A Secret in the Keys

Rate this book
All she wants is a second chance at life and love…and a beach house in the Keys.
The last thing Beck Foster wants to do is attend a party for her estranged aunt in the Florida Keys. One month earlier, Beck’s seemingly ideal existence imploded when her husband of thirty-four years announced he was leaving her. Now, so she has to sell her house, get a job, and somehow put her broken heart and life back together. She can’t do all that if she runs off to visit a woman she barely remembers.

Or can she?

Accompanied by her grown daughter who also longs for an escape, Beck heads to Coconut Key, where she’d lived the earliest years of her life. There, she forges a life-changing relationship with a woman she never really understood, dips her toes into the waters of a new romance, and begins the process of starting over.

But when a secret kept for nearly fifty years comes crashing down on them, all of Beck’s dreams are once again threatened. Can she forgive the lies that have shaped her life, or will the past ruin her chance at a new beginning in Coconut Key?

I thought it was cute and a fast read, but to me it felt a little soapopery and a lot cheesy. It’s good for a quick beach read, but then there is 6 of them lol and it just seems like a never stopping telenovela, with secret pregnancies and coming back from the dead lol. Very daytime television.

Now, this is a wonderful, delightful, enjoyable, engrossing beginning to a series. The plot is lit, the characters are like friends you meet at the beach and want to sit and chat with. The relationship between Lovely and Beck is central to this series (why do all the cold, hard-hearted, judgmental women named Mitchell?) and what unfolds on Coconut Key gives insight to family in its true dynamic. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series and head back to the Keys (physically) searching out Coconut Key.

I love romance and mistery, and how can I not love this book? Its exactly what I was looking for, a nice story with a mistery that helps you to stay awake and aware of everything, I want to reread already. I think is a book everybody could enjoy. I don't want to spoil but for me everything was a nice surprise.

Such a cute read. The characters are lively and so vivid I can see them. Just enough twists to keep the story from being predictable.

A new fresh voice is joining us with her debut book, A Secret in the Keys. I loved this story of new beginnings and family. It became a quick read for me as I was taken in by the author's words and could not put the book down.

Rebecca or Beck need to find a new path in her life. Her husband is divorcing her, and she has received an invitation to her Aunt’s celebration of life. An impromptu trip to Coconut Keys, where Beck grew up, is timely and just the change of scenery she needs. Her oldest daughter quickly organizes the trip before Beck can change her mind. Who she finds, and what she learns once she gets to the island, letting her know this is the correct path.

This book is the beginning of a series of stories about the friends and family on Coconut Key. I am looking forward to reading all of them.

This is a lovely short read. Something I could normally do in a day. However, I had to stop and resume several times because of grammatical errors. They were too distracting. I finally reached a point where my curiosity about the ending outweighed the errors. I will say it's a lovely story with plenty's of characters you will love. Hopefully with this having 6 books at my reading, the errors will be fewer.

I thought the book was very slow in the beginning and I struggled with reading. About halfway through the pace picked up and I enjoyed the remainder of the book with all the twists and turns. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Secrets Revealed and Loves Established

Hope Holloway’s A Secret in the Keys, book 1 of her Coconut Key series, introduces two families bound by the childhood friendship of the middle-aged women in both, Jessie Cross and Beck Foster. Beck is, she thinks, the niece of Lovely Ames, who lives in tiny Coconut Key next door to Coquina House, the large home she hasn’t lived in for years.
One day, while still in shock from her husband’s cheating, Beck receives an invitation to Lovely’s “celebration of life” on Coconut Key—no date or time, which is characteristic of Lovely. Beck’s late mother Olivia, rigid and judgmental, portrayed her younger sister as unreliable and cold (despite Beck’s happy memories of time with “Aunt Lovey” during her first 10 years), so the shock of receiving the invite, combined with the knowledge that she must sell the house where she and her ex raised three daughters, propels her to Coconut Key with her oldest child, responsible editor Peyton, whose live-in boyfriend is resisting her efforts to get married and have a family. The Ames/Foster women need to relax!
Coconut Key provides the atmosphere they both want, and Lovely, confined to a wheelchair after a major car accident, matches her name as well as Beck’s memories. But Lovely is hiding a secret from Beck and can’t find the right time to tell her. Beck’s middle child, Savannah, comes home unexpectedly from yet another trip (she’s a wanderer) with news of a pregnancy, and Coquina House begins to fill up. Beck and Lovely decide to turn it into a B&B, and Jessie’s brother Josh, a master woodworker, promises to make its furniture. (He also wants to fill Beck’s heart as well as the B&B, but she refuses to get close to him before her divorce is finalized. I’m sensing that storyline will continue in future books; there are 7 in the series.)
Savannah finds a pink envelope halfway under the broken dishwasher and gives it to Beck. It’s her original birth certificate stating that Lovely is her mother, not her aunt, and there’s also a contract stating that Lovely has sworn on a Bible never to tell Beck the truth of her parentage. Beck is livid and confronts Lovely, who breaks down and says she met Olivia during the near-death episode she experienced after the accident and was told to tell Beck the truth. Beck refuses to believe her, but later two of Lovely’s terriers run to her, and she realizes Lovely needs help.
Lovely, whose doctors and PTs say has no physical reason not to walk, tried to walk down the ramp Josh installed, tripped over her third terrier, and fell to the bottom. No near-death episode this time, just a coma that scares her worse. She can hear, though, so she vaguely understands being taken to a hospital and put on life support. The nurse allows Beck, who identified herself to the 911 dispatcher as Lovely’s daughter, to see her and tells her to talk to Lovely as if she can hear her, so Beck apologizes for her anger and tells a secret of her own: she also became pregnant in her teens and was forced by Olivia to give up the baby boy for adoption. She tells Lovely about the father and, after Lovely wakes up, asks about her own, who was a one-night stand Lovely barely knew in 1965 and can’t find. They decide not to seek him out.
At the party, during which Lovely walks around greeting her guests and Josh looks longingly at Beck, a teenage girl wanders in and says she’s Beck’s granddaughter. Yet another secret!
Hope Holloway’s setting is unparalleled—if it existed, I’d like to visit—and her living characters are, well, lovely! Highly recommended.

So you are enjoying your day and your husband and his partner are sitting at the table when they drop a bombshell of information on you. Your world has now turned upside down and what are you options.
You get a weird invitation to a celebration of life from an aunt who lives in the town you grew up in till you were 10 and asking you to attend the event. Why not go, even though your mom explained how horrible this woman was and every time you sent a card for birthday, Christmas you never heard back.
She did not even show up when you mother died for the funeral. She never sent wedding gifts or birthday cards to your kids or family so in thinking about why should you go.
Then your oldest daughter suggests that she needs a break and would you be willing to go to Florida (Since it's February) for two weeks to get outta the cold.
Ok so maybe not such a bad idea.
So from this point on nothing stays the same, everything is weird, things you have been told don't seem to connect to each other. You love being in the Keys but don't know if it is the right place for you. Taking it one day at a time we travel with Rebecca and her family as they unravel the yarn of this interesting blanket that surrounds them all.
Enjoy the journey, this book has been out for awhile so should be easy to find.

What a great debut series for Hope Holloway. This is the first of 6 books, all having the title ending with "the Keys". 1) A Secret in... 2) A Reunion in... 3) A Season in... 4) A Haven in... 5) A Return to... 6) A Wedding in.... Sounds like a recipe for some sweet summer beach reading. Light romance and an intriguing bit of mystery. Don't read the ending before its time, or at least not the very last page - you'll want to leave a little surprise for yourself. I'm looking forward to #2.

Each chapter is written from the perspective of three alternating characters: Beck, is a women whose 34 year marriage is ending and she travels to the Florida Keys to attend the life celebration of an estranged aunt. Peyton is Beck's grown daughter with personal issues of her own who accompanies her mother to meet this mysterious relative. Lovely Ames is the aged, infirm aunt with long-ago secrets and regretted promises that have affected the lives of her family. There are several other delightful characters with stories of their own that, I'm sure, will be more deeply revealed in the coming novels. Plus 3 cute dogs with oodles of personality.

Con - Can sometimes be a little sappy so I can definitely see this being on Hallmark someday. And I'll watch it.

This book captivated me from the beginning you connect with the characters straight away no matter their age and you feel the pull/push they go through. Beck is pretty much picking her life up and starting anew after a shocking split from her husband, the dynamics between her daughters are far and wide just like their personalities and deciding to pick up sticks and go see her estranged aunt turns out to be her first step in reclaiming her life. I just floved Coconut Key and everyone in it you get wrapped up in their feelings and want secrets to be unburdened and new relationships made, you will laugh loads, cry heaps, fist pump when great things happen and chew your lip not know what will come next at times. I can not wait for the next book in this series as I need to know what will happen next with everyone!!!!

I took off a star because of the ending. While not really a cliffhanger, it still didn’t quite wrap things up like I wanted. Added a new surprise with no more details on reactions. So of course you’re left wanting the next book. I love audiobooks and the narrator was great for this one. She does so many voices and sounds just like they should. Very talented.

This book was uplifting and made me want to go to the keys. It would make a great beach read. I loved the characters, except Beck’s husband. What a jerk. But looks like her pain will only lead to a bigger and better life in every sense. She also will grow closer to her daughters and learn new things about herself and who she thought she was. There are surprises and many new friends along the way. It opens up a new world and careers for her and daughters. I loved the daughter, Peyton. But I wish Greg would’ve found out and also seen Val. What a hotty. That would’ve showed Greg. I can’t wait to read or listen to the next one

This was super cheesy, but not in a bad way! Very cute characters and a gorgeous setting!

I would LOVE for someone to invite me to live down in the keys! Thats like my dream life!

I liked all the characters. I really liked Peyton and Val together. It was so annoying her trying to stay with Greg the whole time. I also loved Savannah even though she wasn’t in it that much.

I really thought something bad was going to happen at the end of this and I would have been so sad! But of course this had to have a happy ending.

I liked the way they said pink line while talking about the baby.

It is kind of funny they all got pregnant young. Not funny ha ha but funny interesting.

I LOVED the narrator for this audiobook! A must listen!

I will definitely be listening to the other books in this series at some point!

This is the first book I've rad by Hope Holloway and it won't be the last.

Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It's one of those books that you could spoil the book by telling to much in the review. So I will do my best to not spoil too much.

Beck's world has been turned upside down by her husband Dan of thirty four years asking for a divorce so he could marry his law partner who was about Beck's age. Beck's mom had a secret that she ended up taking to the grave with her.

Beck receives a letter from her Aunt Lovely in the keys inviting her to come there for a couple of weeks. Since she doesn't have a reason not too she does.

Check out the book and I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.

A new author. A promising new series that takes place in the Floida Keys. Beck is starting over after her husband of 34 years asks for a divorce.
Starting over is uncharted, but reconnecting with an estranged aunt and childhood friends helps shape her future plans. Discovering and sharing many secrets througout the story, and strengthening bonds with her daughters makes for a heart qarming story.
This promises to be a great, heart felt series full of great characters and life experiences!

A new-to-me author and a promising new series that takes place in the Florida Keys... I loved everything about this story! The characters were well developed and very relatable, the setting was exactly what I needed for the perfect summer read, and the storyline was right up my alley—very Hallmarky, full of family drama and high emotions. A Secret in the Keys is a beautifully written book about hope, love, friendship, and forgiveness. It’s a story of life struggles, family values, second chances, new beginnings, and triumph over adversity. Hope Holloway is now on my list of must-read authors and I am super excited about this series set in Coconut Key! Highly recommend!

This was an amazing book. I am hitting my thirty fourth anniversary, so I tried to put myself in her shoes. I loved the characters Beck is strong and more than capable. I enjoyed the interaction with her daughter. I was glad she was finding someone new, and I really loved her aunt. This book will have you running the gambit of emotions I cried, laughed, and cheered her on. This book is worth the time invested. This is a heart warming story of starting over that is told very well.

Interesting, well-rounded characters and set in balmy Coconut Key, Florida. We are introduced to Rebecca (Beck) Foster and her family in this sweet and clean little romance series. Beck is in the midst of a divorce from her cheating husband when she receives a invitation from the aunt she was close to but hasn’t seen since she was a 10-year old girl. With her eldest daughter along, they go to visit the aunt to find out why.

Life changes in more ways than one for Beck and her family in this first book. (I’ve already read book two and it was as good as the first! Quick, fun read!
