When Taheesha Jones plans her business trip to Canada, she could never imagine how her world would be turned upside down overnight. While her family is held hostage, she must drive to Winnipeg, Canada, with a stranger sitting beside her. Will she ever see her family again? Or, her workmate, Maggie? How does this young man plan on crossing the border with her? Who does she say he is? What if she panics? Meanwhile, Frank Mantelli, small-time crook and dreamer, is certain he is on his way to becoming a millionaire. One job. One package. One border crossing. What could go wrong?
"I'm not sure when someone decides to become a writer. I was once asked why I started and I said, 'I was tired of reading so decided to start writing!' Some dream about it but never do it and others are foolish enough to try. I have always loved Daphne DuMaurier's quote: 'Writers should be read and not seen or heard.' I loved the thought of writing but having anonymity at the same time. I doubt that can be achieved in today's world. I write for the pleasure of writing and I share it because I hope others will find joy in reading it."
Author Sharon Mierke’s well-written, fast-paced, unpredictable nail-biter draws the reader in before Taheesha Jones backs out of her driveway with a stranger in the passenger seat. Narrated by Bill Best, undercover agent working as a crime boss’s accountant, the reader is held hostage in the back seat of Taheesha’s car along a routine business trip to Canada while her family is held hostage at home.
The story takes many unpredictable turns up until the sucker-punch ending.
The author profiles each character germane to the story so the reader knows them very well: Taheesha Jones; her husband, Isaac; their two children, Vanessa and Kyle; co-worker, Maggie. Then, there’s the underworld element of assorted unsavory characters: Frank Mantelli, a small-time crook with big dreams; Deke, a dangerous loser; Benny Friedman, a chameleon; Dayton Lewis, soon-retired policeman and his sidekick, Patrick Lanigan. There's Marc Markham, the spoiled rich kid, grandson of Markham Holdings’ owner, who is the catalyst fueling the entire debacle.
Every character plays an intricate role along this off-the-beaten-path crime fiction I consider a must-read. It’s not about guessing the perps. Finding out what’s inside the envelope will blow your mind.
