Hemlock Academy #1

First Addition

Rate this book
I was so close to getting everything I wanted, an internship with my Uncle, an officer with the special-ops team.

If it weren't for a stupid boy that had to go and make me angry, causing me to turn a certain part of his anatomy purple and sparkly, I wouldn't have accidentally revealed to my family what I really was. What I had been hiding.

Now, my father is making me attend the school he headmasters, a stuck-up elite academy that will never take a bodysmith like me seriously.

Fate may have cursed me with six mate spots to fill, but that doesn't mean I need to tell everyone my true purpose for being at the academy.

If I can survive the other petty circulators at the school that think they're queen bee, and hide my own status from everyone, I just might be able to find the six men that I don't really want.

They might think I'm inconsequential, but I'm determined to carve out my own happiness, no matter what it takes.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU READ THE BOOK.

I don’t know how the actual fuck people could recommend First Addition. Aside from every fucking cliché possible being included and the lack of character development, the FMC sexually assaults people for fun.

She is a bodysmith (weird ass name for a succubus). Anyways, she goes in a date to the movies with some guy and shows him how she uses her powers for fun. She targets a group of three people a girl, her brother, and a male friend and makes the two guys who are said to be straight make out. These men are clearly acting under the influence of her magic and would not be in this scenario otherwise. This is not a “funny prank”. And the guy on the date with the FMC has no problem with her actions and commends her. DNF that shit real quick.

I want to disclaim that I am an LGBTQ+ ally. You should never be forced into a sexual situation that you are uncomfortable with. I’d have the same reaction if the author forced a lesbian to kiss a guy.

Disgusting.

Zero stars.

Will not support this author in the future.

I am actively searching for the chemistry, but I can’t seem to find it 🕵️‍♀️ To me, it feels a little forced. This might not be my kind of romance because I enjoy a little bit of banter. I think it lightens the mood and strengthens a connection, but everything felt very surface-level.

Initially, the books seemed really interesting to me, as the FMC was the headmaster's daughter and was sent to this academy/ Uni after her powers were discovered. These powers were enhanced from/through sexual acts. This would later turn out to be a big red flag in the book.

I think it’s very much an insta-love. She was described as extremely attractive, has these sexual powers and seems to attract a lot of attention. The constant compliments do get a little tedious, so much smoke is blown up her ass. I did initially like her boldness and how comfortable she was with herself, but it’s the MMCs and secondary characters that hype her up to a point where she was acting too superior.

Sidenote: One of the MMCs was her professor and he gave me the ick as soon as he said ‘Morning dream girl’. This might just be me, but no …

So in a couple of instances she lets ‘lust leak out’, so she can mentally manipulate people into sexual situations. Eg. She gets 2 men to j**k off in a bathroom. She then feeds off the lust and it tops up her magic.

In another instance, she makes two straight men kiss for her own enjoyment to show off her powers. I read the top review (which I think you should read also because the reviewer goes into a lot more detail), but it makes me uncomfortable. I understand having a different perspective on it, as the FMC isn’t necessarily a bad person and sees it as a prank. However, I don’t love that her whole power was based on manipulating people. It made her very unlikable to me.

She doesn't know these people, their history or how that could affect them. It just all seems very selfish, especially in this situation which happened in an effort to make her date laugh. I don’t know, I sympathize with others' loss of control and loss of choices and the heroine's has a total disregard for it. Especially when it comes to people's sexuality or their relationship with their bodies, it feels like she's pushing over a tower of cards and doesn't even stay to watch it fall. That is just my opinion though, you may have a completely different one.

Even though it’s a fantasy, I think it’s hard not to relate it to reality.

I dnf at 47%, so my review only references moments up to this point. It wasn't for me. But I read half of the book, so it's getting 2 stars.

This was bad. This was really bad (for me)

I actually really thought I’d like this. I liked that some of the boys (just 2 of them) weren’t initially portrayed as the quintessential “bad boy types”. They weren’t described as dropping from heaven; One seemed goofy, that was nice! And I resonated so hard with Gabriel’s “no one should have 6 husbands” (I’d double line that if I could), because more is not merrier, it’s just bloody weird & a nightmare.

But then the story just nose-dived into the abyss. the plot spiraled into some cliche thing that had me second guessing whether these characters were in University and not some primary school.
Shallow characterizations, lots of props and teen-movie worthy moments, juvenile dialogue and that awful rape situation.
Gabriel is, apparently, the hottest-baddest thing since bread 😐. She shook up the whole (ginormous) school; all the boys want her, the queen-bees (I cannot believe I typed that🤦‍♀️) hate her and the fact that she likes to mind fuck people into doing horrible shit is apparently appealing. and she’s obviously special (if the 6 8 mates didn’t give it away).
I double checked, this is a New-ADULT story..😐

And I read the whole thing, I didn’t skim a wink. So forgive me if I’m ranting, it’s still a little fresh in my brain.

I’m eyeballing those ratings now.

I finished it and was not impressed. First of all there was just too many scenarios where the female lead was using her powers to take other’s free will. She would influence them to do things they would never do like kiss the same sex when she knows they are straight. On top of that she was just always trying to be good. Trying too hard to be understanding of those who are on the same boat as her. She was constantly taking the blame for bonding with her mates and constantly need reassurance. And damn she had long ass monologues. I just couldn’t with her. It was also missing the spark. You know that special something that makes you think if you put it down you’ll miss something. Also her relationships with her mates was bland bland bland. It was not engaging or enticing. I finished it cuz I was already deeply invested and it would bug me to put it down and not finish it.

This is a first!

Lol, I found this book by chance and since I don't believe in coincidences since I've been searching for a good book series! It was meant for me to find this good book treasure.

When, I tell ya this heroine had me laughing out loud with her shenanigans I just knew I was going to fall in love with this storyline and book series. My only complaint is I hope we get more characters development with our heroes. I like to know about them especially the Professor. Now, when it comes to this damn Cyrus, character, I just want to slap the hell out of him.. He really needs to get his shit together.. Ugh! It pisses me off that I understand his dilemma but I don't have to like it or him! ( oh damn I jump on a soap box without realizing it.. Lol sorry guys)

Anyway, do yourself a favor and read this book and if you have already then kudos to you😘

Overall Rating:

I really wanted to like this book but.... the characters were just so meh, so 2D (and I can barely describe them). Everything was about her... and not in anyway significant for something other that "oh she is hot. I got have her. Oh we are married forever ? Doesnt matter I love you even though we have gone 1 date together!".
And world-building? Whodat?
Seriously, I would say this book is way too focused on the relationships but guess what?... There was no relationship, you know the ones where people actually want the other for something else than their hawt body? None of that.
And the heroine? I mean this is her way to choose men : "Not sleazy, not too douchy, and says he wants me". Those are the only critera and she will go out with you.

Btw, the all thing about being an independent woman fucking lasted 1 week in the book.

This book UTTERLY lacks world building, people building, relationship building, description building, whatever.
This was bland.
From the first pages I knew this book was going to be mediocre. But somebody said that the Hemlock Academy series was like another version of the Artemis University, and those did getter better and were relatively good (with world building and a plot! A plot!! Something other than "omygawdsheissohot gnnnee lets all get hitched when we barely know each other gneeee"). So I wanted to give it a try.
Waste of my time, money, and discernement.

No fucking clue why people put 4 and a half stars.

Unique and interesting twist on fantasy reverse harem and mates.
Enjoyable story that kept me interested enough to read in one day.
However the formatting is weird and makes it difficult to read due to strange paragraph breaks. It’s seems like almost every sentence is it’s own paragraph. There’s practically no dialogue tags which makes it difficult to know who is talking when there are so many characters involved. Could use another round of editing.
Overall a positive read and I look forward to the second book.

Not for me

If you like your heroines to be perfect in every way and have every guy swoon over her and have everything handed to her in life this book is for you. The worst part is that the fmc is kind of self centered too. I just can't connect or care about her.
Has some issues with editing. Words were missing here and there. Characters also acted like high schoolers much of the time.

It would have gotten a better rating if it weren’t for the many errors and typos within this book.

Word that were capitalized that shouldn’t have been capitalized.
Words that weren’t capitalized that should have been.
Misspelled words.
Misspelled names.
And punctuation errors.

This book should have been better edited.

It was a neat idea, characters were interesting but not much of a plot. I think it will be in the second book...? It also jumped around a bit, the book wasn’t really smooth about transitioning.

So the author really needs to go over this book with a fine tooth comb and fix the errors and typos.

I might read the second book when it comes out, only if it has been edited better than the first.

My rating: 3.5

I was highly entertained by this book. The FMC is strong, has her own mind and opinions and is not shy about her body, liking men, being a bodysmith and other things. But she did not want to be a conduit because conduits are often married of because of political reasons or their power and she wants men around her, who she loves and who love her too. She is in trouble because bodysmiths are not known for committed relationships but she want to have those.

This is book is about fated mates. It’s about finding Gabriellas harem or circuit. It is medium to fast burn. And there is a lot of smexy times going on.

3.5 🌟

Overall I enjoyed the story and will continue on with the series. The first 1/3 of the book was a little rough with the dialogue and structure. I do wish the author would have shared more about the world in the beginning. Still feel like I know next to nothing about everything lol.

3.9? Fmc is “not other girls” and all other female chars bully her, of course. I loved the world and premise but I think there were a lot of character, pacing, plot, and chemistry issues. Pretty similar to vice college for demons

Ridiculously good

Really good start to the series. I like Gabriella. She’s my type of FMC : strong, independent, funny but still able to show vulnerability to those who matter to her.

I enjoyed hearing all the different POVs. It gave me an idea of which guy might join the circuit though some were unexpected.

I thought it would feel rushed but it was okay. The fact Gabby was freaking out over it all made it more believable to me. Now I just need to know more about the big, bad villain who was not really mentioned in this first book.

Good writing, good plot and a bit of a cliffy at the end but book 2 is already out so off I go !

Loved These Characters

I’d probably give this book 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

I overdosed on academy reverse harem books when they first became ‘A Thing’. I don’t read many at all now. I think the only series I’m currently reading is Artemis University and that’s because I’m so invested in the characters I can’t stop. I don’t know why I decided to give this one a chance, but I’m so glad I did.

One of the things I normally hate about Academy books is that they have the usual high school drama of bullying nonsense and to be honest, I’m too old for that sort of thing to have any appeal whatsoever. Happily, this book doesn’t have much of that. It has some, I can’t deny, but not much.

The MFC is Gabriella, or Gabby to her friends. She is a bodysmith which is someone who uses sexual energy to power up her magical resources. Normally bodysmiths are people who can’t cope with monogamous relationships and exchange their addictively drugging sexual exploits for wealth. Gabby doesn’t like that in her mother, who is also a bodysmith, and has tried to avoid that behaviour. It helps that her dad is the headmaster of Hemlock Academy and he is also a sculptor which is someone who has the ability to alter the fabric of things and beings. Gabby has inherited his powers as well. Recently it came to light that in addition to all this she is a Conduit, which is someone, usually a woman, who binds someone to her magically and romantically and this enhances their abilities. She has 6 conduits which hasn’t been seen for hundreds of years so she is keeping it quiet when she attends the academy she doesn’t want to go to.

That’s quite a bit introduction and more information than I’d normally give but I think it explains why Gabby is the way she is really well. Her personality is fantastic. She’s fun, down to earth, feisty and strong. She doesn’t want the power and notoriety that being a Conduit brings, especially one as powerful as she is. She wants men to want her because they like her.

I really like all the characters as much as I like Gabby. They are all interesting and getting to know them is fascinating. I also like the way the plot unfolds. It’s gradual and enthralling, even though not a lot of dramatic stuff happens, I couldn’t stop reading this book. I just really enjoyed spending time with Gabby and her friends/men.

The world the author has created is different from most, though it has shifters and vampires, there are other categories that seem to crop up the more you read, such as the bodysmiths or sculptors. The specialisation is what makes the magic system interesting.

I feel like there is so much more to learn about their magic system and society as the last few chapters reveal quite a lot and leave a lot of questions unanswered. I really want to read the next book straight away so I can find out what the answers to those questions are. I also want to find out who else could be one of Gabby’s mates because the first two are fantastic!

3,5 stars ish

Interesting concept,
I really hope Braxton is not gonna be in her harem or conduit if i should say that, i just loathed that guy for the reason he felt the need to cheat on someone just because of HIS insecurities and then in public lying and telling people things that is not even true about Gabby when they had their little fight in the beginning. Palmer is not either on my good list of guys, wth he just left her after they had their date.... to go directly to another girl even if they just where friends that´s low, you don´t do that. Nah i hope none of em end up with Gabriella aka Gabby (even tho i have a feeling that Palmer will get his second chance ) And that dude Cyrus, rude he running away , i thought he was over 100 years old .
I really liked the people she choose for now in her conduit, Foster the little cutie , Dar the legend(and his twin Cyrus) and the hot teacher Balfour! i hope Grey will join in the next book and ofc some more hotties ;)
OMG that annoying little btch Maddison, she´s loud and annoying and two faced when slut shamming Gab when she is more of a hoe than Gab is herself, bruh. Don´t slut shame people
Gabriella in the beginning of the book made a great impression on me, i liked her confidence and how genuin she was. But i felt her confidence just was a wall or shield to hide her darkest fears and insecurities, the shield kind of fell off and i think it did so when she started to accept her guys in the conduits. She still is confident and kicks ass in class, hell yeaaah

I will start the next book now

Academy .... and not.

This book is one of those that assumes you know what is going on, but fills you in on the details anyway - painfully, and slowly as the pages stack. It’s fast, hot as heck and a touch tropey. We have our typical mean girls, redundant jocks, jealous fools and mates that appear to be the cream of the crop. A bit usual, that, but it’s still woven in an enticing way that makes you want to read more.

FMMMMMMMM (?) first person, multiple POV, cliffhanger ending, PNR Medium burn RH

Life isn’t that accepting

Right so, let’s point out a few good things. There was a real promise of a story. Girl has powers, wants to hide them, forced to go to school- all of that mad it interesting. Hell, it was good, until all of a sudden it became stupid.

People are not that accepting. Everyone pats her on the head and says “we get it, it’s part of who you are.” I couldn’t read anymore of it. There was no angst or anything she had against her. Everything was lined up so perfectly it made me sick.

Thanks, but I’m passing on anything else on this adventure.

This book hit the right spot for me, it had all the things I really enjoy in a RH book. A girl that is "special", fated mates, jealous people, and not finding/bonding to all of her mates right away. This book definitely needs an editor though.

3 Stars for some confusion and not enough chemistry

I have mixed feelings on this book. Will I read the next one? Yes, because I want to know who the rest are, even though I know 2 and maybe 1 other. But the ending is what really got me. To be honest, that ending was the first thing in the book that affected me. I needed more chemistry between her and Balfour. Maybe they just haven’t had enough scenes yet? But I’ve read 100-200 page novellas where I felt more chemistry between the characters. He’s the only one I didn’t really feel it though. And I don’t really like Palmer. I did at first, but after their date it just turned me off on him. Maybe because I didn’t feel the chemistry between them to begin with? I don’t know. I actually feel let down by this book because from the other reviews and ratings I expected it to be better. It’s definitely my least favorite I’ve read of RH and I pretty much read RH 90% of the time. I’m just really hoping the next book is better. Crossing my fingers for a 5 star read on that one!

Oh my

Seriously.

So it ends with a cliffy. No big. Who needs to sleep?

Seriously though this book is well written with a great story line, really great characters with a nice amount of character development and the love interests between the FMC and her men developing at a satisfying pace. Even if some of it happens rather insta-love like it makes a lot of sense in the story line.

I love how she knows her own self and is aware of her flaws and isn't scared of being proud of her strengths.

So I made it to 79% and I’m getting more frustration out of it that actual enjoyment. I personally don’t like the angst of not know whether someone is going to be faithful and accepting of the heroine. There’s so many guys in play, I shouldn’t be surprised there’s so much drama, but I know my limits. I’d actually recommend this to people who are not overly sensitive readers and like rh.

“The roses on my finger fade a little bit at his non-answer and I feel the bond fade a little with it.”

Bloody fucking hell.
I started this book this morning and you could not pay me to put this down; I had to finish it in a sitting because it was THAT GOOD.
I am actually in awe of how amazing this book was.
I laughed my ass off, I screamed with joy, I felt hurt and betrayed, among so many other powerful emotions.

Our main girl Gabby is introduced to us as this incredibly beautiful and alluring girl, who is part bodysmith (think succubus) and part sculptor (can manipulate things/objects into something else).
She’s pulled out of her life and sent to an Academy for supes where her dad is the headmaster.

Gab is also a conduit, meaning she will have multiple mates that are supposed to balance out her power.
However, she wants to keep this on DL at her new school, so as not to draw in the wrong sort of mates.
She has no idea what to expect but it’s clear the minute she walks into the school, everyone wants to either be her, or fuck her.

Okay okay.
I’m going to gush here for a second because I’m such a major fan of slow build harems and this is 1000% hitting the spot for me.
We meet all the guys in her eventual harem in this book, as far as I know; however, we are led to believe that there’s going to be six guys in the harem but the end of the book reveals that there could, in fact, be EIGHT!?!?
*Cries tears of pure joy*
I’m beyond thrilled with this progression and just knowing that there will be some damn adversity in the relationship building department makes this all the more juicy!!
*enter Cyrus and his wannabe mate*

Give me ALL the drama.
I need it like the air in my lungs, fr.

The guys are literal perfection, every single one.
There’s Grey her sexy vampire roommate/bestie who has a secret thing for her but can’t get out of the friendzone.
Then we have Foster, the curly haired redhead shifter with freckles that could have my babies any time any day.
We have Balfour, the oh, so smouldering teacher that gets snatched up by Gab pretty quickly; not gonna lie, the whole ”you’re my wife” thing after knowing each other for a hot second threw me for a loop.
But it’s fine because the slow-build nature of this harem balances out the fast-burn between these two.
It’s a good mix and I’m seriously obsessing.

We also have Palmer, the boy-next-door who loves to party; he sort of blew his shot with Gabby at the moment, so I’m eager to see how he makes his comeback.
Then there is Foxglove, he’s roommates with Foster but we don’t know much about him yet; just that he’s a quiet type and drops flowers on Gabby’s desk for her. He’s a potential for sure.
There’s our senior Pearson, who made Gabby’s acquaintance at his house party and instantly fell for her; he hasn’t made any real moves on her yet though so it will be interesting to watch this one unfold.
Finally, we have our conduit brothers, Cyrus and Dar, who show up at the end of the book and who both have an undeniable bond with Gabby.
She bonds them at first contact due to their conduit nature but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.. especially with Cyrus’ lover to contend with!
THE FUCKING ANGST

The sex scenes were absolutely panty-soaking. Such a good build up and execution, I have absolutely no complaints on that regard.
*Chef’s Kiss*

This was a HELL of a book, I’m seriously contemplating giving up my entire day just to plow through the second one.
Kelsey what have you done to me my friend??

This book has a 3-star review for me. The plot was really good and it made me laugh quite a bit, but the writing didn't hook me up completely. There were quite a bit of mistakes, and many times the characters were just rambling or you couldn't tell who was speaking.

Gabbi's secret of being a conduit is discovered boy her father, and now she has to attend Hemlock Academy to find the 6 men who will become their mate. While the conduits are held in high esteems, Gabbi doesn't want to show off her status, so she goes to school in incognito to try and mingle with the rest of the students, but she's special. She has more conduits marks than the rest of the other conduits, and that means that she has the favour of the Goddess.

An interesting Foundation

Gabriella knows exactly what she wants. Interning with her Uncle at the Special Ops. She has to prove that she more than her sexual powers can do.

The mystery of this world is intricately woven and leaves us wondering what are the real answers. What are the real purpose behind conduits? Why does Gabby have so many conduit marks? Who are the monsters hiding under the proverbial bed?

Once Headmaster Alder - Gabby's dad - finds out about her marks, he enrolls her at his academy. And all the conduits there are chasing after guys and having guys chase them for the coveted spot as their husband, something Gabby doesn't care for.

We get to meet Foster, , Grey, Balfour, Palmer, Pearson, Fox, plus bros Cyrus & Dar Helsing. We also get Braxton, who is a douche, plus some other choice characters. By the end you can guess who is likely to be her bonded, but it'll still be fun to see who it is as things develop. The most drama we get in this book is secrets and love triangles as lives are interrupted with bonds. I'm intrigued to see where the binds will go next.

Anyway I should say that this book is on the slow burn but the story unfolds so nicely that it's just perfect! I am so mad though that's not finished series! It doesn't finish so much on a cliffhanger but definitely you would want to know what happens next!
