The Way We #1

The Way We Get By

Rate this book
REDLEY
Growing up wasn’t easy.
Especially on the south side of Chicago with parents who did the bare minimum to keep my sister and me alive.
We learned to never ask for anything, to accept what we had and appreciate life even if our upbringing was rough, and our futures not bright.
But the south side was the place we called home, no matter how hard we had to work to pay our bills and get food on our table at the end of the day.
My sister and my best friend were the ones who kept me going. We motivated each other and made sure none of us gave up after all the hard work and sacrifices we had to make in the past.
They were all I needed to survive.
Or that’s what I believed.

LEDGER
I made it out of the south side and came back to get my family out of their misery.
The same misery I left behind after my brother died.
After eight long years, I had forgotten how much I missed being around to support them, and I was glad I went back.
Offering them jobs at my business would help them pay their bills and live a better life, but little did I know that Red would make things hard for me.
Not because of her behavior, but because of the things she made me feel.
We were family, but there didn’t seem to be any boundaries that stopped us from getting closer.
She pulled me in, and for once in her life, she didn’t have to work hard for it.

NOTE
This is a slow-burn age gap novel with a slight taboo twist.
I advise you to not read TWWGB if you are sensitive when it comes to certain topics such as big age gaps, very detailed sex scenes, alcohol and drug addiction, and foul language.
You have been warned.

This ... book was so fucking boring that I literally didn’t even read the last 50% of it

Wtf was wrong with redley the heroine oh my fucking god girl.. chill out

Jesus she was so over dramatic that I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes at almost every scene

Look the author kept saying how emotional this was going to be but I think she needs to understand making the characters cry every second of every day over every little problem they have doesn’t make it emotional it just makes her fucking annoying

I understand that she was going through some hardships but it didn’t seem to make her stronger or wiser or more mature like it would realistically anyone else

She was just one big cry baby ready to burst into tears.

And Jesus the scene where she went with leger to the party and she was freaking out for no reasons

Like uhgg I don’t fit in with these people and this dress and I’m just sooooo different okay hunny calm down.

And she literal sobbed because someone called her a filthy bitch. Oh no the horror you have to go through because your partner wants you to attend an important work function for him

Gimme a break sweetheart.

And we couldn’t go five minutes without her getting a kiss on the forehead or a hug or I love you like chill with the mushy shit not every one hugs and kisses out of pure love for each other every five minutes and it feels really awkward making them do that

Another thing was dose this author even know what it’s like to live in poverty?

Paycheck to paycheck because the lines of

“Well it was hard on the south side” or “ we made it through on the south side”

Okayyyy west side story gimme a fucking break

And finally can you even call this a forbidden romance with none in it?

Loved the fact that literally every one and the fucking mail man was okay with there relationship. 👌

Where was the angst the tension the taboo feel.

This author has stated that she has had sexual experience that she writes about in the book and I think that’s great you know right. what you know.

But it comes of very unrealistic that she makes it a normal as possible relationship and have every one be okay with it.

And also the sex scenes where boring and weak and kinda stupid in my opinion.

Seven Rue is my favorite new author! She is amazing and I like her books that are similar to this one, taboo, but not insanely taboo.

This book was fabulous. Way more deep than I imagined and the romance was fabulous!

The romance kind of cake about too fast for my taste and it definitely was a surprise to me! Loved it! Such an unique book!

Red was sweet, responsible and a hard worker. She loved and she loved hard.

Ledger was a very interesting character and I like that Rue didn’t do the obvious for this situation!

Overall, wonderful!

It doesn't feel taboo at all . Their relationship feels natural. The conflict is with her mother.

Oh, and for me this is not slow-burn.

There are no misunderstandings and when they get together they stay together.

Here's the deal, for an age gap, taboo romance this is actually a really freaking cute book! Not something I ever thought I would say with a 22 year age gap and it's her step-uncle which wasn't all that weird either.
Redley is one of my all time favourite heroines ever written!!! She has such character and personality as well as a strong will and she knows her own mind. I love her relationship with Kitt so much, I need a Kitt BFF like it's no ones business. These two have each others backs in every situation and that made me love Redley even more. She also has a strong moral compass and while she is struggling with so much she really is an inspiration to do what you believe is right regardless of how it makes others feel.
Ledger I will admit was a great lead and his love for his family and wanting to provide really did make me a happy funny. He is different from most men as he didn't go all alpha over Kitt and Red because he understands that they need each other as they have for all their years of friendship. He didn't stifle Red but allow her too grow and helped her with getting there.
The chemistry between these two was amazing and the sexy times was both a sweet delight and some really good sexy scenes that didn't make you cringe..lol.
The reason it only got 4 stars though is that Red sometimes showed her immature side and it was a little too immature for me. I get that she was only 18 and so grown up in other ways but it just annoyed me a little.
I will defiantly be reading more by Ms Rue in the near future.

This is my honest and unbiased review.

This book was so boring I couldn’t even finish it. I got to 53%, just when the older man and the MC start to get nakey together, and closed out of the book and returned it. He was still in his boxers, but I did not want to read another word of it.

I guess it didn’t help that I got super annoyed when on the 3rd page of the sample, it says that the MC’s boy BFF, Kitt, is 4 years older than the 17 y/o what’s her name. But then on page 347 of the sample, it says he’s only 2 years older than her. I mean, did the author go back and read her book before she published it? Did she have anybody else take a look at it?

Anyway, Red (that’s her name!) talks your ear off telling you over and over and OVER again about how poor her and her family are. The first 45% of the book mainly focuses on that, as well as telling you that her relationship with her mom is super strained. Boy BFF kisses her often and calls her baby when he checks to make sure she’s ok every other page (gag) and they do not have a super weird relationship at all...

Ok, think about when you were in high school...about how you would sit at the lunch table with all your girlfriends. And how you would complain about every little detail going on in you life outside of school. That is what this book is. You get told a bunch of stuff. But it will make you feel nothing.

You will feel nothing but boredom reading this book.

Another great read by Seven!

Definitely my favorite book by Seven thus far! I have read every one of her books and I can honestly say her writing and character development has come so far since her first book! And I cannot wait to read Kitt's story next!

Dang. I really, really wanted to like this book. But the more I read and the further I got, the less I liked it.
So disappointing. But I did appreciate the way the author built intimacy between her characters. And a positive female relationship between the sisters was lovely.
Red falls for her dead father’s stepbrother, Ledger. Except one time Red mentions they shared a father, so that’s not “step”... Also, her best friend Kitt (male) is four years older, but when she’s thinking back on a memory, she mentions he was twelve and she was ten, so...yeah, there are inconsistencies. Also, four years is a large gap at their age, so a 16 yo and a 20 yo living together and sharing a bed, cuddling, etc. is kinda weird for “just friends”...
The drama comes from Red’s addict of a mother, but that whole story line was boring; I wasn’t feeling it and found it rather annoying.
The sex scenes were...not sexy. At all. I actually found them rather cringy. 😖 The “slow burn” resulted in what amounted to A LOT of kissing, and I actually got to the point of wincing and skipping over whenever it was described.
So, yep, it’s a bummer, but this book totally did not work for me.

Beyond Beautiful

Totally exceeded my expectations! I love Seven Rue’s style of writing. I had high expectations for this book and she did not disappoint. There was a high level of tension throughout the book. Instead of using a person to maintain the tension, she used the circumstances of poverty and addiction to do this.

I loved how the characters exuded strength and weren’t wishy washy or conniving.

The Way We Get By is a sizzling hot love story with good people.

The very last sentence is one the best last lines ever. I cannot wait to read Kitt’s story next.

Well hello there , is it enough to just give this book 5 stars? ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Nope absolutely ,nope let’s just give Miss Rue a standing ovation please.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This book it’s absolutely fucking beautiful.
I spend 9 hours reading this book 📚 .
Steamy hot romance ✔️
Slow burn, yes you read right ✔️
Best handsome incredible friend ✔️
Hot yummy older guy ✔️
Great background story ✔️

I think as a reader we always want more books from the same author, we want the authors to do their best some can’t but Miss rue with this one special book took my breath away , with my hand in my heart ❤️ I’ll tell you Seven Rue I admire you!!!

I cried liked a baby 😭, I laughed😂 , I fell in love 🥰 🖤,I got angry 😡 . It was a Rollercoaster of emotions.

And damn I got horny ,( Who won’t ? )🥵🤤
So let’s talk about the Flawless sex scenes, it took half of the book to get them , but they were worth it haha 😆 .

I really hate when I read some sex scenes in some books and I’m like really, it’s that even possible.

But in this one its natural , beautiful and yummy .

I want a ledger in my life please , he is such a great guy, caring selfless person.

Redley it’s and amazing and strong girl , some times I forgot she it’s so young.

Kitt can we talk about him ? Omg 😱 he’s awesomely beautiful hot cute guy , I want more of him.

They didn’t have the best cards in life but through the story we can see how strong and powerful they were, to be so self centered in such a young age.

I think some of us , can really relate whit the story and that make it so damn good.

In conclusion read the book your time will be worth it.

If I could give this book more than five stars than I definitely would because it is one of the best books that I have read this year.

I went into it, with quite high expectations because I have loved every one of Seven Rue's books before and this was definitely no different but it still showed a very different side.

This book tells the story of Redley and Ledger, who are both from the south-side of Chicago. Ledger is the half-brother of Redley's father and is a lot older than her but they have not seen each other in 8 years at the beginning of the novel. The novel does not only tell the wonderful, love story of Redley and Ledger but it also follows Redley's best fried Kitt, and her sister Liz.

I absolutely fell in love with all the characters portrayed in this book, ok maybe not Dorothy and Ellie but I understood their purpose for the story. While the relationship between Redley and Ledger is definitely at the center of the story, it had so many important topics that were discussed in such a fantastic and deep way.

I cannot wait for everything else that Seven Rue will write in the future and I definitely want Kitt's novel next.

Seven has done it again! She’s a pro at writing age-gap taboo romances and this one was no different. The Way We Get By is an emotional story. This is the most emotional one she has written yet. Please understand that even though this is a romance, there are some sensitive subjects and lots of heartbreaking moments. I cried during this book and I can’t even remember the last book that made me cry.

Redley and Ledger are everything. Their story is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to read Kitt’s book! Well done, Seven!

5 Stars!!

As expected another hit by this author! The characters are well developed and the story pulls the reader through without any drags. Lots of steamy scenes, but artfully arranged in the story. I can’t wait for the next book!

My first book by this author and I genuinely really wanted to like it. It started of great and I was into it but eventually after reading up to chapter 20 I felt a decline in interest. It was just... boring. I was underwhelmed.

That said, I do look forward to reading kitts book.

Loved it!

Every book I read by Seven Rue just keeps getting better and better! She’s definitely become one of my favorite authors.

I looooove age-gap romances and this one did NOT disappoint. I love Ledger so much. Redley was a little immature at times but she admitted her faults and stubbornness and I could forgive her for that. The tension at the beginning of the book was sooooo good. I can’t get enough of it and the slow burn just makes it that much better for me. By the time the good stuff happens, I’m burning up.

Books with multiple POVs are my favorite and I’m so glad I got both Redley and Ledger’s feelings. I think it makes me connect with them more. I felt Redley’s emotions and I had tears when she found out about New York.

I was so into this that I finished this in less than a day. I just couldn’t stop reading, I was so into this story. I want more of Redley and Ledger! I’m also excited about Kitt’s story. I loved him too and he deserves to find someone.

I just finished The Way We Get By and was speechless as always. I have never read such an emotional book as this one. Reed is a unique girl who is suffering a lot. However, her mother's character made me very angry all the time. So far, I haven't read about a bigger egoist like she was all the time in the book, but anyway. I just don't have words for Ledger such an attentive man who immediately became my favorite. And don't forget for Kit. Every girl needs one friend like him. So caring, he understood reed so well that I adored him more and more each time I read about him. While I was reading, I cried so much also, and now that it's over so quickly, I will miss everyone. Congratulations and this book has found a place in my heart as well as your others, which I will not forget.

It was a big disappointment. I thought she would be with the two guys but in the end there were barely any hot scenes and Ledger is so dull that I got lazy of all the moments they have together. I don't understand his role in this book and I don't know how Kitt, an infinitely better character, was simply forgotten. Red has a lot more romantic scenes with him and he appears way more than Ledger for us to root for a couple that isn't the two of them together. I find it unrealistic that even after all these years of sleeping together and all the affectionate touches (which are definitely not what friends do) everything remained platonic. No kiss, really??? They never doubted their feelings for each other, really? 🙄 I find it hard to believe and if it happened then they were the first. Kitt is the most self-controlled character I've ever seen, if there's anyone who won't break a promise it's him (they promised never to be more than friends). And even after all these years of friendship, the first opportunity Red has to leave, she goes and leaves him alone because she suddenly found the love of her life?? Sorry but I didn't buy it. Kitt does so much for Red that it makes Red look small. Her and Ledger's relationship seems much more carnal and her first sexual experience than true love. My mind can see her going back and hooking up with Kitt, a cliché even though it won't happen in this story.

I wasn't sure what I was getting into with this read. My heart was hurting for Kitt and Red. They are beautiful together. So adamant though of not crossing the line. Yet, I think Kitt would have been okay with it although he also said he didn't want to lose his BFF. Their living situation though is surreal. And not knowing that he had any relationships outside of the friendship until almost 3/4's of the way through the book made it stranger. Red being only 17 (there was an instance their ages got wonky in the book - 4 and 8 then suddenly 10 and 12 and then 17 and 21) it was a 4 yr difference not 2. What they had together though was unconventional but worked for them. Re-enter Ledger. It didn't make sense for the forbidden aspect for the relationship with the father and other than the age gap. I think Ledger should have been more worried about having an underage escort working for him than some of the other things he worried about. He did at least wait until Red turned 18 before taking the v-card. This was a complex story and I'm not sure it fully worked. I wish Red could have been open to a relationship with Kitt. I feel his fear of being pushed to the side came true at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed this book! The age gap trope is something I’ve recently started reading, and loving! This book is probably one of my favorites I’ve read so far. I really liked the fmc Redley. Her relationship with Kitt is amazing! No jealousy, he’s just protective and her loving best friend. Her relationship with her family is a very strong, with the exception of her drug & alcohol addicted mother.

Ledger…I loved him from the first moment he came back! Yes, eight years is a long time to leave without telling anyone…but he wanted to get his life together. He’s patient, loving, wants to take care of Red, Kitt and the rest of the family. Seriously, I love him. Ledger & Red together is so perfect and very hot! I love that he’s older and settled, wanting to make everyone’s life better. Everyone accepts their love and supports it, and I love it! Absolutely great book!

When Seven said this book going to be emotional, she meant it. The Way We Get By is and emotional story.

This book has totally reached my expectations. I am a huge fan of Seven Rue and have great respect for this person. I still only have good words for her and for her books.

This story really blew me away not only because of the plot but also the characters and the sickening reality it brings with itself.

A beautiful story that I recommend to anyone who’s okay with triggers, like drug abuse and what it can result in.

Seven definitely warned me about what a emotional rollercoaster this book was going to be and I should have taken it seriously because my god....this book wrecked me. I started it at night and 10% in and I knew I was gonna finish it in one go. By the time I finished reading it my eyes were swollen from crying and I was wrecked emotionally. I simply dont have the words to describe how beautiful this story is. Redley and Ledger are definitely my top favourite now. The events went through...tbh EVERYTHING about them touched my heart. I can't tell how proud I am of Seven for writing another masterpiece!

Freaking 100 stars deserved!

Another 5 star read from Seven Rue! I have to say she is my top indie author of 2020. Every book just gets better!!

The emotion Rue brings forth in this book is truly breathtaking. Red is so hardy and resilient and Ledger just helps her become the best version of herself. And, HOT doesn’t begin to describe Seven Rue’s books and this one does not disappoint!

If you haven’t been introduced to Seven Rue’s world, what are you waiting for?! ❤️❤️❤️

What a story!

Wow, what a story. This is more than a romance. It is a story about surviving poverty and dealing with a loved one drug use. It’s about being so young and so strong. It was real, gritty and emotional.

The romance between Redley and Ledger was so sweet. A huge age gap but somehow they just fit together. I loved them.

This fell a little flat for me.
It was okay and such a easy read which I do tend to find Sevens books easy to read.
I think I was expecting a little bit more.. drama I don’t know 😂 I expected a little bit more spice too.

I loved Kitt the most for sure and I hope he gets his book, I’d like to see him find happiness

I love her books and a good slow paced writing style. It is spicy and often forbidden but never rushed into it without any context and that is what I love most. A lot of people like fast paced spicy books without any unnecessary information so this is probably not what you want but I really enjoy it. Anyway I really want to read Kitt's story now.

Harassing taboo authors and getting them banned out of pettiness and jealousy ? Nah, you can burn for that. Readers: DO NOT SUPPORT THIS AUTHOR. She’s been anonymously attacking other taboo authors, getting them banned from Amazon, and ruining their livelihoods! There are FAR better authors out there that aren’t completely psycho obsessed like this one.
