Tất Cả Chỉ Tại Cái Đầu: Cẩm Nang Để Cầm Cương Những Cảm Xúc Bất Kham

Rate this book

I come from Stamford in Lincolnshire. It’s where a lot of TV and films are shot because it hasn’t changed much in 500 years. My childhood was like most people’s – a mixture of lovely and very odd. Lovely because I spent a lot of time with good friends, music and tadpoles. Odd because I spent a lot of time worrying about everything – like war, murderers and poisonous mushrooms (don’t ask). I was a bit weird. Like we all are.

After school I went to Hull University to study English Literature – which I LOVED. At that point the government actually still gave you money to study – so I GOT PAID to READ BOOKS for 3 years. I then worked in radio for 15 years. Firstly as the person who makes the adverts (all those annoying jingles that stay in your head for DAYS – that’s me!) Secondly as a breakfast presenter. I got to interview lots of famous boy bands and once nearly broke Cheryl Cole’s chair on stage. We don’t talk about that. I got in trouble. I’ve always written things but most of them were actually slightly rubbish. Or they were about people and I never wanted them to see it. I don’t think I was any good at writing till I was 35 and that was after a lot of practice.
I have a shed in my back garden I go to. It’s full of brilliant things – like a mini stable and horses, loads of stationery and a giant old railway station clock (slight ‘Dr.Who’ vibe). My first book ‘My Mad, Fat Diary’ was published a few years ago. Hattie is my third. My second is potentially the best book ever written since Shakespeare – but I can’t make it work so at the moment it’s just a bit rubbish. I haven’t given up hope though.

A brilliant and insightful read, discussing a variety of important topics regarding mental illness. Rae Earl has created an incredibly easy read, that is full to the brim with information, without feeling 'info dumpy'. It's funny, educational and refreshingly honest. Written in a casual way, with fun graphics and diagrams, It's All In Your Head felt like a discussion with a friend and I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about their brain, or the brain of those around them, in a way that isn't overwhelming or bogged down with scientific jargon. Rae Earl doesn't go into too much graphic detail but I'd definitely advise being cautious going into this, if you are triggered by certain aspects of discussion on mental illness. However, if you are sensitive to specific topics, the chapter guide at the beginning works brilliantly as a trigger warning guide. So you can pick and choose which chapters to read or not, depending on what's safest for you.

My full review of this book and many others can be found at United by Pop

Earl’s writing was so inclusive of her reader that it felt more like a conversation with my own brain than the musings of another. Her hilarious prose made the voice immediately likeable and knowing she was coming from a place that directly understood suffering made me believe in all she was instructing her readers.

This was a surprise title I received from Hachette Australia. A book I hadn't expected and didn't know anything about, but it sounded interesting. So I decided to check it out and found myself squeezing in a bit here and there, between some of the other books I've read during the last month.

I wanted to take my time, and finished it tonight.

Rae Earl might not have a degree in psychology, but she's been through enough mental health issues and situations to know a thing or two. And that's why she wrote this book, which is a great way of presenting serious issues such as anxiety, OCD, depression, psychosis, and so much more in a way readers of all ages can both understand and relate to.

This might be one person's account of a life full of mental health experiences, but there's a lot of familiar issues mentioned throughout, and even some very helpful coping mechanisms. It's also a book that engages the reader and talks to them on a level that feels more like a conversation. There's no judgement, preaching or pushing an agenda, which is essential when dealing with such delicate and sometimes taboo situations.

There were some things that had me nodding my head because I could totally relate, and others I've never experienced/seen. It's quite an eye-opener.

I thought the addition of an actual mental-health expert was a great idea, because it helps support all the things Rae Earl discusses.

The layout is very cool. The illustrations by Jo Harrison are excellent and totally capture so much of the important stuff. It even helps to break everything down so the information doesn't become overwhelming.

Every single person, for a variety of different reasons, will be affected by a certain degree of mental health issues during their life. Or at least know someone who is. So it's important to realise we're not alone, and that there are ways to make it out from under the dark cloud.

It's All In Your Head is a very cool book that deals with some very serious topics, yet is presented in such a fun, interesting and visual pleasing way that the reader is quickly drawn into a comfortable and safe environment. The familiarity in a lot of the experiences will also keep readers stuck to the page.

I'll be passing this over to my teenage daughter so she can check it out too.

Rae Earl has created a fan in me years ago when my depressed, anxious and mentally unwell self found her books and then, TV series based on her life. Utterly relatable and both hilarious whilst remaining relevant with all things mental health.

This book takes us from the teen years to beyond on all things happening in our brains.

I can relate to so many aspects of the book that Rae talks about. All about our mental health and being aware of it whether it be OCD, depression, suicide, self harm or anxiety and other disorders, we can all take away something from this book. Whether it be tips about treatment options or just not feeling like it only happens to them and/or us.

Rae talks us through her own experiences with humour and a healthy dose of relatable reality.

Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!

A much needed book in today's society. So many of us struggle with mental health and we often don't know where to start looking for help.
This book is a must read. It's funny, accurate and is packed with helpful information in an easy to understand way.
I related to this book so much and I wish it was around when I was a teenager.
I loved that there was information at the back for organisations, books and apps we can use to get more help and information.

I wish this book had been around when I was a teenager!! A must read for any young person who feels out of place and overwhelmed by life - you think it’s just you who feels this way but it really, really isn’t. Even in my mid thirties I found this an insightful and reassuring read. Rae is an inclusive, warm and side-splittingly funny writer, it’s like having a chat with a good friend who gets it and who’s been there.

TW: this is a mental health guide/self help book and I will be mentioning various mental health conditions in basic detail.

From the author of My Mad Fat Teenage Diary comes a mental health guide. This book is perfect for those that don’t have much understanding of mental health conditions, or for teens. It teaches you the basics of some of the most common mental health conditions, some tips on how to deal with them, and guides you with some of life’s most common problems (drugs, sex, relationships, parents etc). Rae’s writing makes you feel like she’s a personal friend- she’s witty, expressive, funny, and caring.
What I enjoyed: The book is split into clear chapters so that you can choose to skip them if you need to- I even skipped one myself. Each chapter explains the condition/problem simply, discusses medical treatments for it, and gives some basic tips on coping skills.
I enjoyed the chapter on anxiety, which I felt explained things well and even gave me, someone who has had mental health problems for over ten years, some tips that I hadn’t heard before.
I enjoyed the chapter about parents at the end, where Rae equates parents to breeds of dogs such as Labradoodles or Alsatians. It discussed how to communicate with them and also briefly talked about parental abuse.

Where it lacked: I felt that the chapters on OCD and eating disorders weren’t well written. The OCD chapter only described two types of OCD, contamination and danger type, and didn’t even explain that there are different types. It also spoke about the intrusive thoughts but I don’t feel like it explained the compulsion part clearly enough. The eating disorder chapter briefly mentioned numbers and even mentioned a meal plan at one point- which is extremely harmful to many people with eating disorders.

Overall, I did enjoy this book, I just feel like it could have done a bit better. It had some guidance from a psychiatrist but I felt like it could have done with more. I read this just after finishing the tv show My Mad Fat Diary and often read the book in the actresses voice!

Rae Earl breaks down the taboo of mental health in this book. She draws from her own life experiences having suffered a nervous breakdown when she was only 16 years old and discusses various mental health issues which she has had first hand experience of, throughout her life.
The author displays a balance of honesty, humour and seriousness throughout the book and does not minimise the seriousness of mental health.
The one point she does elaborate is that it is ok to be different and to look after one's self prior to looking after others using the quote from the airlines safety talk - Put your own oxygen mask on before helping others.
There are many hints and tips and strategies for dealing with the real and scary physical symptoms of anxiety, OCD, depression etc and throughout the book the reader is repeatedly reminded that it is ok not to be ok.
I would recommend this book to those suffering from mental health issues and those who do not. I think all teenagers would benefit from reading this book, whether or not they are struggling with mental health issues or they have friends or associates who are.
I received this book from the author and goodreads in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.

My first experience of Rae Earl's writing and I am very impressed. This is guide is full of extremely useful advice for worriers of all ages. Rae's tone is warm and friendly and there is a distinct lack of that patronising vibe you often get with self help guides.

There is a wealth of tips and strategies for coping in the modern self obsessed world but I will mention my top three.

Put your own oxygen mask on before helping others.

Give yourself a break.

So little really matters. Work out what matters to you and make sure you do that well.

I'm sure I'm not the target audience here and lots of the advice is directed at teens and above but I'm in my 50s and still learning how to navigate this wonderful but sometimes scary world so any help is much appreciated. Also this is ideal for my teenage daughter to help her make sense of an oft chaotic life. Highly recommended.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Rae Earl has an amazing talent for providing you with lots of useful and important information without making it feel overwhelming, in fact the whole book felt like a warm hug from an older sister. I especially loved the illustrations that were scattered throughout the whole book, they were so pretty and broke up all the text wonderfully.

I ordered this book after I was diagnosed with OCD and it was just what I needed to feel like I wasn't alone and that I would be able to get through this!

My favourite parts of the book were the list at the back, especially the Dr. Pop list which now includes some of my fave songs!

Overall, this book is a phenomenal comprehensive book on mental health and how to help not only yourself but others around you. It educates while it reassures and is just so excellently written. I cannot recommend it enough.

I must admit I loved 'It's All In Your Head', it scared me at times when it pointed out things so well-known from my own life. I think it's a great read for teenagers struggling with any mental problems because the author keeps us assured that it's OK not to be OK, that we can handle that. Even tough I'm an adult already I also felt that there's some light, some positive solution for any of our mental struggles. Thank you Rae for being real and for all your support that the book gives its readers. Thank you for not being afraid of sharing all your personal experiences, or thank you for being afaird of sharing them and doing it anyway! Great book! I highly recommend to all!

PS Greetings form Poland Rae! :)

This is an excellent self-help book:

-the humor was funny but it's subjective
-I think I used that right
-it touched a lot of different subjects
-anxiety to self-harm, parents to drugs
-which is actually pretty standard for a teenage self help book
-each chapter felt very brief but I read this in one sitting
-I self diagnosed a few things (like a whole bunch of stress)
-lol I was writing this up two days before high school started
-it's been 14 days of torture
-but the info was very helpful
-and I don't know how many times I wanted to strangle someone who told me to "calm down"
-note the words "wanted to"
-also note the words "strangle someone" 😂😂
-so yeah a really decent book overall

This book is everything each one of us need right now and yet I wonder why isn't famous already.

Highly highly recommended people for you to be able to get through a world that's going crazy and your head that's going mad with all the craziness. I LOVED IT!

Thanks Rae for writing this. Yet can't believe I stumbled upon this book accidentally on a sale recently. Best things happen unexpectedly and coming across your book was the most beautiful coincidence. I love you and I am proud of you for having gone through shit and yet successfully created this to save others from that shit. People like you and Matt Haig are my inspirations.

Also it's worth noting that all my favorite authors including Matt are all British. Fan girling I know, but take it coz you guys deserve it.

After finishing this I immediately tweeted Rae Earl. I couldn't have asked for a better book to tap me on the head and tell me everything is ok. I've always been one of those people who know when asked about mental health they should respond "it's really important to look after yourself". But how to look after yourself and the way Earl decodes various conditions with banter and stories made for enjoyable and enlightening reading.

Although aimed at a teenage audience I totally believe that any age can gain a smile and understanding by this book.

I borrowed this book from my local library, and I am so glad I did.

This book put into words what I feel sometimes. Not all of the book applied to me, but the sections that did were really helpful. There are some tips on dealing with numerous situations, and ways to cope and ask for help.
There are websites, books and apps that aim to help with a variety of different things, and I think I will be trying some of the app out myself!

She describes her mental health in detail a sixteen-year-old suffering Anxiety, OCD, Self-harm and a nervous breakdown.

Fantastic, is all i want to say.

The best thing i realised about life after reading this vook, "It's a life, and it will be OK." No point complicating it on something or anything which may not matter in future, it's not so difficult too make it simple and really beautiful.

Best line, "One off unique in the history of the world is, YOU."

Must read...

I read this because I work with emotionally vulnerable students, and I want to have a few teenage-friendly books in mind to recommend to kids who might welcome a suggestion. I loved this book. It's refreshingly honest, not condescending, has a bit of humor, not overwhelmingly heavy, and accessible to teenagers. I wish I'd read it myself 15 years ago.

I really enjoyed this book. I found it really accessible and easy to read, I finished it almost in one sitting! Although it deals with mental health, this topic was handled really carefully and honestly. Often I find it difficult to read books on that subject area depending on my own mood, but this was so well written and balanced that I would have found it helpful regardless. This is one that I will definitely keep coming back to.
