Alex Vane #4

The Shadow File

Rate this book
America's intelligence security is in the hands of a million private contractors. Now one woman may bring down their entire system.

Four months ago, Alex Vane lost his friend James Stacy, killed by private security contractors working for the intelligence-industrial complex. Though Alex exposed the killers, most of the system survived, including the amoral torturer known only as Amand. Now, he and others continue to operate a web of security companies worldwide, off the record and accountable to no law.

James's widow Innerva Shah is taking a different route to her revenge. From within Cuba's internet desert, she has quietly penetrated the system of contractors that run America's security. Now she's launching the largest ransomware attack in history, with the aim of burning that system to the ground.

When he learns that Amand and his forces may be closing in on Innerva, Alex makes a desperate attempt to save her. With Innerva's surrender-or-die deadline only hours away, Alex finds himself in Cuba, threatened from every direction, and the only person he can count on is the wife he almost lost.

Disappointed.

Reasons for one star is; like to read and understand every word author wrote. But after trying to translate with Google translate about dozen times, finally gave up. Don't know Spanish.
Alex Vane is owner of internet media company, but again and again admits, he doesn't know much about computers, just addicted to his smartphone. He can't even to remember to charge it.
In this age you can't buy a one way airplane ticket to any foreign country, especially to Cuba.
Story is about malware attack on private contractors companies, expose what everything they do.

I read another good book this one made the time fly bye. This book you could maybe read as a stand alone but I advise to read any series in order including this one. I liked the main and secondary characters as well as the bad guy. The story made sense was it plausible???????????? but who really cares in a thriller. The first two books in this series were really good but the third book dropped off somewhat but this book was almost back up to speed. the dialogue was good, the ending was good and it was a fluid read. I will read the next book and hopefully not the last one in the series and I do say go out and give this one a spin.

Alex Vane and his wife are working together which is a wonderful change. I enjoyed seeing them as a struggling couple attempting to right the problems we saw in the last books.
Innerva has come back and so has Amand. There is a very intricate plot that Goes hand in hand with all the action, danger, and suspicion.

I loved the detail about Cuba. The people and places gave me a real feeling for how the country has been crumbling in the last fifty years. Even with danger and suspense, there was a lovely sub story.

AC Fuller has created Alex Vane and made him so real to me. When I read book 1 I liked this pompous and ambitious character, now I appreciate him for all his interior doubt and insecurity.

These characters have layers and I love peeling them back one book after the other. This is a series you will enjoy. Standalone is good but book 1-4 is even better. There are hackers, revenge, the CIA, and Alex.

I dind't enjoy this book very much, I was not totally in the book. The story didn't keep my attention high and I lost interest many times. I found myself finally intrigued when the book was almost over. Just because I did not enjoy this book does not mean that others won’t, however.

First person tech-adventure that takes readers into Cuba in search of a notorious hacker who threatens to deliver ransomware into key US servers.
It's an intelligent, well-paced novel full of action that's definitely worth reading.

I really enjoyed this book on "revenge". Alex Vane does it his way, and James' widow is doing it her way. Both have the same target....Amand. This is a very well written thriller and the fourth in a series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book. The review is my own opinion.

Information as a Weapon.

This is the fourth Alex Vane novel I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. I just figured out that I somehow failed to post a much-deserved 5-star review of The Inverted Pyramid, but did manage to encourage readers to check out the other two.
On a timeline, it closely follows The Mockingbird Drive, and I highly recommend that you read Mockingbird Drive first.
The main theme is focussed on the use of private security to achieve a kind of power much more destructive than assuming control of a country’s nuclear launch codes. Knowing that Allied Regional Data Security (ARDS) had murdered her husband, hacker Innerva Shah is out for revenge, and on the verge of releasing a flood of information that would make Wikileaks look like a minor gossip column lost in the middle of a major newspaper. ARDS wants her dead, and Alex Vane ends up in the middle.
If you enjoy the Alex Vane series, you should also check out the Will Finch novels by D. F. Bailey, which also makes use of the theme of what journalism may well look like in the years (if not months) to come.

Innerva Shah (James' lover/business partner, NUM, aka _ni8htmare_, B1T(1) was the #1 hacker in the whole wide world.
Seattle, WA. Alex Vane CEO/Sr. editor of The Barker has a hard time controlling that.
Greyson Systems the Midwest's largest network security co. had been tapped into by The Freedom Collective.
1 demand for them shut down within 72 hrs. or else.
James Stacy (Alex’s BMF/business partner, Next Underground Media NUM, former The New York Standard, investigative journalist) & 5 others had been brutally gunned down at The Las Vegas Gazette.
Advanced Regional Data Security (ARDS) was responsible for the assassinations.
Only the sniper was shot/killed. All the others that might been involved were never found out or prosecuted.
Innerva had helped Alex piece the puzzle together about James murder.
She had since disappeared from the face of the earth.

Mia (The Barker receptionist) forwarded a call to Alex.
ARDS was on the line.
It was Amand Oliveto (ARDS owner, former CIA op).
Occidental Park. What did Amand & Alex meet about?
A courier had dropped off an envelope with Greta (Alex’s wife).
Alex/her read the letter.
Alex & Greta landed safely at the Havana, Cuba airport.
They were staying at the Casa Remedios.
Maria brought James a very urgent letter.
Bosque de la Habana (forest recreational area) Delfino & Seleste were there to meet with Alex & Greta.

I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a very well written techno thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great techno thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; Vivid Books; Amazon Digital Services LLC.; book

In this story, Alex and his wife Greta have reconciled, but as a part ot the arrangment to reconcile, Alex has promised to stay away from dangerous adventures. This seems like a good arrangement until he gets a letter through a courier from Innerva. Innerva, a former colleague has been on the run and is threatening to declare revenge on all the people that killed James, a mutual colleague. Innerva is a world class hacker, so she has a capability to do so.

At the moment, however, she is in hiding in Cuba and has sent the letter asking for Alex's help. As hard as it would be to turn down Innerva, he had his agreement with his wife. Greta also knows Innerva (or at least of her through Alex) and understands why this would be a difficult decison. In the end, they both go to Cuba where Greta is a big help Alex as she has excellent Spanish language skills.

Thusly, both Alex and Greta find themselves endangered by the mafia, common thugs and the thoroughly despicable Amand.

So, if you like intrigue, unpredictable situations, hair raising tensions and a well written plot this book is for you. If you haven't read AC Fuller's other books in this series, that will not deminish your enjoyment of the Shadow File. I must warn you, however, that if you are not familiar with the Alex Vane stories, you are in great danger of being addicted by reading this one. I highly recommend this book

"It always starts with a knock at the door ..."
Journalist and CEO of the online news site, the Barker, Alex Vane, immediately thinks of the superb hacker, Innerva Shah when he learns that that a malicious software attack has been made on an independent security company. Only months before, Alex's friend and Innerva's lover had been murdered with five others in an apparently random shooting. But it had not been random, he had been targeted and the man behind it had escaped completely. Innerva had vowed revenge. Now she was about to make her threat reality.

This fourth book in the very high powered series of journalistic thrillers continues the tensions and excitement of the earlier stories. With characters so realistically portrayed, they feel like people known to the reader, this story transports us with Alex and his recently reunited wife, Greta, to Cuba with all of the colour and atmosphere pouring from the pages. They are looking for Innerva, trying to save her life at the risk of their own, and are, in turn, pursued by the powerful and unscrupulous Armand.

A simply stunning series, well worth reading from the beginning. But each book does stand alone. So if you are looking for an intelligent, fast paced and well written thriller where conspiracy intrudes and what is right is not always clear, look no further.. This book is fantastic.

Alex Vane is the head of an internet news/fake news site. He was tortured earlier by the head of a security contract company who works by their own rules; his best friend was killed during that escapade, and the friend's woman vowed revenge. This book starts with the head security coming to Alex, threatening all sorts of mayhem if Alex doesn't give up the woman - Alex hasn't heard from Innerva except once, right after the death. Innerva is a top-rate hacker, and she's developed a program to bring down all of the security contract companies who step over the legal lines in the name of "National Security." Alex gets airplane tickets for he & his wife to go to Cuba to meet Innerva - hmmm, suspicious! And the security company guys just happen to be in Havana, and they try to trap Alex - hmmm.

Alex was too wishy-washy for me. He couldn't figure anything out (thank goodness he had his wife with him). I liked the premise of the story, but it was too .... something, and Alex turned me off.

The Shadow File is the fourth book in the Alex Vane Media Thriller series. If you are looking for a well written thriller then this series is for you. This is a standalone without a cliffhanger. But it will make more sense if you have read the previous book, The Mockingbird Lane. I enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. There is violence.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all info here. The author did a great job of explaining what is going on and describing the setting of the story. There is background given on the characters so the story makes sense for new readers. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. It definitely kept me riveted all the way to the end. I look forward to reading more of AC Fuller's books.

I received a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave a review for other readers.

Alex Vane’s friend was killed by private contractors working for an intelligence-corporate conglomerate. Alex exposed the killers, but the system survived, as did the man directly responsible for his friend’s murder. Now, his friend’s widow, an expert hacker, is threatening to bring down the entire government private security contractor system if they do not comply with her demands. She asks Alex to come to Cuba to help her, where he finds himself conflicted. While he knows that some in the system are corrupt, he doubts the wisdom or rightness of destroying the entire system to punish them.
Shadow File by A. C. Fuller is a compelling read that, while fictional, is all too close to how some of the private government contractors work in real life. Heart-pounding action on almost every page. A worthwhile read.

Alex Vane is back and he's got bad guys messing with him again. I was so glad to see the shadowy master-hacker, Innerva Shah, front and center in this one. Her promise at the end of the previous book in the series, that (the big bad guy) "Amand will not bother you again," is promptly broken via a surprise ransomware attack followed by a phone call from Amand who wants Alex to put him in touch with Innerva. And then the plot thickens. Innerva gets Alexa and his wife Greta to Cuba where they find themselves on a road trip across the island that wraps the whole dangerous plot in tropical intrigues. Kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved the computer-geeky parts of this media thriller and learned a few new things, as I always do in a Fuller book. I sure hope there are more Alex Vanes coming!

Another smash hit by AC Fuller

You never really know how much a book character affects you until something happens to them in the story line and you are overcome with emotions on what will happen next. A.C. Fuller does it again with another spectacular book in the Alex Vane series. From page one, The Shadow File takes you on a heart-pounding journey with a complex and thought-provoking story and cast of characters. There is a never a dull moment in this book, and Fuller’s ability to write scenes and dialogue transports the reader right into the middle of the action. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Alex next and also to read his new series, Ameritocracy Book 1: Open Primary (I have it already pre-ordered!).

Thank you, AC Fuller, for another spellbinding read. Love your books.

This was a good book, a page turner, fun to read and with lots of action and a few unexpected twists.

However, there were two things which slightly lowered my rating.

The most important was the inconsistency in communications between Alex and Innerva. Most of the time she is quiet, one may say introverted - uses words (both written and spoken) rather sparingly, while at one point she is writing almost an essay describing part of her story, which we don't know from the Alex' perspective. No spoilers here, but for me, this was a big mismatch in that character's design, also considering the moment, physical and likely mental condition she was in when writing those words.

Other than that, there were few rather unrealistic moments, which might be suited for an action movie, but didn't fit the book very well (kidnapping, car chase).

Still, it was a good leisure read

The Shadow File

I had read the Alex Vane novella and liked it, then found this one as a promo. Wow, did I miss a lot in the first three books! However, the story here managed to weave in enough of the high points from the previous books that I wasn’t lost. The characters are good and the story flows well. You get the feeling that you are right there with them. The action is very well written, places are believable, and it is a good thriller. Now to go back and get the other books.

A Real hearts topper!

As I started to read this book I was intrigued by the story line. Could someone really hack into the computers worldwide of security companies and seize control while threatening to disclose sensitive files and videos then compromise their IT networks? Could unsavory scenarios be revealed that complex organizations need to remain secret? Scenarios that would reveal shocking illegal actions taken by said organizations? This book was so engrossing that I couldn't put it down-I read it in one sitting. Spellbinding!

The Shadow File, the fourth book in the Alex Vane Media series, almost entirely takes place in Cuba, where Alex follows his old friend and master hacker, Innerva, to help avenge James' death—and surprise! Greta goes with him. It's a good thing, too, because Greta speaks Spanish—who knew? What follows is lots of cat-and-mouse-spy-type action where Alex and Greta repair their marriage as they rely on each other to stay alive. Fast-paced and entertaining, I enjoyed this romp into the cyber world where nobody is anybody without a computer and internet.

This is the fourth book in the Alex Vane Media Thriller series. This book is so well written with a strong storyline and complex characters. The book is fast paced and action packed. The Shadow File (Alex Vane 4)by A.C. Fuller was a good read. A fast paced page turner from start to finish. Interesting and unusual characters, but believable. Good story-line and plot, could happen in the real world today. Plenty of action. I enjoyed it but I'm not sure if I would want to read it again. I may read something else by this author and then decide if I will add him to my favored authors list.

Another fun book in this series! I enjoyed reading about Alex Vane's struggles with killers who mean him and others harm. I just love mystery books in general. And when they're written well with great characters and good plot twists it just makes me smile. This book by AC Fuller makes me smile :)

This book is so good. I really appreciated how much Alex Vane has grown as a person in this story. He is more thoughtful and self-aware than in his previous books and I enjoyed seeing how much his marriage has grown. That aside the book is fast paced and I love the conundrums he faces as the plot thickens. You will not be disappointed in the least. I couldn't put it down.

Good

Fast-paced political thriller that kept me reading to the end. The setting in Cuba was interesting and there were enough twists and turns and shadowy figures to keep me engaged. I don't understand all the techno stuff, but it's written in a way that doesn't go entirely over my head.

This is a creative series that has found a way to combine old school newspapering with today's digital world and media websites. There is an excellent blending of having to "get the story right" before it is published with the passive guilt of including some articles on a site to simply attract eyeballs. I look forward to the author's future works.

OK story, but there's too much waiting around. In the first half of the book, there was a lot of rehashing of what had happened in the earlier books in the series waiting for something to happen. In the second half of the book, there was still a lot of waiting, worrying and wondering what was happening while Alex and his wife were hiding.
