Redesign the World - A Global Call to Action

Rate this book
The world was last designed seventy-five years ago, about the same time that Sam Pitroda was born. This design has outlived its utility. Hyperconnectivity and the COVID-19 pandemic offer a unique opportunity to redesign the world to take humanity to the next level. Redesigning the world is not about looking at it from the point of view of liberal or conservative; left or right; capitalism or socialism; public or private; democracy, dictatorship or monarchy; open or closed systems; rich or poor; urban or rural; east or west; white, brown, black or yellow. This proposed redesign of the world has the planet and its people at the centre; it is built on the foundations of sustainability, inclusion, equality, equity and justice so that everyone on earth can enjoy peace and prosperity. It is not an idealist or utopian vision, but one with humanity at its core. This book is about reshaping the world to meet the future challenges of our planet and our people.

“At the end of the day, there are only two things that matter: Planet and People”

Sam Pitroda, with his decades of experience in the development and policy-making sector, writes this book to chart out his ideals with respect to the current issues the world is facing, and what mega mindset changes is required to channelize change into the way the world functions. On a global and national level, Pitroda supports his essays on several fundamental pillars—societal needs, economy, conservation, democracy, media and technology, sustainable development and industrialization.

As I could notice, Pitroda’s writing here is deeply analytical, and he majorly focuses on the anvils of polity and global history to talk about his measures of change. He speaks of how the world has evolved culturally and politically and has changed the overall interconnected human landscape in the process. Taking up a tone that is highly elaborative and therefore advisory, Pitroda’s voice here is simple and measured.

Quite contradictory to my expectation that the book will be too much of a bite than I can chew, ‘Redesign the world’ resulted in quite a vast, conclusive read for me. Pitroda doesn’t delve too deep in the measures of change, but touches upon all the sectors which needs to be worked upon. He speaks of innovation and large-scale transformations, showing the path where we can set off and create a better planet for the generations to come. There is an alarming call for global action throughout the book, paving the way for large, barrier-free discussions, not just keeping in mind national interests.

Just finished reading a book – Redesign the World – A Global Call to Action by 79-year-old Sam Pitroda. Sam has been a Visionary, Technocrat, Policy Maker, Innovator, and Inspirational Leader. He has helped India embrace technology and innovation. With several patents in his name, he advocates using technology to solve issues of the masses, primarily those at the bottom of the pyramid.

In the Book Redesign the World, Sam talks about how the world was designed 75 years ago when the UN organizations came into being after the end of World War II. He feels that was relevant then, however it has outlived its utility, and now is the time for the world powers to come together and redesign the world that is based on 5 pillars – Inclusion, Equality & Justice, New Economy, Sustainability, and Non-violence. This new design of the world order should lead to prosperity and peace.

This stimulating read was conceived during the lockdown of 2020. In this book, Mr. Pitroda talks about reshaping the world to meet the challenges ahead and the need for starting a new global conversation to make this happen.
