Elle lives in the states with her family who frequently moves to different cities at each year because of occupational hazard, trying to build her social media account after she lost her last one because of harmful trolling. She also has to do something about rekindling her relationship with her brother Nick: they seem like getting more estranged lately.
Elle’s newfound popularity foe her lip syncing ability gave her enough admirers in the past and now she befriends the popular girl of the school which encourages her to a big challenge to join a competition which requires for her to attract at least 15k more followers’ attention. She accepts the challenge and connects with one of her British fans: our other narrator Holly, such a great admirer of Christmas spirit, who writes her future self Christmas cards, having hard time to deal with her mother’s boyfriend Colin ( they also named their dog with the same name) but two things happen to push her to swap places with Elle: a painful betrayal of her boyfriend and her mom’s decision about their house she finally finds out!
Yes! Two girls take risks to switch places and experience Christmas in different cities, different continents, different environments: what could go wrong? Some obstacles and some quiet hot romance! Are you all in? If you say yes, go blind! Keep your Christmas spirit high!
I have a little hard time to connect with the characters and their motives in the beginning but when swapping process started, the story’s direction changed and I enjoyed it more!
It’s one sit, fast pacing, soft, heartwarming reading that I truly needed!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
This is so heartwarming and filled with holiday cheer. The first bit had me like What. Is. Happening?! I persisted and it all started to make sense. Perhaps a bit of a generation gap (all me) at first, but I really fell in love with both of our girls: Holly and Noelle. Holly's family has a tradition of writing a letter about the current holiday festivities to their future selves. Not a bad idea. They also like to name their tree each year. One name was Jenny-Fir Lopez. I think that was my favorite and then there was the poinsettia that a friend named Stemi Lovato. I like a good pun. This is a clean romance and would be appropriate for younger teens. Cyberbullying is a thread running through the plot as well as reminders about the joy of Christmas being more about the who than the what. Family ties are so important during the holidays as well as true blue friends. As we find our 2021 holiday season looming in front of us, don't forget Holly's golden rules of Christmas: 1) Never say no to a novelty hot drink. 2) Never wimp out of the high notes of "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey. Includes a Christmas playlist. Remember Mariah Is Watching (Listening)
Thank you to Sourcebooks Fire and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
it’s more of a 2.5….. there were certain things that made this book feel super festive which i liked. however, this book had so much cringe and kinda felt like a 14 year old wrote this. also, the whole storyline of elle benign so obsessed with followers and likes just was not it for me and was extremely annoying to put up with!
My expectations were on the floor and it still managed to disappoint me.
I think my primary problem with this book is that I was under the impression it was a romance book and it wasn't. The two couples are matched together without thought at the ending because they had to? I knew they were going to end together, but I didn't comprehend the reason why.
The two main characters are Elle and Holly. Elle is a social media influencer whose only care is her followers (or at least that's what I think the author was trying to do) Elle joins a challenge to gain followers and has the idea to switch places with someone on the other side of the ocean. Holly is a British girl who is OBSESSED with Christmas, but this year everything seems to be going wrong after her boyfriend breaks up with her, which is why Holly decides to switch places with Elle and celebrate the Christmas season in New York. I love the idea, it reminds me of one of those romcoms I would watch for Christmas with my mom, kinda like the Princess Switch. Just like the movie, this book was not well executed.
The romance, there was no point in it. The characters had barely known each other for a week and had already determined they would make each other happy because their lives were insufferable without them. PLEASE. Fred and Elle didn't even have a particular conversation together where they reflected their personalities. Fred talked about massacres and Elle was already in love with him. And Fred only liked Elle because of her appearance because of her personality... was there even one? Nick and Holly were better but still didn't see the reason why they had to end up together. They made this whole drama where Nick was only smiling lately because of her and he carried out all these random things so she would spend a nice Christmas while Holly was thinking he hated her. Typical YA romance.
I think the writing was even worse than the romance; it felt like it was written by a teenager on Wattpad (and I don't mean smut, cause it didn't have any, I mean the quality.) The book just started badly with that random letter by Holly, which was not well written because it was a letter to herself. The issue is it continued like that; it was all over the place and full of information overload. And the worst part of it: “Elle, I’m so sorry, but something urgent’s come up.” (Chapter 13) The author confused the names. Nick was talking to Holly, but he said Elle when Elle was literally on the other side of the ocean, and this was Holly's chapter... I thought maybe the author did it intentionally and Holly was going to be mad at Nick for getting her name wrong, but no. The author actually wrote the wrong name... editors? Hello? If anyone understood this differently please let me know, maybe I'm just stupid or my copy was wrong or something.
Overall, I didn't like this book, just enjoyed the Christmas vibes because that was the only thing this book was good at.
This book was kind of like the movie The Holiday if it happened in 2021. Two girls meet online and decide to switch homes for Christmas. One girl is trying to win an Instagram challenge and thinks living in a small England village will gain her followers. The other is getting away from her ex boyfriend and the fact that her family is changing their traditions.
The story was cute, but it felt like not a lot happened overall. There was some romance and realizing what's truly important, I just felt like much of the plot was filler. Maybe if there had been a side plot to keep things interesting I would have liked it more? It is an easy holiday read and if you don't mind a fluffy story without too much going on, you'll still have a good time reading.
To si budete chtít přečíst!
Hlavně teda All I Want For Christmas Is You, což vám mohlo podle názvu dojít.
Pokud si budete chtít o Vánocích (nejen) 2021 něco přečíst, tak tohle. Přečtěte si ještě anotaci, ať pořádně víte. A nemáte zač.
This was super cheesy, and not in a good way. The two main characters seemed very immature, and the entire plot line of getting social media followers was not terribly interesting to me. This just came out last year, but it definitely gave off vibes of early 2000s ya, complete with the characters talking in all caps and name dropping. The two characters sounded identical and I had trouble telling them apart so I was constantly flipping back to the beginning to see who was talking. I also didn’t really mesh with the writing style, which I found confusing (I never did figure out why she went to a party dressed as bacon).
I did really like the Christmas feels in the book. There were references to both NYC and London at Christmas which were a lot of fun.
I like life swapping stories, so I was expecting a lot more from this one, but I didn’t end up enjoying it as much as I would have hoped.
Surprisingly there are not that many Christmas themed YA books out there so I jumped on the chance to read Blame it on the Mistletoe. While I had some problems with the writing along the way, I am glad I stuck with the book. It had some charming moments. Maybe not a must read, but it was something cute and light for the holiday season.
Elle is a social media influencer and she is desperate to gain even more followers. So she comes up with the idea to swap places with one of her British fans to drum up publicity. Holly is obsessed with Christmas and she will be flying out to America to hang out with Elle's family for a week. Meanwhile, Elle will head to England. And of course each girl will meet a cute boy during their trip because it wouldn't be much of a holiday romance if love wasn't in the air, right?
Unfortunately the book got off to a bad start as the writing was a bit clunky and all over the place. It was like information overload and it didn't help that Holly is written in a way that is kinda annoying. Lots of capitalized words and periods after a single word to really emphasize the point. I read Ya fiction frequently, and even I thought it was a bit too much at times. Thankfully, as I got to know the character better, I did enjoy her storyline.
The story alternates between the two girls and I thought each one had good chemistry with the male characters. I liked the message that life isn't always picture perfect, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's also good during the holiday season to sit back and reflect on what truly matters the most.
Thank you Sourcebooks Fire for providing me with a digital copy! All thoughts expressed are my honest opinion.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Blame It on the Mistletoe seemed like it was going to be a cute romcom. I was pretty excited to jump into it since Christmas is basically just around the corner. Unfortunately, I just didn't connect to anyone or the story. Which, yes, is a bit disappointing since I hyped myself up for it.
In it, you will meet Elle and Holly. One moves all the time and is trying to rekindle her relationship with Scrooge. Oh, I mean her brother Nick. The other loves all things Christmas and writes pretty fantastic Christmas cards. Both have problems they deal with daily, and they need a break. Stat!
Now I'll admit that I did get the Holiday vibes, but I definitely liked the movie a lot more than this. I just feel like things were overdone or overdramatic at times. Even though things moved at a fast pace, I still found myself being bored with what was going on.
In the end, I just wish that I liked this a lot more than I originally did.
It's no secret that I love a cheesy holiday rom-com, but unfortunately, this one is a little too cringey for my taste. I'm willing to overlook the excessive use of caps lock, but I found the characters shallow, which makes it difficult for me to feel invested in the story. However, this book is still upbeat and quirky, and I'm sure a younger YA audience will enjoy it more than I did.
this is a cute book! definitely nothing fantastic, but i enjoyed reading something simple and straightforward. :)
the writing was definitely not my favorite. i hated the supposed “modern language” and i found quite a few writing mistakes. the characters were nice, but not super memorable. holly and elle had nice character development though.
i thought the concept was really cool, but personally, i don’t think it was executed incredibly.
i’m sure there’s better books out there (and if you want something with a similar concept, i recommend the movie the princess switch), but if you’re just looking for something simple to read, then this is a good option. <3 *ੈ✩‧₊˚
The concept is fun…two girls swap countries for a week. Think: The Holiday in YA book format.
If you’re looking for a quick Christmas romcom, this could be for you. I don’t generally go for romcoms with teenage main characters, and this reminded me why. The characters didn’t have much depth, and I just didn’t really connect with their issues. The romantic developments were lackluster, and the overall culmination of said relationships was anticlimactic. All the conflicts were wrapped up (pun intended) hastily without providing much satisfaction. The antagonists pretty much got away with their bad behavior and the characters seemed okay with that resolution.
The travel adventures were entertaining, and I loved the Christmas atmosphere. Ultimately, this book just isn’t for me, but it’s mostly preference-based.
Meh, meh, meh. Příjemná vánoční oddechovka, ale nic víc. Jednoduchý, předvídatelný, neoriginální. A taky hodně britsko-americký, takže možná zkuste radši anglicky. Ale vypnula jsem u toho mozek naprosto fenomenálně :D 3/5*
It took me a few chapters to get into this one, but once I did I started to love it. Great narrative. Fresh and chatty. Believable characters. Easy read and super cute.
Christmas vibes were there and I liked the two main characters, though the romance part for Elle was a little flat in my opinion. I wasn't a huge fan of how forced the lgtbtq+ rep was in the book, it felt like it was an afterthought and was almost on every page. I'm glad I only paid a few bucks for this with B&N's sale but otherwise, it's a cute Christmassy book!
They all were stuck up in the beginning and I disliked them a lot and like near the end they eventually turned into better people but it should have happened A LOT sooner.
I received an ARC from Edelweiss TW: cyberbullying 3
Christmas is Holly's favorite time of year, and she's determined to top last year's celebration and it's bittersweet miracle of a not so great guy. But how is she supposed to have a perfect Christmas when she just found out they're moving and her family won't even be able to be together?! Elle doesn't care that much about Christmas, her family's festive business has long ago taken away excitement about the holiday. But this year is different, because a Christmas influencer challenge may give her the followers and approval of her dreams. All it'll take is a scheme- switching places with someone from her mom's childhood home, back in England. When Holly and Elle swap places, neither one of them are prepared for what they're getting themselves into. But the good surprises and the bad will bond them, point them towards love, and get them through Christmas.
This is basically exactly what you'd expect a YA novel of a Hallmark Movie would, so if that's what you expect, and what you want, then you'll have a fun, fluffy, and festive time. There are dual romances at play- with one character's best friend and with the other's brother- and plenty of Christmas challenges and traditions. Plus, scene exploring NYC and London, playing well with the travel aspect of the book.
For me, I felt like the characters were too similar. On one had I'm glad this novel didn't go along with the cliche of the Christmas lover and the too serious, big-shot Christmas hater, but failing to have any kind of real divide made Elle and Holly feel way too much like the same character. They even share intentions, and Elle gets compared to Holly multiple times. Actually, the only big difference between them is that I was annoyed 90% of the time during Holly's narration because her speaking style felt so other the top.
Partially because the characters don't have much definition, I wasn't a fan of the romances. There are cute parts and if you sort of turn off your brain and melt into the feel good vibe then it's fine, but there isn't much actual chemistry between any of them or real reason for them to be interested in each other. For a romcom the focus is barely really on romance at all.
I was also hoping the "childhood best friends" part of the story would be more prevalent. It's so cool that their mom's were friends when they were younger, and the coincidence of it gets smoothed over really quickly. I was just expecting that to get played with a little more, or for the realization to have been a bigger moment.
It doesn't have much depth, and the plot doesn't make the most sense, but if you just want something holiday-feeling and quick, you might enjoy this book.
This book is for Christmas lovers who watch The Holiday every year and want to read a cute contemporary romance.
Elle, an American influencer, has decided to take part in a competition to gain more followers. If she loses: she has to close her account. To win, she decides to swap houses with Holly who lives in a small town in the UK. She’s going to help Elle and guide her to enjoy the Christmas spirit overseas.
Holly loves making lists and she’s obsessed with Christmas. She wants to have the best Christmas ever and going to the US could help her achieve her dream.
They’re both going to learn a lot about themselves, their family and meet new people thanks to this life changing experience.
It’s cute and funny, I really liked the different references to pop music and Christmas traditions in these two countries.
Blame It on the Mistletoe felt like a YA version of one of my favourite Christmas movies ever, The Holiday.
This book was a cute, cheesy, rom-com that was super fun to read right before Christmas! I really enjoyed Elle's POV and her character development. I also loved how this book examines how social media can make our lives look perfect when in reality it is usually far from that.
My only issue with it was Holly’s character. I found her annoying and the use of all-caps was overly excessive in her chapters, so I struggled to get through her chapters.
Overall, this was a cute and fun book to read for the holidays!
I’m undecided if I’m actually going to read this at this moment, but the start of it is hilarious
Update: I read it and had such a good time. I’m going to go for 4 stars for now, I might change my mind later. Rtc
A solid 4 ⭐️
I had such a fun time reading this and laughed out loud multiple times throughout, Holly was particularly funny. I sometimes get nervous with multiple POVs but each voice felt clear and different from the other, though I do think that I preferred Holly. I don’t really have an internet presence beyond here for books and my personal accounts on other platforms and I don’t care much about who’s popular and influencers and all that. It was interesting to see what Elle was going through as an influencer and how she wanted to be perceived online and also her growth in that regard. Both romances were cute and surprisingly I don’t think that I preferred one over the other and I loved Holly’s friends in the UK. I wish we had a little more time with each of their moms though as they felt like a big part of the why everything happened and I didn’t get enough of them throughout or in the end, especially.
As a 26 year old reading YA, and it being contemporary, some of the new age/nowadays lingo took me out of the story some and in many instances I just mentally ignored the attempt at being hip with abbreviations and lengthened them naturally within my head (obvs for instance). I hate to say it, but it did kind of feel like an olde person writing for the kids, but as an older person reading it, I only get to say so much in that regard lol. I had a hard time with the setting in some instances and couldn’t get a 100% get a clear picture going, but I did love the way she did her characters. Overall I had a good time though and I’d definitely check out more from this author.
This was cute. Made for a fun little holiday read. The experience was made even better as I got this as a holiday edition box from Authentic Books filled with all the goodies. I wasn’t aware this was a re-titled book that had been previously released, so if you inhale holiday books during that time of the year just make sure you haven’t read this under the other title name. I rounded this up to a 4. I think it got better as the book progressed. It took me a long time but not due to the book, due to life. I wished personally I would have finished this closer to Christmas but that truly has nothing to do with the book itself. The premise was cute, the characters were fun, the settings were great, and it was obviously a good get in the spirit or enjoy the spirit of the holidays book.
