I will say this is one of my favorites in the Sons of Chance Series.

Wyatt Locke grew up in San Francisco - he is an adventure guide, definitely not a cowboy. What brings Wyatt to the Last Chance ranch is the desire to get to know his half-brother, Jack. The previous summer Wyatt came to meet Jack and the reception he received was decidedly cool, last time he came without an invitation, and here he is a year later doing it again. Wyatt and his twin brother practically raised themselves; he hopes this will lead to the type of family he has always craved.

A strong summer storm is coming through the area as he is driving to the ranch, on the side of the road he finds Olivia Sedgewick in her vehicle stuck in a ditch. Olivia is on her way to Last Chance to give the ladies of the ranch a night of beauty. Bad timing on Wyatt's part - all the men on the ranch are at a cattle auction for the weekend. He might not be a cowboy, but Wyatt is not going to leave a bunch of women to fend for themselves with the power knocked out.

There was immediate sizzle between Wyatt and Olivia. I really liked them as a couple. And I LOVED having the women of Last Chance Ranch featured prominently in this book. Lot's of girl talk. The scene where the women ask Wyatt to explain a man's logic was priceless.

"Whew," Josie chance, Jack's wife, flipped her long blond braid over her shoulder. "Don't anybody tell Jack I said so, but that guy's hot. I had no idea. Jack just said he was a typical hiker type with sandy-colored hair"
"I wish I could have snapped off a couple of shots before Sarah dragged him away"

This is a great quick read if you like cowboys and like to laugh! I have read the whole series, and have enjoyed everyone. If you have not ventured to the Last Chance Ranch before, this is the perfect book to start with, all necessary backstories are explained.

This was a quick, light read. It stayed at 2 stars for me because it was more simplistic than I would have liked. Wyatt and Olivia hit if off immediately and then engage in sexual banter the whole rest of the book - when they're not busy getting it on, that is. While I don't mind a quick hook-up in a book, this one didn't sizzle enough for me because....I guess the circumstances weren't very exciting.
I was also disappointed in how little airtime the sibling discord got (between Jack Chance and Wyatt, his half brother). It wasn't believable that they worked out their major conflict in less than a day, after some stern words from the women in their lives.
Also, a last pet peeve...Olivia decided to go hiking in the wilderness...alone...for 45 minutes...without any water, really? Oh, and after hiking previously for 45 minutes without water the first thing she wants is...wine? Really?
I've enjoyed other books in this series so I'm sure I'll end up reading more of this author though!

Not my favorite Chance story. Was going to be my last but my Audible HP Blaze subscription has different ideas. This latest batch just is not as good as the original series IMHO.

Nice cover, though.

Beautician Olivia has been engaged to three different men, but dropped them when they said horrid things about her eccentric father - so Wyatt is playing it cool around Olivia, even though he has condoms in his pocket. I loved this storyline, it was so enjoyable. This series is cool! 5☆

Count on a Cowboy
Previously published as The Long Road Home this is an insta-lust, insta-love romance. Wyatt returns unannounced to the Last Chance Ranch to have another try at a relationship with his half-brother, only to rescue a damsel in distress and find himself trapped with a group of women and babies undergoing beauty treatments!
A sweet and sexy romance with a cute Bassett hound named Rodney Dangerfield.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a re-release of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wyatt and Olivia’s story was fast and steamy, but covered a lot of ground in a few short days. Loved the conflict between him and Jack, and of course, Sarah’s stern mothering.

Count on a Cowboy, the seventh book in Vicki Lewis Thompson’s Sons of Chance series, witnesses the return of Wyatt Locke. Readers will remember that Ms. Thompson introduced Wyatt at the end of Cowboys Like Us and revealed that Wyatt is Jack Chance’s half-brother from his mother Diana. Diana abandoned Jack as a child so the news that she went on to raise his half-siblings unsettled him, and the meeting between the two brothers did not go particularly well. Despite this, Jack did leave open the idea that Wyatt could return to the Last Chance in the future. But when Wyatt finally does reappear, he finds that Jack is away on ranch business with the other men from the ranch. He also finds Olivia Sedgwick, local hair stylist, getting ready to pamper all the Chance women for a girls’ night. Wyatt and Olivia feel an immediate connection and quickly begin a very steamy affair. Wyatt soon realizes that he’d be happy to relocate if it means being with her. Unfortunately, Olivia has a few hang ups about commitment because of a series of failed engagements, forcing Wyatt to carefully explore his deepening feelings for Olivia. He doesn’t want to scare Olivia off and ruin any chance of future with her. But, all the while, Jack’s return looms over their relationship. If Jack can’t accept Wyatt in his life, moving to Shoshone won’t be possible for Wyatt, no matter how much in wants to be with Olivia.

Wyatt and Olivia have the steamy affair that Ms. Thompson’s readers should expect from her novels, but no romance novel gets to the happily-ever-after without a few obstacles. Obviously, Wyatt’s relationship with Jack presents a major roadblock for him and Olivia, but she brings her own issues to the relationship. I already mentioned that Olivia has had several failed engagements, primarily because her former partners couldn’t accept her eccentric father. Olivia still believes in marriage and wants to spend her life with someone, but she’s not going to let a man push her into a commitment before she’s sure that he will also love and respect her dad. I’ve read romances (including a couple by Ms. Thompson) where one character is vehemently opposed to marriage and the central tension between a couple is their different relationship goals, and I have enjoyed that storyline. But this novel twists that situation around. The immediate result is similar; Wyatt has to be careful not to move too fast and scare Olivia off. I love that Ms. Thompson creates a unique premise for Wyatt and Olivia’s relationship. She’s has a tremendous ability to keep her storylines fresh by offering these nuanced tweaks to familiar romance plots.

Of course, the other central relationship in Count on a Cowboy concerns Wyatt and Jack. Ms. Thompson lets the tension in this novel grow by not having Jack and Wyatt face off until towards the end of the book. Knowing that that confrontation was coming actual made me a little uncomfortable. That may not seem like a compliment, but that’s exactly how I mean it. I felt so invested in Wyatt’s happiness by the time Jack returned that I couldn’t help but feel what I imagined he would be feeling— the anxiety, the nerves, the uncertainty. I appreciate an author that has the ability to make me identify with a character that strongly.

I feel that Jack and Wyatt’s relationship offers a pretty valuable lesson. Quite understandably, neither of them have a particularly positive opinion of their mother. Jack’s jealous and hurt because Diana abandoned him but raised Wyatt and Rafe. Wyatt’s jealous that Jack didn’t have to deal with their mother’s drama and had a loving mother in Sarah. Unfortunately, neither of them can recognize or understand the other one’s position. They both insist on making it a competition over who Diana hurt the most. But their mother hurt both of them deeply, and they could have formed a bond sooner if they had taken the time to see the other one’s perspective. I feel that’s a pretty realistic flaw in many of us. We get so bogged down in our feelings, our opinions, our experiences that we lose sight of other people’s experiences. Too many times our failures to see things from someone else’s perspective keeps us from repairing existing relationships and forming new ones. Ms. Thompson, once again, conveys a useful life lesson through her characters’ actions.

I loved Count on a Cowboy and highly recommend it to other readers. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I received an ARC from the author, but that did not influence my review.

Wyatt Locke over a year learned the truth about him and his twin brother Rafe have half brother named Jack Chance. Wyatt reaches out to Jack but is rebuffed by him and anything to do with Diana their mother. Wyatt seeking to have better relationship with his brother heads to The Last Chance Ranch as surprise. Nothing is going the way Wyatt hoped Jack isn't home. The only bright spot Wyatt finds is Olivia Sedgewick. Olivia is stuck in a ditch prior to reaching The Last Chance Ranch for beauty night set up by Sarah Chance. Olivia is rescue by Wyatt and sparks fly between the two. Upon Jack's return, Jack orders Wyatt around and threatens him. Both exchange heated words and unwillingness to give an inch either. Olivia suggests camping to help Wyatt find some peace and focus. Can the two brothers make up? How important will Olivia become to Wyatt? Your answers await you in Long Road Home.

Wyatt's easygoing manner belies an understated strength and determination. Olivia brightens up the room just by her presence. Together they create heat and passion that stuns them both. Jack uneasiness about Diana leaves little room for acceptance of Wyatt. I can hardly wait to see where this relationship goes.

Wyatt Locke has returned to the Last Chance Ranch. Unannounced, and uncertain how his half brother will take this unexpected visit, Wyatt finds himself playing cowboy and waiting for Jack's homecoming. Finding Olivia Sedgewick stranded along the road to the ranch, he sweeps her in to his arms, and she ends up all the way in to his heart.

Olivia finds herself attracted to the very, very sexy Wyatt. Having already ended three engagements, she is not sure she can risk herself, or her eccentric father, and believe in his fulfilling her dreams.

Very well written. Just enough of the followup on everyone involved so you can feel the full story.

Wyatt Locke believes in second chances. Sure, meeting his half brother last year was a complete disaster—but blood is blood, right? Now Wyatt is returning to the Last Chance Ranch to try to make peace with a family he hardly knows….
Then he comes across beautician Olivia Sedgewick stranded on the side of the road.
As it turns out, most of the Chance clan is away for the weekend, and Olivia proves to be a very delicious and sexy distraction. But as his brother's return draws closer, Wyatt has to decide. Can he leave this cowboy life—and Olivia—behind? Or would the ranch be the setting of Wyatt's last stand? 5 stars.

“Count on a Cowboy” might be my favorite book in the series so far -though it’s pretty close with “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” I’ve really liked the characters from the previous books and the families overlapped in different ways, so I was thrilled that we got most of the women in one book, and for more than a quick “hi” here and there. I found myself genuinely laughing at loud during the “girls night” scenes. For the most part, I loved every about the characters and the story. Such an enjoyable read.

Wyatt is Jack's half-brother and wants to get to know him. Out of the blue he shows up to the ranch to meet him. That opened the door a year ago and now he's back. Lucky for him he saves Olivia Sedgewick on his way back to the ranch. He proves he can be the white knight and the right guy for her.
Love the sweet ending when Rodney tracks her down with Jack's help. The guys have a lot to work out but I'm sure they will with time.
Good little story.

Quick fun read in the Sons of Chance series. I’m a little behind but that didn’t hold me back from enjoying the story. I enjoyed the connection between Wyatt and Olivia. The sparks from their first meeting were intense. The conflict between Wyatt and Jake pulled the story but Olivia and Wyatt closed it off very well. Great introduction to the next in the series, it will be fun to continue with the next book!

3.5/5

No doubt Thompson is a great story teller.
I enjoyed how she wrote Rodney in this book.
The damsel in distress was also a good idea in the storm however I didn't really like a repeat of damsel in distress in the forest. I guess it was necessary though in order to bring the brothers together. I wish there was more of Grover, his character had a lot of potential.
Nonetheless, another great guilty pleasure book in the Chance Cowboy Series!

I usually love her books, but I have to say I was disappointed in this one. The usual steamy scenes were lacking here... and that was the primary reason I chose to read the book. IMHO, not quite up to the level of her earlier books (like the Nerd series- LOVED those!!).

This book was the perfect blend of romance and family from start to finish. Wyatt and Jack's reconciliation at the end was believable and relatable. Wyatt and Olivia were the perfect hero and heroines. I loved it.

Wyatt is a cutie and I was waiting for his book. A nice quick, sweetbread. However, the issues between Wyatt and Jack and how quickly and up realistically we're resolved fell a bit flat. Was lovely seeing all the characters for the Last Chance ranch though!

Worth a five star rating. Strong family and community stressed. Good character development with complex main characters. Love the dog interactions. Some sexual scenes but not a lot &not in a lot of depth.
