the shore where he was left while her mother lay dying on the road and she drowned in the lake.

Attracted to handsome deputy Tristan Rogers who almost arrested her after the alarm went off at her aunt’s cabin, Sloane reaches out to him for help after the clues Chelsea gives her seem to go nowhere.

Fast-paced and action-packed intensity and suspense quickly escalate when she’s accosted by over-exuberant fans of her ghost slayer movies; the cabin is broken into; and she has to face Chelsea’s upset father. With twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, all too quickly the plot flows to a surprising ending.

Bringing the plot to life are wonderfully complex and multidimensional characters like hard-headed and highly independent Sloane who grew up in the cloistered world of modelling and film. With her only friends her agent and publicist, she gravitates towards the friendship Chelsea offers, quickly agreeing to find her brother. Tristan Rogers is the trustworthy and honorable deputy who agrees to help her unravel the mystery. Together sparks fly as their attraction deepens into love although both are haunted by the question of “whether or not it will last if she returns to California.”

I thoroughly enjoyed “The Ghost In The Curve” and highly recommend it to those who like a ghostly mystery and I look forward to reading the second book in "The Cedar Creek Mysteries.”

I was gifted this ebook and it entertained me, kept me on edge, and pierced my heart. The detective in me was constantly trying to figure out all the mysteries, the romantic in me really loved the blossoming relationship between the two main characters, and the mother in me was touched in so many soul wrenching ways.

Violet Howe really knows how to grip you, keep you guessing, and make you turn down a dinner invitation and stay up way past bedtime in order to finish the book.

Wonderfully inventive story

Violet Howe blew me away with this story. I don't usually read romances with paranormal but the story line intrigued me. I'm so glad I gave it a chance as I could not put the book down reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. Sloane and Tristan made a wonderful couple. Each of their characters were multi-layered which made the story feel realistic. The care that was used with the paranormal aspects made the story poignant. The twist and turns of the story really kept my attention all the way to the very satisfying HEA. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I got the book at the Space Coast Book Lovers conference in Cocoa Beavh, FL.

I’m pretty sure my friend Annie recommended this book awhile back, and since she’s famous for her good taste in both books and music, I bought it. I could not put this book down and that hasn’t happened in some time. This story combines a well done mystery with supernatural elements (duh, there’s a ghost) along with great action and romance as well. All in all a very well told tale.
Btw, my friend Annie is also a damn fine author herself, so go look up Annie Anderson and read all her books too, you won’t be disappointed.

I had the pleasure of meeting this author, Violet Howe, at a book signing a few weeks ago. After talking to her about her books, I took a chance and bought all four. I started with The Ghost in the Curve and now I can't wait to read the Wedding Planner series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the romance, suspense, and ghostly elements of this book. It's the kind of book that keeps you up reading longer than planned. I highly recommend this book!
