Unfollow The Flow: Owning Your Life Driven By Passion & Purpose

Rate this book
“I'm tired of being compared. Like I’m supposed to follow what my peers are doing to achieve their kind of success, instead of doing what I really want to do in life.”

***

We often imagine our future to be built upon our goals and dreams, but presently it seems everyone else is ahead of us. One has a dream job as a career, one is about to start a beautiful family, and another is paving a wealthy future for himself.

We start to wonder and find ourselves stuck at an intersection :
Should we follow the path of others to gain success or can we define our own happiness?

Deciding to go against the flow of the norm is scary because we are afraid to choose. What if we choose wrongly? What if we fail and ruin our future?

In this book, Aiman Azlan takes readers on an explorative journey of owning one’s life choices. It might not be a life like the others but in unfollowing the flow, perhaps we will be able to discover a life of meaning – one that is true to us.

3 stars.

Will (or may not) review later.

I need to properly put my thoughts and to understand what I feel about this book.

But yay, 2nd read of 2021!

***

To be completely honest, I love Aiman Azlan. He is a personality who is different from most of the influencers we have here in Malaysia. I like how he is always objective and practical when giving out advices, unlike most toxic positivity that seems like a more popular approach by most local motivators.

But this book, it felt short from my own viewpoint.

Though I have to admit that this is indeed my first time buying and reading his book. Yet, I've been following him since his early years in the industry, so I kind of having high expectations towards the book.

Alright, what are the things that I don't like about this book?

You see, when I received the email newsletter from Iman Publication, I was already anticipating the book that promises the readers to own our life.

Why?

Because it was written during pandemic that broke out in the entire world, and during this chaotic COVID-19 situations here and there.

So, to not be rigid with the plan we already had - or as the title of this book, Unfollow The Flow (UTF) - is the best, possible way for everyone. In fact, 2020 was never expected to act that way, but it did and it affected each and everyone of us.

But, after the high expectations, I felt cheated upon finishing UTF. This is not the book for me. This is not what I expected.

Again, why?

This book lacks depth, that is. Yes, I get it, this is supposed to be a self-guide book, but the whole repetitions of ideas, again and again, throughout the entire book is overwhelming for me.

I don't need to be kept reminded to have purpose, principles and passions in life. I already got the messages from the first few pages of the book.

Also, as I am an avid followers of Aiman in his social medias, the contents of the book feel somehow similar with what he had already shared across his accounts. Only that, in this book, he was able to explain more. Yet, it is not enough for me as I need more from him just explaining his own elaborate ideas.

The whole situation of reading UTF does not help when I keep comparing it to the other book that I was reading at the same time. The reading experience also makes me realize one thing, the books written and published in Malaysia by local authors really, I mean REALLY, need in-depth explorations, discussions, case studies and facts, rather than the author 100% own words and ideas itself.

Or simply put, our authors are lacking research when writing their book. They only write what is inside their mind, and honestly, if we allow that, then anyone who is anyone can write and publish a book. So, where is the quality then?

(The only author that I can think of who did his research thoroughly is Faisal Tehrani. Call me biased, but he is a great author and thinker!)

One more thing, and I really need to write it here, not everyone can pursue their dreams and passions. In fact, to be able to purchase or even read this book is even a privilege in itself. I have to say, Aiman seems idealistic when he said, "Everyone can pursue their passion."

Nope, Aiman. The world does not work that way, unfortunately.

However, there are some good points that I agree as follows:

1) I agree that we need to have purpose and principles when it comes to planning our life. As a Muslim, our main purpose is always to serve Allah SWT and please Him.

2) Our BIG WHY should always be to serve and please Allah SWT. Any other BIG WHY is just a small why. Why? I like it when Aiman explained that everything in this world, even our parents, siblings, spouses and children, will perish. They are just beings or creations. They are small compared to The Creator, to Rabb. So, our BIG WHY will always have to be Allah SWT. Period.

3) I love it how Aiman keeps on reminding us to direct and redirect our intentions towards Allah SWT. Whatever you do, you do it for Allah SWT alone.

I hope my review shall not stop anyone who wish to read UTF. It is still a good book, though.

In a nutshell, I recommend this book to students who are still in their school or colleges. But if you are a grown up, or working adult, there are better books out there.

Lastly, happy reading!

FULL REVIEW: Unfollow The Flow By Aiman Azlan
READING VLOG| Unfollow The Flow

To be honest, I dived in expecting more. First half, more like reminders. Yang menariknya, buku ni buat saya rasa kena refer hampir setiap hari untuk ingatkan balik, saya sedang berada di path mana & ke mana saya betul2 nak bawak life ni.

This book make way for me to really, finally sit down and think.
Bagi saya, the youths who are looking for their passion will find this book very helpful. Untuk yang dah jumpa passion, it works as reminder.

Its motivating. The usage of simple english, made things better. If you guys are Robin Sharma's kind of books reader, maybe this would feel simple for you. But I read Robin's book before and I think, this is really motivating and knowing his own passion and time management through this book is really inspiring.

what a great way to end my 2020! wohoo!

I like the general advice in the book. It's generally good. I would recommend this book to those who are just beginning their journey of finding their calling in life.

Generally speaking, the book is good. Just, not great. I could relate to what Aiman is conveying in the book, but many of the stuff I've already heard or known. And many of it is his personal experience, opinions, or theory.

I really hope that there would be some real-life story or research to back what Aiman wants to make his reader understand. Because as human, a real-life situation is always the best way for us to reflect on our own life, be inspired and take action.

Hope that Aiman would continue making stuff that inspire the youth.

Why in the first place I bought this book?
I was feeling hopeless, worthless and passionless. I was questioning my worth on medical field, on art field and reading field. For me: I am screwed either way. Hence I know Aiman Azlan who is a youth mentor that encouraging mortals to own their lives. Then I know I could learn something from his book. It is to unfollow the flow and be a driver of my life. Instead of gambling by following the flow, I choose to plan. It's not denying that Allah is the best planner but the plan is an effort that should be made to let us be someone, someone who is faithful of herself.

Our purpose is like our destination, could be our legacy we left behind in this world or what we bring to the Afterworld. Then we have navigation which is our principles. Obviously different people have different principles and those what make us unique. The principles keep us navigated towards our destiny. Lastly, our passion is like fuel or energy we need to go further.

However, it is not who arrive first is better. Life isn't a race. Don't compare our chapters with 'their' chapters. If we really understand this concept, we won't give up. Failure doesn't exist. It's just a way to know things don't work for us. Those failure is a fruit to our success. If there's no scarcity, there's no value for our success right?

The passion we have doesn't need to be our career. It could be our hobby. Hence, do enjoy other things as well wholeheartedly.

Relaxed reading. Very recommended for youngsters!

As the author said on preface, this book has only serves as a guide rather than telling you step by step. I appreciate the author gave his personal example to explain things further.
I’m not expecting this book to give me an in depth guide, but i find the contents are too simple (?), but this is just my personal preference.

I kinda love the concept that has been brought by author in this book which is about passion, owning your life and life is not a race.

Sometimes, we tend to follow the flow. Follow the path that other people has set as it is also meant the same for us that we forgot, our life is different from one another. And this life is a journey that we must face on our own, it is really different from everyone else.

Some people might get their degree at the age of 21, some people might get their first degree at the age of 40, some people might get married at the age of 24, some people might get married at the age of 35 and etc.

We need to normalise this unfollow the flow kind of things. Be on our own pace. Take our own time and discover this very journey.

Besides, author also talk about passion. Most likely author brought a questions that i need to solve and explore on my own. Up until now (when i already finished this book), i'm still figuring things out, what is my ultimate passion in this life. The thing is, passion is like a puzzle that i need solve and build.

There is another part that i love which is when we set this certain goals in a specific time and we did not achieve that goals in that very specific time, it does not mean that we are failed. It is not, it just as time goes by, we are facing with another priorities or some difficulties. So, do not think that we failed and we need to stop chasing our goals. If you still have that passion, please pursue your dreams and goals but if you feels like want to change it, yes make another one.

Please do not stop because this life ia not a race.

I just need one-half days to finish reading the book. Overall, the content is very light and too general. It's more suitable for readers who just started reading self-development books. But the author already mentioned in his book why he wrote that way. Recommended for young teens, but not for adult readers.

Title: Unfollow The Flow
Author: Aiman Azaln
Publisher: Iman Publication

“Your life is not a race, it’s a journey”. Its what can I conclude after finishing reading this book. This self-help book can help you to steer your life to become better, for you to live life to the fullest. Disclaimer, this book is not a recipe book which can teach you in 1 2 3 how to live your life perfectly. But its more, in the other hand offer a guide to explain the essential concepts, ideas and recommendation on how you can discover the purpose of your life. To make it easier to understand, its not a blue-print book.
This book contains 5 chapters which the first 3 chapter is more to theory part. For the theory part, the author discus on 3 aspect, which are passion, purpose and principle. The author gives a very easy analogy, purpose is like your destination, for example you aiming to go to Kuala Lumpur from Muar, so Kuala Lumpur is like your purpose. Passion is like the fuel, which can give you energy to go to your destination (in this case is Kuala Lumpur) and principle is like the navigation system (GPS), which can show you the right path through your journey. And if you go to wrong way, it can show the right path again and you need to make a u-turn or take another junction.
For the second part, its more to practical part. This book provides you a work sheet for you to fill in the blank. This can help you to see more and clearly on what you are doing. In this part also, you will explore on how to put the theoretical concept of purpose, principles and passion that were discussed on the first part. Its more to lead you (give some suggestion) on how to design the path for your journey, like plan your time wisely, appreciate what you have (your talents), the art to disagree with you parents and many more. For the last chapter is more to case studies, which involves some questions that people had asked the author in real life.
What I can reflect from this book is, I used to have a very strong passion before which is becoming a pilot. But due to unavoidable things, like financial problem, I cant go into flying school. I apply for the cadet pilot every single year and until this moment I still do the same thing. But I am so glad, even tho I cant pursue in aviation, I still can continue my study in my second passion in my list, physics. Which is strongly connected to aircraft. Without the principle of physics, that big bird cannot soar in the sky. My father always said to me every cloud has a silver lining, so I need to make this opportunity in study physics worth. So I can contribute to community in everything that I can, to help them live a better life. And today I have a new purpose in life which is “Merakyatkan Sains!”. I want people to learn love science even tho they are not in science stream. InshaAllah. Currently I am doing degree in Applied Physics in one of local university, and in my 3rd year, struggling on my Bachelor Degree Project (PSM).
Before I end this review I would like to share some quote from the book, “You are not destined by your degree qualification. You are destined by your choices”.

I read his book "How are You?" Last year because i was not in a good state of mind and needed a booster with my really low morale/spirit/motivation etc. Personally it was just an OK read. The read didn't help me that much. Probably because i was just in a really bad slump that whole year.

However, today i saw this book on my shelf and thought i'd read it since i was bored. Plus, i'm in a better state of mind in my life now in a sense that i do not dwell so much on any mistakes or goals that do not go my way. Thanks to my really bitter experience last year haha.. Anyway, i can attest to everything that is written in this book. 100%. Because i went throught it and overcame the hurdles just like how he explained in the book. I wished, i had known the advices sooner without having to learn it myself. If anyone ever reached out to me and ask for career advice, i would recommend this read because it is exactly what i would say to people simply because i experienced it myself. I bought this book last year. I think if i had read this last year, it may not be as impactful as when my mind is clear like now.

Also, i learned new thing from this book. We can actually defy our parents. i.e our parents want us to become a doctor but we want to do arts instead. Or our parents want us to learn in a specific university or abroad. However, if we were to defy our parents it has to be through 'Ihsan'. Meaning, talk things out in respectful manner. Our parents may think they know what's best for us, but it is us who is going to live that live. That is called agreement/disagreement which is normal as humans. But the tricky part here is to communicate our message across without hurting their feelings. Unlike what i have been told at school (even until now) that whatever your parents decide for you is the best. Never argue and you will lead a blessful life. But as a person who already knew what i wanted in my life, that didn't sit quite well with my plans. Often time, my plans did not align with my parents'.

"The thing about figuring your purpose is that it can be a lifelong process throughout your life. Even though you have already set your purpose to something, you can always refine your purpose as you go and grow along the journey. It is always a long-term commitment, never a finished exercise."

Teaching used to be my passion. Somehow, it faded away and I'm always in a state of re-thinking, do I love teaching? Is teaching is one of driven motivation for me to always moves forward?

"This book is not a recipe book where you can get step by step instructions on how to have a purpose, principles and passion. This book, on the other hand, offers a guide to explain important concepts, ideas and also recommendations of how you can discover or create your passion and purpose".

This is a motivational book. You can't have a direct solution and answer after reading this book. It's more to a guide book. Step by step on how you can plan your journey to achieve what you want and what you need in life.

There's also a worksheet given at the end of this book on how you want to plan your journey. Self-analysis (what do I have now) - life goal (what do I want) - time analysis (where am I now) - schedule (how do I get what I want) - to-do list (how do I get what I want).

**********

Good motivational book. Simply English used by the author, so it's easy to understand 🙂. The author also stated a very clear meaning of passion and purpose, and how both can drive us in our journey.

Hi. Im reading this book when I was in quarantine d/t covid back in october (the month that i should celebrate my birthday??!!) but Alhamdulillah for the test, i am able to take a rest and finish this book. (Wohoo!!)

Im writing this review after 2 months of finishing this book. Hence my reviews may be different from the content. But here are my takeaways and what I think about this book.

This book gives so much words of encouragement. The book who says to you that - its okay to be different (but not being weird okay?). It’s okay to have different journeys than your friends. It is okay to take risk, it is okay to stand on what you like. It’s okay to being angry, anxious, sad on things that your friends doesn’t have feeling into. It’s okay.

But the final important thing is, even if you can decide on anything you want, as a muslim you have to follow the shariah and the law. It’s a basic and necessary. And insyaAllah, may Allah guide us through. 🥰

"Life is not a race, it's a journey".

Jadi, pandu kereta anda tanpa melihat kelajuan kereta orang lain.

Barulah hidup bahagia.

Sekiranya kita sibuk bandingkan hidup sendiri dengan orang lain. Kita sentiasa merasa ketinggalan.

If you are looking for a practical guideline to craft your life pathway, this might the one I would recommend.

The foundation of this writing is to help readers to find life purpose and to build passion. If your career are not your passion, fullfill your passion as side hustle because satisfied person will do better in career and other aspects of his life. The author also provides the worksheets to guide you to plan your life journey.

I think the best part of this writing, it was delivered in same tone as Aiman Azlan spoken and easily understood.

I received this book from sis @najihahreads at the time I just lost my job and I kept comparing my journey with others thus I stumbled upon, "Don't compare somebody's chapter 20, to your chapter 1". Well known but always forgotten. In short, set your life purpose, driven with principle, fueled by passion.

i love how Aiman Azlan use simple and easy words to understand but it is still very impactful.

Pandemic has been making it hard for me to face my online learning and I started to lose my passion in my studies. I couldn't even recognize what day it is and spend myself breaking down in my room alone.

But after reading this book, I realized that I still could do something to save myself and it's not the end yet. I have plenty time to search for my passion and what makes me happy. And I realized that during this pandemic, I can make use of my time to prepare for myself in the future.

Now, I am going to grab a pen and paper to write about my goals and my to do list. Jus like what Aiman Azlan said, it is up to me to view things happening in my life and how i am going to control it.

Upon finishing this book, I understand why it garnered mixed reviews.

It may feel like lacking of depth as author did not submit professional knowledge and solely write from a decade of experiencing with people. The points are repetitive throughout the book, perhaps to further emphasise and reminding as readers tend to float away as they proceed between pages .

Nonetheless, I personally love this book to the core. Subtle approach on vital issues - especially the ones that require individual choice.

I'd say this is a good book but it seems like it lack something important. Yes in the book it says that it is not a recipe but just a guide, still I feel like it is too simple it is like it only consist of the burnt layer of egg tart. I'm pretty sure there are many people have passion and their purpose in life especially people that spend their time to read for self-improvement. Anyway, reading is always good whether I enjoy it or not.

As a fresh graduate, this book is very helpful for me to steer my career path. Hence, I highly recommend this book if you are like me -- lost and possibly unmotivated.

The book does not provide a solution but it gives you a guide or at least, directions covers both worldly and Hereafter aspects. I like how he directed his purpose related to akhirah in navigating his worldly affairs.
