One letter from a city girl can cause untold chaos! Bell has been meeting up with Syr as promised, which of course turns into its own kind of commotion as the workers at the Mistress of Fertility, the Sword Princess, and even Freya Familia all get involved. While everyone is preoccupied with these hijinks, a new shadow approaches the city...
I wasn’t liking where it was going in the first few pages, it was actually quite silly… but as the book progresses and pieces start to fall in place I couldn’t put it down. Bell develops in an interesting way and we finally get to the bottom of what is going on with Syr. Next volume is looking interesting…Bell will have to step up big time!
In any event, this isn't particularly successful on the rom-com front. The women mostly just come off as unhinged just because Bell has a date that he doesn't even want to go on, and Lyu really suffers as a character. But the ending is top-notch and brings us into what feels like the series' end game.
Also anything nice I may have said about Freya in a previous review? Yeah, I take it all back. She's unbearably selfish and vain. If you require such unfettered devotion from your followers to the point where they turn on their own blood family (*cough* Allen *cough*), then you don't deserve to be worshiped as a goddess.
Bell and the others have finally pulled out of the dungeon, but a new problem has arisen. Yes, Syr Flover asks out Bell Cranel on a date. However, whether he likes or hates it, he doesn't have the option to refuse:
"If, if. If the idiotic you denies her, you and the 'Hestia Family' will be eradicated."
"Ehhhhhhhhh?!"
For the sake of his family, Bell challenges the battlefield known as dating. But as this situation continues, Syr's secret is revealed gradually. Will this truth change Bell and Syr's relationship?
70% of the novel is hilarious while the other 30% is very serious, which I think is a good balance. As the story advances, there are plenty of very interesting developments. Of course, one of them is Syr's secret. I found this one to be particularly surprising to the extent where I happily wait for the next volume. For those that like Syr, I wholeheartedly recommend this volume!
4½ rounded up because oh the development of various characters, the set up for the new story arc, and just the pure, unadulterated joy I had reading it.
While it is largely just a long date with Syr, we learn that there is a lot more to her than being a waitress at the Benevolent Mistress tavern. We get to learn a bit about Bell and see him grow, we hear some more about the history of the world and various characters. All in all, it was a fun book that also set up this new story arc.
Great little rom-com moments along with some great action sequences, in this one, we learn a bit more about syr and what her connection to the Freya Familia is and it is definitely quite the shocker 🤯🤯. This is setting up the next light novel to be a crazy event, so I can't wait to see how everything unfolds!!
As another review noted this started out rather silly, and for a good part I was wondering when something important would happen. With the last book being about more or less regular life for the characters, I was surprised that this book was more of the same. But it eventually paid off in spades and left me with quite a bit to think about. And knowing that all Hell was about to break loose.
But while it did answer a big question and explain several things, it created another huge question in its place.
Why?
SPOILER ALERT:
I can't imagine Freya slumming it as Syr day after day, working at the inn, that just doesn't make sense. Horn had to be Syr for the most part, but why? Why was the Syr persona created, and kept working at the inn for years? It was useful to Freya when Bell showed up, so she could pretend to be a normal person for a while and try to get closer to Bell, but why did they bother with the persona in the first place?
Of course, one of the great sins many authors commit is never asking themselves that question. Why was this person there in the first place? It is just convenient for their story so they were there, but they never consider why they were there and it leaves a rather big logical hole behind.
I don't know if that is the case here. It is possible that the entire Syr/ Horn thing was a made up only recently to fit what Omori decided to do with the story, that is another great sin authors make, ret-conning something in and it doesn't quite fit. But it is also possible that he had planned this all along and that there is a logical explanation for why they had created the Syr persona, and Horn - and sometimes Freya - spent so much time just being a serving girl.
Whatever the case, Syr is going to disappear, and as Omori said in the afterword, this event is a bomb in the story.
There is something confusing there at the end though. Freya had decided that she was indifferent to Bell now that he had rejected her, and couldn't even understand why she was so enamored with him before. So why then does she decide to have Bell stolen away? If she no longer cares...?
Of course, now it could just be spite. He will become her toy then. And no one else may have him.
She had better hope it goes better for her than it did for Ishtar.
This whole volume is essentially one long date.. That in itself is not necessarily an issue as it's nice for Bell to finally show some confidence/backbone. I frequently forget how young Bell is until he flounders when encountering an obstacle that appears minor thus highlighting his inexperience. What bothers me however is that the author has essentially utilized an entire volume to attempt to paint a character in a sympathetic light and justify their very poor behavior. I have no doubt Bell will ultimately forgive them. I hesitate to say he is a doormat but he is certainly the type of heroic stereotype he has been trying to emulate throughout the story.
On a positive note this volume also covers various characters that are finally starting to come to terms with their feelings towards Bell. Additionally background on Bell's Grandfather and Aiz's family are brought up and there's hope as Bell seems to be less dense when it comes to history than he is in other matters in his life.
The whole book is about one of the most special and enigmatic characters in this serie. This was supposed to be about Syr, but the story is quite dissapointing. Even some chapters seems to be written by an entirely different author, as are the art inserts. All Syr's innocence and beauty is lost. It seems like all members of Freya familia are just a bunch of psychos. The plot doesn't make any sense, although at the end it seems to take course, opening the path fir the next arc in this serie.
It was fun and a different volume but at the same time a little boring and just the preparation for the next arc. There is a revelation here that was built since the begging of the story and the author use it like a huge bomb, but it was obvious for some time. This volume depends on a lot of the next one so it's hard to really review as one. But in the end i really was not caring about this new arc.
I really enjoyed this Book. Bell gets invited to the Harvest Festival by Syr, the waitress who makes his lunch everyday. Odd thig is the invite is delivered by someone from Freya Family. Bell gets trained in how to make a lady happy and proper date procedure by another member of Freya family. The date goes wellish. They have lots of fun, but then it gets complicated. The ending kind of spoils the story, but sets up some interesting times down the road.
Honestly this volume is pretty well written for the series. It's gives a lot of character to the, well, characters, we get the resolution to a long standing mystery, and there's still a few action beats to tie everything together.
I thought this volume was just going to be filler before the next arc. Boy was I wrong. Even with the cute romance stuff in the beginning this issue was as much a page turner as the last and the ending made me want to dive into the next book immediately!
Finally a proper date for our still innocent protagonist! Of course things get very chaotic, mostly for funny reasons, and while it took a bit too long to get to the proper answer to the question that was like an elephant in the pages the whole time, it was worth reading and get the answer.
I really love this series, but this book was slow, and was mostly about nothing. The ending was confusing. I can’t even explain to my sister what happened 🫤. I’m hoping the next book will share some enlightenment about what the heck is going on.
Of all the teachers Bell has had, Hedin is probably the best (or worse) teacher he could’ve gotten. I’m also getting Deja Vu from that last scene. Almost as if something like that has happened to him before but in reverse 😅
Loved the change of pace, got some great reactions from background characters, only wish it had ended differently. I knew it was coming, but wish it didn't have to end in this way.
This volume is the beginning of the Syr arc, its all about Bell and Syr's date. We learnt a lot about what kind of a person Syr is and why she likes Bell and also know her backstory. Bell also gets trained as to how to be a gentleman which is still quite funny and it is very heartwarming as it progresses into the story even further.
I just love the crazy personalities of this world. I like that we finally learn about two characters. The story was fun and funny. I read this book in two days.
I thought it was a good volume a few things I would of changed cause some questions came up that will never be answered but I am just a reader so hindsight is 20/20
Wow this was such a great story. There were parts that even made me teary eyed. There isn’t any action in the dungeons but the emotional level of the story makes up for it.
Nunca me imaginé que este volumen fuera tan bueno, nunca. Me encantó,no leo mucho pero es de lo mejor que he leído mucho tiempo, me entretuvo enormemente, muchas gracias al autor.
