The "What if?" line relaunches in the modern day Marvel Universe! I remember reading some of these as a kid, and they were always very hit or miss. Much the same is true here...
Highlights:
What if Flash Thompson became Spider-Man?
- An interesting start, and ultimately goes the way of Peter's Spidey, but shows that Flash would try to make more profit off of it.

What if the X-Men.... (a bunch of cyberspace computer characters)?
- I love the X-Men. This is not them, but instead a weird version where they have the .exe gene which allows them to manipulate virtual reality. Cable and Domino work together to try and stop Erik (Magneto) and try and keep Xavier's dream alive.... NOPE doesn't work for me.

What if Peter Parker became the Punisher?
- Very interesting tale that starts off with the typical origin of Spidey, but takes a turn when Peter decides to get revenge on Uncle Ben's killer. Shows some of his best fights and how they would turn out when he can kill the villains. Even sets up irony when Frank Castle is the one who gets the suit out of the trash can when Peter gives up the suit to settle down.

What if Marvel went metal with Ghost Rider?
- A very weird sort of spoof on the industry and how things work when they set up the origins of Ghost Rider as being part of a ritual enacted by a Latverian Death Metal band. I found myself laughing... reminded me of the whole "blood in the ink" from the KISS comics all those years ago.

What if Thor was raised by Frost Giants?
- Another good story in the collection. Basically takes the whole "Loki raised in Asgard, Thor tries to work with him and ends up becoming enemies and casts him out..." story we know, and flips it to make Thor the traitorous Asgardian who wants to stay with the powerful Frost Giants.

What if Magik became Sorcerer Supreme?
- This one seemed really all over the place. Doctor Strange was trying to teach Magik to become the Sorcerer Supreme, but it back fires. Didn't love the art, didn't love the story.

Despite the mediocre reception on this Volume, I look forward to seeing how the series will take off... AND really looking forward to the Disney+ animated series.
Semi-recommend.

1. 'What if Flash Thompson became Spider-Man?' - 3 stelle

2. 'What if the X-Men were .EXE/men?' - 2 stelle

3. 'What if Peter Parker became the Punisher?' - 2 stelle

4. 'What if Marvel Comics went Heavy Metal with Ghost Rider?' - 4 stars
"La DC fa un evento tutto sul metal? E allora lo facciamo anche noi". Però questo parla veramente di metal.

5. ‘What if Thor was raised by the Frost Giants?’ - 2 stars

6. ‘What if Magik became the Sorcerer Supreme?’ - 4 stars

Though this was a definite mixed bag, the couple of tales that I enjoyed made me realise that I should seek out more What If? stories from Marvel Comics.

What If? With Great Power is a collection of one-shot stories featuring iconic heroes in different scenarios that wouldn't work into their normal run and broader continuity. There is a story imagining high school bully Flash Thompson as Spider-Man, the X-Men being futuristic humans able to interact uniquely with cyberspace, Spider-Man adopting the Punisher persona with mini-guns attached to his webshooters, Ghost Rider trapped within a Heavy Metal nightmare, Thor being raised by Frost Giants and Hell-raised teen Magik becoming Sorcerer Supreme.

The stories that most appealed to me were focused on character development. Flashy gimmicks often draw my eye but I truly appreciate ones that put in extra effort to show how this fresh premise would alter the superhero personae we've come to know and taken for granted. The road not taken is always a fascinating thought experiment, but only when it radically changes character.

None of these stories are a waste of time but most of them failed to live up to my hopes of seeing a new side to the likes of Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and Dr Strange. Perhaps I'm expecting too much from a fun and imaginative miniseries but sometimes a writer's imagination could go further with a compelling idea.

As for the illustration, I found all artists served their respective stories very well, be it for a darker tone or something more fantastical. My personal favourites were Edwards and Milonogiannis who combined photo-realism with cartoony style to depict the two worlds of the .EXE/men story.

I recommend What If? With Great Power to Marvel readers looking for new takes on fan favourite characters.

Notable Stories

• Flash Thompson Became Spider-Man – a redemption arc for a vain and vicious webslinger.

• .EXE/men – a cyberpunk restyling of mutant lore, that makes perfect use of Cable and Domino.

• Thor Was Raised by Frost Giants – an epic reversing of origins and roles for Thor and Loki.

I feel like trying to review the book as a whole would be hard to do given that there are six stories that have nothing to do with each other. So I’ve decided to write some short thoughts about each story.

What If…

Flash Thompson was Spider-Man?
A solid story that uses the characters well in a world where Flash is Spidey. It proves that Spider-Man really needs the “with great power comes great responsibility” ideology because otherwise things can get a bit dark.

The X-Men
I’m not really sure what this section was trying to do. Could be an interesting cyberpunk story if it wasn’t forcing X-Men characters into it.

Peter Parker became the Punisher?
It turns out that even if he has the “great power, great responsibility” motto Spider-Man could get dark. This was a good What If but I kind of wish it just focused more on one aspect of his life instead of giving us a bullet pointed version of all the big events in Peter Parker’s life. Yes we see him get bitten, Uncle Ben’s death… again, the Green Goblin battle on the Bridge (you know the one). I don’t know how you could do this story without it being wider in scope than say the Flash Thompson version but it was still enjoying.

Marvel Comics Went Metal? With Ghost Rider
For the first half I was asking, “what’s the point of this?”
For the second half I was asking, “what the f**k?”
Seems about right for a story with this title.

Thor was raised by Frost Giants?
I liked this one a lot. It may have been full of names I struggled to say aloud but it seemed to be the most likely story out of the ones I’ve read in this collection so far.
If you only had to read one story in this collection I’d pick this one.

Magik became Sorcerer Supreme?
The art is certainly more interesting in this one… very Kirby-esque. And the cover page is my favourite of the lot. Simple but beautiful.
The story for the most part however… it’s fine. Nothing special. Not great but not terrible. Probably just a case of me not knowing much about either Strange or Magik in the comics.

Wow! This is the first comic book I've read and it was amazing!! All of the stories were so good!

What if Flash Thompson became spiderman: 4 stars
I really enjoyed this! I loved how in the end Flash stopped believing that he was a hero and gave himself up.

What if? The X-men: 3.5 stars
This was really cool too!! While the end was a bit confusing for me, I loved the "cyberspace" idea and the EXEs.

What if Peter Parker became the Punisher: 4 stars
I really liked this one! I loved how different Peter could become when he thought protecting his friends and family would mean defeating anyone who could threaten them. I also liked how in the end he saw that killing people wasn't making things better and gave up being spiderman and the punisher.

What if marvel comics went metal: 3 stars
This was a weird one for me. The end was very confusing and didn't really tell me what happened? I still quite enjoyed the plot but the other ones were definitely better.

What if Thor was raised by the Frost Giants: 4 stars
I loved how this was the complete opposite of the original version! I felt really bad for Loki and the ending was really cool.

What if Magik became Sorcerer Supreme: 5 stars
This was amazing! Even though I didn't know who Magik was at the beginning, I really enjoyed finding out who she was if she made different decisions. I loved how Doctor Strange helped her and in the end it made her strong enough to take over from him.

Overall these were all amazing!! I can't wait to read more comic books!

Collects WHAT IF? GHOST RIDER #1, WHAT IF? MAGIK #1, WHAT IF? SPIDER-MAN #1, WHAT IF? THE PUNISHER #1, WHAT IF? THOR #1, WHAT IF? X-MEN #1

Each of the issues in this collection are one-shot stand-alones, and when they're good, they're good. Unfortunately, when they're bad, they're bad. For me, the best ones were "Spider-Man," "Punisher," and "Thor." The other three, I could have lived without (although I can see the potential in the "X-Men" story).

In the "Spider-Man" story, Flash Thompson is the one that gets bitten by a radioactive spider. In the "Punisher" story, Peter Parker becomes the Punisher, but he also has his Spidey powers. In the "Thor" story, Thor is the one that gets adopted by a different family rather than Loki, so he grows up with the Ice Giants.

I didn't realize they made more What If? comics and tied it to the time when Nick Fury was the Watcher. He only really "hosts" one issue in this compilation, but it was a fun moment. Honestly, I still prefer What If? having a narrator versus just having the story unfold.

Flash Thompson as Spider-Man went as well as expected but didn't quite break new ground. Spider-Man as the Punisher (as indicated on the cover) was definitely more striking even if a little over the top. The cyberpunk Exe Men story for Cable and Domino was indulgently fun. Magik as Sorcerer Supreme took a while to build up and was still nice but not quite as powerful as a single-issue story.

A collection of Marvels What If? tales from 2018 including such ideas as Flash Thomson becoming Spider-Man and Peter Parker becoming the Punisher under the all-seeing eye of The Unseen, replacing previous series 'host' The Watcher who the former Nick Fury had killed in The Marvel Universe himself prior to becoming The Unseen! A variety of stories, not many hitting the heights of previous What If? tales and, in a couple of them, not really taking the series idea as it was meant to be, with wildly different worlds rather than a decisive event changing the path of the universe.

I bought this collection for the Leah Williams Magik issue. And it's as wonderful as I expected. Probably 5 stars on its own.

The rest of this collection? Meh. The Ghost Rider one is very weird, the two Spider-Man ones are boring, the Thor one ok and the cyberpunk X-Men similarly mediocre.

I don't regret reading any of them, but yeah, the Magik issue is the only one of these really worth reading.

Very mixed bag. Most weren’t good. The Flash Thompson story was the only highlight. The X-Men stories needed far more development than they got here. The Ghost Rider story with the MCU? What on earth was that nonsense? Great art but yurghhh those demons set off my trypophobia badly. I like the What If concept but these aren’t great.

Some decent stories and great artwork. However, nothing truly amazing. The best stories were the first and the last... What if Flash Thompson were Spiderman (but it felt like it was missing something) & What if Ilyana Rasputin became Sorcerer Supreme (but I know nothing about that character so, while interesting, it wasn't as impacting as it could have been.

3.25/5 this is tough because I love What If? books, and of the six stories in here 4 are solid. But the other two are frankly pretty bad and were very difficult to push through. Worth the read, but it’s far from a perfect collection.

Historias sueltas (SpiderFlash, X-Men Hackers, SpiderPunisher, Motorista Fantasma + Kiss, Thor gigante de hielo, Magik Hechicera Suprema). Le falta algo, no son relatos épicos.

Want to see a sequal for both Thor and Sorcerer Supreme. Or even a series. X-men on the other hand was kind of bad and I feel like every Flash Thompson is Spider-Man makes him a major fuck up

WHAT IF? SPIDER-MAN 1 -- 3*

WHAT IF? THE PUNISHER 1 -- 4*

WHAT IF? THOR 1 -- 4* This is my favourite of the three I bought. I did enjoy them all though and the art was great in all three.

Marvel's latest collection of alternative tales - exploring the concept of a small change of fate that goes on to shape very different versions of established charcters.

There's a decent selection of stories and characters here (Spider-man, Thor, X-Men, Ghost Rider, Magik) however, while they are all interesting enough ideas (apart from maybe the Ghost Rider one which seems more done for laughs), none of the stories really live up to their potential. They are resolved quickly and relatively positively, additionally it is only the first one (the Flash Thompson as Spider-man) that includes narration from Watcher stand in, 'the Unseen'. When the series started in the 70s it was Uatu the Watcher's moralising that would set the scene and round out the story, which seems a missed trick here. These are supposed to be a mix of cautionary tales and fan service, but that isnt really delivered. There is a variety of different art styles on show here too, but similarly to the writing nothing that blows you away.

What if !?

J'ai adoré la série animée What if ?
