"Sarkar Badi Ke Rahesya," the Hindi version of Sutapa Basu's "The Cursed Inheritance," is a gripping and engaging mystery. The story follows Anuradha, who inherits her family mansion and discovers dark secrets. The book is rich with Indian culture and folklore, and the spooky mansion is described in detail, adding to the suspense. The characters are well-developed, each hiding their own secrets. The pacing is good, with many surprises and twists. Despite some awkward dialogue and predictable moments, the story is compelling and well-told, keeping readers hooked. It's a great read for anyone who loves mysteries.

Book Title: The Cursed Inheritance
Author: Sutapa Basu
Format: Kindle

Book Title:
The book's title, ' The Cursed Inheritance ', is quite explanatory, and one can guess the plotline.

Book Cover:
The cover image of the book is a big mansion and a young woman walking towards the entrance. This image serves apt to the blurb of the story.

About the book:
Anahita Sarkar, who has grown up in London, is bequeathed a mansion in Kolkata that she has never seen. She travels to the City of Joy to dispose of her inheritance to realise that it has deep, dark secrets. As she enters the mansion, these secrets become enigmas that pursue her; a grand house that speaks to her, an intriguing visitor who knows a little too much, a friendly foe who wraps secrets in riddles, and a mysterious past that is cursed—putting at stake her family's reputation and her values. Can she dig deeper to unravel the mystery and turn the cursed inheritance into a blessing?

My review:
It has been a practice in world literature that if it comes to the exciting thriller mysteries, there will be an abandoned house or bungalow, some curse of evil spirit and the male or the female protagonist being the bait. The story then follows with the adventurous travel of the characters in the story against the evil forces, and then the good wins over the bad.

In this story by author Sutapa Basu, the story revolves around Anahita, an NRI unaware of her inheritance. After her father's death, she visits Kolkata, unaware of how the city will turn her life upside do. As an inherited property to sell the mansion, she owns and plans to go back to London.

But, it doesn't go as planned. The mansion is mysterious and cursed. The supernatural events that take place are narrated well.

Characters:
The story has fewer characters, but every character is essential from their introduction in the story. Very excitingly, the mansion and the inherited curse also act as characters. Such is the strength and scope given to these things. Anahita, the female protagonist in the story, experiences disturbing yet eye-opening incidents. During this action sequence, the elements of supernatural power providing strength to the story is equally exciting.

Narration:
This is the best part of this book. The explanation and mention of a mansion, the inherited property, curse that runs around the family etc., is fascinating. The descriptive writing creates an eerie feeling and chilling thrill in the readers. The plot is quite exciting, and thus the book is unputdownable. Making the readers hooked to a short book of 140 odd pages is just incredible.

Language & Grammar:
The readers can find an acceptable language with adequate vocabulary. The family saga, the supernatural elements that make the story enjoyable, are very well described. The imaginative power of the author is reflected coherently in the language used.

My Final Verdict:
Suspense and thrilling story!

Book Title: 3/5
Book Cover: 3/5
Inside the book: 3/5
Characters: 3/5
Narration: 3/5
Language & Grammar: 3/5
Final Rating: 3/5

Are all inheritances blessing or do some come with an inevitable twisted past? All the secrets that Sarkar Bari has been hiding all these years  to be unraveled with the visit of Ann to the place. With the death of her father, Ann and her brother trying to sell their ancestral home, rather known Sarkar Bari. She is stunned to learn about her grand father's unethical, cruel and monstrous past. However one day she stumbles upon his journals, which were cleverly hidden, contained the ciphers waiting to unsettle the dark secrets of the Sarkar Bari. Will Ann gets to unravel the truths without having to face repercussions and in what way this is gonna affect the fate of the place?

Apart from surreal description of the house and place, cursed inheritance sprouts the imagination alongside chills. It creates a story of curious past of the old man and tries to unearth his past layer by layer. It takes an unexpected twist with the emergence of Egyptian treasure (not a spoiler). It intrigues the story with a twist of supernatural, mystery and a sense of suspense.  Although story line is strong but ends abruptly. It tries to transport readers into the creepy world of imagination. I rate it 3.5

A book that will take you to a world of sleuthing with a different twist to it in the end!

The Cursed Inheritance is a novella by Sutapa Basu and she has chosen to set her entire story in the ‘City of Joy’ itself ‘Kolkata’. The story begins on a normal pace with giving us a hint in the very first chapter that something riveting is in store for us as we flip through the consecutive pages further that will soon take us on a roller coaster ride along with the protagonist of the story.

The book puts light on the protagonist Anahita Sarkar who is a London return and successive heir of the once famed ‘Sarkar Bari’ which she is about to inherit from her grandfather Mr. Hirendranath Sarkar, who is no more in this world. Here in the mansion she meets some intriguing characters who have added to the charm of not only to the ambience of a Bengali Household but the typical native words used by these characters like Lokkhi Mashi and Gonuda have also increased the volume of the language making it a pleasant read. Though I am typically not a big fan of borrowing in novels or stories, of the other language other than English but it varies from case to case. Sutapa has precisely used the perfect dose of Bengali terms by wherein and why they should have been placed, making it an easily understandable narration for readers of all kind.

Moreover, in the novel you get the concoction of both, the whim of the classic world merging well with the modern. All though everything is happening only in the present with fewer episodes taking place in the past but they work as the most important strings to bring the story to the present and also making it clear for Anna aka Anahita to find the missing pieces of the puzzle. She compulsively gets attracted towards sleuthing because of the very first night that leads her to many mysterious things archived in the mansion. Also the suspicious behavior of people around her becomes a huge reason that she finds herself sleuthing from the time she sets foot in this Bari. She gets to unfold the mystery one by one, at the stake of finding herself in trouble as well but there is someone who is with her on her journey of unfolding many secrets hidden into the ‘Sarkar Bari, whom you will enjoy finding about on your reading.

Likewise, the pressure on her to sell the mansion and be gone her way, becomes another of those reasons to know why its caretaker Mr. Raha is safeguarding some secrets from her. But after few incidents that lead her to certain hints towards the truth that some cursed treasure is there in the house, she becomes even more adamant to get to the end of the story. And along with Anna you will also sleuth along and find each chapter becoming more interesting than the other. This is the point where you will surely would want to finish the book in one go. It’s totally unputdownable and no wonder Sutapa’s extreme intelligence of writing in such a genre will surprise you as mostly her earlier books have been on historical fiction. No wonder what the title suggests the inheritance will come as a curse to Anna but what she makes of it is for you all to know but one thing to take notice here is that the writer has wisely chosen the plot moving around the title and doing justice to it.

Chrysanthemum Chronicles’ Verdict: To end this review I would say that there is a guarded secret which even I won’t want to reveal as it would be a total spoiler, but you will find it to be the most enthralling one. There would be many skeletons coming out of the closet slowly as you will journey through each chapter. Talking about the language if I have to, undoubtedly there is a smooth flow of the words dancing joyfully over the pages as Sutapa has great command over it. But compared to her earlier novels this one seems fast paced and the structure of the words creates a subtle charm. I would rate this book 4.5 on the basis of its content, great mindfulness, predictable yet a beguiling story; it will make a satisfying read for all age groups.

Do you like mystery thriller books with a touch of supernatural elements or fantasy?

If yes, then The Cursed Inheritance by Sutapa Basu is probably a must read book for you.

Based in the beautiful city of Kolkata (one of my personal favourite city) this is a story of Anahita (a NRI from London) and the inheritance she didn't knew she owns before her father's death. The beautiful huge mansion she was supposed to sell and go back as soon as she can to her home, but she ends up getting involved in the mysterious events regarding the mansion and the people related to it.

This is my first ever book by this author but I have heard a lot about her books and how wonderfully she writes. And I must say, after reading this books, I agree with those who praise her work.

The story was intriguing, fast paced, and the mysteries you can't wait to solve. There were so many elements in the book that caught my attention. First of them will be the way the author had described the story. You can feel like every scene is happening in front of you. The detailed scenarios of the Kolkata's culture. And if you have ever been to that city (like me) you'll probably know what I exactly mean when I talked about Kolkata's culture.

And ofcourse, we can't left out the mansion. There are so many secrets in that supposed cursed mansion. Dark secrets, supernatural events that will make you thrilled. A mysterious boy only Anahita can see, and the ending that will leave you with (I knew this was coming) and also (I didn't see that one coming) both at the same time. Can't really go much into details about what exactly is this mystery that Anahita is going to solve unless you read it for yourself. But I can guarantee that much that it won't be disappointing.

A good quick read.

"An inheritance of lies, cheating and crime?"

It has been a long time since I read any of such good books, a story which is quick paced, moves with a hyped mystery and an amazing , rather super amazing narrative. Anahita and her brother, Robin inherited an ancesteral property of their grandfather, who was a well known man and worked in foreign services. He has hidden a lot of secrets and led a life full of crime, lust and greed. After his death, his grand daughter came to India to sell the property, but the house, Sarkar Bari blowed up her mind with its history of curse. Will she be able to know about the haunted house, a boy unknown, unseen to others? That was the question which led the story ahead at a greater pace.

What I loved about the story is the fact that not for a moment I felt out of context, it was engaging all along. The themes addressed are of value. The diasporic element, where the kids living and born out of their root countires is quite prominent. There is no going back to roots in most of the cases, the inherited properties only become a liability for most of them. Then the next thing which caught my attention was how the poor are treated, the kids without parents, who leave their villages are later discarded everywhere. And then finally, the element of black magic in Kolkata, for which one stereotypes them as God knows what what.

The author did justice to all the themes above. And I am in love with the writing too. Also, I read it in just a go, kindle edition has only 129 pages. And I should not forget to mention the sketches in the book, they are soo lively and make more sense to read the story.

Highly recommended. ❤👍

The Cursed inheritance by Sutapa Basu is a tale of past reminiscence of the character through the crux of time by visiting something which took over the destruction of time and now says all the mouthpiece it witnessed during its green days. The exciting plot with ecstatic description makes the story more lively.
Anahita Sarkar, a London native, has been bequeathed in a mansion in Kolkata that she has never seen. She journeys to the City of Joy to dispose of her inheritance, only to discover that it is riddled with deep, dark secrets.
These secrets become enigmas when she enters the mansion: a grand house that whispers to her, an intriguing guest who knows a little too much, a friendly adversary who wraps secrets in riddles, and a mysterious past that is cursed—all putting her family's integrity and her ideals at risk. Will she be able to decipher the mystery and turn the cursed inheritance into a blessing by digging deeper?

I love how the author in his description over and over again took the reference of Bengali culture and structure so swiftly that being a Bengali I can relate to it so much. The story is a mystery so telling too much about the plot and secret will ruin the fun for the reader but to be very honest I can say this book will capture you through its peak of suspense and the little riddles and notes it displayed will give you the vibe of a detective story.
I recommend this book to everyone willing to read something different from a simple love story. A book to look for during this lockdown to spend your time.

What an amazing read it was! Mindblowing! It will really take time to come up from the entire up and down story, I have gone through. "The Cursed inheritance" by author Sutapa Basu is actually a very prominent work and I really had a great expectation from her. I must say I am impressed by her writing style and imagination power. The way she has expressed and penned down the beauty of the city of joy is very impressive. It's always special when I can find my city in a book as that book attracts me indeed. The story revolves around "Sarkar Bari" and the dark secrets behind it. Anahita Sarkar, born and brought in London has never seen the Sarkar bari in Kolkata. After entering into the mansion, slowly but steadily she started to enclose them. Grab this book and I can assure you that you will never regret it. The plot is so intriguing and interesting. The easy writing style made this book more catchy and smooth to read. I love all those attached arts of the book and the typical Kolkata accents as well. Author Sutapa didn't even ignore those minor details from Kolkata and I appreciate that. I will recommend this book to everybody.

The debut thriller by the author is a neat one where Anahita Sarkar, the protagonist, who has grown up in London, is bequeathed a mansion in Kolkata that she has never seen. She travels to the City of Joy to dispose of her inheritance (as per her discussion with her brother, Robin) only to realise that it has deep, dark secrets.
These secrets reveal a lot that the Sarkar family has gone through over ages, and why her own Father never returned to the city, and the thriller becomes spooky as Anahita witnesses certain supernatural happenings. A decent read.

The setting of this story in an old mansion of Kolkata is very impressive. Bringing in elements of Tantric rituals is an interesting manner in which to make sense of the mystery as well as tie the plot down to Bengal.

I couldn't see the curse in the plot though. The narration was good, the pace was ease and an ending deserved.

A young protagonist, Anahita raised in the UK who has never set foot in her inherited mansion in Kolkata, Sarkar Bari comes to meet many secrets hidden within the walls. As soon as she arrives she's visited by an unknown little boy, and she's intrigued.

The author has done a great job writing this book, the descriptive writing brings an eerie thrill to the plot and makes you not wanting to put the book down! It was a short read and provided as much as one can expect from a 100 page read! I was thoroughly impressed by the author's amazing, I was not expecting the book to take the turn that it did.

If you're looking for reading good books from Indian authors I would suggest you take a look at Sutapa Basu's work
