All he wants is to be left alone

Jake Cogburn lost his leg, his career, his brotherhood and his will to live when he stepped on that IED in Afghanistan. Back in his home state of Colorado, he’s determined to bury himself as deeply as he can in a bottle of Jack Daniels until the pain in his leg and his heart is so numb he can no longer feel.

No man left behind

Hank Patterson refuses to let his buddy, Jake, slowly kill himself with alcohol. Hank’s plan to expand the Brotherhood Protectors into Colorado will only work if he can hire the best men for the job. He wants Jake and sends fellow Coloradan, Kujo, to pull Jake out of an alcohol-induced haze to work for the team. Hank’s contact has a place they can set up operations while flying under the radar—a flailing dude ranch, run by a former Marine Gunnery sergeant and his feisty daughter.

Rucker Juliet Tate is as unconventional as the name her father gave her upon her birth. After her mother died when RJ was only a baby, she was left in the capable hands of her taciturn Marine father to be raised tough and ready to accept any challenge. Including adopting a Military Working Dog with only three legs. Retraining the dog to live in a civilian world is practically a fulltime job. She’s up for it, until she witnesses a meeting she shouldn’t have seen and is thrown into the path of a killer who wants to wipe her memory, by erasing her from existence.

Jake’s first assignment as a Brotherhood Protector is to stick to the rebellious daughter of the owner of a dude ranch and make certain she doesn’t fall victim to the person gunning for her. Meanwhile, RJ fights to keep from falling victim to the love blossoming in her heart over the young Navy SEAL who dogs her every footstep. Even her German Shepherd likes the SEAL better than RJ. And worse…she finds herself falling for the cranky, one-legged frogman. Her challenge is to live long enough to see where these feelings take her.

A quick, fun read if you like military romance and romantic suspense. I won't say too much because Elle is a good friend of mine. But a great start to a new series. I loved Gunny, the heroine's dad. (can't wait for Thorn & JoJo's story!)

SEAL Salvation is a magnificent romantic suspense by Elle James. Ms. James has built a book that will suck you into the story and keep you there until the end. Have your drink and snacks handy, you won't want to put the book down to get them once you start reading. I love the characters in this book, they make this book a delight to read. Jake is medically discharged from the Navy. Hank Patterson wants him to head up the Brotherhood Protectors Colorado branch. RJ loves running the ranch, lodge and bar with her father and has no desire to leave. Jake and RJ's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and can't wait to read the next book in the series. SEAL Salvation is book 1 of the Brotherhood Protectors Colorado Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Jake The Cog Cogburn, former SEAL, lost his leg in Afghanistan, and with no family and the lost of his "brothers" he has lost his way and will to live. Hank Patterson wants to recruit him for his Brotherhood Protectors to run the new branch in Colorado. He sends Joseph "kuso" Kuntz to convince Jake that he is still needed and his leg was the not the total of all his skills or his identity. The night that Jake and Kujo arrive at the Lost Valley Ranch, owned by Gunny Tate and his daughter Rucker Juliet (RJ), where Hank wants to set up the Brotherhoods Colorado headquarters, there is a murder and an attempt on RJ's life. Jake saves RJ and is going to be her bodyguard until they find the murderer. Great characters, a mystery and adventure, with romance and witty banter.

I read an ARC provided by the publisher. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

Jake, a medically discharged Navy Seal, lost his leg in an IED blast while on tour in Afghanistan. Since being discharged, Jake has had a hard time finding his purpose in life. Jake drinks his nights and days away feeling sorry for himself-until Kujo shows up at his doorstep with an offer. Hank Patterson, head of Brotherhood Protectors, wants to expand his business into Colorado. A former Marine Gunny Tate has a failing dude ranch. So Hank sends Kujo to drag Jake out of his stupor to see if the security business and dude ranch are a good fit. While Jake is reluctant and doesn’t see how he can possibly be of any assistance to anyone, he agrees to go with Kujo.

Rucker Juliet Tate, only child to Gunny, works alongside her dad at the dude ranch. Nothing is a secret. When the Brotherhood Protectors offer to rent a place on the ranch, and help out with chores and in the bar for free, it’s too good to be true. When RJ witnesses a murder and is almost murdered herself, she reluctantly agrees to the added income and security. Working alongside Jake brings out feelings she’s never felt before, but she knows he has a secret.

What an EXCELLENT start to this new series!!! I loved it! The suspense, the dude ranch in Colorado, RJ and Jake...swoon! I loved that RJ didn’t tell Jake how he should feel, but let him work through things himself. I loved that Striker was a retired military bomb sniffing dog with a disability. The mining for gold theme was unique and enjoyable. I can’t wait to learn more about Thorn and Jojo. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.

Abrupt ending

The book had an abrupt end, jumping right into the epilogue. What happened? I had to go back to the last page since there was such a quick change from the story to the epilogue that I thought I must have skipped a couple of pages. Nope , it really did end that quickly and transitioned into another story.

Good introduction to the new spin-off of 'Brotherhood Protectors'...

I liked getting to know RJ/Jules and Cog/Jake and Striker too... although, I have to say the set-up for JoJo's story has me way more interested. Look forward to see how that one is going to play out.

Hank Patterson knows his friend and former SEAL Jake Cogburn is going through a rough time. He's not going to lose his friend to alcohol and he has just the plan to help him.

The Brotherhood Protectors are expanding and Hank wants one of the new offices to be in Colorado. He thinks he's found the perfect place a Lost Valley Ranch is a struggling Dude Ranch run by former Marine Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Tate and his daughter Rucker Juliet aka RJ. He enlists Kujo who is from Colorado to entice Jake to accept the position of running the new office.

It takes just a bit of persuation to get Jake to accompany him to the ranch but Kujo managed it just fine with a mention or two of Hank.

Gunny had let his daughter know about the two men coming to possibly rent space on the ranch. She was looking forward to meeting them and understand exactly what kind of business they were looking to run from there. Unfortunately getting cleaned up from chores took longer than she anticipated and she had to work the bar.

When the waitress JoJo startles her she breaks a bottle of Tequila, this leads into my favorite scene as she cleans up.

With RJ attacked the possibility she could be a target comes to the fore. Of course she wants no part of a bodyguard but both Jake and her father insist on it.

I also love her retired MWD a three-legged Belgian Malinois named Striker, so protective and loving. He also finds a kinship with Jake which I thought was cute.

There's plenty of suspense as Kujo and Jake try to figure out why the real estate agent was murdered especially since it occurred where the new office of the Brotherhood Protectors would be.

Jake finds himself in this book as he protects RJ, of course he didn't expect to fall for RJ in the process.

With suspense, action, and a simmer to sizzle relationship, I couldn't put this book down.

I really need to catch up on this series now.

Former Navy SEAL Jake Cogburn has hit rock bottom after an IED took part of his leg and ended a career he loved.
But a friend from the past, Hank Patterson, founder of Brotherhood Protectors, is determined to help him by offering Jake a job. That of opening a division of his company in Colorado and putting Jake in charge.
Little did anyone realize that not only would this opportunity give Jake a new life and hope in the future, but the woman he ends up protecting would be his salvation.
RJ Tate is that woman. One tough and beautiful lady brought up by her Marine father, a man she adores. They own a dude ranch and it’s there that the new division will be establishing. But first they must figure out who’s trying to kill RJ.
If you have read the Brotherhood Protectors series, you will visit with some of those characters. If not, you are in for a treat in this new series.
This first book has an engaging plot , filled with a dangerous unknown , and complex characters that are very real.
It also is a reminder of the difficulties the returning troops encounter when they return to civil life. Especially if they have been wounded.
I am looking forward to more stories in this series.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Kujo returns to Colorado to pick up a lost soul, well more like a wounded veteran who lost his leg and his way after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan. The Brotherhood Protectors are expanding into Colorado and Hank thinks that Jake Cogburn is just the man to head this new branch. The trouble is that he needs some convincing as he thinks he is washed up and unable to help anyone let alone himself.

The new office will be set up on an operating dude ranch but first Jake will have to figure out who tried to murder Rucker Juliet Tate, the owner's daughter. She is remarkable. She is training an ex-military dog who lost a back paw and is afraid of loud noises. He is instrumental in saving them at one point in the story and he actually teaches Jake a thing or two about abilities and not disabilities. They race to find a killer before he kills RJ for seeing something she shouldn't have.

I liked this story a lot and the dog was awesome! The is a wonderful start to the new series and we are introduced to new characters who will definitely be in the series in the future. Ms. James describes the series in such a way that makes me want to go there and explore the ghost towns she writes of and pan for gold.

Seal Salvation : Brotherhood Protectors Colorado: book 1 is by Elle James. Very good, short, exciting book with only a small bit of romance. Takes place on a dude ranch, The Lost Valley Ranch, near Fool’s Gold, Colorado near Colorado Springs. The ranch is owned by Gunny Tate; but basement of inn is rented by Brotherhood Protectors Colorado unit. They help Gunny with chores and The Watering Hole when not busy. Unit is just being formed with this series.
Hank Patterson sent Kujo down to Fool’s gold to talk to Gunny Tate about renting a portion of his ranch to build a headquarters for the Colorado section of his security business. He hired only qualified service men who were no longer in the service. It mattered not to him if they were handicapped in one way or another. From experience, he knew they still had the essence of themselves inside along with the stamina to finish growing up as heroes. He wanted Jake “Cog” Cogburn to lead this group.
They find Gunny Tate and his daughter RJ ready and willing to get to work with the Brotherhood. Jake was also impressed. Then things began to happen. Someone shot at RJ while she was on a trail ride with guests. She was almost smothered to death when someone attacked her at the Watering Hole.
Can they get to the bottom of the problems so their world will settle down?

Jake & Jules find redemption with each other

Jake (Cog) was wallowing in his self pity after losing a leg on an IED, however, Hank Patterson wanted him to head up a new branch of the Brotherhood Protectors in Colorado. Hank sent Kujo to find and talk to him about his possible future with them. He agreed and they went to see Gunny who owned a guest ranch and who was in financial difficulty to check the suitability of his ranch for them to embed their operation within the ranch. They negotiated the rental and whilst looking at the buildings, Jake wanted a beer and headed to the bar where he found the daughter RJ (Jules) being beaten and choked violently in the car park. He threw him off her and let him escape whilst he conducted emergency CPR. All was good and their first job was to shadow RJ until he was caught.
There were a number of attempts on her life until they were able to find the suspects and close the case. Cog and RJ also began to have strong passionate feelings toward each other so Brotherhood Protectors was here to stay in Colorado.
Good book and recommend it to all.

I enjoyed this story. The setting is a ranch in small-town Colorado run by a father and his daughter. The story highlights the very hard work and dedication it takes to run a working ranch. Gunny Tate is a retired Marine who chose this life to raise his beautiful daughter Rucker Juliet Tate or RJ.
Jake Cogburn is a newly medically discharged SEAL who's not sure he wants to live anymore. He lost his leg and now feels he is useless but thankfully there is a new organization that has been put together by former warriors and they could use Jake with his SEAL training. The Brotherhood Protectors is setting up a branch office in Colorado and have chosen Marine Gunny's ranch to work out of. It will give the business privacy and help a fellow serviceman. While scouting out the ranch the action begins and their first protection case starts because someone just tried to kill RJ! Thank God Jake came to the rescue just in time. The mystery begins as well as a connection between Jake and RJ.
I liked the characters, the mystery, and the vividly described ranch. But there were a lot of typos. Linda

SEAL Salvation is the first book in installment in Ella James’ Brotherhood Protectors Colorado series. In this book, readers meet Rucker Juliet “RJ” Tate and Jake “Cog” Cogburn. Her ex-marine father, Daniel “Gunny” Tate raised her single handedly. As such, she is tough, strong, smart, brave and beautiful. Destiny brings RJ and Cog together when Cog is given a second chance to put his life together. Cog, a wounded veteran was caught in a downward spiral until a former SEAL and friend, Hank, throws him a lifeline--set up a security branch in Colorado. RJ witnesses a murder, is choked by the assailant, and is rescued by Cog. Will RJ be safe? How do RJ and Cog deal with their attraction? You must read this book to find out.

Ms. James creates a perfect recipe for this romantic suspense. She blended in strong and likeable lead characters who share a chemistry. She adds a splash of intimacy to make this outstanding romance. Likewise, she does a remarkable job with literary devices such as dialog, POV, and descriptive language. The dialog, both conversational and internal monologues are solid. The dual POV helps endear RJ and Cog to readers. Descriptive language makes the scenes vivid and captivating and contribute to moving this plot along.

The book was okay. I think Jake transformed too quickly. One day he is wallowing in booze and the next day he is a new man, ready to help save the day. The sex was also too soon. They had sex in a shared bathroom. That is stupid. As part owner of the lodge, why didn't RJ have her own bathroom?

There were a couple of editing mistakes that I noticed. The sheriff was called after a shooting. However, when he got on the ATV, he was a deputy. Then when they arrived at the shooting location, he became a sheriff again. So, one guy can go from being a sheriff, then a deputy, and back to a sheriff in only an hour.

After breakfast, one morning, RJ rinsed the dishes and put them in the dishwasher. Then for the dinner meal, Jake washed and she dried the dishes. Why didn't they put them in the dishwasher? A lodge would definitely have a lot of dishes to be cleaned.

I did not like that a teaser for the next book was in the epilogue. That is not necessary. A person will read the next book if they want to. There is no need to try to entice them.

The book was so so.

After Jake lost his foot he didn't really want to live, he was in the worst place you can immagine when Hank heard about his old friend and decided to pull him up by his boot straps and have him run the new office in Colorado. He would have to decide if he was up for the challange of taking the job. Could he decide that you aren't down and out if you don't have 2 arms or 2 legs?

RJ is a woman of many talents. She's a bartender, a dude ranch operator, a tour guide and a horse wrangler. When she spots trouble at the bar she's runs right into the mix and if not for Jake she would have died that night. Can the attraction that they feel lead to more? Why would anyone want a man that's not whole? What will it take for Jake to see he's more than an one legged man but someone that can protect RJ.
Love the Brotherhood Protectors.

I was given an advanced reader copy and I'm feelly leaving this review. I would recommend this book to everyone.

The Brotherhood Protectors are opening in Colorado – a whole new group to read about! Fans of Elle James’s Brotherhood Protectors will be familiar with Hank Patterson’s protectiveness and loyalty to those he’s served with and those he hires, so his determination to bring Jake Cogburn on board after Cog loses a leg is not surprising. He sees Cog heading the new Colorado branch of the Protectors, and he sends Kujo down to see if he can drag Cog out of the bleak state of mind he’s been in since leaving the service. Of course, where the Protectors are, there are always people needing their protection, and where better to have this than on their new Colorado base. This is a great story; it’s got it all – wounded hero, strong female protagonist, increasing suspense, no obvious answers – I look forward to more of the Colorado Brotherhood Protectors!

I was gifted a copy of this book, and the opinions are my own.

Jake Cogburn lost his lower leg from an IED. He is no longer a SEAL now. No longer anything anymore. He's been home in Colorado, drinking his problems away when one of his old friends, Kujo, comes to recruit him to help build and head up a new Brotherhood Protectors office. Jake guesses that's better than drinking himself to death so, he moves to a ranch owned by Gunny and, his daughter, RJ. The first night there, he saves RJ from being murdered after walking into a murder. The instant heat between Jake and RJ is off the charts but, these two are constantly butting heads.
It's Jake's job to protect RJ and, her job to show him she is perfectly capable of protecting herself!!
Jake already knows he has to prove himself to Hank Patterson, his friend and, former mentor. Now, he has to prove himself to the woman he is protecting and, growing to love and, her 3 legged, former Military Dog who was a bomb sniffer.
Thoroughly enjoyable, fast paced, action-packed read!

A great story

“Look, Cog, the only easy day was yesterday. Are you a SEAL or not?” That got Jake’s attention. Who in the hell was that on the other side of the door. RJ works hard beside her dad. She was raised by her dad and was more of a tomboy, than a girl. But when the two meet, the chemistry between them is explosive. Two lost souls looking to fit in.

Jake is a former SEAL. He was medically discharged when he stepped on an IED and lost one of his legs. So he’s drowning his sorrows in a bottle. Then there’s a knock on his door that would change his life forever. A brother in arms, offering him a job. But what kind of job could he do with one leg.

Rucker or RJ to her friends, was an only child. She helped her dad with their ranch and bar. RJ was closing the bar, when she was attacked outside. She just knew she was going to die. But then her lungs are filled with air and the softest lips she has ever felt were on her lips. A stranger had saved her life.

4.5/5 Stars! Our hero, Jake, meets our heroine, RJ, at a very challenging point in his life. He suffered a life altering injury and subsequent dismissal from the Navy SEALS. He is struggling to find meaning and purpose in his life when he is invited to explore a work opportunity which brings him to RJs home. What I loved most about the dynamic between the H and h was that RJ did not set out to "fix" or "cure" Jake, rather her confident personality and self-assuredness provided him with a foundation upon which he could explore the new opportunities that recently presented within his life. She allowed him the time and space to figure things out on his own. Jake and RJ don't "complete" eachother nor are they dependant on one another for happiness, rather they complement each other. The author did a great job at detailing the growth of their relationship, while weaving in a storyline about a physical threat that the couple/ranch was facing.

Bitter and self-destructive over being involuntarily retired from the military, the last thing Jake Cogburn expected was an offer from Hank Patterson to establish a Brotherhood Protection office in Colorado. Within hours of working out details on how the security business and Hank’s friend Gunny’s dude ranch/bar business would co-exist on the same patch of land, Gunny’s beauty of a daughter, Rucker Juliet Tate, (RJ), was in danger, making it clear to Jake he was still a marine!

RJ had walked outside for a moment and saw two men tussling outside the bar. Used to breaking up that kind of thing regularly, RJ stepped in to put a stop to it. After leaving his previous opponent dead, the survivor turned to attack her and was in the process of choking her to death when Jake stepped in, saving her life while the culprit ran away. A bit of investigating makes it clear the men were not in a run of the mill bar fight.

Hank decides he wants to expand the Brotherhood Protectors into Colorado. This is book one in the Colorado series spinoff. He has the perfect man to head it up. Jake Cogburn who he served with. Jake lost part of his leg in explosion in Afghanistan. Feeling sorry for himself, Hank sends Kujo to Colorado to get the operation up and running. Hank has picked Marine Gunny Tate who is running a barely surviving dude ranch as their home base.

Gunny has a daughter Rucker Juliet aka RJ. She and her best friend JoJo were suppose to go into the Army together right out of high school. They found a defect with RJ in the physical so she stayed home. She and her dad are running themselves ragged trying to make things work. When Hank makes a proposal it is well timed.

Actually I had a hard time with both Jake and RJ. Jake has a chip on his shoulder as he is a cripple, not a whole man. RJ is trying to do the work of several to prove her worth. I would give this three and a half stars.

I received a free copy of the steamy post military romance SEAL Salvation: Brotherhood Protectors Colorado book 1 by Elle James and this review was given freely.
A wonderful blend of family, intrigue, action, suspense and danger mixed with a bit of a surprise and the familiarity we are accustom to in Elle James' ex military characters.
Montana's Brotherhood Protector's founder Hank Patterson sends Kujo to Colorado to enlist medically discharged new amputee and former demolition expert SEAL Jake "The Cog" Cogburn into opening their third branch at Marine gunnery sergeant Daniel "Gunny" Tate and his daughter Rucker "RJ" Tate's Lost Valley Ranch dude ranch and bar near Fool’s Gold and Colorado Springs, Colorado only to find themselves both targets and immediately involved in a murder investigation.

Seal Salvation is book 1 in the new series Brotherhood Protectors Colorado by Elle James and a great start to this new series!

Hank Patterson knows he wants to expand his Brotherhood Protectors agency to Colorado and has found a ranch, now needs to show Jake Cogburn, former Navy Seal that his life is worth living even though he list his leg because of a IED. He helps to start getting the ranch set up and his first assignment is to watch over RJ the ranch owner’s daughter after she witnessed a murder.

RJ doesn’t believe she needs protection, she thinks her retired military dog is enough but Jake is determined to keep her safe regardless.

When things escalate can Jake keep her safe, find out who wants her dead and with all the sparks can they find a HEA also? Only time will tell....

SEAL Salvation is the first book in a spinoff series of The Brotherhood Protectors. It's edgy, suspenseful, humorous at times and steamy. Hank Patterson seems to have a sixth sense when it come to a friend in need. He taps Jake Cogburn to head up the Colorado branch of Brotherhood Protectors. Suddenly Jake has purpose, new friends and his first assignment. Someone seems bent on injuring or killing RJ Tate. She would not, in a million years, describe herself as girly. Yet Jake seems to bring out her feminine side. She's tough, feisty and no nonsense. Something about her calls to Jake but acting on that pull is not prudent. She is an assignment afterall. There's only one problem, she wants him just as much. But keeping her safe is the priority until they figure out a motive and find the suspect. Then, all bets are off.

Great read! Loved seeing the guys from previous series that hank runs for brotherhood protectors. They are setting up a branch in Colorado and they want Jake to head it up. Jake is broken and lost after losing a limb to an IED on deployment for the SEALs. He feels like he has nothing to offer. He just needed a purpose. RJ and her dad run the ranch where the new site plans to rent from. She is kick ass being raised by a gunnery Sargent and has recently adopted a retired military dog who lost a leg in an explosion. Loved striker!! There is a plot afoot to claim mine rights and someone is trying to kill rj after she witnessed a murder and almost died trying to stop it. Loved their connection. It was instant that they both found the other attractive. But insecurities on both sides made it slow going at first. Loved the story. Can’t wait for jojos book.

Hank Patterson runs the Brotherhood Protectors in Montana. He has brought together former special forces military personnel to work security and handle certain situations law enforcement and the military can't. Hank has decided to branch out into Colorado. He has nailed down a great location there and knows he wants ex-SEAL Jake Cogburn to run the operation. He just needs to get Jake onboard. Along the way Jake meets RJ Tate whose life he saves a time or two. A perfect set-up to fall in love?

I love Elle James Brotherhood Protectors series and I'm happy to see there will be more stories set in Colorado. This one is action-packed, explosions and bullets flying. I really like the two main characters RJ and Jake. Instant attraction is so much fun to watch develop.

Great first book in this new series. We have Kujo who goes out to Colorado to bring Jake out of his funk as Hank Patterson wants Jake to run a new chapter of the Brotherhood Protectors. He's really in no condition to do it, but as soon as he gets to the Lost Valley Ranch, he's all in. RJ, is an independent woman who just lives day to day, keeping up with her family business. A threat shows up on his first meeting at the farm and although they are both coming from a different background they are wary, and they each confirm that they are "confused". Ms. James always weaves a wonderful story for a reader to follow and they always make me feel good after reading one of her stories.
