I appreciated the combination of hands-on experience and first principles approach that Crabtree brings to demystifying accounting for entrepreneurs. While a bit brashly American - who quotes themselves at the beginning of chapters? - he explains convincingly how tracking return on invested capital, labor efficiency ratios, contribution margin, and different types of capital can help you better project where your business may become financially strained… before you get there! The real-world examples Crabtree help illustrate the insights (and volatility) you can uncover.

Really makes me want to hire an MBA intern to crunch these calculations for me and try to bend them around an infrastructure development business…

Highly recommend to fellow fractional CFOs. Greg has a different lens to look at business numbers. As he said these are things hiding in plain sight. I’m already implementing a lot of this with clients and we are seeing great results.

It’s definitely a book with a lot of numbers and charts so it’s not one I’m necessarily recommending to clients to read themselves, but the concepts are straight forward. Business owners will definitely benefit from a CFO that implements some of this strategy.

A great follow up to Simple Numbers. Greg drills down into value creation and talks in depth about labor and management efficiency ratios.. A great deep dive into business accounting that every entrepreneur should read!

Great book with amazing insights into how to scale and have deep financial insight into business operations. However the terminology assumes you have a strong finance background which I do not. So I'm picking up some books on financial statements and accounting to see if that helps.

It’s like he works at our firm and knows our customers!

This is a must read for business owners and accountants. This is not taught in school. Very useful way to utilize financial data to help business owners make the right decisions for the right reasons.

Not as good as the first one. There was a lot more business speak in this. Seem to definitely focus on financial planning for your business. So took away a few good nuggets
