Angeline Fortin returns with the second book in her Something About a Highlander series, featuring a headstrong modern-day Scottish lass and a braw, brooding Highlander who wants nothing more than to make her his...nanny?
Aila Marshall wants nothing to do with Auld Donell and his endless schemes, but even she cannot deny the lure of a mystery three hundred years in the making and a hunt for a lost treasure. When she's sent to the wrong time entirely, Aila knows she's been played. She knows she should return to her own time and give Donell a piece of her mind... One the other hand, what's the rush when an undeniably handsome Scot crosses her path?
Finn Keeley, Lord Rossmore, has no time for a new assistant. Especially one as sassy and bonny as the fiery redhead who'd come to fill the role. He's spent years waiting for the opportunity to avenge the death of his wife and not once has his determination wavered. He cannot let Aila divert him from his purpose now...even though she's the most passionate distraction he's ever known.
As far as Aila Marshall was concerned, a good man was hard to find and love even harder. Fairy tales and white knights were nothing more than a myth. Despite her best friend finding a man in the past to steal her heart, Aila has no intention of following in Brontë's footsteps. She's content to indulge in the smoldering desire she shares with Finn while she solves her mystery. Nothing more. Until more is all Aila desires.

Previous to this, I had mostly avoided time travel romances as someone choosing to leave their own time purely for love wasn’t something that I could get on board with. However, I decided to try again and recently stumbled upon this author. I’m quite glad I did as I really enjoy their style of writing and handling of the time travel issue. While this book was also another enjoyable read by this author, there wasn’t enough substance to hold it together.
1. Too much sex. *cue gasp* I know. I know. Who knew this could be an issue? The problem was the pile of sex scenes in the middle caused the story to have uneven pacing. The story started off fine... good set up, some mystery, lovely characters. Then almost immediately after the hero and heroine meet, there’s nothing to the story except sex. No plot or character development happens for most of the middle of the book. Here’s how I would estimate the book was broken down: first 20%- great set up, middle 50%- sex, final 30%- rushed wrap up. As you can see, way too uneven. I got bored. I think it didn’t help that I came expecting a plot book and got an erotica book instead. Perhaps knowing this in advance, the heavy reliance on sex wouldn’t have seemed so out of place to me as they did have great chemistry and the sex scenes were well written.
2. Aila. I thought she was sarcastic, caring, and honest. All of which I loved. On the other hand, I also felt she was temperamental and got angry over little things too often. Luckily, she didn’t stay angry long, but I felt she used the “it’s not really you I’m angry at but my past” excuse too often. Overall, I liked her as a heroine.
3. Finn. He was heartthrob material but a little too one dimensional to reach his full potential. I wish I had gotten more depth on his personality. I did love that he was a caring father (even if his kids disappear from the storyline in the second half) and his ability to meet the heroine halfway.
4. Plot. I wonder if the author felt they couldn’t flesh out the plot enough to fill a novel and that’s why they added so much sex? Possible. But I think it could have been done if it was fleshed out a bit more. The heroine spends virtually no time investigating the mystery she was sent back to solve, then at the end everything is discovered within a half hour basically. It was anti-climatic as I didn’t have the lead up and suspense to make me care. For about half the book, the plot wasn’t even relevant and then it was over and done with before I could even process most of it.
5. Character backgrounds. This is another area that suffered from the pacing of the book. I got bare minimum details about either of their backgrounds. And this wasn’t until about 70% into the book. It was disappointing as I felt both had a rich background there to explore. The author just needed to go there and they didn’t.
This book had great potential. This author’s writing is engaging and the characters she creates are likable with great chemistry. However, this book dragged with too much focus on sex and not enough focus on plot and character development. Would I reread? I’m not going to lie, I still enjoyed this book even with plot and characters being underdeveloped, so potentially I might reread. Would I recommend? I would recommend this author, but maybe not starting with this book.
I was going through a stressful time and picked this book up for light (but not too light) relief. I think it was the perfect type of book to pick up and it was just what I needed. That does not mean it is not without flaw, because it was by no means a perfect read, but it did what it needed to do.
The author writes these time travel romance stories well. The plot has substance and as with the first book, I don’t think cheap romance covers do these stories justice. The romance is a big part of the story, but it is not all there is to the story. A mystery runs through as well and although it is secondary to the romance, it does add some gravity.
Although the romance in this one was pretty instalove, that is not a plot device I mind too much. I liked both main characters, even if I had to take the attempt at Scottish dialect with a pinch of salt. I did not mind that too much, even if it was a tad annoying.
The first two thirds of the book were pretty strong, but for me the final third of the book with the reveals felt a bit confusing sometimes and unevenly paced. The ending was just ok for me. It was fine, but no more than that.
Overall, I like this time travel romance series and as long as you don’t take them too seriously, they are decently written with a distinct lack of cringe. I am sure I will read on in the series when I am in the mood for a story like this. It works.
I just wish they would make better covers for this series.
Good Novel, bit tricky with the old Scottish language. The story was a bit long for my taste. Though I do love the characters. I enjoy when all the characters are involved. I don't know that I like that Aila choice to stay into the past. What Finn had to compromise? At least T & B made compromises. This is just a personal opinion. The story & romance is still great.
I absolutely loved reading this second story. Following on from the first story, this time Aila goes 300 years back in time to solve a mystery and meets and falls in love with Finn. Wonderful characters and another amazing storyline. Fell in love with the characters and love Auld Donell’s interferences. Audiobook narration was once again amazing, I loved listening along.
Another time traveling escapade in Scotland, still with Donnel as the puppet master. This time, it's Bronté's best friend in for his history-changing and match making. In post Culloden Scotland, she meets Fin, who is a widower with two small children, and she is witness to the building of Inveraray Castle.
The Something About Highlander series reminds me of the amazing tv series Outlander. I haven't read the actual Outlander books but they must me similar to Angeline Fortin's books. It was an enjoyable read.
