After reading the book They Say, I Say, I found myself questioning a lot of what I had been taught in school up to this point. This book is not exactly a how-to. The text begins by introducing the "complicated moves" that will make you a better writer. Instead of listing things one could do to improve, the authors have included specific templates and examples. This is a big help for individuals who need further detail on the topics. The templates give examples of text quoted in the book and a model for use in their writing. Each section also has an activity to complete that will aid you in improving your skills. Overall, this book is full of information that gives the reader more detail on what they need to work on to become a better writer.

This book is long. Full of templates and vocabularies you can write your paper with.

Although it was produced before ChatGPT, it is still of value. You can find language for supporting, rejecting ideas, elaborating, acknowledging weaknesses.

The author makes a compelling argument. Templates are not to replace creativity, but to boost creativity. For starters, they advise using templates. Later on, they suggest writing your own words.

What I love about the book is its underlying approach: They say, I say. Essentially, it means we are writing not to ourselves. We answer other people, scholars; we join ongoing conversations.

4 out of 5. It’s a bit long with some repetition.

An excellent resource that teaches the moves in academic writing across all disciplines. I'm working on my second master's degree (M.A. English), so I think I am a good writer. This book changed my perspective and made me recognize writing mistakes I've been making my whole life. Academic writing is far from what we learn in K-12, so implementation of these strategies is daunting and uncomfortable. To ease this, the authors provide writing templates to act as training wheels. One day when I'm a professor of composition, this will likely be my textbook.

Teaches how to write an academic paper in a way that does not rely on students' previous experience (which they may not have) as writers, readers, or bearers of general knowledge.
