don’t know about other people but as the seasons turn hot, my reading tastes change. They become a little bit moodier, a little bit darker. I doubt I’m the only one, given how many thriller and horror novels. But what if you don’t want to pick up a thriller? What if you’re a dedicated fantasy reader who wants to walk on the darker side? That’s where dark fantasy short stories books like Into the Macrocosm: Short Stories of the Dark Cosmic, Bizarre, and the Fantastic comes in. The definition of dark fantasy can be hard to pin down. It’s not synonymous with horror, but there can be overlap. In fact, fantasy novels written by horror authors often get categorized as dark fantasy. The stories here are the raw heart of Konn Lavery. They are the spells that first drew me and all the numerous admirers of his work with whom I am acquainted into Konn Lavery’s luminous and captivating web.

I must say , normally I would read whole novels but found the short stories gripping. I love the authors way of writing, it was fluid, descriptive, and so well written. As they were short stories, ended up reading one a night before bed time. Not really a good thing as some of the stories played on my mind, which I suppose was the whole purpose of the stories. Some were complex, others quite funny, but also some very creepy. Such a good mix of genres, if you like Tales of the Unexpected and the Twilight Zone you will love these stories. Looking forward to the next thrilling book.......Maybe next time I will sleep with the light left on!!!

All told, a really interesting collection from an up-and-coming writer who is clearly invested in the genre. Pick it up and you won't be disappointed.

"Into the Macrosom" is the child of Konn Lavery's latest book. It takes all the short stories he wrote over the past three years and intelligently weaves them together into one book. He does this by introducing a new character that the reader is (since the book is in second person). The Nameless One goes on a journey throughout the book to find out who they are.

We'll call the good ol' nameless one N.O. for short. N.O. meets a familiar face in what is called the Midway, Malpherities, the ghoul from Lavery's first novel series, "Mental Damnation". The Midway is a nightmarish realm, filled with swirling clouds of the horrific faces of the victims it has claimed. There, Malpherities tries to help N.O. find out their identity by taking a mysterious black liquid from a bowl and dropping it into N.O.'s eye - this take N.O. on a ride through each one of the short stories as the main character.

A few standout shorts from "Into the Macrosom" that I loved:

-"Scrappers"(which also intertwines with the "Harvesters" chapter); a very Alien-esque story of apocalyptic future-kin, who can't seem to escape a dark fate they were born into. Classism meets tension meets futurism
-"Listen to Me" - a bit of a horror of the workaday world. Zombie-like creatures infest the city, but what's worse - the same old routine or facing these crazy people?
-"Mercer Warehouse Haunt" - have you ever heard of a horse ghost? You will after this one
-"Tyne Cabin" - a freaky, biting little short that will have you looking at your dusting in a different way

Lavery also accompanied the stories with his token artwork. He made all of the illustrations that come after each story himself. Really slick, but doesn't take away from what you envision in the story yourself.

Would definitely recommend if you are into bizarre stories, or if you watched "Freaky Stories" or read "Choose Your Own Adventure". These shorts dive into the grand mysteries and, warning, may have you questioning things about the world you know.

In death, the soul leaves the body but where does it go? Travel through time and space to an eerie universe known as the Macrocosm, where souls regain their memories of not only how they died but what happens next. The journey is challenging and wrought with peril. Anyone can observe what happens but they better tread softly or else they might never escape those lurking behind them...

Into the Macrocosm is a short-story collection of some of the best dark fantasy, horror, and speculative fiction stories I've ever read. As a reader of the great masters of the genre, I found each story activated my imagination with the same morbid fascination as one stares at a gruesome accident. Each story is woven with a precise, well-executed plot, tight characters, just the right amount of suspense and creep factor. The world-building is exceptional, and each story transported me inside the world Konn Lavery has created. Some were downright scary while others had the mystique of horror. The Nameless One is the perfect main character as it's easy to insert oneself into him to observe all that is going on. Konn Lavery is a brilliant writer and I give him credit for weaving complete stories in the short story format. If you're a fan of Poe, The Twilight Zone, or Lovecraft, you need to read Into the Macrocosm. Highly recommend!

The book is actually a collection of short stories tied together with an overarching idea. The stories are diverse, yet if you pay attention you can spot connections between some of the stories, which is cool. The stories will challenge you in different ways. Some are scary, others depressing, and some made me laugh. If you like sci-fi writing with a touch of darkness, then you will like this book.

‘Captivating characters and a cleverly designed, fantastical plot. A highly recommended set of shorts.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

REVIEW
After glancing at the cover for this book and skimming the blurb, I decided this is going to be very dark, very gritty, and very fantastical. And I wasn't far wrong. Written by the talented Konn Lavery, it follows the Nameless One who is attempting to understand the deaths of 22 souls. What follows is a cleverly plotted story - divided up into 22 individual shorts - populated with intriguing, often charismatic characters who all seem to be in a different state of flux.
In terms of writing style, this is where the author truly excels. Not only is the pacing excellent, there's also a good balance between powerful descriptive prose and realistic, well-written dialogue. This is a very atmospheric story. The author knows his setting - the mysterious Midway - and wants the reader, like the characters, to be immersed in it.
This set of shorts is not a simple read; the reader will have to work hard to keep up with what's going on, why it’s going on, and even where it's happening. But it's intriguing stuff. It'll hook you in. And I suspect, like me, you will end up determined to find the answers the Nameless One is looking for.
Who is the book for? Well, if you enjoy the later Clive Cussler novels full of lazy predictability, this book is not for you. But if you don't mind working a little, if you enjoy being intrigued, of never knowing what will happen next but really, really wanting to know, this set of shorts will be right up your street.
Enjoy!

Into the Macrocosm by Kohn Lavery is a collection of short stories about an unknown character who is the observer of 22 deaths. At the beginning of this story, I was acquainted with theories of life after death. Kohn Lavery addresses these theories in multiple ways, all of which are spiritual and fiction. Although the character is more of an observer in these stories, I like how I can still feel the personal connections while reading along. It was easy to get entangled in these stories, but there is enough adventure to keep me interested. I appreciated Kohn Lavery for including subheadings in this collection because it helped me keep track of special events that lead to the plot twists.

While I can’t say that I enjoyed every story in the collection because I was confused about the story direction, many of them were enjoyable For this I will give Into The Macrocosm by Kohn Lavery. None of these stories are dramatic horrifying, but the way death is talked about in this novel is enough to give you goosebumps. The way spiritual transformation is portrayed was also enough to send me in a trans of an out-of-body experience. I loved that this novel used these dark stories to highlight the importance of self-awareness. I also loved how the author showed how much the darkness within us and around us can weigh us down. This collection is definitely something you will want to read during bedtime with a night light of course.

Maybe one decent story, almost every story throughout time was pretty boring.

I listened to the entire book and wish I didn't. Audio quality and narration was really good, so that sucked me in and kept me there. Wish that it didn't.

‎Each short story pulled me deeper into Lavery’s eerie, beautifully strange universe. The Nameless One’s journey through the Midway was gripping, with just enough philosophical weight to make me pause and reflect. Loved the variety and creativity!

Give up all ideas about yourself , what you meant to be and simply be." The value of this book cannot be overstated I hold my copy very close and dear. From the perspective of sheer love for this genre and amazing writing this book wastes no paper. This book doesn't waste your time. After reading the book it feels that layers and layers of pessimism and thrill has just peeled over and what remains is the engaging plot and storyline. The reader will find all the answers. One sincere advice, please read it slowly, one story at a time. It will be easy to grasp that way.

All and all this is an amazing book written by an amazing young author.

It is very rare for a book to have its characters live beyond the pages, and at the same time let it transcend its own genre into something else. Into the Macrocosm does that, and more.
