“to me, the one basking in infinite glory is you; the one fallen from grace is also you. what matters is you, and not the state of you.”

THIS BOOK WAS SO INSANE???? honestly the best one so far— the writing and storylines just keep getting better and better. i somehow ended up deeply attached to even more characters and relationships (genuinely got way too excited any time mu qing and feng xin showed up) that i’m fearing for my sanity now.

spoilers ahead!!!

WOW. THE BLACK WATER ARC??? one of my absolute favourite arcs so far i loved everything about it; the he xuan reveal was a total MASTERPIECE. the painful irony of shi qingxuan saying, “ming-xiong is someone who doesn’t even know how to lie.” i really should have known by now that things don’t turn out well for best friends in tgcf…. lol…

i loved how this book gave us so many new, lovable faces while also exploring past characters even further. quan yizhen and shi qingxuan have my heart forever. <3

"The three grew up together, after all; how could Xie Lian not be familiar with the way they behaved and spoke? If he couldn’t guess who were under those two skins, then he would’ve lived all those years for nothing.”

well, if you’ve read my tgcf reviews before then you know i don’t shut up about these three. i have to admit, i figured out the fu yao and nan feng reveal back in book two but seeing it all unfold was SO PERFECT. it really was a testament of how much mu qing and feng xin truly love and care about xie lian; their reaction to his ascension after 800 years was to just drop everything, disguise themselves (probably out of fear that he resents them for leaving) and accompany him on multiple occasions so that they can look after him. if i see anyone ever say again that they don’t care about xie lian…. i WILL murder you.

sobbing my eyes out at how mu qing genuinely believes xie lian and feng xin accused him of stealing the red coral pearl… how he never stopped looking for it. going to shake all three of them by the shoulders until some COMMUNICATION FINALLY STARTS TO HAPPEN…. please just go to therapy my mental health can’t take it anymore…

”Only after having met you did I rediscover that it’s such a simple thing to be happy.”

i love them. their moments this book were just SO GOOD??? the scene where shi qingxuan asks hua cheng what the worst suffering is and he answers with, “to watch your beloved be trampled and ridiculed, yet unable to do anything.” my heart was IN PIECES. i love hua cheng because he’s just… insane. completely unhinged and in love. he missed his crush so bad that he made ten thousand statues of him and murals containing all the times they interacted. please get help.

just the entire scene in the cave of ten thousand gods felt like a FEVER DREAM. when feng xin and mu qing uncovered hua cheng’s secret xie lian shrine and their first reaction was to run for their lives….. they were literally screaming, crying, and throwing up while frantically trying to escape and xie lian is just like??? guys it’s not like any of us are normal we all have our hobbies! there’s literally not a single braincell between the three of them i swear.

"Suddenly, Xie Lian knew fear. Fear that Feng Xin would also think this life was too hard, and stop following him.”

adding this quote here because it made me cry and i’m about to start book four… not going to come out of this mentally well, i’m afraid. i put off finishing book three for days out of fear and self preservation but now i actually have to read because of the cliffhanger… putting my therapist on hold as we speak

This was truly so far my favorite book of the series. At first I was skeptical of the novel, what truly makes this such a famous one? Yes Xie Lian maybe one of the most likeable characters I've read in the Danmei world yet I was not sure why the story was so famous. The world building was done magnifieciently but sometimes I was slightly bored but that was only for the first book. By the second book we were given a slight insight to what happened in the past and I too felt excitement as I read it. But by the third book I was completely engrossed in what was happening. I was hooked on its talons and barely wanted to let go. Alas duty calls and I had to let go of the book many time in order to finish work. Sadly for me it would be hard to continue to read the rest too.
Now for the important part, the novel itself. The characters of the story would be main focus. Each charcters had enough space for development which turly worked for its advantage. With the length of the book and each arc being long enough for the characters to have space for development. Even the antagonist does not seem to find any major faults. But what truly is the moral of the story. Are the heavenly beings as good as they say? For some it may not make sense, but as an Asian living in a very god-fearing country, I have seen my fair share of gods and other havenly beings that are worshipped. Thus for me, the moral (intentional or unintentional) stood out.
As there are two more books for this story I'm still highly anticipating how the whole thing would finally break down. Now that we know the history of the relationship between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, we can finally move on, not that no one would have not guessed it. The fourth book as I know once again will revert back to the past life, so it might take some time before we get to the ultimate climax. Till then zai jian!

— He estado enamorado por muchos años y he trabajado duro para poder ganarme a esa persona.

NO, no estoy preparada.

just finished and i feel nothing but shock right now. will get back to y’all in a bit once i recover the shattered pieces of mental well-being.

hold on tight — this is gonna be a long-ass review. but you know those reviews that you write that's just for you? yeah, this is one of those reviews. this is beyond 5 stars if you haven't guessed already.

i'll make it nonspoilery for now, which is this: you know that feeling of knowing that something has irreversibly changed your life but can't properly express the words to describe it because it's just so much bigger than oneself? this book encapsulated that feeling and held it gently as it delivered that feeling straight to my heart. this book was a long one, but a brilliantly crafted, masterfully delivered one that has shook my foundation for reading forever. the plot was fast-paced, clever, and always had that striking balance of letting the reader have some clues as to how things will happen, but completely sweep not just the rug but the entire floor from under them, transporting the reader into an entirely new, exhilarating direction. impossibly enough, i fell deeper in love with xie lian and hua cheng and shi qingxuan, and i got to love some new faces that we got to know better. [SLAPS ADOPTION PAPERS DOWN] like with quan yizhen. i want that chaotic dumbass under my care now.

and now. onto spoilers >:) (but honestly, it'll mainly be hualian) (warning: no dignity ahead)

Hua Cheng laughed. "I promise, you will not find another person who is more sincere than me in this world."
Hearing that familiar response, Xie Lian laughed too.

this book really served me with hualian kisses. i've ascended to the heavenly realm and saw jun wu give me a "what the fuck" face every time before i came down to read more. first kiss was initiated by hua cheng and the aftermath of xie lian's gay panic was fucking hilarious since it was also his first kiss (and then hua cheng carried xie lian in his arms right afterwards because his foot was injured). this book does not let me breathe. and that scene in the ghost city when they went out to eat porridge and all these ghosts were giving them gifts because they were so excited to see hua cheng's guest and xie lian looked up to see hua cheng just sitting there with a hand supporting his cheek, just watching xie lian with a big smile on his face?? and that scene when shi qingxuan tried backing xie lian up by saying "oh he'd never held hands or kissed anybody before" but xie lian thought of hua cheng both of those times and couldn't agree with the wind master?? the amount of times this book has made me scream is unforgiveable. there's so many more scenes i could list, so let me just list some more before continuing on:

- hua cheng being the only one who can eat xie lian's adorably named dishes
- xie lian needing to grab hua cheng's hand every time he breathes
- when asked "what's the worst suffering in the world to you?" and hua cheng replied that "it's to watch with your own eyes your beloved be trampled and ridiculed, yet be unable to do anything" and xie lian suddenly freezing and stop breathing
- hua cheng naturally smiling at only xie lian and not even noticing it
- xie lian not standing the idea that hua cheng die even tho he's technically already dead
- HUA CHENG'S "gege, want to get married?" AND XIE LIAN BEING UPSET AFTERWARDS THAT HUA CHENG SAID IT WAS A JOKE
- xie lian letting out a sigh of relief when he found out that hua cheng's "noble, gracious special someone" was a lie but then hua cheng saying "it wasn't all a lie. i just haven't won that person over yet" and xie lian being in a daze afterwards
- XIE LIAN INITATING THE SECOND KISS AND RUNNING AWAY AFTERWARDS IN A GAY PANIC
- xie lian's fucking dumbass thinking that the person hua cheng hadn't won over yet must not have good taste or that they're taking it for granted since hua cheng is such a catch
- xie lian is a bottom, confirmed.
- THAT SCENE IN THE COFFIN. HOW HUA CHENG IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN "GET IT UP"
- their third kiss quickly becoming into them passionately making out behind the puqi shrine HAHAHA
- hua cheng POUTING when xie lian tried to give him calligraphy lessons
- HUA CHENG AND XIE LIAN MAKING OUT FOR AN ENTIRE NIGHT IN THE QIANDENG TEMPLE ON THE FUCKING ALTAR, WHERE XIE LIAN FINALLY REALIZED HIS FEELINGS FOR HUA CHENG AND COULD NOT BE ABLE TO HIDE THEM ANYMORE
- xie lian missing hua cheng terribly even tho it's only been a few days but hua cheng feeling the same way so he went undercover but got caught by xie lian ("only after having met you did i rediscover that it's such a simple thing to be happy")
- xie lian absolutely loving little hua cheng and squeezing his cheek because he's too cute and braiding his hair and hugging him and placing him on his lap and xie lian being so dejected at the thought that hua cheng won't be little anymore + xie lian wanting a kid that looks like hua cheng so bad
- Forehead Touches
- hua cheng kissing xie lian without any pretenses!!!
- hua cheng letting blood red petals fly down instead of blood rain bc xie lian would get drenched (the IMAGERY in this scene)
- xie lian's heart skipping a beat every time hua cheng does something slightly romantic like holding the umbrella over their heads and hua cheng telling him to come closer
- hua cheng tying the red string of fate on the same finger so they're basically married
- xie lian thinking "to die buried together doesn't sound so bad" when he's wrapped up in hua cheng's arms
- xie lian sleeping on hua cheng's shoulder
- HUA CHENG JUST PUTTING HIS ARM AROUND XIE LIAN'S WAIST EVERY .00001 SECONDS
- xie lian using his body to block the ox from hua cheng, afraid it'll attack
- HUA CHENG'S LAIR???? HOLY SHIT
- those instances where hua cheng voice cracked :) that shit hurt
- CHAPTER 177

A pair of arms had circled around him from behind, and hugged him with force all of a sudden.
Xie Lian had buried his face in his back, and also didn't speak. Though nothing was said, it was enough.
It was a good while before Xie Lian felt the person he was hugging turn around, returning the hold, engulfing him in a tight embrace.
He heard Hua Cheng's staggering voice coming from above. "... Your Highness. You really... will be the death of me."

looking at the list now, that shit was long as fuck, but who's gonna complain??? also, listening to the soundtrack from the donghua while reading was a whole other experience. highly recommend if you wish to spiral more into obsession.

quick note: shi qingxuan better be okay. xie lian deserves more sunshine friends. he's hilarious and one of my favorite characters in this series. i sincerely hope he's okay. i'm really happy this book provides some comedic relief with shi qingxuan's personality and some hilarious interactions between characters. like when mu qing said: "i think even if [hua cheng] was to write 'suspicious' on his face you'd suddenly become illiterate." but for some reason, this is the funniest line in the book for me:

Xie Lian understood but at the same time, didn't.

xie lian is such a good, chaotic, intelligent dumbass. i truly love him. also, i did not know that fu yao and nan feng were actually feng xin and mu qing from the start?? i love how it implies that they've cared from the start.

to wrangle some order into this review, i want to talk about the connection between xie lian and the white-clothed calamity. it really was such great writing that whenever that half-crying, half-smiling mask appeared, i was just as scared as xie lian. i had a suspicion that one of xie lian's paths would be to be the white-clothed calamity, but seeing it hinted at in the end of the book was still a shock to my system. who will rise from the kiln??? i'm anxious, but ready to get some answers.

after finishing this book, i read the next book, White-Clothed Calamity, and finished it within the day, and all i can say is this: it's absolutely heartbreaking and inspiring to see the person xie lian is today. he's truly one of those characters that have been through so much shit, through so much fucking pain, yet still strive to remain compassionate and fair despite all their past circumstances that easily could've influenced them going down the opposite path. i'll talk about it more in my review of the next book, but wow i've never admired a book character as much as xie lian. no wonder hua cheng would do anything for him.

i'll say this time and time again: xie lian is an incredible character, so human and flawed and just keeps trying his best. i'm excited to see how this series ends — see you there.

Xie Lian grinned, but didn't say anything, and didn't rebuke either. He only said, "To have beauty exist in this world is already in itself something to be grateful for."
There was beauty in his heart, and he wasn't afraid of any killjoys. Borrowing the light of those lanterns in the distance, he continued forward.

the revelation at the end absolutely broke my heart and then patched it back again. the 10 years hua cheng had been in the mountain, he's been busy developing his craftsmanship in art. i loved that xie lian readily embraced his emotions even though he had never been even tempted with such romantic feelings previously.

honestly, the whole time, i'm just desperate for hua lian content. that's about it.

books in the series:
1. crimson rain sought flower: ✰✰✰✰
2. the god-pleasing crown prince: ✰✰✰✰
3. no paths are bound: ✰✰✰✰
4. white-clothed calamity: ✰✰✰✰
5. heaven official’s blessing: ✰✰✰✰✰

this series is ruining my life. so many responsibilities ignored. I cannot put into words how obsessed I am. first I watched the anime, then I read the webtoon, now I'm reading the books, there is a 99% likelihood I will re-watch the anime after finishing their series, followed by perhaps rereading the books. idk. my brain it rotted to the core and these characters are a plague upon the last remaining shreds of my sanity it's just so good. I don't think I've ever been this level of obsessed. send help except I'm too far gone.

So, I skipped book 2. Bite me. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.

Book 3 thoughts upon rereading (it's all spoilers):

- First wanna start out with: how in the HELL did I not realize who Fu Yao and Nan Feng were the first time around??! Re-reading it, it's not exactly blatantly obvious, but it lowkey IS. It was RIGHT THERE THE WHOLE TIME.

- We all deserve a San Lang. No, scratch that. None of us deserve a San Lang.

- The demon fetus baby arc is definitely not my fave, but the HuaLian moments are *chef's kiss*

- Absolutely love the calligraphy scene. The running gag of Hua Cheng's bad writing in general is great.

- I truly love how everyone abuses Qi Rong. Man, fuck that guy.

- Shi Qingxuan is probably my favourite character. Loved him from the start.

- How could I forget about the coffin scene. . . ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

- One of my favourite scenes is Xie Lian possessing Shi Qingxuan. The second time especially, where they're both in the same body. It's so funny and cool, and I love the thought of Hua Cheng freaking out over Xie Lian's corpse.

- Another amazing scene: Xie Lian's spirit being dragged back into his body through Hua Cheng's KISS. And then KISSING HIM BACK TO TAKE BACK THE SPIRITUAL ENERGY SO HE CAN SOUL-SHIFT AGAIN. And Hua Cheng just ACCEPTS IT. BUT NOT ONLY THAT, QI RONG SHOWS UP, SEES THEM, SCREAMS INCOMPREHENSIBLY, BUT HUA CHENG'S HAVING NONE OF THAT, IT'S GEGE TIME, AND HE SEALS QI RONG BACK INSIDE THE SHRINE, I'M-

- HOW, just HOW, did I manage to forget about the scene where the opening of Mount Tong'lu calls all the ghosts, and Hua Cheng goes crazy and kisses Xie Lian. Like... what a heart-pounding moment, my friends. And the fact that the author calls it "Xie Lian's enlightenment" lmao...

- Honestly, Quan Yizhen might be one of my fave characters. He's annoying, yes, and a hanful, but he's so cute and possesses such a brutish innocence.

- I also forgot about Hua Cheng disguising himself as Lang Ying. But it's cute when you consider the fact that he felt out-of-sorts with Xie Lian avoiding him (avoiding him because of the previously mentioned Mount Tong'lu summons fervor *wink wink*). And then we end up with the hilarious scene of Xie Lian in the bath while Hua Cheng loses it. Of course, some doubters might think Hua Cheng only showed up in a different form solely to put a damper on his powers...

- Quan Yizhen chasing the step-litter. Just...the madness.

- Bruh, that scene where Xie Lian realizes Hua Cheng is Lang Ying and starts teasing him, it's so subtly funny. Hua Cheng's silent frustration is amazing.

- That ingenious little moment where Xie Lian pretends to be a woman changing in the dressing room. Ah, I can only imagine Hua Cheng's internal screaming.

- E'ming loving Xie Lian and then threatening to stab Pei Ming. Quality content.

- Why is the battle against Pei Ming's sword Ming'guang lowkey the best fight scene? It kinda slaps.

- When literal boulders are falling from the sky and everyone's losing it, but Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are having a nice time under Hua Cheng's umbrella, and then everyone becomes outraged. Good stuff.

- Aww, Xie Lian's reaction when he gets the red string. The boy is smitten.

- The way I wanted to scream when Xie Lian describes someone he trusts implicitly (Hua Cheng), and Hua Cheng obviously instantly gets jealous and tells Xie Lian to not trust people so easily, and Xie Lian thinks he lowkey just got rejected, and AAAAAGGGHHH. The constant misunderstandings between these two. But it's funny because after silently fuming, Hua Cheng then tries to get the real answer out of Xie Lian, pretending like he isn't ready to kill whoever is this person he feels threatened by.

- I'm still never getting over the Cave of Ten Thousand Gods, scene. The drama, the mystery, the misunderstandings, the REVELATIONS. Shy Hua Cheng! Hilariously horrified Feng Xin and Mu Qing! It's all absolutely wonderful.

- Overall, I really needed this re-read to really understand who all the characters were and how all the plots interconnect. It was pretty confusing the first time around.

Current tally of "Xie Lian didn't know whether to laugh or cry":
28.
TWENTY-EIGHT TIMES.
THIS IS ABSURD.

Back to the present, thank goodness. And boy does the action kick off again. This novel contains one of my favourites arcs, the Reverend of Empty Words & Black Water arc. He Xuan is developed so well, I couldn't help rooting for him.

Book 3 is a very long book, compared to some of the others. So much happens here. So much characters development and plot development. It's kind of impossible to review without spoiling, so I won't n.n

I’d say honestly this was 4 stars, there was a lot of parts that dragged, both in the middle and as general plot, but the ending/cliffhanger FUCKED ME UP and also the developing of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian makes me want to explode with emotions, so it’s rounded up to 5

oh… my… god…
book three definitely is my favorite so far; so much hualian content… their relationship is evolving! although it was quite a lengthy and at some times long book, i have really enjoyed it…
can we please talk about hualian’s kisses. ALL OF THE EXCUSES THEY CAME UP WITH JUST TO KISS EACHOTHER!!!1!1!1! i am sick i hate gay people (i love them)
this book was revelations after revelations… he xuan? ling wen? nan feng and fu yao? white no-face? i am quite shocked… agreeably surprised for nf and fy… but i cannot wait to see how everything will turn out in book four and five…

“En, that’s right. Virtuous and beautiful. A real noble and gracious special someone that I’ve liked since I was young. I’ve had that crush for many years, and pursued really hard before I was able to win that person over.”
“Of course! Only after having met you did I rediscover that it’s such a simple thing to be happy, hahaha…”
“No one shall touch what I love except for me.”
“Try touching him, I dare you. Do you think I would let the things I treasure deeply in my heart be so easily touched by you lot?”
“...Your Highness. You really…will be the death of me.”

hualian my beloved… god they are everything to me i have felt so many things throughout the book… who wants to be the hc to my xl?

IMPORTANT: hua cheng spent ten years in mt carving statues of hua lian… drawing murals… perfecting his craftsmanship… thinking of his man  he is so precious

sexiest quotes of book three:

“Crimson Rules the Land; Black Masters the Seas”
“If you’re so concerned with who’s dead, I suggest you go kill yourself.”
“I, DO NOT WORSHIP GODS.

I, AM GOD!”

This volume contains really amazing arcs (the mystery involving 黑旋 is my fav) that had me on the edge of my seat. We are also introduced to more characters and I have to say ALL the characters are fleshed out incredibly well. Honestly, nothing negative to say. The moments that really got my heart thumping and head-spinning were towards the end of the volume as the truth about 花城 was discovered in the cave. I had to read those chapters multiple times because I HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THE REVEAL FOR SO LONG.

Outro ponto incrível foi o desenvolvimento do He Xuan.
No thoughts, head full of:
“...I want to die.” “Dream on.”

Agora precisamos partir pra parte ruim desse livro: o plot daquele roupão.

Enfim, o final desse livro me desconfigurou inteira...

Update (oct 2021): WAAAAHHHHHHHHH!! GOD THE END OF BOOK THREE IS SO INSANE!!! “Every time I meet Your Highness, you always look like this. Makes one ache. Makes one excited.” SCREAMING SOBBING WAILING!!!

Book 4 is going to be INSANE

I had to read this very slowly and book three is insanely long so I won’t be able to add anymore intelligent thoughts other than I love Yin Yu, I felt like I understood quan yizhen a lot better on this reread, feng xin’s “genuinely good people aren’t like you” comment to mu qing shajajajsan, hualian being absolutely insufferable I love them, Shi Qingxuan my love, it was all great. I really loved looking at the difference between sqx and their brother this time around because their dynamic with each other is so…. Interesting? And the different ways they reacted to all that happened in the Black Water Arc😅

Also weirdly enough the info dumping bothered me less this time than my first read.

4.5! Phew okay, a lot happened in this book.

First of all, let me just say I came to love Shi QingXuan in this book and I can’t wait to see him again (hopefully under okay circumstances?) I genuinely started missing him after awhile.

Also I really gotta give MXTX some credit for her humor. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at a book as I did when Ming Yi and Shi Qingxuan tried to eat Xie Lian’s cooking. And it’s not only that, there are a lot of really great funny bits throughout.

I’m still trying so hard to see if I can’t put the pieces of the puzzle together before things are revealed but alas, MXTX likes to keep her cards close, I’m not even sure if it’s possible for me to guess. Hopefully book 4 will shed some light because.... white no-face man. And that ending. Yikes.

My only complaint is just the pacing in a couple places and the info-dumps. You occasionally get taken out of the story in order for some side character story to be told and it’s not awful but they do tend to be a bit slower and I tend to try to skim through them a bit faster. Also the whole Brocade Immortal arc was paced super weird, I had to read some bits twice to make sure I was understanding correctly😅

Also an obligatory line just to say how much I love Xie Lian and I’m so glad him and Hua Cheng are starting to communicate!! Also just that whole, Hua Cheng being jealous of Xie Lian’s “fourth friend” and Xie Lian already being jealous of Hua Cheng’s crush, they really are made for each huh. Disasters, the both of them.

Xie Lian needs to be protected at all costs.
