Former Green Beret Max Thornton’s career ended when he fell two hundred and fifty feet during a training exercise and broke nearly every bone in his body. Left with a permanent limp and in need of a job, he is recruited by Brotherhood Protectors where he can use his combat training and skills to protect, guard and rescue others. He didn’t expect his first assignment to be the resident mechanic. Nor did he expect the mechanic to be a spitfire of a female with a whole lot of anger.
Josephina Angelica Barrera-Ramirez or JoJo, as her friends call her, prefers to be left alone with the work she does on the machinery and vehicles of the Lost Valley Ranch. Suffering from situational amnesia brought on by an attack she sustained during a deployment to Afghanistan, she’s touchy about being touched and doesn’t take any flack from ranch guests or the Brotherhood Protectors operating out of the lodge. When she becomes the target of a shadowy figure in the night, a former Green Beret is assigned as her bodyguard until the attacker can be found and neutralized. Forced to have the Green Beret around, her distrust of men is challenged and the wall around her heart crumbles.
When danger threatens all they come to mean to each other, Max and JoJo must fight their own fears to defeat evil while losing the battle of their hearts to win a future together.
Award-winning author Elle James grew up as an air force military brat. She received her work ethic from her rock-solid father, her creative streak from her artistic mother and inspiration from her writing partner and sister, Delilah Devlin. As a former member of the army reserves and a current member of the air force reserves, she's traveled across the United States and to Germany, managed a full-time job, and raised three wonderful children. She and her husband have even tried their hands at ranching exotic birds (ostriches, emus and rheas) in the Texas hill country. Ask her, and she'll tell you what it's like to go toe-to-toe with an angry three-hundred-and-fifty-pound bird and live to tell about it!
Her adventures in the army and air force reserves, and the wild antics of her life on a small ranch in Texas give her fodder for mystery, suspense and humor in her writing. Elle writes gothic, paranormal mystery for the Harlequin Intrigue line and paranormal romantic comedy for Dorchester Publishing. A former manager of computer programming and project management professionals, Elle is happy she now has the opportunity to pursue her writing full time.
Another action packed military romance from Colorado where the Brotherhood Protectors are setting up their new office. Max, one of their members, after being discharged from the army with a bad injury is trying to adjust himself to this new lifestyle. He meets at the new site Jojo who has got a bleary and uncertain past. They immediately connect and Max’s task is to protect her from something murky that is surfacing from that past she is trying to bury. A wonderful story and lovely characters that will capture the reader’s interest right from the beginning of the book.
The prologue grabbed me, shredded my heart. What a moving, heart wrenching story. JoJo diminutive, veteran of the Army where she worked in the motor pool. She struggles with nightmares and limited memory of her attack. Max, veteran, newest employee of Brotherhood Protectors, walks with a limp after breaking every bone in his body. This is not a mystery. You have a good idea of the guilty party, but it is definitely suspense. Rocky Mountain Rescue really pushed buttons on scenarios happening for the female enlisted. Suspense, steam action, and the feeling of family. I want to go to Gunnys ranch.
Rocky Mountain Rescue is book 2 in the Brotherhood Protectors Colorado series by Elle James and these men and women just make you want more! !
Max Thornton's Green Beret military career ended after falling over 200 feet during a training exercise and almost lost his life. After months of healing and a permanent limp he is recruited by Hank Patterson, owner of the Brotherhood Protectors agency in Montana, who is now opening another agency in Colorado and wants his military skills to help rescue and protect others in need.
Josephina "JoJo" Angelica Barriera-Ramirez is military trained and while on deployment in Afghanistan she was attacked and left for dead and no memory of what happened. Deciding to leave the military she returns home to Colorado to hopefully recover her memory and find the person(s) who did this to her. Soon she is being targeted again but she doesn't know who it is...someone new or from her past?
When Max is assigned to be her bodyguard and find the culprit these two will need to open up, defeat their fears and maybe find what is really missing and ultimately important to a future...only time will tell.
Max and JoJo are both veterans who have been through a lot physically and emotionally. Now with someone hell bent on killing her, Max will do all in his power to protect her, including facing his worst fears of mountains. I think the Colorado boys are giving a good run to the Montana boys.
Jojo Ramirez is running form an incident in her past. She ends up at the Lodge where the Rocky Mountain rescue guys will be set up and running missions. Jojo is a former Army motor pool mechanic and can fix anything. Anything except her past. Max Thornton is former military Green Beret but had a medical discharge after falling from a cliff and has a permanent limp. Jojo becomes the target of a killer and Max is assigned to protect her. Great setting and characters.
In the prologue of this book we get to see the rescue part of the traumatic event that sends JoJo home to Colorado. She had a choice there but when you don't know who you can trust to have your back, it really isn't much of one. She doesn't remember her attack or her attacker and that's dangerous in many ways. She helps out on the Ranch with any and all things mechanical and also lends a hand at the Watering Hole.
Max Thornton is the latest member of the Brotherhood Protectors, a former Green Beret he has fought to find a new normal following multiple injuries. This job is the next step in that recovery. Until they have more men and assignments Jake and Max are also helping out on the Ranch and the bar. Max gets a bit of a surprise when he startles JoJo. Although she doesn't explain her reaction, it makes him aware she has an issue as they go to help Gunny at the bar.
Now Gunny has stet up a campaign start with an aspiring politician and he doesn't give the gang much time to prepare. With a bit of a briefing and quick decisions on activities they're ready.
After a late night, Max follows JoJo to her apartment to be sure she's safe, especially after the altercation at the Watering Hole. He notices a car with someone in it that raises his hackles, so he hangs around for a bit until the car leaves.
In the morning JoJo notices someone had tried to get past the deadbolt. At the ranch, no one is happy about that and JoJo decides to stay at the ranch but she needs to get some clothes from her apartment. Max goes with her and it's a good thing, the smell of gas has them both running, narrowly escaping the brunt of the explosion.
Now Max has his first case, protecting JoJo while they entertain the rather smarmy politician, his aide and campaign people.
There's lots of suspense and intrigue as Max and the team work through the limited clues.
I'm in catch-up mode with this series, reading the next one now.
We are back in Colorado with the newly form Colorado division of the Brotherhood Protectors . New hire Max Thornton is a former Green Beret injured during a training exercise. Jojo Ramirez, a former Army mechanic, left the military after being beaten, raped and left for dead in the desert of Afghanistan. She is still suffering from that nightmare and has no recollection who attacked her. But being touched and men are things she still does not handle well. Her life revolves around working at the ranch and keeping to herself. As Max and Jojo get to know each other, a connection is made and when it’s obvious that her life is in danger, Max’s first assignment as a member of the Brotherhood Protectors, is to keep Jojo safe. This story was filled whodunit and danger, as well as romance. But it was more than that. A reminder that rape in the armed forces does exist and more should be done to protect those affected. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
“Rocky Mountain Rescue” is the 2nd book in the ‘Brotherhood Protectors: Colorado’ series by Elle Cooper. It’s a dramatic story and more emotional than I would have expected it to be. The main characters in this story are Josephina (JoJo) and Max.
The prologue of this book is intense and bone-chilling. It's the kind of thing that makes you feel sick to your stomach. In it, we get to experience Army mechanic Jojo’s rescue after a vicious attack that almost kills her while she’s stationed overseas. Her survival is a miracle. After she recovers, she’s given the choice rejoining her unit or accepting a discharge. Nothing has been done about her case and she can’t trust anybody in her unit, so she accepts the discharge and goes home. She takes a job working for her only close friends at a ranch they own. Max is a Green Beret who survived a massive fall during a training exercise. He broke almost every bone in his body. Forced to accept a medical discharge, he was left with a limp, residual pain, no career, and a bleak future. A job offer to join the new branch of the Brotherhood Protectors gives him hope that he’ll be able to use his skill set after all. The agency is leasing space at the ranch where JoJo works.
I’m leaving out a lot because I don’t want to spoil this story for you. But, it starts to become apparent that somebody is targeting JoJo with the intent to kill her. Max is assigned as her bodyguard while they try to figure out why anybody would want her dead. She’s jumpy but fierce as she tries to deal with PTSD from the attack initial on her. As the story progresses, JoJo realizes that Max is just about the only man around whom she feels comfortable. The connection between them keeps heating up while the level of danger around JoJo keeps increasing as well. There’s plenty of steam in this story and some funny moments, too. JoJo and Max are great together and I liked the way the story ended for them. Just as the couple from the first book of the series made appearances in this one, I’m hoping we’ll see JoJo and Max again. I appreciated that the book also dealt a bit with the subject of sexual assault in the military, and the truth that PTSD can be caused by many different things.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
While this is the second book of the series, you don't have to read the first one to fully enjoy this. This author is fantastic. I absolutely love everything from her so far. She never disappoints. The action is truly intense and thoroughly engrossing. I felt like I was right there in the middle of everything.
The Brotherhood Protectors is opening a branch in Colorado!!! Yay! Max is the second recruit for the branch. The Green Beret was injured in a training jump. He barely survived the fall. He comes to new location that is opening on the Lost Valley Ranch and until they get assignments, he is helping out the owner of the ranch, a former Marine, Gunny along with Gunny's daughter RJ. Max is attracted to a woman who is very standish and prickly. Jojo is also former military. While deployed overseas, Jojo is kidnapped, raped and beaten and buried in the dirt and left for dead. She has no memory of the attack. She is becoming attracted to the former Green Beret who seems to rescue her several times.
What these two go through are hurdles that seem insurmountable but how the author gets them through kept me glued to my e-reader.
This story is told in a dual POV format. That really helps me to connect and understand the characters the way the author intended. This is a sexy read with a couple of scenes that may not be appropriate for someone under the age of 18.
Oh my God! I couldn't believe the beginning of the book. It grabs you and continues to keep your interest to the end of the book. I even took another look at the cover to make sure I had the right book and author. Elle has a gem of book with this one.
We met JoJo in the first book of this series, but we didn't know much about her background. We knew she had been in the US Army, then came home and got a job working at the Watering Hole which is part of the Lost Valley Ranch. This book focuses on an event from JoJo's past that impacts her present life. JoJo remembers what happened to her in the past but cannot remember who was involved when it happened,
The Brother Protectors Company has offices in the basement of the Lost Valley Ranch. Brother Protectors is a Company made of mainly ex-military men who provide individual or group protection. The owner's daughter of the Ranch managed to arrange a date between JoJo and Max for the Sadie Hawke Day Dance. This was the beginning of their relationship not knowing that it would lead to a happy ending for them providing JoJo doesn't get killed. Max is assigned to be JoJo protector until it can be determined out who is trying to kill her and why. Max is romancing JoJo while her people from her pass have been trying to interfere with your life.
I received a free copy of this book for a honest review. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys romance suspense and Mystery books.
Mechanic Josephina ‘Jojo’ Angelica Barrera-Ramirez’ plan to enlist didn’t go per plan. Her friend RJ couldn’t buddy sign up with her; she was beaten, raped and buried; she has holes in her memory and a fear of men, especially in small spaces. The last thing Jojo remembers was walking from the shower. It had to be a fellow soldier but Jojo can’t even talk about it!
A training exercise broke most of Green Beret Max Thornton’s bones. He got a limp, a medical discharge and a stateside trip out of the deal. Max joined the Colorado Brotherhood group spinning up with more talent than work so far. When the team doesn’t have work, they help out at the bar or the ranch, working at the bar Max and Jojo form an easy friendship. She likes that he makes her feel safe and like pre-attack Jojo.
Max noticed Jojo’s jumpiness and vows to look out for her, jumpy in a bar of drunken men could be dangerous. A too friendly customer goes a bit far to get JoJo’s attention. When the bar hosts a campaign kickoff, the politician is too interested in Jojo and his aide sends the wrong kind of shivers along her spine. One night, seeing Jojo safely home, Max has to intimidate a suitor staring at Jojo’s apartment, later save her from a gas filled apartment and she wants to open up to him but hasn’t yet. No guesses what Max’ first assignment is. Rating: 4.25stars
Max and JoJo's story began briefly in Seal Salvation, the first of this new series. I was intrigued by JoJo as she was hiding something from RJ and Gunny, something horrible that happened to her in the Army. We learn what that is in this story and it brings to light the struggles women can have in the Armed Forces.
JoJo is a feisty, fiery five-foot-nothing woman who works hard but doesn't want or need a man, never mind a relationship. Max is over 6 feet of strong, sexy male but he walks with a limp due to a horrible mountain climbing accident while he was still in the Army. He was medically discharged and now works for the Brotherhood Protectors.
This book has what I have come to expect from Ms. James and her Brotherhood Protectors series. I love this new installment of this series. The women are strong but vulnerable and the men are the same. It's hard not to get caught up in the lives of these characters, they matter. JoJo deserves every happiness and the good surprises at the end of the book. She is a survivor and a great character that will stay will me long after I have read the book.
Wow! Only two books into this spinoff series of the Brotherhood Protectors and I'm totally loving it. Rocky Mountain Rescue is a fantastic romantic suspense by Elle James. Ms. James once again weaves a tale that engages readers' attention and emotions. This book is well-written with a cast of characters second to none. JoJo was attacked while deployed and all she knows is that she was beaten, raped, buried and then rescued by a dog. Max was discharged from the military after injuring his leg and is a new hire to the Brotherhood Protectors. Max and JoJo's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and can't wait for my next read by Elle James. Rocky Mountain Rescue is book 2 of the Brotherhood Protectors Colorado Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Once again we are in Colorado with the latest offshoot to the Brotherhood Protection We met JoJo in the first book as she is the best friend of RJ who was the love interest in the first book in series in fact it is her ranch that is the headquarters for the latest branch of the protectors. JoJo was attacked raped and left for dead while she was serving in Afghanistan in the army but she doesn't remember who attacked her but it has left her unable to handle men touching her so she just hunkers down and works hard on the ranch and the bar that is part of the property. meanwhile max Thornton has arrived to be the latest protector A green Beret badly injured in a fall during a training exercise he has fought hard to get back on his feet. He is glad to finally have another reason to get up each morning because each of his broken bones are protector to the core but one look at JoJo and he knows she is meant to be his so when danger threatens her he will protect her to his core even if he hadn't been assigned to do so. Can they finally have a future together You will have to read to see
Rocky Mountain Rescue: Brotherhood Protectors Colorado: book 2 is by Elle James. Very good, short, exciting book with clean romance. Takes place on a dude ranch. The Lost Valley Ranch, near Fool’s Gold, Colorado near Colorado Springs. Ranch is owned by Gunny Tate; but basement of inn is rented by Brotherhood Protectors Colorado unit. They help Gunny with chores and The Watering Hole when not busy. Unit is just being formed with this series. Former Green Beret Max Thornton fell during a mountaineering incident and messed up his leg. This meant he was ushered out of the Green Beret. When he joined the Protectors, he lived at the ranch. Here he met Jojo, Gunny’s “other daughter” and RJ’s best friend. She had been an army mechanic but got out after being beaten, raped, placed in a grave, and left to die in Afghanistan desert. Luckily, she was found and her base was notified so she was rescued. However, she couldn’t remember anything about the incident. Now she is working on the ranch. Someone wants to kill Jojo and Max becomes her protector. Must find who wants to kill her before he has to go out on another mission.
JoJo is forced to deal with the reason she left the Army.
This is book two in the Brotherhood Protectors Colorado series. Jojo grew up with RJ and her dad Gunny. Both RJ and JoJo planned to go into the Army together but RJ had a health issue and JoJo spent ten years in the Army. She was discharged because she has beaten, raped and buried alive. Ashamed and with amnesia JoJo has told no one except for Emily her therapist. She has no memory of the attack nor can she identify her attacker. He could literally walk up to her and she wouldn’t know it.
Gunny takes a reservation from a man running for senator. Using the ranch as a team building experience. As they begin prepping for their arrival, Max comes up behind JoJo and finds himself on his back. He is aware something happened to JoJo and she isn’t talking about it. Jake and Max decide JoJo needs some watching after someone tried to break into her apartment and then blew her apartment up.
Jojo learns to trust her instincts and she know Max is a good guy.
Josephina "Jojo" Barrera-Ramirez is back in Colorado working with her close friend RJ on the Lost Valley Ranch. She has situational amnesia following an attack while deployed in Afghanistan. Somehow danger has followed her back to Colorado. Lost Valley Ranch is where the Brotherhood Protectors are setting up their new Colorado branch and fortunately former Green Beret Max Thornton is there to watch over Jojo as his first Brotherhood Protectors assignment. Not that he wouldn't be doing that anyway since Jojo and Max find themselves attracted to each other.
Rocky Mountain Rescue by Elle James is the second book in her Brotherhood Protectors Colorado series. I really liked this storyline. The dark moment near the end of the story was shocking and edge-of-your-seat suspenseful. I love the whole premise of the Brotherhood Protectors and am so glad Ms. James continues to treat her readers to stories in this series.
I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Elle James has another awesome book with Rocky Mountain Rescue. JoJo Ramirez, Army mechanic, is home from the Army due to an attack while deployed in Afghanistan so bad that she has no memory of the event. She’s seeing a therapist and working on the Lost Valley Ranch, mostly keeping to herself and want nobody to touch her. Max Thornton, former Green Beret, was medically boarded when he fell 250 feet on a training exercise breaking, well, just about every bone in his body. At loose ends, he found a career when the Brotherhood Protectors came calling, which is how he met JoJo. The sassy mechanic he’s attracted to becomes his first assignment as things heat up around her and they have to figure out who is after her. Ms. James wrote a great book. I love their banter, the interaction between all the characters, and the suspense. Great book!
This was a wonderful read and such a beautiful romance. Max and JoJo were truly a heart stealing couple. I felt for each of these characters but I'm not ashamed to say that JoJo's painful past broke my heart into pieces. The storyline of this book is skillfully written and consuming. I only intended to start the book last night but once I started I couldn't stop. So, yeah, I'm tired today but it was totally worth it! A complex blend of romance, suspense, action, danger and emotion makes an addicting and potent blend that flows smoothly and reads easily. Add in the bonus fact that this author entertains while shining a much needed spotlight on the horrible tragedy that is sexual assault in our armed forces and this book is a undeniable winner all the way around. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own and freely given.
They are the dregs of society, the lowest of the low and they are hiding within the armed forces, going against everything the forces stand for and targeting women...but they aim to leave no witnesses... Jojo has lived through it once, she still jumps at shadows, no way will they take her a second time! The strength of character Jojo shows in trying to reclaim her life, the determination and the hope she finally finds as she grudgingly agrees to let RJ and Max help her, brings a tear to your eye. Max has always been a protector, but after shattering almost every bone in his body his options are limited, he is thankful to the Brotherhood Protectors for his second chance but the minute he meets Jojo he knows - she is why he is here I love the Colorado Protectors, they are all a little damaged, but so much stronger than they realised.
I so love this author. Her characters are deep, flawed, and so likable, you root for them from the beginning. Max and JoJo , are both veterans that have been through so much mentally and physically. The have thinks they are both working out but are drawn to each other. Max is a total gentleman. He cares about JoJo. He knows she’s been through some kind of trauma so he steps lightly. All protective instincts firing when he’s around her. JoJo is uncomfortable around men but some how Max doesn’t make her feel uneasy. He makes her feel safe. Through the story unfolds well. What happened to both veterans and what they are working through. It nice to see characters not perfect but still being strong and finding their happily ever after. I LOVED this story! Looking forward to the next one!
Do you believe in love at first sight? Or, that a dog is a man's best friend? Jojo believes in the latter, while Max believes in the former. This is a well-written story about second chances. Their chemistry is apparent from the beginning. They both have fears that need to be conquered. Can two broken souls help each other heal?
Jojo was medically discharged from the Army after she was raped and left for dead. She owes her life to a stray dog. She still has no memory of that day. She won't be able to move on until that person is caught and put into prison.
Max was medically discharged from the Army after a rappelling accident. Now he works for the Brotherhood Protectors in Colorado. His first assignment is to protect Jojo from whoever wants her dead. But will he be able to keep things professional?
Absolutely loved this book!! Max and Jojo both has obstacles to overcome. Max thought himself lacking in some way because of his lost limb and Jojo felt lost because of the mental scars of her rape. RJ, Gunny and the whole family have a bond that brings anyone into the fold and protects and supports each other. Watching Jojo begin to understand that she can trust Max as he works to earn it without pressure, just support. Max knows something bad had happened to Jojo and despite his attraction to her he just wants to help and protect this strong woman who’s quickly capturing his heart. This story was heart warming, and pulled me in from the first word. Another brilliant book from Elle James and a fantastic addition to the Brotherhood Protectors series. Highly recommended!!
Package Deal This is the second chapter in this Brotherhood Protectors Colorado Series. This story finds Max and JoJo connecting. JoJo is struggling with an attack while in Theatre but she's also not allowing anyone to help her or really move on. Max is the newest hire for the Brotherhood in Colorado and he's still trying to figure out what it is that he is going to do as a protector. He is also very self conscious about his new limitations as well. Although he does roll with the punches when he gets down on one knee and proposes to JoJo so he can get back into see her at the hospital as her "fiancé". A few poignant quotes, "we all come into this world naked", as well as "You're worthy of love." I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Jojo, an Army veteran medically discharged after an assault and being left for dead, has amnesia and can’t remember who attacked her. She works at the ranch where the Brotherhood Protectors have set up their new Colorado operations office. Max is one of their newer recruits, also medically discharged after a disabling mountain fall. As they spend more time together, she feels safe with him. Will they be able to identify the perpetrator whose hiding in plain sight in their backyard? Suspense, intrigue and action. Well written and a very good read! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
5 stars I received a free copy of the post military romance Rocky Mountain Rescue: Brotherhood Protectors Colorado Book 2 by Elle James and this review was given freely. When a protector becomes a predator. This is a book with SASS. Suspenseful and action packed with a sinister undertone combined with a mildly steamy love story involving two former military trauma survivors. Honorably discharged after being raped and buried alive, former Army mechanic JoJo struggles with nightmares, physical contact and her growing feelings for medically discharged fall survivor, former Green Beret mountaineer Max. 18+ recommended for violence
A quick read with plenty of suspense. We are back in Colorado with Gunny, RJ, and Jake At the Lost Valley Ranch. JoJo has left the army after a TBI where she hasn't been able to remember what happened to her and has returned to the only family she knows. While Max has come to the Ranch to work out of The Brotherhood Protectors newest office. The chemistry between these two is smouldering waiting for a chance to ignite. To move forward JoJo is going to need to remember everything, but she may not get the chance if certain people get to her first. This story will have you engrossed from the first page.
I was thrilled to see that this was JoJo’s story after we met her in SEAL Salvation, and, as usual, Elle James did not disappoint. With the focus for once on a female vet and her struggles, some of which are unique to women, JoJo’s story shows a woman of courage and determination, and Max, the latest Protector, is both empathetic and droolworthy. I couldn’t put this book down, which is a frequent affliction when reading Elle James’s books, but this one had something – extra. Maybe it was JoJo herself, maybe it was the story, maybe it was just being in the Colorado Protectors world again – whatever it was, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
This is a great book! Max is a former Green Beret that fell off a 250 foot cliff. He has a limp and still has a lot of pain in his leg. JoJo was an Army mechanic in Afghanistan when she was attacked, beaten, raped and buried alive. She has amnesia and can't remember what happened. One of my favorite parts of this book was when JoJo, who is a foot shorter than Max, used her Krav Maga skills to throw Max over her shoulder when he came up behind her and scared her. I received an ARC of this book for an honest review and I loved it. There's lots of action, suspense, romance and friendship. I recommend this book to everyone.
