David McCaleb was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Growing up on a farm, he studied the teachings of nature, enjoying hunting and fishing, intermingled with hard labor. One of the last green belts on the east coast, the Eastern Shore is steeped in creative culture, with which he credits much of his inspiration.

He graduated from St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware, attended Valley Forge Military College, and was accepted into the United States Air Force Academy. He served in the Air Force as a finance officer for five years and received multiple awards acknowledging his skill in helping the government waste money track expenditures.

After his military service, he enjoyed an eclectic career which included entrepreneur, marketer, insurance agent, salesman, inventor, financial analyst, drapery installer, and manufacturer. His diverse background enables his characters to possess an uncommon depth. He thoroughly enjoys any project involving the work of hands, but doubly so those of the pen.

Wow, what a great story. I really enjoyed David McCaleb’s first story ‘Recall’, and this is a fantastic follow up. It was so well written and easy to read, and one thing that really adds to this book is the detail and background the Author has put into the characters. For me it’s great when a story is based in a couple of different countries, and also goes back in time to a characters childhood. Moving their family around to stay alive isn’t the most convenient thing for Red and Lori, but they certainly can’t relax until they find out who is after them. With North Korea, China and Israel all in the mix, it’s not going to be an easy thing to work out who wants them dead. Then to make things even more difficult, there could be a mole in either Mossad or the CIA that is assisting in their demise. Since Red doesn’t know who he can trust even in his own organisation, he asks his friend Carter who is an ex FBI agent to help investigate. Red and Lori are both in jobs where they could have upset someone enough to target them. Red is quite surprised at how well Lori is handling begin shot at, especially for a CIA desk jockey. If you enjoy Action Thrillers then you’ll certainly enjoy this book. It’s definitely entertaining, and well worth a read.

Red Ops Thriller #2

Before reading this book I searched online to find out what the first book in the series was about and found that Tony “Red” Harmon was in an elite spec ops group, had his mind “washed” of his brain enhancements and thought he was just the average guy with a wife, three children and a house in suburbia until an encounter in a parking lot triggered memories that must have caused much to happen because…

Beginning book two, the one I am reviewing, Red and his family were visiting the home they were leaving to start a new life. Why leaving? Three weeks earlier a wet team came in to wipe them out but first they wanted to say goodbye to the place that had been home. While there Red finds a gun that he then asks Detective Carter to start investigating. He also asks Carter to try to find out who might have sent the wet team in. He is now the team leader of DET: 5 – his team of spec ops and we find out that his wife also works for the government but is employed by the CIA chasing financial trails.

While settling into their new home trying the investigating begins to pay off but also brings more trouble to Red and his family. Throw in two side stories that are taking place in China and Korea that will eventually intersect with Red’s next Op and you have an intriguing story that concludes but without the “bad guy” found or brought in SO there will be another story in the series.

This is an action-packed fast-paced book with much going on. It all comes together in the end but at times I wondered how it would all be tied together. As I read I felt this is probably a “guy story” – one that might make more sense to a guy…but I still enjoyed it and would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books-Lyrical Underground for the ARC – this is my honest review.

The much anticipated sequel to Recall comes David McCaleb's Reload.

Tony "Red" Harmon and his three children are playing in front yard of their soon-to-be-previous home. Three weeks earlier, a wet team shot up their home. As one final goodbye to their house, Red and his children are playing wiffle ball in the front yard when Red stumbles on a pistol hidden under the hedges in front of his house. It isn't his, so whose gun is it?

Red, who is now a part of a division of the Air Force Detachment of the Special Operations Command, also called 'Det' decides to look into this gun. Calling on his closest friend Carter, it appears that the chief suspect is in fact Red's wife Lori, an employee of the CIA.

Not knowing exactly the reasoning why the wet team attacked their home, Red and Carter begin investigating what caused the attack. As they investigate, all clues seem to point to a mole who is leaking information to Mossad, who is possibly behind the attack.

There seems to also be trouble brewing in both North Korea and China. North Korean national Ko Chung Ho and the Chinese Zhang Dawe seem to have big plans for Red and his family.

David McCaleb does a great job keeping the pace of this story. It is a book that can easily be started and finished in one sitting, as it is a nonstop page turner. It is an intriguing, action-packed adventure that will keep you up all night trying to find out what will happen next. McCaleb is one of the few that has seemed to beat the headlines.

Outstanding second book in the series. I would recommend that you read them in order. The story follows Red, a special operator with the Det. Hi wife works for the CIA, he thinks she's just an analyst. But someone is leaking info on his unit to North Korea and now there are people trying to kill him. He's told the mole may be his wife. Red heads to North Korea. Mr McCaleb does a brilliant job in his description of the utter despair, and depravity and pure evil that exist there. I look forward to the third in the series!

Far too trusting

Red is either blind as. Abat or far too trusting
If his wife is being straight with him it will be a miracle
Book 1 raised a few questions, like how does a CIA analyst take out 2 soldiers and capture a third whilst being tied up and in front of Red. Book 2 raises further questions and Red still doesn't seem concerned
Everyone else is, just not Red
The rest of the storyline is ok. Same characters appear and other threads to the story appear and it makes for a pleasant enough read. I just wish Red was a tad more sceptical

One of the best military thrillers I have read in a long time.

Do yourself a favor and JUMP into this series. I just finished RELOAD and I cannot wait for the next book. Great book, great series! As an FYI I am a fan of Thor, Clancy, Flynn and Mark Greaney so that you can compare what I like with what you read. If you like any of those authors you will enjoy this series.

Gripping storyline

Yet again Red has to try and stop an attack on the USA, only this time it is not a terrorist attack but a nation state that is conspiring to attack the US economy by using counterfeit money which is so good it is nearly perfect, the problem is compounded by the fact that there is a mole in the CIA and the main suspect is Lori who happens to be Red's wife.

Interesting second book, plenty of action, lots of violence. It leaves you hanging and a bit perplexed at the end. The author better write book number three pretty soon.

GNab I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, David McCaleb, and Lyrical Underground in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for sharing your hard work with me.

This was a fast paced military novel, with a tight storyline and lots of excitement. I found myself having to use a cheat sheet to keep up with the many varied characters, some still being added during the last bit of the novel, but that confusion may have just been me - it's hot summer here and rainy, so humid as well. In any case, this is a novel I will refer to my Military family, as I know they will all enjoy it.
