This is tough little book! It contains problems, hints, and solutions based on Stanford University's competitive math exam for high school seniors. Competitive is the operative word here. Some of these problems are nasty little buggers. A fun puzzle book for math geeks, but probably too intense for the HS classroom.

This selection stands out for recreational problem solving as apart from the typical math problems, as well as typical thought puzzle style problem solving. Basically you are given some general information and then asked to provide a solution and prove it. Sometimes there are multiple ways to arrive at a solution, which is the beautiful part about these. You need to be able to think how to solve the problem, not just determine what the answer is.

I didn't expect to see so much on geometry and the various relationships from shapes and angles; IE percentage of an area that is covered by circles if they are packed together with 4 touching points, and again with 6 touching points, how to draw a line that splits a polygon into 2 equal parts and goes through an arbitrary point within the polygon. These are thought-intensive problems that demand both conceptual understanding of the subject, and the actual math tools to back it up.

Many of the solutions are above my education level, but I can still conceptualize the problem, and definitely still enjoyed just looking through them. I've purchased a 2nd physical copy to go through with no information to reference, so that I can find places where I could learn more. All in all, 5 star.
