(no spoilers in the first half of the comment - there's a marker when they start)

This book pissed me off. I hate-read it to the end in one sitting. I NEVER write reviews, but I can't believe this book has such good ratings. It's not...bad....but it's not a 4-star imo.

The first half drags oon, and oooon, and oooooon, with cheesy "if she ever finds out my terrible secret.....my whole life will crumble down......no. I will never tell her what happened that fateful night..." And this is fine, right, who doesn't like some good old suspense building. But then it happens twenty more fucking times. If you need that just to keep your reader interested...

The book is structured in short chapters, switching POVs back and forth between the two leads - and this, the convoluted plot, and the non-chronological order meant constantly breaking immersion trying to figure out who, and when, is speaking.

The first-person internal monologues seemed to repeat the same thing over and over again (mostly about their respective terrible secret, and how terrible it would be if their respective terrible secret was found out), in a loop, until the plot advanced to the next "step". Then the monologue changed to reflect the new developements - and so on. It felt clunky, less like natural character developement and more like "Okay, Plotpoint X occured. Program all characters to advance to Step 3 of Character Arc Module".

By the middle of the book I hadn't formed a meaningful emotional bond to any of the characters. They felt completely one dimensional, to the point of it being comical; and pretty unlikeable to boot. Also, the fact that the author pulls the "very important confession gets interrupted by something trivial" rom-com trope, LIKE THREE SEPARATE TIMES, made me fume. Other characters never seem to read the room, despite the protags' obvious distress at what they're about to reveal.

SPOILERS ////

Also, in the end, why not add a flippant, undeveloped little vestigial limb of a plotline, one that COMPLETELY UNDERMINES THE ACTUAL ENDING? It seems to want to have its cake and eat it too - a character study that showcases the human tendency to deceive, but also somehow a nice cozy happy ending (for characters that dont really deserve it, and have learnt nothing over the course of the book)....?

Also, such strange inconsistencies between what the characters say and what they do. I love my son so much, but also lets basically kidnap him and scare him by acting violently - with one worried line every once in a while, when the authors remember he's also supposed to be in this [extremely traumatising] scene. My cousin is a fake, horrible person who betrayed me and never cared for me, doesnt care for her son, and is a debilitating narcissisist - but like, let's invite her for dinner! Speaking of, the cousin, who presumably was obsessed with Justin to the point of insisting they're in love and need to be a family, is suddenly ok with this arrangement of being their dinner guest, and letting her & Justin's baby be mothered by another woman. Depressed, low-self worth Justin, who keeps stating everyone would be better off without him and blaming himself for what happened, is inexplicably and inexorably hell-bent on harassing his ex that he LEFT IN THE DIRT WITH A KID ON THE WAY FOR TWO YEARS, insisting he needs to be back with his family and he actually loves her.

In other words, what the fuck.

3.5 STARS

Grace and Justin have been together for 10 years. Most of that that, they've been trying to get pregnant, but her history of anorexia makes it very difficult.

Miracle of miracles, she becomes pregnant. She knows how happy Justin will be .. until she tells him the news. He grabs his coat, walks out and the door and she never sees him again ...

Until 2 years later when Grace and baby Daniel accidentally runs into him. Justin wants desperately to be back with Grace and the baby, but doesn't dare because if he tells why he left and never returned, she will leave and he will never see his son again.

But, then Grace also has a secret .. one that will destroy Justin.

One thing is certain: their secrets will be exposed. And when they are, neither Grace nor Justin will be prepared for what follows . . .

The story is told by alternate chapters with points of view from both Grace and Justin. There are plenty of compelling twists and turns to follow. You know there are lies, some small, some huge ... who's lying and why? It's a riveting look at dysfunctional families, and relationships. I'm a little ambivalent about the ending. I was looking for a big bang, and although it was okay, it lacked that punch I was looking for.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I’ve read Gemma’s books before and I love her twisty, turny plots packed full of shocking revelations. Our Little Lies is co-written with Joe Cawley but thankfully it’s a seamless partnership that has produced a great psychological thriller that grabbed me from the very first page!

At the start of Our Little Lies, we know that something terrible has happened but we aren’t quite sure what or why. Grace and Justin have a lot of history but what has happened to them both to get to this point? We find out that two years previously Justin disappeared from Grace’s life the very day she finally found out she was pregnant with their much longed for baby. And now he’s back on the scene but he still refuses to explain why. Unfortunately, he’s not the only one with secrets…

There are some really shocking twists in Our Little Lies and they aren’t all at the end of the book either! And because of where it’s placed, I think the first twist really does an absolutely brilliant job of letting the reader know that this narrative may not be the most reliable source of information about Justin and Grace! After the first time of literally picking myself off the floor, the shocks just kept on coming! The authors have crafted such a clever and unique storyline with characters that aren’t always likeable and possibly don’t always make the best decisions but where would the fun be in that!

It’s not often that I’m left completely speechless by a book-I read so many that not much surprises me in the world of psychological thrillers-but I have to admit that I was left gobsmacked by the ending of Our Little Lies. But it was just the perfect end to this brilliant, breathtaking storyline told by fresh and exciting new voices. I hope Gemma and Joe collaborate again in the future as they have complimented each others perfectly with their debut, delivering a gripping storyline from start to finish.

Highly recommended by me!

So the positives I did enjoy the book and loved the ending - so perfect. Great short chapters and the characters were totally developed and loved the red herrings throughout the book.

What I struggled with is the actual scenorio of meeting up after two years and it took me a while to get over that. I do get that it is a necessary plot device.

I was given an advance copy by bloodhound books but the review is entirely my own.

I must say this story wasn't what I was expecting! It is about a love lost, a love hidden, and many lies along the way. It is told from different points of view from the characters, but the biggest surprise is revealed along the way. A very well-written story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This was an entertaining book about how tangled lives become when people lie and how those lies affect other lives. I was a little disappointed with the ending, the build up was such that I was expecting a much more startling reveal. Having said that it passed a few pleasurable hours.

Gemma Metcalfe and Joe Cawley have collaborated and put together a fast paced and twist filled book in “Our Little Lies”.
Written in two points of view - Grace and Justin - we learn many secrets and lies that return to haunt them.
The chapters are short, yet packed with tension and suspense.
A great read with an even bigger secret to shock the reader on the last page….!

This was written in such a specifically tension-building way... I couldn't stop reading. I have mixed feelings about the ending... but I won't give it away. I really enjoyed the story and the carefully laid breadcrumbs.

Storyline was pretty slow through the first 50-75% of the book. Definitely struggled to get invested. Ending was super good, just wish there had been a little more throughout the book.

Content warnings for this book: Detailed discussions of eating disorders and suicidal ideation.

For a thriller, I found this book boring, sloppy, and difficult to be interested in.

The main characters felt one-dimensional, and I couldn’t find any reason to care about them or what happened to them at all. Grace came closest to being somewhat interesting, but she was ultimately as flat and meaningless as the other characters. The sweet baby, Daniel, was the only one I could root for, because, well, he is an innocent baby born into a relatively horrendous family.

The story was maddeningly slow for the first half of the book. The second half was easier to get through, but it was ultimately very unsatisfying.

There was good writing in this book, but it felt out of place, like it should have been in a different book, in a different genre. Most of the book is written in repetitive internal dialogue, which I think is the authors’ combined strength—but the action parts felt almost completely empty and weightless as they unfolded. Nothing ever made any sense.

The ending felt almost campy or completely random, neither of which fit the morose, introspective mood of the rest of the book. I thought maybe it was going somewhere, and it just never did. Andrew, Grandpa, and Garth especially felt like characters created solely to fill up a flimsy cast of suspects and/or motives.

If you are looking for a thriller to gobble up, this simply is not it. Clearly, others would disagree, but I found this book to be an unsatisfying read, as a thriller.

Stupid Ending

This book had a lot of promise but in the end was just stupid. Grace is annoying and kept up a ridiculous lie for way too long. The ending didn't make a ton of sense because several characters did things very uncharacteristic of themselves. And it makes zero sense that Grace would sleep with Rob after what he did to her and Justin. None of it made any sense at all really.

Do not read Our Little Lies unless you have some time set aside to read. You will not want to put the book down! The book is told in short, efficient chapters from the points-of-view of the two main characters, Grace and Justin. I loved the short chapters! They kept drawing me further and further into the book in one sitting.

This books contains so many fabulous facets: mystery, intrigue, mental health issues, dysfunctional family relationships, and love. I devoured it very quickly!

I was not thrilled with the ending as I thought it fell a little flat. There is a final twist. I am sure the question left unanswered was written by the authors to leave readers in suspense. I simply found myself saying, “seriously?”

There was also a past accident mentioned in the book numerous times. The perpetrator was never found. With the amount of times the occurrence was mentioned, I kept expecting a twist in the plot for us to learn who the perpetrator was, but that answer never came to light.

Even with the couple issues I had with the book, I still truly enjoyed it! It is one you definitely want to read!

A huge thank you to Bloodhound Books for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions above are my own.

I really enjoyed this book and read it in two sessions over a 24 hour period. The book is written from the PoV of two of the main characters, Grace and Justin, both of whom are damaged by events in their pasts. This really is a psychological thriller with a lot of red herrings that certainly had me fooled.

Briefly, after years of trying Grace is pregnant. But when she tells Justin his reaction isn’t what she expected. He runs away and she only sees him again, 2 years later, when she is at the beach with Daniel who is now 16 months old. Justin is enthralled and wants to be a Dad but Grace isn’t sure she can’t trust him. Both of them are harbouring dark secrets. Secrets that will hurt the other. But how can they move on without telling each other the truth.

I like that the story is told in short chapters. They kept me wanting more and I kept turning the page for it. The story is about love, deception, mental health issues and a host of secrets all popped into a bubbling cauldron of lies. The ending wasn’t quite what I expected and there is a final twist that left me wanting to know a bit more but all in all an excellent read and 4.5⭐️

Wow what a rollercoaster, just when I thought I had something figured out I was blind sided and spun in a completely different direction. A really well written storyline that had characters you either had empathy for or actually disliked immensely, I mostly leaned to dislike, but this for me is not a bad thing, I actually think it’s the showing of a good author(s) when you have feelings, whether good or bad about characters. I won’t write about the storyline as I feel this is the job of the blurb, but I will say a really good read.

I have read and enjoyed previous books by Gemma but this was my first where it has been written by two authors and I can honestly say I wasn’t disappointed.

I enjoyed the way the chapters were written from the main two characters, Grace and Justin’s point of view.

Totally gripping and lots of twists and turns and an unexpected ending.

I would totally recommend this book and look forward to future books by Gemma and Joe.

Really enjoyed this book. Was intriguing from the beginning and kept my interest from the start.

Found myself not wanting to stop reading until the twist hit and then I was knocked off my feet, and the twists just kept coming.

I found myself not able to stop grinning.

A superb book.

Recommended 4 stars from me.

Not the best writing, but I enjoyed the twists and turns and trying to guess what came next. Felt some of Justin’s emotions were restated several times….I got it the first time. Told from alternating points of view and time frames. Reviews have lots of mixed feelings about the ending. I liked it!

Grace bumps into Justin whilst out with baby Daniel. She is shocked to see him as the last time she saw him was two years ago, when she told him she was pregnant, before he bolted for the door.
They agree to meet, as Grace wants to know why Justin left her at such an important time in their relationship. The meeting leads to Grace both lying and keeping a big secret from Justin, which will have devastating consequences for them both.

This book has very short chapters, from the points of view of Grace and Justin. I really enjoyed reading this way as it was easy to follow the plot. The book is full of twists and turns, and although it is a slow burner this book builds up in pace and tension.

An entertaining plot and an enjoyable read.

I actually really enjoyed this book. I am one for a good mystery and this kept me guessing until the end. It was slow in the beginning and a couple times I had to put it down but as I got to the end I couldn’t stop. The twists really threw me through a loop! And the ending!! No worries- no spoilers here.

It is told in chapters based on two characters (Grace and Jason) as they have to confess their secrets while trying to help police figure out what happened..... Definitely recommend and give it a chance!

I enjoyed this book very much. It is written in chapters from the perspective of both Grace and Justin, who were a couple, until some news split them apart. Grace didn't understand at the time why, so when she sees Justin a couple of years later she is looking for answers and so is he.

There are lots of twists and turns and unexpected plot developments. Very enjoyable.

The book is written from the point of view of the two main protagonists, Grace and Justin.

With short chapters the suspense and tension carries throughout the book until the unexpected finale.

Both Grace and Justin tell so many lies to each other that is si hard for them to disentangle themselves from the fake reality created by those lies.

Well written story by the two authors that will keep you entertained till the end.

An interesting story written by two people telling their side of a very deceitful tale. When Justin disappears after hearing that Grace is pregnant with a long awaited child it becomes clear that something must be wrong. Justin has a secret from his past that he cannot confide in Grace. When Grace meets Justin 2 years later she also lies about the child Daniel. Is this lie told to get her own back and will she regret her actions?

This book had some suspense and harrowing tales that kept me wanting to find out the full story......and then I did, and it wasn't what I expected....dun dun dun. This book for all it's anxiety riddled, angst inducing story telling was a good read but my anticipation for the lies was a let down in the end. Not a bad book but not what I expected either.

What a quick fun read, I really enjoyed it. This was a great mystery/thriller that kept me hooked and surprised the whole time. I liked reading the varying viewpoints between the two characters. Some of the actions made by the characters were farfetched but it didn’t distract me enough to stop reading or enjoy the book. This is my first read by this author but I am now willing to check out some other of her books.

This is the first book I have read from these authors. I will admit I struggled with it at first and was disappointed as I really truly wanted it to be a book I just could not put down. I trudged on with it as I kept thinking there has to be something here. About 3/4 of the way through it picked up for me. I will admit that I am glad I did not give up on this one as the ending did surprise me. And not only did the ending surprise me but I did not pick up on any hints throughout unless there really weren't any.
Overall I will give it a 3 star as I think the beginning was slow and a little repetitive and I couldn't find a connection or any emotion to any of the characters.

I'm giving this 2 stars because, I'll admit, the twists got me. Didn't see them coming.

Listen, I will play devil's advocate for awful characters. Like, I will fight for Jenny in Forest Gump. Damaged people don't make the best decisions, but that is what makes them true to their circumstance. Not everyone is Cinderella, not everyone is sunshine in dark times.

But the amount of ICK I felt for both leads. I felt like shock value was prioritized over the characters actions. The girl keeps forgiving the absolutely, atrocious, things done against her. The guy is like I love you BUT ALSO YOU'RE SO UNTRUSTWORTHY EVEN THOUGH IM SUPPOSED TO BE RIDDLED WITH GUILT FOR ABANDONING YOU.

Plus I just felt that too many red herrings/twists were actually brushed over? Like, it stopped being important the moment it was out.

Maybe this was too much drama for me. On the drama scale, it's above the Mexican telenovelas I grew up with. It was a lot. It had me initially with the first twist, and I will always sympathize with mother characters. But it really was too much.
