വായിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകം അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോൾ വായിച്ചത് അത്രയും മനസ്സിൽ നിന്നും മായ്ച്ചു കളഞ്ഞു ആദ്യം മുതൽ ആദ്യ വായന ഒന്നും കൂടി ആസ്വദിക്കണം എന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ? വല്ല അൽഷിമേ്ഴ്സും പിടിപെട്ടാൽ മാത്രം നടക്കുന്ന, ഒരിക്കലും നടക്കാത്ത ഒരു സ്വപ്നം! പുസ്തകം വായിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത് അതായായിരുന്നു, ആദ്യം മുതൽ ഒന്നുകൂടി വായിക്കണം. റാമിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെ ഒന്നുമറിയാതെ ഒരിക്കൽകൂടി സഞ്ചരിക്കണം, പക്ഷേ അത് നടക്കില്ല! അത്രമേൽ റാമും വിട്രിയും ആനന്ദിയും മല്ലിയും രേഷ്മയും പാട്ടിയും എൻറെ മനസ്സിൽ ഇടം നേടി കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഒരുപാട് പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവരായി മാറിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു.

ഇനി കഥയിലേക്ക് വരാം, ആരാണ് റാം ആരാണ് ആനന്ദി? അതറിയാനുള്ള ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ തന്നെയാണ് ഇൗ പുസ്തകം കയ്യിലെടുത്തത്. ചെന്നൈയിലെ ഫിലിം ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിൽ സിനിമ പഠനത്തിനായി എത്തുന്നവനാണ്‌ റാം. സിനിമ അവൻറെ സ്വപ്നമാണ്. ചെന്നൈ ആളുകളുടെ ജീവിതം പഠിക്കാനും അതൊക്കെ ഒരു കഥയാക്കി എഴുതാനും കൂടിയാണ് അവൻറെ വരവ്. ആനന്ദി ആരാണ്, എന്താണ് എന്ന് അറിയാനുള്ള ആകാംക്ഷ പുസ്തകം തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ മുതൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കാറ്ററിംഗും പൂമാല വിൽപ്പനയും ഫിലിം ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിലെ റിസപ്ഷനിസ്റ്റ് ജോലിയും വേറെ അല്ലറ ചില്ലറ ബിസിനസുമൊഒക്കെയായി എപ്പോഴും കാശുണ്ടാക്കാൻ നടക്കുന്ന ഒരാളായാണ് ആനന്ദിയെ ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കൂടുതൽ ഞാൻ എഴുതുന്നില്ല, വായിച്ചു തന്നെ ആനന്ദിയെ കുറിച്ച് അറിയൂ.

റാം, ആനന്ദി, വെട്രി, രേഷ്മ, പാട്ടി വളരെ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു സൗഹൃദമുണ്ട് അവർക്കിടയിൽ. പിന്നെ മല്ലി, എന്റെ മനസ്സ് ഇപ്പോഴും വിങ്ങുന്നു അവളെ ഓർത്ത്. വല്ലാത്ത നോവുണർത്തുന്ന കഥാപാത്രം. മല്ലി ഒരു വേദനയായി എന്നും മനസ്സിലുണ്ടാവും.
ഇത് അവരുടെ കഥയാണ്. അതോടൊപ്പം തമിഴ്നാടൻ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലൂടെയും ചെന്നൈ നഗരത്തിലൂടെയുമുള്ള ഒരു യാത്രയും.

ഒരു സിനിമാറ്റിക് നോവൽ ആണെന്ന് കഥാകാരൻ തന്നെ അവകാശപ്പെടുന്ന പുസ്തകമാണിത്. അതെ ഒരു സിനിമ കണ്ട പ്രതീതി തന്നെയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ എനിക്കും തോന്നിയത്. ആദ്യ പകുതി കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴേക്കും പുസ്തകം എന്നെ മുൾമുനയിൽ നിർത്തി. ഒട്ടും പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാത്ത ഒരു ക്ലൈമാക്സും! ഈ റിവ്യൂ വായിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാവരും വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇൗ പുസ്തകം തീർച്ചയായും വായിക്കണം. കൂടുതൽ ഒന്നും ഞാൻ എഴുതുന്നില്ല, ഈ പുസ്തകം എഴുതിയ അഖിലിനും പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാൻ എന്നെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ച എല്ലാവർക്കും നന്ദി. പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിലേക്ക് ഇതും കൂടി ഞാൻ ചേർത്ത് വെക്കുന്നു.

Bought this book with lots of expectations since everyone was reading and putting status about it. But turned out to be a very boring read for me.
The author wants to say a lot of things and include a lot of stories in just one small paperback novel.
The dialogues between characters feel very forced and have an artificial quality as if it's a medieval play.

The plot is very cliche and contains all age old twists of every Malayalam movie ever made. The book travels through the experiences of Sreeram who has the personality of a flower vase. He's just there, doing nothing much but simply being a 'nanma maram'.

Then the author brings in two friends who are shown as very active and lively to make up for the lifeless main character, who if left alone would have nothing to contribute to the book except to eat dosas from local eateries and catch trains to and from his college.
When he introduces a transgender who becomes Ram's friend soon, we just know that something bad is going to happen. It felt like an expendable character from the start and it was.
The romance between Ram and Anandhi is lukewarm at its best. Anandhi is shown as a mysterious woman who's always trying to earn money from any odd job she can get. And we readers understand she's hiding something and when she visits Ram's house, his roommate tells her Ram referred to her as 'penpuli' and we immediately solve the mystery in our head and know she's a refugee from Sri Lanka. The author should have been a bit more subtle if he wanted to reveal a plot twist at the end.

We read about the unused Padmini car of paatti and immediately we know there'll be a long drive or car chase with paatti as the driver of the car before the end.

Nothing ever happens between Ram and Anandhi and they don't even have any chemistry throughout the book. Ram is scared of Anandhi since she slaps him and all of a sudden, later in the story they become friendly which doesn't make sense at all.

The emotional aspect of the story is so so artificial. I had a hard time connecting with what the characters were feeling and didn't understand how the relationships like friendship and love developed between them. There's no sharing of any emotions between the characters. They just happen to have a similar work or study or staying place and simply become friends? They felt more like acquaintces.

And then...my biggest issue... The rape scenes depicted in the story. For me, i would have loved to see more emotions and terror in those areas. The author instead writes about rape in a very mechanical manner and induces a sense of wonder and curiosity instead of heart wrenching extreme fear and dread.

And not just for rape...most emotions in the book are lukewarm at best. I would have loved to see how these experiences affected the characters. Instead we're shown an Anandhi who hustles and sleeps peacefully and carries out every task in an organised manner on time. No nightmares except in her retelling her story. Paatti and Reshma spend so long sleeping with Anandhi but Reshma only notices Anandhi going out and then becomes doubtful??? What for.??? They don't talk at all about feelings ever. They just don't. And they're friends without any problem. Anandhi has no PTSD or anything.

Anyway, the author should have tried to take one topic and wrote about it. Or at least made this into a series of novels where one book talks about Malli and problems faced by transgenders. And then another talking about paatti and how women are affected by having no social life outside of her spouse and how it affects her when he is there no more. Next about Anandhi and the Sri Lanka story...so on..

Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings by my review. I know a lot of people out there enjoyed this book and i respect that and I'm happy that a Malayalam book is getting sold so much. But, this book was just not my cup of tea.

One Liner: This is NOT a romance

Aspiring filmmaker Ram (Sriram), a Malyali, arrives in Chennai to join a course at the film institute. There, he meets Anandi, the fierce receptionist who follows instructions to the dot. It is hate at first sight but neither is prepared for it to turn into love. However, the couple has many hurdles to clear before they can find a way to be together.

The story comes in third-person POV.

My Thoughts:

I liked the cheerful characters on the cover and the color scheme. The premise sounded good, so I requested a copy. While the beginning was great, the book soon spiraled into an OTT drama that got darker and darker (yet without any intensity).

So, the good things first:

Given the setting, you should know that this is a desi book for the local audience, especially those who are at least a little familiar with the traits of people from the city (Chennai). Though we are all Indians, each city has molded its people into certain types. A Hyderabadi is different from a Chennaite who is different from a Mumbaikar and so on! The land feels tangible on the pages and shows how much the author loves the city.

There’s a glossary at the end, though the meanings of most words have been provided within the same context. I referred to the glossary only once but it’s helpful for those who need it more.

The first 60-70 pages are entertaining. It has a light vibe with diverse personalities. Though there’s no depth yet, it’s easy to keep them separate.

Making the MMC a softer and mellow character gives the book a different appeal, which I hoped would work in its favor (and, if you want a soft yet impactful desi character with the same name, check out the Telugu movie Godavari (2006 release)).

The FMC seemed terrific and I was curious to know her backstory. Alas!

I appreciate the dry and detached tone when presenting dark scenes. This is not the genre for detailed descriptions of all that abuse, so it’s a relief to stay at a distance from the events.

However, soon, things started to get too cliché and OTT. So, here’s what didn’t work for me:

The Goodreads blurb mentions in capitals that this is the ‘most anticipated romance of 2025’. Based on the cover and premise, I thought this would be a desi love story with some masala. Even the author’s note at the beginning mentions he says he is more of a storyteller and the book has a cinematic feel. I went in hoping for a steady-paced filmy romance with drama and humor (the filmy kind, obviously). It got it in the first few pages but then… bam!

The book is not a romance read. There is NO romance, no chemistry, no connection, and no love story. In the acknowledgments at the end, the author mentioned the book was first titled Chennai Diaries. It should have been retained as it’s a more apt title. I don’t know whose idea it was to market this as romance.

This is a social drama with themes like friendships, found family, violence against the trans community, transphobia, child abuse, rape, murder, mass murders of Tamil Sri Lankans, and more. There’s a sprinkle of some filmy-style scenes of chasing and attacks to add to the ‘thrill’ element.

I won’t talk about the narration as we have been warned already. The flashbacks come in multi-page dialogues (which would be accompanied by visuals on the screen). However, the overall vibe is superficial at best. The book was written to be made into a movie and has been stuffed with issues that needed better treatment. Some of the execution is outright disrespectful.

To summarize, Ram C/o Anandi is a social drama dealing with dark and triggering topics. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any romance here, but good if you do. You may like it better.

സിനിമാറ്റിക് നോവൽ എന്ന വിശേഷണത്തിനോട് നൂറു ശതമാനം നീതി പുലർത്തുന്ന നോവൽ ആണിത്. തലക്കെട്ട് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ റാമും ആനന്ദിയുമാണ് കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ. സിനിമയും ജീവിതവും പഠിക്കാൻ ചെന്നൈയിൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിൽ എത്തുന്ന റാം, അവിടെ വെച്ച് പലരും അവൻ്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് കടന്നു വരുന്നു. റിസപ്ഷനലിസ്റ്റ് ആയ ആനന്ദിയും, ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിലെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളായ വെട്രി-രേഷ്മ സഹോദരങ്ങളും ഇവരുടെയെല്ലാം കേന്ദ്രമായ പാട്ടിയും അടങ്ങുന്നതാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഇവരെക്കൂടാതെ മല്ലിയും പ്രധാന പങ്കുവഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഒരു സിനിമ കാണുന്ന പോലെ നമുക്ക് പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു പോകാൻ കഴിയും. ചെറിയ സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ കടന്നുവരുന്ന നിസ്സാരമായ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ പോലും ഓർമ്മയിൽ തങ്ങി നിൽക്കും. വളരെയധികം സാഹിത്യം ഒന്നും പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല എങ്കിലും നന്മയുള്ള ഹൃദയബന്ധങ്ങൾ കാണാൻ കഴിയും. മല്ലി എന്ന കഥാപാത്രമാണ് നമ്മളെ ഏറെ വേദനിപ്പിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിലും അവൾ ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകം തന്നെയാണ്. അവളെപ്പോലെ പോലെ ഒരുപാട് പേർ ഇന്നീ സമൂഹത്തിൽ വേദനകളും യാതനകളും അവഗണനകളും അനുഭവിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അവരോടുള്ള മനോഭാവം മാറ്റാൻ ഇത് വായിക്കുന്നവരെങ്കിലും ശ്രമിക്കട്ടെ.

ചില സിനിമകൾ കണ്ട് തീരുമ്പോൾ "ഇത് ഇത്ര പെട്ടെന്ന് തീർന്നോ?" എന്നൊരു വിഷമം തോന്നാറുണ്ട്. അത് പോലെ ഒരു അനുഭവം ആയിരുന്നു ഈ വായനയും. ഓരോ പേജ് മറിക്കുമ്പോഴും ഈ കഥ ഒരുക്കലും തീരാതിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എന്നായിരുന്നു ആഗ്രഹം.

സിനിമ പഠിക്കാനാണ് റാം ചെന്നൈ ഇൽ എത്തുന്നത്. അവിടെ സഹപാഠികളും പിന്നീട് ഉറ്റ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും ആയി മാറുന്ന വെട്രിയും സഹോദരി രേഷ്മയും. ആദ്യം ഉടക്കി, പിന്നീട് അവരുമായി ഒത്തിരി കൂട്ടായ് മാറുന്ന ആനന്ദി എന്ന റീസെപ്ഷനിസ്റ്റു, റയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ കണ്ടു പിന്നീട് റാമിന്റെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തായി മാറുന്ന മല്ലി, ഇവരുടെ എല്ലാവരുടെയും പാട്ടി... ഈ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ നമ്മളെ അവരുടെ ലോകത്തേക്ക് കൂട്ടികൊണ്ട് പോകുന്ന. ആ കോളേജും, പാട്ടിയുടെ വീടും, അവിടുത്തെ തേനീച്ചകൂടും, ഗിണ്ടി സ്റ്റേഷനും, തഞ്ചാവുറിലെ ലോഡ്‌ജും, അലിഗ്രാമവും അവിടുത്തെ വീട്ടുകാരും ഒരു സിനിമ കാണുന്നത് പോലെ മനസ്സിൽ തെളിഞ്ഞു നിന്നു.

വായിച്ചു തീർന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ജീവിതത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ആരൊക്കെയോ പെട്ടെന്ന് വിട്ടകണ്ണുപോയ ഒരു തോന്നാൽ.. ഒരു emptiness..!

വായനാശീലം തുടങ്ങാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് recommend ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റിയ പുതിയ ഒരു പുസ്തകം കൂടെ ആയി.. പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട വായനകളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ചേർക്കാൻ ഒന്നുകൂടെ...

ഒരു പാട് പേരും പ്രശസ്തിയും കേട്ടാണ് പൊതുവെ പരിചിതമല്ലാത്ത എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ പുസ്തകം ആയിട്ടു കൂടി ഇത് വായിക്കാൻ മുതിർന്നത്. കാണാതെയും കേൾക്കാതെയും പരിചയിക്കാതെയും അഭിപ്രായവും പറയുന്നത് വശമില്ലാത്തതു കൊണ്ട് കൂടി . ആദ്യപേജുകളിലെ വായനയോടെ തന്നെ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളടക്കത്തെകുറിച്ച്‌ ധാരണ കിട്ടി. 17 വയസിൽ വായിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പോലും പൂർണമായി ആസ്വദിക്കാൻ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നോ എന്ന് സംശയം. ഏതോ ക്രിഞ്ച് (ഇതിന്റെ മലയാള വാക്ക് എന്താണാവോ?) സിനിമ യുടെ തിരക്കഥ വായിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ. അപ്രായോഗികമായ അനവധി രംഗങ്ങൾ അതിനാടകീയതയോടെ ആദ്യന്തം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്രണയവും, പലായനവും, സൗഹ്ര്യദവും ,സ്വവര്ഗാനുരാഗവും എന്നിങ്ങനെ എല്ലാ ചേരുവകളും വേണ്ടതും വേണ്ടാത്തതുമായ ഇടങ്ങളിൽ ചേർത്ത്അ തി വൈകാരികതയുടെ , അതി നാടകീയതയുടെ മേമ്പൊടിയോടെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ,സഹജമായ ഒരു തളിരിടൽ പോലുമില്ലാത്തൊരു ചെടി പോലെ , ഒരു തലത്തേയും ആഴത്തിൽ സ്പർശിക്കാതെ ഉപരിതലത്തിലൂടെ പൊടി പറത്തി പോയൊരു കാറ്റു പോലെ ഒന്ന്. ഇത്തരം പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എന്നെപ്പോലുള്ള വായനക്കാരെ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചല്ല എന്നതാണോ, 'തള്ള വൈബ് ' ആണോ എന്നൊന്നും അറിയില്ല . വായിക്കാൻ പഠിച്ച കാലം മുതൽ പുസ്തകവായന ആരംഭിച്ച അനുഭവത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞ എളിയ അഭിപ്രായം .

Uhmmm.. i have mixed feelings. The book was pretty mid. I expected a lot more. With all the hype going on. Writing, especially dialogues felt dramatic and inorganic. Anandhi’s and Malli’s character arc was good. Patti’s love story also. But rest of the characters, Ram, Vetri and Reshma felt bland. 1st half felt really boring and it got a little better with the 2nd half and that’s all.

അഖിൽ പി ധർമ്മജൻ്റെ മുൻകൃതികളായ മെർക്കുറി ഐലൻ്റ്, ഓജോ ബോർഡ് എന്നിവയെക്കാളൊക്കെ ഒന്നല്ല, പലപടി മുകളിൽ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു നോവലാണ് റാം C/O ആനന്ദി എന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം. മലയാള നോവൽ സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലാത്ത തരം നോവലാണിത്. ഇന്ത്യൻ എഴുത്തുകാരുടെ ചില പ്രശസ്ത ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് നോവലുകൾ വായിക്കുകയും ജിസ് ജോയ്, ജൂഡ് ആൻ്റണി ജോസഫ്, വിനീത് ശ്രീനീവാസൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ചില സംവിധായകരുടെ ഫീൽഗുഡ് സിനിമ കണ്ടിറങ്ങിയതുമായ ഒരു പ്രതീതിയാണ് ഈ നോവലിൻ്റെ വായനയിലുടനീളവും വായിച്ചവസാനിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോഴും എനിക്കുണ്ടായത്.

കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രമായ ആലപ്പുഴക്കാരനായ റാം സിനിമ പഠിക്കാനും നോവലെഴുതാനുമുള്ള അനുഭവങ്ങൾക്കും വേണ്ടി ചെന്നൈ നഗരത്തിലെത്തുന്നതും തുടർന്ന് റാമിന് അവിടെ നേരിടേണ്ടി വരുന്ന അനുഭവങ്ങളുമാണ് നോവലിൻ്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. മുൻകൃതികളിലെന്ന പോലെ ഇതിലും എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ചില സസ്പെൻസുകൾ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തിട്ടുള്ളത് കൊണ്ട് കഥയെക്കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതൽ പറയുന്നില്ല. വെട്രി, രേഷ്മ, ആനന്ദി, പാട്ടി, മല്ലി തുടങ്ങിയ ചില കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ റാമിനെന്ന പോലെ നമുക്കും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവരാവുന്നു. ഒരു സിനിമ കാണുന്ന പ്രതീതിയോടെ വായിച്ചുതീർത്ത ഈ നോവൽ ഒരു സിനിമയായിക്കാണാൻ ഏറെ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകത ഒരു ട്രാൻസ്ജെൻ്റർ കഥാപാത്രവും ഇതിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാനകഥാപാത്രമായി വരുന്നുവെന്നതാണ്. അവരുടെ വീക്ഷണകോണുകളിലൂടെയും സഞ്ചരിക്കാൻ എഴുത്തുകാരന് സാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തമിഴ്നാട്ടിൽ(കോയമ്പത്തൂർ) കുറച്ച് നാൾ താമസിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടും ചെന്നൈ നഗരത്തിൽ പല ആവശ്യങ്ങൾക്കായി പല തവണ പോവേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടും അവിടത്തെ ആളുകളുടെ ജീവിതരീതികൾ പരിചയമുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടും നോവലിലേത് പോലെ ട്രാൻസ്ജെൻഡേർസ് ആയിട്ടുള്ള ആളുകളെ കണ്ടുപരിചയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടും പലയിടങ്ങളിലും എനിക്ക് റിലേറ്റ് ചെയ്യാൻ സാധിച്ചു. പ്രണയവും സൗഹൃദവും യാത്രയും പ്രതികാരവും സിനിമയുമെല്ലാം ചേർന്ന ഒരു ഓൾ ഇൻ ഓൾ പാക്കേജാണ് റാം C/O ആനന്ദി.

കുറച്ചുകാലങ്ങളായി സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയയിലൂടെയുള്ള പ്രശംസാവഹമായ മാർക്കറ്റിങ്ങും ഉള്ളടക്കവും കൊണ്ട് വളരെയധികം ശ്രദ്ധനേടിയൊരു മലയാളനോവലാണ് അഖിൽ പി. ധ��മജൻ (ഇദ്ദേഹം 2018 എന്ന സിനിമയുടെ തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത് ആണെന്ന് ഈയിടെയാണ് ഞാൻ അറിഞ്ഞത്) എഴുതിയ റാം c/o ആനന്ദി. ഒരുപക്ഷെ പലരാലും പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെട്ടും നിർദ്ദേശിക്കപ്പെട്ടും ഒരുപാടുപേർ വായന തുടങ്ങാൻ കാരണമായൊരു പ്രേരകമായും ഈ നോവലിനെ കാണാമെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. അതിനുകാരണം അഖിൽ കഥ പറഞ്ഞ രീതിതന്നെയാണെന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം. ഒരു സിനിമ കാണുന്നതുപോലെ വായിക്കാവുന്നൊരു കഥ. ആ രീതിയിൽ മനസ്സിനെ പാകപ്പെടുത്തിവേണം ഈ നോവൽ കൈയിലെടുക്കാൻ. വായനയോടൊപ്പം മുന്നിലുള്ള കഥയെന്തെന്ന് മുൻകൂട്ടി പ്രവചിക്കാമെന്നതും ഇടക്ക് കഥയുടെ വേഗതയിലുള്ള ഏറ്റക്കുറച്ചിലുകളും ചില ക്ളീഷേ സംഭവങ്ങളും മാറ്റിവെച്ചാൽ, വേണമെങ്കിൽ ഒറ്റയിരുപ്പിൽ രസകരമായി വായിച്ചുതീർക്കാവുന്നൊരു നോവൽ.

അഖിൽ തന്റെ കഥയിലേക്ക് വായനക്കാരനെ വരവേൽക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്. തുടർന്നങ്ങോട്ട് കഥതീരുവോളം നമ്മൾ ചെന്നൈ നഗരത്തിനുള്ളിൽ കഥയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം, കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പം സഹയാത്രികരായി മാറുകയാണ്. ആലപ്പുഴയിൽനിന്നും സിനിമാപഠനത്തിനും, തമിഴ്‌നാട് പശ്ചാത്തലമായൊരു കഥയെഴുതാനും വേണ്ടി ചെന്നൈയിൽ എത്തുന്ന റാം എന്ന ശ്രീറാമിനൊപ്പമാണ് നമ്മൾ കഥയിലുടനീളം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത്. അയ്യപ്പൻതാങ്കൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത്, സുഹൃത്തിന്റെ ചേട്ടൻ ബിനീഷിന്റെ ഫ്‌ളാറ്റിൽ കിരൺ എന്നൊരു റൂംമേറ്റിനൊപ്പം റാം അവന്റെ ചെന്നൈ ജീവിതം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു.

റാം പഠിക്കാനായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത 'ദി ചെന്നൈ അക്കാദമി' എന്ന ഫിലിം ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിൽ വെച്ചാണ് ആദ്യമായി അവൻ ആനന്ദിയെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നത്. നല്ല ചുറുചുറുക്കും, തന്റേടവും, ആരെയും കൂസാത്ത പ്രകൃതവുമുള്ള ആനന്ദി അക്കാദമിയിലെ റിസെപ്ഷനിസ്റ്റാണ്. ഒട്ടും അടുപ്പം തോന്നിക്കാത്തരീതിയിലുള്ള അവളുടെ പെരുമാറ്റവും ക്ലാസ്സിൽ ജോയിൻ ചെയ്യാൻ താമസിച്ചുവന്നതിനു വഴക്കു പറഞ്ഞതും കാരണം റാം ആനന്ദിയെ ഒരു അഹങ്കാരിയായി മാറ്റിനിർത്തി. ആദ്യദിവസം തന്നെ അർദ്ധസഹോദരങ്ങളായ വെട്രിയും രേഷ്‌മയും ക്ലാസ്സിലെ ഒരേയൊരു മലയാളിയായ റാമിന്റെ ഉറ്റസുഹൃത്തുക്കളായിമാറി. അവർ വഴി ആനന്ദിയെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള തന്റെ ആദ്യധാരണ തെറ്റല്ലെന്ന് റാം മനസ്സിലാക്കി. അവർക്കും പലകാരണങ്ങളാൽ ആനന്ദിയോട് ദേഷ്യമായിരുന്നു. ആനന്ദിയെന്ന പൊതുശത്രു അവരെ തമ്മിൽ കൂടുതലടുപ്പിച്ചു.

റാമിന് ക്ലാസ്സിലെത്തണമെങ്കിൽ ആദ്യം അയ്യപ്പൻതാങ്കലിൽനിന്നും ബസ്സ് കയറി ഗിണ്ടി റെയിവേ സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ ഇറങ്ങണം, എന്നിട്ട് ലോക്കൽ ട്രെയിൻ കയറി നുങ്കമ്പാക്കം സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ ഇറങ്ങണം. രണ്ടാം ദിവസം അങ്ങനെ ഗിണ്ടി സ്റ്റേഷനിൽനിന്നും ട്രെയിൻ കയറിയ റാമിനെ ഒരു അറുവാണി, അഥവാ ഹിജഡ, ശല്യപ്പെടുത്തി പോക്കറ്റിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കുറച്ചു പൈസയും വാങ്ങി പോയി. ഗിണ്ടി സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ ഇത്തരം ഒരുപാട് ഹിജഡകളുണ്ടെന്ന് റാം മനസ്സിലാക്കി. അന്നത്തെ ക്‌ളാസ്സ് കഴിഞ്ഞു വെട്രിയും രേഷ്മയും റാമിനെ വെട്രി പേയിങ് ഗസ്റ്റ് ആയി താമസിക്കുന്ന വീട്ടിൽ കൊണ്ടുപോയി. അവിടെ, മുറ്റത്തു കോലവും പൂച്ചെടികളുമൊക്കെയുള്ള മനോഹരമായ ആ രണ്ടുനില വീടിന്റെ ടെറസ്സിൽ വാട്ടർ ടാങ്ക് വൃത്തിയാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടുനിന്നിരുന്ന ആനന്ദിയെക്കണ്ട് അമ്പരന്ന റാം അപ്പോഴാണ് ആ വീട്ടിൽ വെട്രിയെക്കൂടാതെ പേയിങ് ഗസ്റ്റായി ആനന്ദിയും താമസിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന വിവരം മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നത്. തുടർന്ന് ആ വീടിന്റെ ഗൃഹനാഥ, പാട്ടി എന്ന് അവരെല്ലാം സ്നേഹത്തോടെ വിളിക്കുന്ന ഐശ്വര്യമുള്ളൊരു മുത്തശ്ശിയെ റാം പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നു. പാട്ടിയുടെ വീടും പ്രീമിയർ പദ്‌മിനി കാറും അതിനുപിന്നിലെ കഥയുമെല്ലാം കഥയുടെ പ്രധാനഭാഗങ്ങളാവുകയാണ്. ഇതോടൊപ്പം നേരത്തെ നമ്മൾ കണ്ട ട്രാൻസ്‍ജെൻഡർ, മല്ലി, ഒരു ഉപകഥയായി ചേരുന്നു. മല്ലിയും റാമും തമ്മിലുള്ള പരിചയവും ആദ്യം അടിപിടിയിലാണ് തുടങ്ങുന്നതെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് വളരെയധികം ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായൊരു സൗഹൃദം അവർതമ്മിൽ ഉരുത്തിരിയുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ നമ്മൾ ഈ കഥയിലെ പ്രധാനകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെയെല്ലാം പരിചയപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞു - റാം, ആനന്ദി, വെട്രി, രേഷ്മ, പാട്ടി, മല്ലി. ഇവർ ചേർന്നാണ് തുടർന്നുള്ള പ്രധാനകഥയെ മുന്നോട്ടുകൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത്.

ഇനി, കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായ റാമിന്റെയും ആനന്ദിയുടെയും കാര്യത്തിലേക്ക് വരാം. അവരുടെ പരിചയം തുടക്കത്തിൽ കടുത്ത ഉടക്കിലാണ് തുടങ്ങുന്നതെങ്കിലും പോകെപ്പോകെ ആ ഉടക്ക് നല്ലൊരു സൗഹൃദത്തിലേയ്ക്കും പിന്നീടതൊരു സ്വാഭാവികപ്രണയത്തിലേയ്ക്കും വഴിമാറുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ആ പ്രണയം വേണ്ടരീതിയിൽ വായനക്കാരുമായി കണക്ട് ആയോ എന്ന കാര്യം സംശയമാണ്. അവരുടെ പ്രണയം കുറച്ചു ഫോഴ്‌സ്ഡ് ആയി പറഞ്ഞുപോയതുപോലൊരു തോന്നൽ. ചിലപ്പോഴത് എന്റെമാത്രം തോന്നലാവാം. ഇതിനോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട, നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സിനെ ഒരുപാട് കൊളുത്തിവലിക്കുന്നൊരു കഥയാണ് മല്ലിയുടേത്. ഹിജഡകൾ അഥവാ ‘തിരുനങ്കയ്കൾ’ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളും, അവർ നേരിടുന്ന നീതികേടുകളും കുറെയൊക്കെ മല്ലിയിലൂടെ വായനക്കാരിലേക്കെത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. റാമും മല്ലിയും ചേർന്നുവരുന്ന രംഗങ്ങൾ വളരെ നന്നായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

കഥയിലെ അടുത്ത ആകർഷണം ചെന്നൈ തന്നെയാണ്. റാമിനും ആനന്ദിക്കും കൂട്ടുകാർക്കുമൊപ്പം നമ്മൾ കാണുന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ തീർച്ചയായും നേരിൽ കണ്ടതുപോലൊരു അനുഭവം കിട്ടുന്നു. അയ്യപ്പൻതാങ്കൽ, ഗിണ്ടി റെയിൽവേ സ്റ്റേഷൻ, നുങ്കമ്പാക്കം, അമ്മ ഉണവകം, ടി നഗർ, തിരുച്ചി, അല്ലിഗ്രാമം തുടങ്ങി ഒരുപാട് കഥാപശ്ചാത്തലങ്ങൾ. അവിടുത്തെ ജനജീവിതം, സംസ്കാരം, ഭക്ഷണം, രാഷ്ട്രീയം, ഉത്സവങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങി പല പ്രധാനകാര്യങ്ങളും നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട്. കഥ മുന്നോട്ടുപോകുന്തോറും ഈ സ്ഥലങ്ങളെല്ലാം റാമിനെപ്പോലെ നമുക്കും ഏറെ പരിചിതമാവുന്നു.

ഒരു സിനിമയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടുന്ന വേഗതയിലാണ് കഥ പറഞ്ഞുപോവുന്നത്. അതിനാൽ ഞാൻ നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ കഥയിൽ ചില വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചകൾ വേണ്ടിവന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ നാടകീയതയും. റാമും ആനന്ദിയും പാട്ടിയും വെട്രിയും രേഷ്മയും ചേർന്ന് പാട്ടിയുടെ നാടായ അല്ലിഗ്രാമത്തിലെ തിരുവിഴയ്ക്ക് പോകുന്നതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങൾ തനി സിനിമാസ്റ്റൈലിൽ മനസ്സിലേയ്ക്ക് പകർത്താനുള്ളതാണ്. ഒന്നുരണ്ടു പാട്ടും ചെയ്‌സിങ് സീക്വൻസും പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാവുന്ന രംഗങ്ങൾ. അവസാനമെത്തുമ്പോഴേക്കും ആനന്ദിയുടെ കഥയും അതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്ന വിവരണങ്ങളും നന്നായിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആനന്ദിയുടെ കഥ നോവലിനെ വേറൊരു തലത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റുന്നു. എങ്കിലും നമ്മൾ ചില സിനിമകൾ കാണുമ്പോൾ,
‘ഈ സീൻ എന്തിനായിരുന്നു, ഇത് വേണമായിരുന്നോ?’
‘ഈ കാര്യം കുറച്ചു പെട്ടെന്നായിപ്പോയില്ലേ?’
‘ഈ കാര്യം ഇങ്ങനെ മതിയായിരുന്നോ?’
എന്നൊക്കെ തോന്നാറില്ലേ? അതുപോലെ കുറെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ. പിന്നെ ഇതൊരു സിനിമാറ്റിക് നോവലാണെന്ന് ആദ്യമേ പറഞ്ഞതിനാൽ കഥയിലെ നെല്ലും പതിരും വേർതിരിച്ചുനോക്കാതിരിക്കാം. വായന തീർന്നപ്പോൾ ഒരു സമ്മിശ്രപ്രതികരണമാണ് എനിക്കുണ്ടായത്. പക്ഷെ, മൊത്തത്തിൽ വല്ല്യ തടസ്സങ്ങളില്ലാതെ വായിക്കാൻ പറ്റിയതുകാരണം കഥയുടെ നല്ല വശങ്ങൾക്ക് ഭാരം കൂടുന്നു. ഒരുപക്ഷെ ഒട്ടുമിക്കപേരും ഈ പുസ്തകം ഇതിനോടകം വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാവും. കൈയ്യിലിരുന്നിട്ടും വായിക്കാൻ ഇത്രേം വൈകിയത് ഞാനാണ്. എന്നാലും, ഇനിയും വായിക്കാത്തവർക്കായി കഥയിലെ ‘വളവും തിരിവും’ ഒന്നും ഞാനിവിടെ പറയുന്നില്ല. വായന തീരുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ഫീൽ ഗുഡ് സിനിമ കണ്ട ഫീൽ അടിക്കണേൽ ഒരു ട്രെയിൻ പിടിച്ചോളൂ…

"...പാട്ടി അവരുടെ കമ്പനിക്ക് ഇട്ട പേര് കേൾ ക്കണോ. 'ആനന്ദി സ്വിറ്റ്സ്'. പിന്നെ ചെന്നൈ അക്കാദമിയിലെ കോഴ്സ് കഴിഞ്ഞെങ്കിലും ഞാൻ ഇടയ്ക്ക് നമ്മുടെ ആ കോളേജ് റിസപ്ഷനിൽ പോയി അങ്ങനെ നോക്കിനിൽക്കും. എല്ലാ ദിവസവും ഞാൻ നിന്നെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയിരുന്ന ഇടമല്ലേ അത്. അവിടെ പുതിയതായി വന്ന റിസപ്ഷനിലെ പെണ്ണ് എന്തെങ്കിലുമൊക്കെ ചീത്തയും പറയും. എനിക്ക് ഭ്രാന്താണെന്നാണ് അവൾ ധരിച്ചുവച്ചേക്കുന്നത്. അവൾക്ക് അറിയില്ലല്ലോ ഒരു വർഷം മുൻപ് ആ റിസപ്ഷൻ അടക്കി��ാണിരുന്നത് നീയാ യിരുന്നു എന്ന്. പിന്നെ നമ്മുടെ അമ്മ ഉണവകവും അവിടത്തെ അക്കയുമൊക്കെ അങ്ങനെതന്നെയുണ്ട്. എപ്പോൾ നുങ്കമ്പാക്കം സൈഡിലേക്കു പോയാലും നീ കഴിക്കാറുള്ള തൈര് സാധവും വാങ്ങി നീ ഇരിക്കാറുള്ള അതേ സിമന്റ് ബെഞ്ചിൽ പോയിരുന്ന് ഞാൻ അത് കഴിക്കും. അതിനു ശേഷം കോളേജ് ബ്രേക്ക് സമയത്ത് നമ്മൾ നടക്കാറുള്ള നാമ്പാക്കത്തെ ആ തെരുവിലൂടെ തനിച്ച് അലഞ്ഞ്തിരിഞ്ഞ് നടക്കും. എല്ലായിടത്തും നിന്റെ ഓർമ്മകൾ മാത്രമാണ് ആനന്ദീ. പണ്ടത്തെപ്പോലെ എന്തെങ്കിലുമൊക്കെ ബഹളമുണ്ടാക്കി സംസാരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒപ്പം നടക്കാൻ രേഷ്മയും വെട്രിയും നീയും ഇല്ല എന്ന് മാത്രം...."❣️

While the premise had potential, the narrative leans too heavily on familiar tropes and cliched character arcs. If you are looking for a literature marvel, then this is not the one for you. It's a light read, as the author has rightly said, about a man who reaches a new city and how he navigates through his new life afterwards. It's a cinematic story, you would feel deja vu about certain circumstances. Overall it's a one time read.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I appreciate the attention it has received, especially since I bought it last November but only started reading it when the social media buzz peaked. It's quite a captivating cinematic novel, and I didn't experience any reader's block. The storytelling is straightforward without any unnecessary bs. There are a few standout characters like Anandhi, Malli, and the lodge owner, and the romantic subplot was well done --which in my opinion was the best thing about the novel.

The budding friendship in an unexpected situation was somewhat predictable but still relatable, so it didn't bother me much. However, the biggest issue I had was with the artificial and forced dialogues. It felt like the author didn't put enough effort into crafting authentic conversations, especially during crucial friendship moments, which sometimes came off as cringey. Despite these hiccups, the novel is engaging enough to overlook these flaws. But the story lacks a clear focus and the major events seem to happen only towards the end, leading to abrupt genre shifts throughout. Malli's character development was interesting initially but became predictable over time, and some interactions between characters like Ram and Malli felt forced and were utter cringey. Additionally, the main twist and the events that happen thereafter were given minimal importance --felt too forced but I guess it's just that the writer wanted to wrap everything up quickly.

Overall, it could be a decent starting point for those looking to establish a reading routine. But it's just an average read, nothing exceptional.

സിനിമാറ്റിക്ക് നോവലെന്ന ആമുഖത്തോടെയാണ് ഇത് വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയത്.
നന്മ നിറഞ്ഞ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ അതിപ്രസരം നായകന്‍റെ യാത്രകളെ ചെന്നൈ പോലൊരു നഗരത്തില്‍ അനായാസമായി സമന്വയിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഒരു വ്യക്തി ട്രാന്‍സ്ജെന്‍ഡര്‍ ആകുന്നത് ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ നേരിട്ട അബ്യൂസിന്‍റെ ഫലമാണെന്ന് ഇക്കാലത്തും വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന നോവലിസ്റ്റ് ഞെട്ടിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞു.
എങ്കിലും മല്ലിയെന്ന കഥാപാത്രം ഒരു നോവായി മനസ്സില്‍ അവശേഷിക്കും. ട്രാന്‍സുകളുടെ അവസ്ഥയെ അനുതാപത്തോടെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്ത നോവലിസ്റ്റിന്‍റെ നല്ല വശവും കാണാതിരുന്ന് കൂടാ.പൊതുവേ പ്രശ്നക്കാരായി മാത്രം ചിത്രീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ആ സമൂഹത്തിനെ അനുതാപത്തോടെ ഓര്‍ക്കാന്‍ ഈ നോവലിന് ശേഷം വായനക്കാര്‍ക്ക് കഴിയും.

റാം,ആനന്ദി,വെട്രി,രേഷ്മ,പാട്ടി ഇവരാണ് കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍.
ആഖ്യാനശൈലി ഇടക്കിടെ കൈവിട്ടു പോകുന്നുണ്ട്.
റാം പറയുന്ന രീതിയില്‍ നിന്ന് തുടങ്ങി, ചിലയിടത്തെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ അയാള്‍ ചിത്രത്തിലെ കാണില്ല.

ചേസിംഗ് രംഗങ്ങളും , തിരുവിഴൈയും എല്ലാം തമിഴ്- തെലുഗ് മസാല ചിത്രം കാണുന്നത് പോലെ വായിച്ചു പോകാം.

Have never read a cinematic novel before so it kind of felt really odd while I started reading this book. Almost wanted to give up on it, but once you get used to the style of narration, you get used to it and complete it as an easy breezy read.

Giving it a 4 because of the genre it belongs to and the fact that you cannot compare it to any other mainstream literatures. The author makes it clear that this is like reading a movie script and it so is! You can put your favourite movie actors face into the characters and there - you are almost visualising a movie yourself using this script. And way better than how Chethan Bhagat has been writing these days - so definitely a 4!

I believe this style of writing may have its own fanbase which is totally fine because not everyone enjoys hard core literature. Chennai based stories for some reason holds a charm that other cities cannot exude. And this book is no different. I do hope this becomes a movie someday!

A cinematic novel with scenes which will help to make a cinema. If it wasn't for the hype on instagram I wouldn't have finished it fast. Second half has something worth the hype. Dragged too much and only the last part was something worth reading for.

Cinematic novel is not my cup of tea, it seems. Even though we got attached to Ram, Anandhi, Vetri, Reshma and Patty, most of the paragraphs were lacking emotional depths and dealing with it peripherally. This can be made into a romantic movie though. And its an easy read.

As a Malayali, and as a reader, one of my biggest regrets is not having read Malayalam books. Growing up, I didn't get a chance to learn the language or access Malayalam books much. And then later, it seemed too daunting a task to finish an entire novel in Malayalam, though I had somehow taught myself to read the language functionally!

So when I expressed a desire, as well as my inhibition, to read Malayalam books while walking through a book fair, a friend suggested I pick up this one. She believed it would be a good fit for my current need, as, in her words, 'it's simple, straightforward, easy, cinematic and fast-paced'.

And that one line basically describes the book. It maynot be the greatest literature by any stretch if that is what you are looking for, and I guess, serious readers of Malayalam books might find some issues with it too, but for a beginner like me, it really was a good pick to keep me hooked, and to read till the end. It is fun and it definitely feels like one has come out of a high-tension action movie with a lot of twist and turns, lovely friendships, college life, everyday struggles, romance and even police chases thrown in for good measure. There's high emotion and drama and even some world politics, can you believe it!

I came out of it feeling good, mostly because of a sense of pride for having finished a Malayalam novel already this year! 😊

സാമൂഹിക മാധ്യമങ്ങളിൽ ഈ ബുക്കിനെ കുറിച്ച് വാതോരാതെ പറയുകയും എഴുതുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് കണ്ടാണ് ഞാനും വായന തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ അത്ര പ്രശംസനീയമായ വായന അനുഭവമല്ല എനിക്കുണ്ടായത്. ആദ്യം തന്നെ പറയട്ടെ ഒട്ടും മുഷുവിപ്പിക്കാതെയാണ് ഓരോ പേജും കടന്നു പോയത്, അത് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ്റെ വലിയ കഴിവ് തന്നെയാണ്. വാക്കുകളെ ദൃശ്യവൽക്കരിക്കുന്നതിൽ കഥാകൃത്ത് വിജയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഓരോ സന്ദർഭങ്ങളും ഒരു സിനിമയിൽ എന്നത് പോലെ ഒന്നിന് പിറകെ ഒന്നായി കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
പക്ഷെ കേട്ടു മടുത്തൊരു കഥക്ക് എന്തെല്ലാമോ പുതിയ മേൻപൊടി ചേർത്ത് പുതുതാക്കിയതായാണ് ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടത്. പ്രണയം എപ്പോഴും പൈകിളി അല്ലെ എന്ന് പറയുമ���പോളും അതിൽ കാമ്പില്ലാതെ പോയാൽ പൈകിളി വാർത്തമാനങ്ങളും ചേഷ്ടകളും മാത്രം ബാക്കി നിൽക്കും.
ഇനി കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വന്നാൽ, റാം എന്ന പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങളിലൂടെ ആണ് കഥ മുന്നോട്ടു പോകുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ റാമിന് ഈ കഥയിൽ പ്രേത്യേകിച്ച് ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാനില്ല എന്നതാണ് സത്യം. റാം ആരാണെന്നോ അയാളുടെ സ്വഭാവ സവിശേഷത എന്താണെന്നോ ഒരു വായനക്കാരി എന്ന നിലയിൽ എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലായില്ല. റാമിന്റെ നല്ല വശങ്ങൾ മാത്രം വായിച്ചിട്ടാകാം പുള്ളിയെ ഓർക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു പ്രഭാവലയം ചുറ്റുമുണ്ടാകാൻ സാധ്യത ഉണ്ടെന്നു തോന്നുന്നത്. റാം ചിന്തിക്കുന്നതും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നതും നന്മയാണ്. നന്മ മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളൂ! ഇങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള മനുഷ്യർ ഇനിയെങ്കിലും ഈ ഭൂമിയിൽ ഉണ്ടാകട്ടെ!
മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രമായ ആനന്ദിയിലേക്ക് വന്നാൽ, അവിടെയും പ്രേത്യേകിച്ച് ഒന്നും പറയാനില്ല. കാരണം നാളുകളായി കൂടെ ഉ���്ടായിരുന്ന റാമിനോ മറ്റു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായ പാട്ടി, രേഷ്മ, വെട്രി ഇവർക്കൊന്നും തന്നെയോ ആനന്ദിയെ കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതൽ ഒന്നും അറിയില്ല പിന്നെയാണോ വായിക്കുന്ന നമുക്ക്. റാമും ആനന്ദിയും തമ്മിൽ ഒരു പ്രണയം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതായി തന്നെ നോവലിന്റെ അവസാന ഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് ഞാൻ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത്. ഇതിനിടെ ഇവർ ഇരുവരും കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നതല്ലാതെ പ്രണയം എന്ന സങ്കല്പത്തിലേക്കു പോലും എത്തി നോക്കിയതായി തോന്നിയില്ല. മറ്റു കൂട്ടുകാരുമായി ആനന്ദിക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ബന്ധം മാത്രമേ റാമിനോടും കണ്ടിരുന്നുള്ളു. എന്നാൽ നോവലിന്റെ ഒരു മികച്ച ഭാഗം ആനന്ദിയുടെ ഫ്ലാഷ്ബാക്ക് ആയിരുന്നു. അത്രയും ഭാഗം കഥാകൃത് മനസ്സിൽ സ്പർശിക്കും വണ്ണം എഴുതി ചേർത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
മറ്റൊരു കഥാപാത്രമായ മല്ലിയെ കുറിച്ച് കൂടുതൽ എഴുതിയാൽ സ്പോയിലർ ആകുന്നതിനാൽ ഒറ്റ വാക്യത്തിത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞാൽ "തമ്മിൽ ഭേദം തൊമ്മൻ" എന്ന മട്ടിൽ കുറച്ച് ആഴമുള്ള കഥാപാത്രമായിരുന്നു മല്ലി.
ഒരുപാട് പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെയാണ് ലഭ്യതക്കുറവിനിടയിലും ഈ നോവൽ ഞാൻ വാങ്ങുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഒട്ടും തൃപ്തികരമായിരുന്നില്ല ഈ വായന. ഇതിന് ഒരു പ്രധാന കാരണം ഇതിലെ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളിലെ നാടകീയത ആയിരുന്നു. സാഹിത്യ ഭാഷ കലരാതെ സാധാരണക്കാരന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയാണ് നോവലിൽ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഇത്തരം ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയിലും ആഖ്യാന രീതിയിലും നമ്മുടെ മനം കവർന്ന എത്ര എത്ര കഥാകൃത്തുക്കൾ അവരുടെ കൃതികൾ മലയാളത്തിൽ തന്നെയുണ്ട്. ഞാനടക്കം കുറച്ചധികം ആളുകളിൽ വീണ്ടും വായനയുടെ വിത്ത് മുളപ്പിച്ചു എന്നല്ലാതെ മലയാള സാഹിത്യ ശാഖയുടെ ആധുനിക കാല പ്രതിനിധി ആയൊന്നും ഈ നോവലിനെ കാണാൻ കഴിയില്ല.

After reading the book I find myself in a dilemma: did I finish the book or did the book finish me, it’s truly one of a kind. 
The story follows Ram who arrives in Chennai with dreams of being a film making and meets Anandhi who is a receptionist at the same college. Their meeting is anything but ordinary, starting off as enemies to something much deeper. Alongside them are Vetri, Reshma, and Paatti who complete the team.

The characters are the backbone of this book, whether main or secondary. Each one is written so beautifully, especially Anandhi such a resilient, fierce, hardworking, and inspirational character. The relationship between Ram and Anandhi is beautiful to read. However, the character I fell in love with the most is Malli; the bond between Ram & Malli is simply precious.
The writing is simple yet captivating, allowing you to experience the story as if it were happening in real life rather than just reading a book.

I believe this book is a must-read for every book lover. With its unique love story and wonderful characters, it will leave you wanting for more. Reading this book felt like coming home, providing warmth and comfort.

The book began with many promises and hype from the current generation of readers, claiming it even as a masterclass of a work. But honestly, I found it to be a poor shadow of the image it got through promotions. Firstly, the language throughout the storyline felt thin and lacked any attraction. That can be assumed to be an intentional trick adopted by the author to make the story more original and realistic. But the language enables us to connect with the characters in which it miserably failed. Secondly, the characters of Malli and Anandi, when they tell their life stories, feel as though it was forced into the throats of the readers to make the story more socially relevant. Thirdly, the description of the emotional and romantic scenes felt too cringe and disconnected, as if we were watching a film by Vineeth Sreenivasan.
In conclusion, I felt that the novel didn't live up to its expectations even though it has a good cinematic effect and would be a good story for the big screens if processed by a good script writer.

കഥാകാരൻ തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ ഇത് ഒരു സിനിമറ്റിക് നോവൽ ആണ്. വളരെ ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയിൽ ഏതു തരത്തിലുള്ള വായനക്കാരനെയും ആകർഷിക്കത്തക്ക ഒരു ആഖ്യാന രീതി ആണ് അവലമ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. സാഹിത്യപരമായി നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ഉത്തഗസൃഷ്ടി ഒന്നുമില്ലെങ്കിലും ഒറ്റയിരിപ്പിനു വായിച്ചു തീരത്തക്ക വണ്ണം വായനക്കാരനിൽ ഉദ്യേഗം ജനിപ്പിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട് നോവലിന്.

'2018' എന്ന സിനിമയുടെ തിരകഥാകൃത്തിന്റെ രചനയിൽ വന്ന ബുക്ക്‌ എന്ന ഒറ്റ കാരണം കൊണ്ട് വായിക്കാൻ എടുത്തതാണ്.. ആ പ്രതീക്ഷ അങേര് കളഞ്ഞില്ല.. ഒരു നല്ല സിനിമ കണ്ട് തീർന്നൊരു ഫീലിൽ കൊണ്ട് പോയി നിർത്തിയ ഒരു അത്ഭുതം എന്ന് വേണേൽ പറയാം.. കൃത്യമായി എഴുതപ്പെട്ട കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും എല്ലാം ആയി മൊത്തത്തിൽ മനസ്സ് നിറച്ച ഒരു ആവിഷ്കാരം.. So, ഇതുവരെ വായിക്കാത്തവരുണ്ടേൽ മിസ്സ്‌ ആക്കല്ലേ.. ❤️
