A YA book with a mystery aspect and political intrigue, set in a boarding school with a fun and diverse cast of characters? Sign me up.
This book didn’t feel like 400+ pages, it was so engaging I literally ended up flying through it. The narrative is really quick paced with a plot I’ve never really seen tackled in a book before, which made it an interesting read. For a book with subtle perspective changes, I actually found myself caring about both perspectives in the book - it actually had side characters I was interested in and was rooting for. I enjoyed the side plotlines just as well as the main focus of the story, which is rarely the case for me.
The characters in here were so lovely and funny - the dialogue and chats they have in here was definitely a highlight. Though a lot of the book was quite serious and a bit darker, there were some real moments of lightheartedness and witty banter which I thought made for a good balance and made me laugh several times. I loved them all and their interactions were really fun to read.
I think because of the nature of the subject matter and how the danger of the situation is explored in here, that the PTSD could’ve been a bit more pronounced. It’s brought up quite a bit in the beginning but we never properly explore it with Gray which I would’ve loved as it’s clearly a big part of how she is and the way she acts. I liked the inclusion of it though - a lot of books put their characters through a lot and then forget it probably has long lasting effects on them so it’s nice to see it acknowledged.
Another aspect I adored was the female friendships in and how they developed throughout the story. Having characters mature enough to speak to each other and sort their differences out in order to work together and have a positive relationship? Hell yeah. And if you want a book with romance but not romance-focused, I think this has that balance perfected. It was super sweet and I liked watching the development, despite the fact I would’ve loved more scenes between just the two of them so we could really see that develop.
It gives me STAGS vibes if STAGS was more blatantly political and had more impending danger. I liked it.
Positive thoughts: - I enjoyed the multiple perspectives because a lot of early Night School was just Allie being confused what was going on and Gray is also incredibly confused what’s going on but through Julia’s and Allie’s perspectives we get a more varied look of what’s happening which I appreciate - I read this in just over 4 hours (during which I also watched a tennis match, so technically not even that long) so the intrigue was definitely there - The writing style works well for the story and is just overall enjoyable and easy to read without being oversimplified - just a good old fun time which is what I wanted and needed from this book
Less positive thoughts: - The gay side character feels a little too based on stereotypes (there’s a lot of other queer rep, specifically wlw characters which feel way more authentic) - The author really is just using the same character archetypes she used in Night School (I did like most of them but boy, they’re similar at times) - The set up for the last plot point and also the set up for the reveal at the end both didn’t make a lot of sense of me (I did see the last reveal coming but I think that’s less predictability and more actually good storytelling with foreshadowing and I don’t think it was intended to be a huge surprise)
Like all other books from C. J. Daugherty, I've read this one in few hours. Her books have some special charm that keeps my attention sticked to black letters on paper. I like "Codename firefly" more then previous book, because of simple reason - whole old "gang" is back! Ali, Carter, Rachel,... I missed them. I need more books, because this one didn't have enough of their povs 😂 I like that Daugherty had modern opinions and speaks with language of teens. However, it helped her become really popular at my country. I hope that her popularity will make people here continue translating her books, because I enjoy in them.
This was such a good read! Very unique. Gripping. Gray is in a boarding school which houses very special children from people who want to hurt them, kidnap them and the media wanting to capture them. Kids like Gray… The presidents daughter. But can the school handle these intruders? Is Grey safe? Is the security tight? They’ll soon find out… An action packed, tense, gripping and fast paced read. A real page turner that I devoured. A perfect YA read. Loved most of the characters including Greys friends. This would make a brilliant film or TV series. I’d love to see more of Grey & her friends. A read I won’t forget for a long time. Highly recommend. A well deserved four stars from me.
Codename Firefly is just like its predecessor a solid five-star read but I liked the first book a bit more. We’re now back at Cimmeria after that cliff-hanger from book one, though this book feels very isolated from the first one. Besides Gray having PTSD from the events there and the overarching plot, there are barely any connections. For example, the love interest Jake from book one is almost forgotten and definitely not relevant anymore.
The story follows different POVs which made me first worried that Gray’s POV would maybe be neglected but it luckily wasn’t. We for one follow her navigating through her new life at Cimmeria and finding out more about the murder plot around her mother. The other perspectives include Allie’s and Jules’/Julia’s, both trying to keep Gray safe. There was an interesting conflict between those two because of their past conflicts and their conflicting views on Gray’s safety. At least they talk it out in the end.
Like in all of Daugherty’s books I’ve read yet, the plot is quite intriguing. Here, it was especially the whole murder plot around Gray’s mother and the fact that there’s a spy at Cimmeria – again. Even though the Night School series takes place at the same setting, Codename Firefly had a really different vibe. This may be because Cimmeria has changed so much since Allie is the principal since she is not as strict with the rules, technical devices are now allowed and .
But still, there was much fanservice; for those who are interested: . I also love how consistent it is with Night School since the author remembered to include important events from the pasts, like Polish students coming to Cimmeria at the end of Endgame or the painting in the chapel still being destroyed.
I really loved the ending of the novel that felt like a true all-star meeting: . I only have two smaller critiques concerning the plot: First, it is at some points quite predictable. Second, the motivations of the villain are still a bit weak for my taste.
Gray’s character development was amazing as well. She does some stupid things throughout the novel but in the end, she realizes that she has to fight for what is important to her. But I’ll have to say that I’m not very fond of her new love interest, since she’s 16, he’s 19 and her bodyguard, meaning she’s dependent on him. Jules as another of the main characters got a more extensive backstory which I enjoyed so much as well. And her love story with ? Amazing.
I generally liked all the side characters, though I have to admit that the character constellations were quite similar to Night School but more diverse: Minal reminded me of Rachel, Dylan likes literature just like Carter, and Sophie is the cliché mean girl similar to Katie. I also sometimes had trouble to differentiate Minal and Maya, since both their names also start with a M and are a bit similar character-wise. Sadly, the characterization of the only autistic character is still cliché and people call her “crazy” – not talking about autism but about her as a person, but still.
Nevertheless, this book had all that I could wish for in a sequel to Number 10. There’s still so much potential and unanswered questions and I’m excited to find out where Daugherty will take us next!
Number 10 ➳ Number 10: ★★★★★ ➳ Codename Firefly: ★★★★★
It tears me apart to rate this book with two stars, because that wasn’t at all what I expected when I saw that there is a Night School 6. But honestly I was never more disappointed by a book than this one. If you don’t know the NS series, maybe it could be a 3 or 4 star read but with the knowledge of this masterpiece… This book is, in my opinion, incomparable to any of the NS books. Night School is my favourite book series of all time and this book kinda destroyed it for me. Of course it was a treat too see all my favourite characters again but not with this story. In my opinion their future should be up to everyone’s own fantasy. This book felt like a cheap remake of the exact same story with other, not nearly as well thought out, characters to me. I can’t believe that it is written by the same author, I expected so much more from her. I am deeply sorry to her, because I don’t want to disrespect her work in any way. Nevertheless, I need to pretend there is no Spinn Off and let Night School be Night School, the greatest series of all time!!!
If you are familiar with C.J. Daugherty's books then you will know that she has a knack of writing engaging and thoroughly enjoyable YA fiction. Her new Number 10 series is set in the same world as her Night School books, and the first book Number 10 introduced us to Prime Minister Jessica Langtry and her teenage daughter Gray. The second book in the series, Codename Firefly, goes a step further towards the Night School series, because in this book Gray finds herself as pupil at the exclusive Cimmeria Academy - which features in the Night School books.
Since Gray's mother became Prime Minister both of their lives have changed enormously, with their every move the subject of close scrutiny by the media, but it has also put them in danger by making them the targets of a Russian assassination plot. In an effort to provide some protection for Gray, she has been enrolled in the elite boarding school Cimmeria Academy, where her parents and security team believe she will be away from the prying eyes of the press and the chance that those with sinister intent will be able to get anywhere near her again. Of course, she has her own team of body guards on hand to make sure she remains safe behind the high walls of the Academy too, and they will be keeping an eye on her using her unique codename Firefly.
Gray starts to feel safe for the first time in many months, settling into school life, coming to terms with the events of Number 10, and making friends among the kind of students that know only too well what it means to live a high profile life. She also finds herself becoming close to an American student called Dylan, but she is really not sure whether she can trust him as he seems to know more than a bit too much about her and why she is here.
Unfortunately, it's not long before Gray's peace is shattered when Russian spies discover where she is laying low, and send a team of masked men to abduct her. Her security team manage to thwart their efforts more than once, but this is a foe determined to succeed. The constant feeling of danger is very unsettling and although she tries to carry on with the routine of school life, it is proving impossible to ignore the fact that her life is in danger once more. As the dark nights close in, Gray must learn how to protect herself from attack - especially since someone on the inside is helping the Russians in their deadly pursuit.
My favourite thing about these books is the way they make both domestic and world politics so accessible to a younger audience, and their success lies in the way this is done through the eyes of a teen herself, combining her very typical hopes, dreams, likes, dislikes and anxieties with real world danger and intrigue in the upper echelons of Downing Street, Whitehall and beyond. Gray herself is a lovely character, at times brave and bold, and at others shy and fearful - forming a very realistic mix of traits in any teenage girl trying to find her identity and forge a path in the world, which makes her highly relatable to teenage readers. In this second book, we get to see Gray making friends in a school environment, albeit a rather select set of classmates, bringing an a big dollop of threads in the coming of age vein, and we also get an intriguing glimpse behind the faces of her security team, which broadens the range of themes explored in the story nicely.
I can't go into too much in the way of detail without giving the game away, but this is so much more than a tale of teenage angst. There is plenty here to get readers of all ages perching on the edge of their seats, with gripping storylines that include elements of danger, conspiracy and mystery - all of which provide wide appeal and actually make these great books for you to read alongside your teens. The way Daugherty touches on many topical issues around relationships, divorce, sexuality, mental health and of course politics in an age appropriate way (perfect for readers aged 13 and up), incorporating them into a cracking page turner, gives plenty of opportunity to talk freely about subjects which might not always trip off the tongue too - a little school librarian tip for you there folks!
Back to school time seems like the best time to think about choosing some great new books for your teen readers, and I can highly recommend any of C.J. Daugherty's books as ones sure to please the most picky among them - but I am going to give a little extra shout for the Number 10 books too, because this is shaping up to be an absolute cracker of a series. I am really looking forward to the next one!
What a throwback. The nostalgia was so intense it felt like going home. It was so so nice to be back in Cimmeria - walking round the building I feel I know so well. Gray hopes she’s safe at Cimmeria but after seeing a man on the grounds that were meant to be impenetrable they realise the threat isn’t over. They also realise the new relaxed rules at Cimmeria won’t suffice to keep her safe- I was so sad when they first arrived and they were still allowed phones and makeup etc- I used to find one of the joys of Cimmeria how cut off from the world it was. Anyhoo, they divize a plot to try and find evidence that the deputy prime minister (John ashford) is the one trying to get gray killed at the winter ball. And so to be able to protect themselves, night school must begin again (yay!). They train for roughly 2 weeks I think- during which time it actually inspired me to go for a run! I love hearing about the training and them trying to fit it around school work. I hope the next book is based on the summer term so they have sit about outside on the open grass and explore the grounds in daylight (speaking of I loved the map being in the front of the book… even if I envisioned some elements being in other places). The winter ball comes around it all goes horribly wrong- gray gets captured, the prime minister and most of the other night school students do make it safely away (only night school students were invited and many guests were replaced my body guards and ex stsudents- oh my gawd the feels when Sylvia’s showed up and Allie had a crisis moment! I loved revisiting them all so so so much), there’s lots of fights and Julias (grays body guard) new potential girlfriend gets almost killed in the fights. I’m not sure how I felt about that romance- it seemed to jump out of nowhere and I feel like Julia was so head in the job she wouldn’t be distracted like that… I presumed Cameron was a double agent trying to distract her but I was wrong. Anyhoo, another student, Sophie, was seduced by a guard who turned out to be a double agent and tried to kill her. In the end they were all pretty battered but all survived. John ashford wasn’t arrested - there wasn’t enough evidence. It also turned out that Dylan (the budding romance character with gray) was a body guard who was 19 (she’s 16) placed in the school to protect her and they fell for each other! Eeek!! I enjoyed the book. I slightly felt like , and don’t hate me, one character should have died in the fight. It felt slightly like Cameron was brought back to life at the end for no apparent reason really… I think it could have been some dramatic character development for Julia if she didn’t survive. I also hope in the next book they sneak about on the roofs again- I loved that x

Codename Firefly by C.J. Daugherty is the 2nd book in her Number 10 series, which is a spin off of her Night School series. I did not realize this was the 2nd book in this series, but was happy that this read very well without having read the first book. Gray Langtry, our heroine, is the daughter of the British Prime Minster, and her life, as well as her mother’s is in danger, as they are targets of assassination plots by a terrorist organization.
Gray survived previous attempts on her life (first book), and now is sent with her bodyguard, Julia to an elite boarding school that is known for their security (Cimmeria Academy). Besides Julia, the school has other bodyguards, with high walls, gates and cameras, which gives the vibe that Gray, and many school mates (political families) are very safe. Allie (heroine from Night School) is now the headmistress, and she is determined to protect Gray and the other students. Allie and Julia do not get along at first, since they knew each other in the previous books, but when things get dangerous, everyone must work together to protect Gray, against the attacks.
What follows is an exciting, fast paced, action packed thriller, with Gray’s life constantly in danger. I loved Julia, as she was a terrific bodyguard, as well as many of those who came to help (from Night School), Allie, Chase, Zoe, Cameron, etc. I really did enjoy Gray’s interaction with other students, especially those who were in similar situations, but not currently targeted, like Gray. I also liked Dylan, who was American, and seemed to stick closely to Gray, with both feeling an immediate attraction. I look forward to their romance heating up in future books.
Codename Firefly was very well written by C.J. Daugherty, and exciting and tense from start to finish, with a few twists along the way. To tell too much more would be spoilers, and I think you should read it from the beginning. Codename Firefly had me on the edge of my seat often, as it was a captivating adventure, especially with the constant attacks and lives on the line. I suggest you read this Codename Firefly. I for one will look into reading more from C.J. Daugherty.

Sehr sehr schade. Lieben Gruß Sonja/Shaaniel
Unless it’s fantasy, I don’t usually read much YA novels, but last year I took part in the blog tour for Number 10, the first book of this wonderful series, initially simply because I love the author’s adult novels (written under the name Christi Daugherty). As I expected, I also enjoyed her YA novel, so when I was asked if I wanted to take part in the blog tour for the sequel, Codename Firefly, I didn’t think twice before gladly accepting.
The protagonist of this series is Gray Langtry. She is a sixteen-year-old girl, but she is not any normal girl. She is the only daughter of England’s Prime Minister. In Number 10, she barely survived a terrorist attack so now she is attending Cimmeria Academy where it is believed she will be safe. However, a terrorist group is still after her to get to her mother and they are ready to do anything to get their hands on her. The security at the school is high and Gray’s own bodyguards are more than capable, so how do intruders keep getting into the school?
Gray is a fantastic well-drawn character and I really like her. She wishes for a normal life of school and going out with friends, but, as the Prime Minister’s daughter, she knows she will never have one. She is struggling with her fears following the events in Number 10, however she’s is determined to not let the bad guys win. So, after a slightly rough beginning at Cimmeria Academy, we see Gray make a few friends, make an enemy out of the most popular student, growing a crush on another student, sneak out of the school in the middle of the night for a small adventure… essentially trying to have a kind of regular life, even if this means having a team of bodyguards around her.
The story is intriguing and suspenseful, and I love the English college life with which I fell in love when I was younger and reading Harry Potter (although here there are dangerous men with guns and knives and not wands). I really enjoyed Codename Firefly and I am already looking forward to the sequel to see what happens next.
“Assassins are hunting the daughter of the Prime Minister…”
Being the daughter of the prime minister is no easy feat and ever since her mother was sworn into office, Gray has found herself, along with her mother, targets of a Russian assassination plot! When there is an attempt of Gray’s life, she is sent to a boarding school that is meant to be a safe haven for children of the elite. But will its high walls, locked gates and personal bodyguards be enough to keep Gray safe?
Codename Firefly is the second instalment in the Night School series and whilst I have not had the pleasure of reading the first book, I had no trouble in following along here. It has been very well executed and is full of mystery, suspense and political intrigue. I loved the style of writing, which is so vivid, I could actually see it playing out on the small screen. I also really enjoyed the characters who are also all brought to life so well.
I don’t normally read these types of stories but its plot had me intrigued when I was given the opportunity to read it and I was pleasantly surprised as to how much I enjoyed it. My first book by C.J. Daugherty, I would definitely read more from her. If you are a fan of young adult books, I recommend you checking this one out.
This is an excellent sequel to the impactful and intriguing Number 10, which I enjoyed despite being considerably older than the Teen/Young Adult audience this series is aimed at.
Gray, target for the paparazzi, and terrorists is a resident at an exclusive boarding school renowned for keeping dependants of VIPS safe and secure. This book explores her adventures and relationships and the conspiracy that threatens the prime minister her mother.
It's a balance of coming of age and political thriller that delivers an intriguing, insightful story.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher via Midas PR in return for an honest review.
I got into CJ Daugherty's books while reading the Harper McClain mysteries (excellent, by the way!). Number 10 was the first YA book I'd read from Daugherty, and I've been waiting eagerly for the sequel since I binge-read Number 10 in one weekend. Codename Firefly does not disappoint! This time around, I needed to experience it through Audible books, as I have a long commute to work. I've never been so happy to sit in traffic. I must be an old romantic because my favorite parts were Gray's swoon-tense scenes with Dillon. If you or your teen haven't read CJ Daugherty yet, you absolutely should.
