A Memory of Light was such a delightful read. The words flow beautifully with each page, the writing is full of vivid descriptions which completely captivated me. The story follows Ari, a young and fierce thief who lives in a hole in the forest with her loyal anima, Jagger. Ari isolates herself from society, which is engulfed in a civil war between the Malavi and the Zaerans. She only shows up for thieving gigs or other necessities. Due to her immense skills as a thief, a wealthy stranger seeks her out for a job that would help her pay off her debt.

One of my favorite elements of the story was the worldbuilding, I was intrigued from the very beginning to know more about the civil war and Ari's past. As I read my mind was burning with questions such as; Who was she before she was a thief? What happened to her parents? Why is she one of the few with anima? The animal companions concept was another of my favorite elements. I loved Ari's friendship with her bobcat and their dynamics was on point. You really feel like they are as one with their deep connection to each other.

Ari must venture with Ely to accomplish the task, these two are completely different from each other. Their dialogues and banter were the highlight of the story. I felt very proud of myself for being able to predict the ending, which will expose many secrets! A fun and adventurous fantasy!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a free copy! Rating 4.5 stars!

5 stars!

The first thing I have to say it: please go buy this book right now!

This is an incredible new start to a new adult fantasy series and it has everything you could possibly want in a fantasy book! There’s a heist/quest, an animal companion, magic, royalty, war, hidden identities and kick ass characters.

A Memory of Light follows Ari, an incredibly skilled thief and her anima bobcat Jagger in the midst of her country’s civil war. The life Ari has made for herself and Jagger is suddenly rocked when she has no choice but to accept a new job offer that takes her across the country with Ely, her new partner that she does not want.

This book is filled with exciting adventures, cut throat fighting scenes and wonderful banter between Ari and Ely! Honestly, Ari is such a strong female protagonist and Ely is such a loveable doofus.

The writing flows easily and feels completely immersive all throughout, you won’t want to put it down!

Overall a really exciting adventure and a great start to the series! After that ending, I cannot wait to see what the next book brings!

I don't usually read YA fantasy but when Author Allyson S. Barkley reached out offering to send me a copy of the first book in her Until the Stars Are Dead Series titled "A Memory of Light," I couldn't say no! The description of the story and the absolutely stunning cover instantly drew me in. Plus Allyson is a sweetheart!

This is a beautifully written novel with fantastic world building (there's a map!!), magical descriptions and great character development. The plot and storyline are well constructed, flow seamlessly and keeps the reader's interest starting on page one.

This was such a great read and I look forward to continuing Ari and Ely's adventures in more books in this series to come!

Book 1 (this one!) is available now! Thank you Allyson for the opportunity to read and review your book!

A MEMORY OF LIGHT is a little gem in the world of YA fantasy, and one I’m grateful to have crossed paths with. What’s this story about, you ask? Well, the story follows Ari and Ely. The former is a thief with many secrets who lives in the forest with her faithful anima (aka her bobcat. who is the love of my life), Jagger. The latter is a sorcerer—a little awkward when it comes to his magic, but with far better people skills than Ari and a complete cinnamon roll. This unlikely pairing must work together in the search for an artifact that is perhaps Ari’s hardest job yet, and one that may force her to face the many secrets of her past. Want to know more? You’ll have to read the book!

The frame for A Memory of Light is a civil war, which is something I thoroughly enjoy in a fantasy because it allows to expand a lot on the human aspects of world-building. The one in this book didn’t disappoint in the slightest! We got great background on the political situation, but it never overshadowed the main plot or weighed down the narration. If anything, it only fed my curiosity because I have a feeling it will play a much bigger role in the future books.

A Memory of Light adopts many elements common in a YA fantasy: an unlikely duo, civil unrest, a heroine who prefers knives to pretty dresses, but the author makes them completely her own. The writing was descriptive without ever overdoing it, and it was so easy to just lose myself in the narration and the rich world. A special mention goes to the bond between Ari and Jagger. I loved the concept of the anima! Animal companions are one of my favorite elements of any book, and the deep union of souls between Jagger and his girl was a joy to read.

As always, the characters are a large reason why I enjoy a book, and I admit to having fallen completely in love with Ari and Ely. Though Ari has many mysteries, I never felt like the author was holding back in letting the reader get to know her. Her strengths, her beliefs, her insecurities shine throughout the story and make her a character that is easy to connect and relate to.
Ely was a wonderful surprise! I’m used to having the broad-shouldered, broody/sassy heartthrob in my fantasy, but Ely was the sort of sweet, supportive, headstrong cinnamon roll that I’d love to meet in real life. Please world, give us more Ely’s!

Though romance wasn’t very present in this installment, I do not lose hope for the future. I have many theories and many hopes for the next installments, and I cannot wait for the next book. Which only leaves one more question: when is the sequel releasing? *she asked, knowing the first book only just released*

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy! All opinions are my own.

My mother likes to say that hope is not simple, but it is worth the work. The beautiful moments are what carry us through the ugly, aren’t they?”

5 stars:

Add this one to you TBR, friends. It’s fantastic.

I stayed up wayyy too late two nights in a row to binge this book. I couldn’t stop reading. And when I had to stop reading, my mind wandered back to Ari and Jagger and Ely. I absolutely adored this book. Let me go ahead and make this bold claim...if you like Throne of Glass or Dance of Thieves, you will love A Memory of Light !

Ari, our main character, is fierce, independent (to a faulty, I’d say), and a force to be reckoned with. I, unfortunately, found myself relating to her “I can do it myself” attitude and her reluctance to accept help from other people. I say “unfortunately” because these are qualities I’d like to work on, but it certainly was refreshing to find someone like me as the main character of this book. I’m gonna say that Ari is an enneagram 5...

I absolutely loved the relationship between Ari and her anima (bonded animal companion), Jagger. It’s incredibly special and this sort of relationship felt unique to most fantasy series I’ve read. Normally you’d see this type of bond with a “mate” (think SJM), but here you see a bonded relationship between a girl and her bobcat. They can read each other’s emotions and sense what the other is feeling...and I loved it. My dog, for example, always knows how I’m feeling and can sense my emotions. Maybe he’s my anima? Idk. I’m going to claim it.

Ely was an absolutely cinnamon roll. I think he’s more complex than we’re led to believe in this book and I cannot wait to see how he develops in book 2. Also, because I’m that person, I’m hoping for a budding romance in book 2. I can’t help it. I ship.

The author says she’s working on book two edits and we can hopefully expect it early in 2022...and I’m just over here hoping for a miraculous end of 2021 release because I NEEED MORE ARI, ELY, AND JAGGER!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A strong 4 stars!

I picked up A Memory of Light and could not put it down. I finished this in one sitting!

It has a badass MC, a cool bobcat sidekick, and a world filled with lots of magical creatures like mermaids and unicorns!

The writing style was fantastic and the story had an even pace throughout, which was nice because fantasy books have a tendency to drag in the beginning and have everything happen all at once at the end.

I also liked that the MCs were in their early twenties because there was a maturity level that we don't usually see in fantasies that feature teenagers.

Definitely pick this book up! It hasn't even officially come out yet and I'm already ready for the sequel :)

A memory of light was a fantastic read. You are quickly immersed in a magical world that is slowly loosing it's enchantment as the Malavi and Zaeran power struggle take its toll on the environment and its inhabitants alike. Ari’s journey takes you across beautifully written landscapes as she travels with her companion bobcat Jagger. You won't be able to put the book down as her forced companionship with Ely and mission become intertwined with her unraveling past that has implications for everyone in the Kingdom.

This book is a beautiful fantasy gem.

The first time I read this book’s synopsis, I was hit with Throne of Glass vibes and I felt that I would love this book. I wasn’t wrong, and I’m very happy about it. Thieves, magical creatures, adventure. This book had everything I like in my fantasy reads!

A Memory of Light follows Ari, an expert thief who keeps to herself if not for her bobcat companion, Jagger. Ari makes it her prerogative that nobody knows who she is and where to find her, but suddenly a mysterious employer reaches out for a job that apparently only she can do. Ari doesn’t want to accept, but refusing this job could put her at an even greater risk than sitting it out. She’s forced to work with Ely, a young man and secret magician who is the opposite of Ari. Where she’s mysterious and broody, he’s all sunshine and positivity. An odd pair forced together on a journey that proves more dangerous by the moment. On this note, I found it very refreshing to have the female protagonist be the brooding one and the male to be the sweeter one.

As I mentioned above, I love adventurous stories set in magical worlds. Ari, Jagger and Ely made for a fun team to follow through this world divided by two warring factions. The worldbuilding was very interesting, in regards to both the politics and the magic. I especially appreciated the concept of anima, which is an animal companion bonded with a human on a soul-deep level. I loved it!

I found the plot to be engaging, with the right amount of mystery and action. There was a small part of the story where things seemed to slow down a little, but that’s completely normal for a fantasy and overall the pacing was great.

Lovers of fantasy will surely enjoy this, especially if you like stories with an adventure plot like Throne of Glass and A Darker Shade of Magic.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy. Opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy to read! All opinions are my own.

First off I would like to say that this book actually gave me all of the Tamora Pierce feels. It reminded me a lot of her Immortals series with the animal aspect and the magic. Tamora Pierce is who really got me into reading as a young reader and young adult.

If you are a fan of fantasy and world building, you will enjoy this book! Our protagonists is Ari and her lovely animal companion, Jagger. I’ve seen it mentioned a few times and I have to agree that I felt it refreshing that Ari seemed to be the more brooding and troubled character in the series and her male companion, Ely, was the sweet and bubbly one. It isn’t something you normally see done and it was nice to see developed.

The anima magic being bonded with an animal companion is probably one of my fav parts of the book. I love animals and animal companions in books. Being bonded with Jagger, Ari can communicate emotionally and vice versa which is super interesting to me.

I also appreciate the whimsy side to this story. There are tons of magical creatures including mermaids and unicorns. If you know me, mermaids are my love.

Heist anyone? I actually enjoy heists in books and in a fantasy book? Epic! It really has everything you could want with all the tropes. What a great start to a fantasy series! I just wish I could be a mermaid and also have my own anima now.

This was a quick, light read but will still leave you thinking (if that make sense 😂). It was a quick and light read because how it was written, it was very descriptive that can be easily followed and you don't need to reread sentences or paragraphs again. However, this made my mind walk all through possibilities. 'I got so much what if's', which I liked ☺️

Ari and Ely were too cute. I mean, it's full of action and stuff, but them being together was a perfect match. They're basically opposite, but still worked. Plus, Jagger! It was a brilliant idea! Having an anima in this story (don't want to giveaway so much deets 😂but Ari reminded me of Arya Stark 🥰and The Cliffs reminded me of The Wall 😊)

The fight scenes sometimes confuses me tho (not all of them), I just need to reread them so I can imagine them and be on the scene, but the rest was easily absorbed by my imagination. Especially the magical creatures! I was smiling everytime I came across them 🤩, some of them were- Nymphs and Mermaids 🤯

I just need a little bit more background stories from the side characters and that ENDING was definitely a cliffhanger, but there's a SECOND BOOK coming! So i'm much more excited about it.

OH AND THERE'S A MAP!

There's a map! So you know it's legit... The world-building in this book is amazing, and you understand that there's an entire history far beyond what the author reveals in this story. Everything from the natural biomes to the small towns to the big cities shows a unique influence of the author that is different from most fantasy books, keeping things fresh. The idea of animal companions has been around forever, and yet this book makes it seem like it's the only time it's ever been done because the relationship between Ari and her bobcat soul partner, Jagger, is so well-written and developed. The detail is ASTOUNDING! (Also, I learned a lot about horses and horseback riding which was a cool bonus!)

What a fun first book!

I loved Ari, Ely and Jagger. I'm excited to see where things go in book two.

I only wish there was more time spent on the actual heist and getaway, rather than their journey to the city.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

This book is so beautifully descriptive and you can tell that it’s setting the stage for events in the next few books. I would describe this book as a journey and there is lots of travelling through different parts of the world setting.
.
I honestly don’t know what I was expecting but the writing style is up there with some of my favourite authors.
.
I don’t want to give too much away but I would describe it as young adult fantasy genre with elements of adventure and mystery. There’s unicorns and so many other magical elements and I just loved it so much being transported to this magical world. There are a few mysterious characters id love to know about in the next book. I loved the ending and the hints throughout the book. I would definitely recommend to fans of young adult fantasy.

This story doesn’t start off slow. I was invested by page one! The world is very well described making it easy to see the land and surroundings inside your mind. Also, love that there’s a map to refer to! I would follow along with them on their journey through the map.
The characters Ari and Ely are great. I do wish Ely had some more umph to him, as I feel like he lets Ari kind of walk all over him. I also had to (in the beginning of meeting Ely) remind myself that he wasn’t a child and in fact a 20-something year old man. (I think he’ll find his umph soon though ♥) I really enjoy the two of them together!
The story is also full of whimsical creatures! Like Unicorns & mermaids. It’s absolutely wonderful when they come into play. I’m excited for more encounters with these, and other creatures as the story continues.
The fact that Ari has a friend Bobcat, named Jagger, is also an amazing part of the story. I’m so envious of Ari and Jaggers friendship, love, and connection that they share.
I want my own anima!
I’m really looking forward to book two, and jumping back into this world!

With a patient and engaging pace, the author carefully reveals her characters and the world they occupy. At their introduction, the main characters seem to be a mismatched pair - Ari's outward strength and unique skills are set against Ely who appears overly optimistic and nearly hapless. Jagger, the anima bobcat, is quietly the real barometer of the characters' true nature, the pairs' developing relationship, and the danger they must ultimately face together. The story never disappoints and along the way we are treated to beautiful scenery and loads of terrific action. This will be a great read for anyone who is looking for a somewhat norm breaking protagonist set against the backdrop of deep personal challenge, plenty of hard choices, and mortal threat. The author makes all of this work, weaving together a wonderful adventure that left me anxiously waiting to find out what happens next to Ari, Eli, and Jagger on their journey together.

A Memory of Light is an exciting and compelling read. The story is incredibly well-paced, and it hooks you from the first page to the last. It develops gradually, with details and nuances providing exciting foreshadowing of what’s to come. The story takes the reader on a journey through multiple terrains and environments. The descriptions are illustrative but not overdone; they transport you into Ari and Ely’s world and perspectives. Ari and Ely are wonderfully complementary protagonists. Ari is fiercely independent and not one to ever show weakness. Her softer side is primarily revealed through her relationship with animals, particularly her anima Jagger. Ely is open, kind, and patient. His optimism counterbalances Ari’s pessimism. Both are characters who bring depth and history into the story and continue to develop on their adventure together. Can’t wait for book 2!

Although I generally don’t read a lot of fantasy literature, I really enjoyed A Memory of Light. The author did an amazing job of developing her main characters. It’s wonderful to see them evolve. The author also does a spectacular job of describing the landscape and more on Ari’s magical, and often harrowing journey. And lastly, who wouldn’t love to have an anima like Jagger! I can’t wait to hear what happens next to Ari and Ely!

I could not put this book down! Ari is a brave, independent, feisty, inspiring female protagonist. Every character brings their own unique and purposeful contribution to the storyline, and Ari and Ely's strong bond is palpable. I also love the author's inclusion of such vivid, detailed imagery of each landscape in Ari's journey. The writing and the inclusion of the map really allows the reader to visualize Ari's world and join in on the adventure. I can't wait for the next book of the series!

What a stunning debut. Is this really Barkley's first book? Because she sure writes like a seasoned veteran. The descriptive imagery alone is incredible... every new location you go to, you don't just see it, you feel it. Talk about writing all five senses. This makes the world feel lush and alive, crafted with detail and care. Fans of Tolkien will certainly enjoy it because it's the kind of book where you just gotta let yourself bask in the writing. Of course, Barkley knows not to spend 5 pages on one blade of grass... but it's the same kind of love for language and setting that I honestly needed to appreciate more.

And what of the characters? Ari is fierce, independent, and emotionally unavailable. An absolute badass whose arc has nothing to do with ability and everything to do with empathy. Sometimes, I'll admit, she was frustrating, but I understood exactly why she was the way she was, and it made seeing those small moments where she starts to open up so much more rewarding.

Then again, I'm also biased because... I love Ely. He's the polar opposite of Ari, the "sunshine boy" to her "grumpy girl" (but don't be fooled, this isn't a romance... yet?) whose repeated attempts to get to know her are thwarted by her monosyllabic tendencies. I think I was frustrated because he was frustrated, and Ari could be very unfair to him... but he was the perfect foil, her irritation made perfect sense with her character, and watching them learn to work together and grow closer was, again, that much more rewarding.

Honestly, I think I (and others) could learn a thing or two about writing "slow burn" from this. The characters are nuanced but consistent, the story patient and deliberate. It moves at a slower pace than I usually go for, but if you're an epic fantasy fan (again, think Tolkien) this will feel like a high-speed rollercoaster in comparison. I mostly suspect that any perceptions I had of the pacing are largely subjective. The story does move in a clear trajectory, and though much of it is a travelogue, the payoff once they get to their destination is an exciting contrast. Again, this one is for the language and setting lovers... but expect to become attached to some characters too, and possibly also to a bobcat.

I kept hearing REALLY good things about this book so I'm so glad I finally got to read it!
I was pleasantly surprised that it had all sorts of creatures. Nymphs, mermaids, animal companions, magic, secrets, unicorns, an epic quest, grumpy/ sunshine.
Ari, our fierce female MC was the grumpy! She's full on grumps.
Ely is our sunshine mage. I love him. Their strange and reluctant companionship ends up having some sweet moments!
And Jagger. I think her stole the show! I want a bobcat companion!!
I love the "cover" plot of the book which is a heist, but ooooh boy you get hit with the actual plot which in reality is much deeper!

4.5 stars—A valiant debut novel, and a rare new adult fantasy! I loved Ari and Ely and would obviously do anything for Jagger. I really liked how the character archetypes were unique for the genre (lovable grump girl and cinnamon roll guy) and how even though there was a lot of traveling (a la LOTR) there was still plenty of action and a little bit of magic. And of course there was just a little hint of romance, enough to keep my interest but no cliches or eye-rolling moments here. I cannot wait for the sequel!!

Really a 4.5/5, but I round up :)

I picked up A Memory of Light on a whim when I was looking for something relatively short and easy to read. What I assumed was going to be a “whatever” book, turned into a real page turner that I truly looked forward to reading each day on my commute.

I found Ari and Ely to be fun and lovable characters. I enjoyed how the author introduced the various elements of the world subtly throughout the book, rather than the dull early chapters you get in most fantasy novels. I thought Ari and Jag’s connection was a fun new way to do animal companions. My only complaint is that I was not crazy about how the book ends - it was by no means “bad,” but I wanted something different.

I don’t typically bother writing any reviews (since I’m not very good at writing reviews, as you can probably tell), but I figured I would take the time on this one. As I said, this was a surprisingly enjoyable read. I was very happy to find out this book comes from a young new author. She is clearly a talented writer and I’m eager to see where this series goes.

This story is one of these stories that make you fall in love with reading all over again! It was such a fun and addicting read! I read this one in a 24 hour readathon and I couldn’t have chosen a more perfect book to lighten up my mood! I absolutely loved this world and these characters!

In the beginning of the book we meet Ari, a strong badass female character who is offered an unexpected job offer from a stranger which results in her leaving her quiet life behind and beginning a new journey.

If you don’t already know, badass female characters are my weakness and also my favorite thing to read about! And Ari is now one of my favorites! Absolutely love her strong character and fierce personality! Besides the gorgeous characters we meet in this book, we also get to see a beautiful supernatural element. This book has everything you look for in the YA genre. Absolutely amazing!

The writing style is very beautiful and descriptive and the plot is really quick paced. And the endingggg!!! The plot twist blew my mind and I need the second book ASAP!!

I highly recommend this to everyone who loves the YA genre; it’s so much fun and full of action and intrigue! You should definitely check it out!

Note: Thank you to the author for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!
