Looking down at the familiar, pale and lifeless face floating in the salty waters of the marsh, her blood freezes. It’s a face she hasn’t seen for years, but used to know so well…
When Detective Casey White is called to a murder scene in the Outer Banks saltmarshes, she’s devastated to find the strangled body of her ex-husband—father of her missing daughter Hannah. And nearby, an older, unidentifiable body is buried too… but how are these bones linked to her ex?
Painful memories flood back as Casey desperately searches his apartment, surrounded by photos of them happy with their little girl. Finding a notepad with the name of the hospital where Hannah was last seen scrawled on it, Casey realizes her ex recently discovered something about their child’s disappearance. But who was trying to silence him?
Then forensics show the bones belong to a sweet young nurse who worked at the same hospital. Delving into hospital records, Casey is shocked to learn she once held Hannah as a little baby…
Her boss insists she can’t work such a personal investigation, but Casey is in too deep. Interviewing all the staff at the hospital, she’s sure one of the doctors is acting suspiciously… and that night, Casey wakes up barely able to breathe as flames devour her home.
Now she’s in the killer’s sights. To finally catch this twisted monster and learn what happened to her stolen girl, Casey will have to risk everything…
An absolutely unputdownable thriller that will have you gasping at the twists and turns. Fans of Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and Robert Dugoni will be completely addicted.

My Thoughts: I enjoyed this fifth book, The Memory Bones as much as the others in the series. Casey White is a great detective, being a determined, smart, and compassionate woman, though she carries emotional baggage. The other characters are also well created and developed, especially ex-sheriff, trustworthy and amiable Jericho Flynn. Casey and the team's interactions were interesting to read as they set about looking for the culprit(s) and I always enjoy a bit of Jericho. Set in Outer Banks, North Carolina the plot pacing was frenetic with plenty of action, and there was certainly no room for tedium or boredom. The story was fascinating and I revelled in the problematical investigation. Enthralling to the very end, I shall be watching out for the next in the series and I'm immensely keen to see where the talented B.R. Spangler takes things next. A highly entertaining and absorbing police procedural which I recommend without any hesitation.

Did someone say book 5 of the Casey White series?? Pub date 2/12/21 Thank you to netgalley, B R Spangler and Bookouture for the digital advanced copy of the memory bones in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
Casey and her team attend a suspicious death on the island, Casey is shocked to discover its Ronald. Unaware he had returned she can only assume his death is related to their missing daughter Hannah. So when more bodies start turning up she can't help but wonder if they are connected and if so how?
So much about this book I loved and too much to fit in one review. Let me start by saying if you haven't read books 1-4 stop reading this review and start reading them.! Sprangler has a way of writing that always has me hooked from page one. The way the prose is narrated is flawless often reading the chapters it feels like we are hearing a detailed report from Casey our detective friend and I love it! This series is one of my favourite and my investment in Casey finding her missing daughter has me in so many conspiracy theories it's that good! I found this installment we get to witness a different side to casry a softer side and also more determine than ever. She clearly has complex feelings towards her ex husbands death and it was great reading them without them being labeled.
Also her amazing team and partner are for ever present and I think I'm in love with Nichelle! I loved how all the secondary characters lives were progressing and really brought weight behind each of them.
The case this time was an interesting one involving ropes and games as a method of murder. I will say I felt they slow walked a little bit with what, to me, felt like an extremely obvious investigation but I didn't mind it was slow just mire build up. I laughed, gasped even cried whilst reading this installment and found myself re reading entire chapters to let ir sync in. It was just so well written and it had me on edge throughout with anticipation and it didn't let me down!!!
Honestly this is my favourite so far in the series so really should be rated 5+ as all prior recieved 5 stars from myself. If you love crime thrillers with interesting killings and an few twists then you will enjoy the memory bones. If you've read the prev books then you're already committed!! Dabs of Lisa Regan, Carla Kovach, Wendy Dranfield and Helen Phifer will love this series 5 stars

This is the second book that I have read by this author. It is also the fifth book in the 'Detective Casey White' series but can be read as a standalone. I have read the second book in this series 'The Innocent Girls' which I would recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its gorgeous cover, interesting title & intriguing blurb. I am also a fan of BR Spangler and if this book is half as good as 'The Innocent Girls' it is bound to be a great read. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and Robert Dugoni will be completely addicted '. I love Karin Slaughter and Lisa Gardner's books so it will be interesting to see if it lives up to this!! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 33 chapters which are short to medium in length so ideal to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
THE main protagonist in this book is Detective Casey White where she 'speaks' in first person dialogue . I always enjoy reading books written in first person more as it feels like I'm sitting across the table from them while they are telling their story or in the book next to them. We also read about others in different chapters in third person perspective.
This book is set in the USA 🇺🇸.
The way this book is written and the fantastic descriptions made me feel like I was right next Casey and going through the events with her.
The storyline is intriguing with the children being spared and invites being sent. There is also the side storyline of Casey trying to find her daughter throughout the book. I felt like I was on a roller-coaster when reading this with there being many ups, some slower parts and twists and turns throughout. I'm pleased to say I was completely surprised by who the perp so a huge congratulations to BR Spangler as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me as I've read so many crime books. However, although I did love the ending but because I read so many crime books I must say that I didn't think what happened was very realistic as I'm sure that what happened would have been revealed a long time a go when a certain person joined the force and submitted DNA. I'm also unsure on the likelihood of Casey being able to work the particular case due to being so personal to her. I don't want to say anymore than that as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. However, this is just on my research and I may be wrong. I still quite enjoyed the story and the main part with the Killers came as a surprise.
Although this is the fifth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I loved the broad range of characters and the fact that Casey is a strong female lead is definitely a bonus, being female myself I love crime novels with strong women. The characters were all realistic and their parts were 'played' well. I enjoyed meeting them again and look forward to meeting them again in the future although I'm quite sad that we won't hear much from two members of the team I'm very pleased for them, again I won't say more as not to spoil this for future readers.
This book can be read as a standalone but for a better picture where Casey's daughter and Ronald is concerned I would recommend reading the first book prior to this one.
The story was more of a slow burner although at times picking up, much of the action I found really kicked off at about 65% and got much more interesting. I also feel the cover complimented the story really well, this can be a downfall if it doesn't and the cover has no relevance with the book itself.
Overall a good slow burner that really hits full throttle further in and becomes filled with suspense, action and tension.
Genres covered include Suspense, Mystery, Romance, Thriller, , Hardboiled, Police procedural, Psychological thriller, Crime fiction and Noir fiction.
I would recommend this book to fans of the above and anyone who enjoys a unique storyline.

Finding the body of her ex-husband is not the only shocking thing that Detective Casey White discovers. Finding pictures of their long ago kidnapped daughter Hannah pasted all over his walls was almost too much to bear. When additional bones are discovered near his body, Casey is absolutely sure they are tied to the disappearance of their daughter. But how?
Casey strives to dig deeply into the connection of the discoveries, even though such a personal connection is no doubt a conflict of interest. However, the pain of loss regarding Hannah never leaves her and she plows ahead. With her lover Jericho by her side, Casey is determined to find answers, despite the danger that is certain to find its way to her. Indeed, things become quite hairy as Casey and Jericho soon find their lives literally almost snuffed away by a consuming fire, thus proving that Casey is getting too close to discovering what happened to Hannah - and as it turns out, possibly other babies.
What a thrilling story and an excellent addition to a compelling series! The previous book, The Crying House, left me wondering if Casey was getting closer to finding out what happened to Hannah. This book, The Memory Bones, carries that idea even further, and proves that Casey's doggedness never ever lets go, no matter how close to losing everything could happen. This story was captivating from the very start and kept me tapping my Kindle to see if this chapter in Casey's life would come to a close. I truly love this series and cannot wait to see what other exciting cases that she has in store to solve.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
What a dramatic read, right from the start, And with an ending that pulls on the strings of your heart. A very different and moving, emotional discovery That leads to unexpected, loving recovery.
When the body is found in the marshy Outer Bank Detective Casey White looked and her heart sank. The victim is her ex husband and he's been killed And discovering nearby skeletal remains leaves her chilled.
All the clues suggest her ex-husband was on the track To discover what happened to their child fifteen years back. He must have been getting close to finding the truth and so Someone decided he must go.
As the team piece together the various clues The killer obviously thinks they've nothing to lose Get ready for a fire, as the killer has her in his sights Maybe she'll discover what happened that dreadful night?
Such a moving story of loss and grief Finding what happened would be a relief But hidden away where the truth is concealed There's peril and more danger as secrets are revealed.
This crime thriller is also about family and friends About seeking to discover what happened in the end. The character interactions make them all seem so real And that ending is so absolutely full of the feels.
Such a superb series, one I highly recommend With detectives and a team that now feel like friends. This is the fifth book in this series and I say If you haven't already done so, read the first four without delay!
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.
Casey is called to a scene - in the woods. A naked body hog tied - with a birthmark Casey remembers but can't place. And then she sees his face - her ex husband Ronald. Shocked, Casey has no idea why he is in the Outer Banks and not his home, Philadelphia. Casey discovers Ronald was chasing another lead on their daughter's, Hannah, kidnapping case. Which leads to Rourke Hospital - and a missing nurse. I can't say anymore without giving anything away. Fast paced, intense, massively rewarding. Loved it!
This series gets better with every single book. And boy did the author put us through the ringer. I am really invested in the characters, Detective Casey White deserves a wee bit of peace.
Karen, Pam, Susan, Abby, Kathryn, Julia and I read this book at our beach vacation at Corolla Sept 2022. This is a detective story based in the Outer Banks with a serial murderer using Buxton Woods as his dumping ground. It is number 5 in the Casey White detective series by BR Spangler. I enjoyed this book, especially the fact that we all read it at the same time :) That made it fun! I loved the whole first part of the book up until the point of the fire. But, I became disappointed in the second half as I felt as it the author was just trying to hard to check the boxes of his genre instead of diving more into the what was going on with Casey. I want to know what was the breaking point that split up Casey and Ronald. Julia makes a point that maybe it was developed in an earlier book in the series. (?) This book had a lot of good detail about forensics, which I liked. Maybe an underlining theme is about parenting. Casey was really parenting her team....trying to get her people to move onto better jobs, trying to teach the job to a young Tracy, Ronald never did give up on finding Hannah, and ultimately a parent who totally abandoned her child as Stillwell did after her son was injured( damaged) and she used him in a murderous way. She threw him away. There was ALOT going on in this book and I feel that is a one piece of it was developed further( what was the deal with Gloria/her husband /the doctor/ the doctor's wife ) I would have liked in better. PS: there were some errors in editing which I do not like !
OMG! This book had my emotions all over the damn place. It's starts off with a random murder that we later discover is a nurse from Rouke Hospital and that she knew the killers in the prologue. It then switches to the present day where Casey and her team are investigating a murder that ends up being Casey's ex-husband. Turns out he was on the track to finding Hannah. Casey finished the investigation he started, and in the end, we finally found out Hannah is now going by Tracy Fields!! I totally freaking called that one, but I'm okay with it because I'm so freaking happy for them!! I can't wait to see what happens next.

This was one of my favourite books of the series so far. I loved the development with the Hannah investigation and what came up in this book (through the crimes) to help solve that. It was really clever how we remember from books ago that Hannah was found being left at Roarke, and then the links to Roarke hospital in this book. I am excited to keep contining.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Memory Bones, the fifth novel to feature Detective Casey White of the Outer Banks, North Carolina, Sheriff’s Office.
Casey is called to a murder scene and is horrified to discover that the victim is her ex-husband, father of her missing daughter, Hannah and he isn’t the only victim as they discover bones buried nearby. A note in his apartment mentions Rourke Hospital, the last place Hannah was seen alive, so Casey is determined to investigate.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Memory Bones, which is an absorbing read with some good twists. It is told from Casey’s first person point of view, so the reader gets an up close and personal view of not just the investigation, but also the tumult in Casey’s life.
The plot moves along at a fast clip with developments and reveals in every chapter and is ostensibly the hunt for a killer, but, as with the previous novels, it is really about Casey’s decades long search for her daughter, Hannah, who was abducted as a three year old. Needless to say, this case dovetails in with the search, although I definitely wasn’t expecting what transpires and will be very interested to learn how the author intends to take the series forward.
I found the plot absorbing with one exception. The method of killing involves ropes and knots and the novel gets quite repetitive on the subject, which is difficult for me as illness has robbed me of visualisation skills. I still have absolutely no idea how the murders happened and I almost broke my brain trying to understand. I hope that other readers have better luck. Otherwise the plot is easy to follow and entertaining.
I like Casey and her close knit team. They work well and are ever supportive of each other. Unfortunately there is a lot of change in this novel in that regard, so it will be a fresh start in any future novels.
The Memory Bones is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
A Finale. Without going *too* deep into spoiler territory, by the end of this book the long-running mythos surrounding Detective White achieves a resolution - and not only that, but several other character arcs seem to be wrapped up as well. So much so that this book ends feeling like a series finale - until you hit the author note at the back, confirming that the author *is* working on the next book in this series. Which means that this book isn't so much *series* finale as "season" finale, and I for one can't wait to see what else the author cooks up from here.
As to this particular tale, yet again Spangler manages to craft a fairly inventive way to murder, and yet again the mystery here is quite wide ranging and explosive - and based on at least one real world situation that I am aware of, that went on at least as long before it was detected. (Though to be clear, I am not aware of any murders happening in the real world variant to preserve the secret... though it is at least theoretically possible.)
But the real stars of this series are White and her team, and here they yet again step up and provide much of what makes this series so great. Yes, Spangler is solid on the mysteries and murders, but it is in this part, in developing the entire cast of characters and their relationships, that Spangler truly excels and indeed (possibly arguably) overcomes the limitations and perceptions of this genre. Very much recommended.
Detective Casey White has been living and working in the Outer Banks since a clue to her missing child's whereabouts drew her there. Divorced from Hannah’s dad after the kidnapping of their three-year-old daughter tore their marriage apart Casey has been searching alone ever since, or so she thought.
When a body is found on the saltmarshes of the Outer Banks, Casey is horrified to recognise it as that of her ex-husband, Ronald Haskin. Was he searching for Hannah without Casey’s knowledge or did he have another reason for being there?
As the body count rises information begins to emerge which leads the detectives to an almost unimaginable discovery and a group of people desperate to remain hidden at all costs. Casey is determined to avenge Ronald's death but when boyfriend Jericho and other members of her team are put in danger she knows everything she holds dear could disappear before she can finally fit it all together.
Wow! This is the fifth in B R Spangler's brilliant Casey White series and without spoilers it is almost impossible to comment on why I loved it so much. To enjoy it to its fullest however, it is best to have already read at least the first book.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a must read for fans of the series.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
I thought this was a very well written and engaging book and felt it got off to a great start and certainly grabbed and held my attention right from the beginning. Detective White investigates a murder where the victim has an old and very personal connection to her. When more bodies are found Casey and her team have their work cut out trying to solve the case. I really enjoyed this book, the characters are so likeable, believable and so realistically portrayed. An ongoing thread from the first book finally came to a conclusion here and gosh it was certainly worth waiting for. I loved the authors writing style and thought the story flowed really well and raced to a satisfying conclusion with all loose ends tied up nicely. Overall, a great fast paced and thrilling read with a very well thought out plot line and a book that certainly lived up to my expectations and didn’t disappoint in any way at all. I think this is the best book in this series so far and the author has really wrote a cracker of a book that was entertaining all the way through. I would highly recommend this book and series and look forward to the next one.
The fifth book in the Detective Casey White series and what a book! I don't even know if I can do this book justice with this review, but I shall do my best. If you think the synopsis sounds good, I would start from book one and read them in order to fully understand and appreciate this series. The detectives and the team are all superbly written as always. B.R Spangler has, throughout the series, developed the characters to the point they feel like they could be friends. Casey has a case to investigate, but it turns out a little too close to home for her. It seems that more and more things begin to unravel, and everything Casey thinks she knows begins to crumble away around her . As things become more and more suspicious, Casey finds herself in more danger than she could realise. This is the best book by this author yet. An explosive and heartbreaking story that didn't stop for a second. The pace I read this at I class as breakneck! I was on the edge of my seat as the red herrings and heart pounding moments just kept on coming. My heart truly broke for Casey and I felt so connected to her. This is a story you need to make time for...because you definitely won't want to put it down all.
Wow! Double wow! Triple wow! This was such an amazing book!
It had me in it’s claws from the very beginning and it was wonderful, harsh, heartbreaking and heart warming at the same time. My heart and head went through so many emotions here. It was just crazy.
People do a lot for money, but sometimes I really cannot get it in my head how far they would go. Do they even care how much pain they can cause? Maybe they feel less guilty because on the other hand they make people happy? No, I don’t think they are able to feel anything. They only thing they see are big fat dollar signs…
Casey and her team have a tough nut the size of a coconut to crack and more than once they find themselves in very dire situations and more than once it’s touch and go. They work together as a very well oiled machine and the culprits really don’t stand a chance. They can run, but they will get caught without a doubt.
I shed a few tears. Were they happy ones? Sad ones? Or maybe a bit of both? I wonder which ones you will shed. 😊
The Memory Bones by BR Spangler is another excellent addition to the Detective Casey White series. This particular story was, I thought, particularly well done, it both had twists and turns as well as elements that propelled the multi-volume arc of Casey.
As is often the case with Spangler's fiction this book fits very well into both the mystery and thriller genres without going so far into either that readers who prefer one over the other will be turned off. While I would stop just short of saying this is character-driven I do think the well-rounded characters is what makes the story work.
Because of my feeling about the value of the characters I think reading this after having read the other books in the series would be the ideal thing. I don't, however, think it is necessary since what the reader needs to know is touched on so new readers won't be left behind. Just be prepared that if you read this before the others there may be some resolutions in this book that are still questions in the others.
Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.
The Memory Bones is book 5 of the series, have I read the other book? No. Do I feel like I was missing vital parts to the series? No, little things were filled in along the way.
Mr Spangler certainty knows how to set a scene, even without us actually being there! The salt, the heat, the flies and to some extent the smell 🤢. The detail in which the crime scenes were written really had me feeling part of the story, some points a little too much….. I’ve never held my breath as much while reading a book.
I adore our main character, Casey. Even though I’ve only read the one book I felt like she had lived some harrowing times, and if this book is anything to go by I can’t wait to see what I’ve been missing. I liked how she interacted with her team, guiding them, letting them take the lead and showing them how to get the job done instead of taking over everything. I especially liked Nichelle for multiple reasons (read the book!).
The Memory Bones is action packed with plenty of dark corners that set your mind racing, it’s definitely one to have at the top of your TBR list!!
The Memory Bones is an extremely well-written and brilliantly descriptive police procedure. That sees Detective Casey White work to solve a murder that hits close to home whilst hoping to at last find out what happened to her daughter Hannah who was kidnapped from her front yard in Philadelphia more than fifteen years ago and then later seen outside a hospital in the Outer Banks.
And with a great investigative team and a compelling storyline full of twists and surprises that easily kept me guessing I was hooked throughout and I'm glad that even though the big mystery in this series has been solved, there is still more to come, and I can't wait to return to Casey, Jericho and the rest of the team in the Outer Banks in 2022.
Would happily recommend.

Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is the fifth book of Detective Casey White Series. It's as much as better as the others in the series. This series gets better with every single book. This is a police procedural / murder mystery. There is a lot of danger for our heroine and those around her. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first to last page. This crime thriller is also about family and friends about seeking to discover what happened in the end. The character interactions make them all seem so real and that ending is so absolutely full of the feels. This is part of an ongoing series set around this detective. I will certainly be reading the others. I’m looking forward to Casey’s next adventure both professionally and personally. It deserves ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Highly recommend.
Detective Casey White is called to the scene where someone found a dead body. When she sees the body, Casey is stunned--it's her ex-husband, Ronald. But who killed him and why. And what was he doing in the Outer Banks when he lives in Philadelphia--and does it have anything to do with their missing daughter Hannah? Casey finds clues that Ronald had found information on what happened to their daughter. When a fire destroys her boyfriend Jericho's house, and nearly kills them both, Casey is sure what Ronal found got him killed and she needs to find out what he found and hopefully finally find Hannah.
Yet again I jump midstream into a fantastic series. This is my first Casey White mystery, but it won’t be my last. I was drawn to the series initially because Of it’s location in the Outer Banks. I was also intrigued by the plot. Will Casey ever discover what happened to her kidnapped daughter? The story is fast paced and dangerous. Murders, arson, money, revenge, and retribution. I was able to gather enough of Casey’s backstory to keep up with the story line. I liked her team and was sad that it was changing. A major revelation comes in this story. I am eager to read the next book! Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance read.
We have reached book #5 in the Detective Casey White series, and once again Casey and team are determined to solve the case. This time, Casey is called to the scene of a suspected murder. What she finds changes the course of her life. The momentum continues in this book and the hits just keep on coming for Casey and team… sometimes hitting a bit too close to home. While you don’t need to read the full series to enjoy this book by far you will get more from the books if you start from book #1.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the opportunity to read. Looking forward to the adventures in the next book.
I breezed through this one a lot quicker than the last, mainly because I could feel the mystery behind Hannah coming to a close. It's crazy and unbelievable what all Casey has been through to finally get to this point, but it's also great. I don't think she'll have much issue growing a relationship with Hannah/Tracey, considering they were already growing close to begin with. I can't help but wonder what comes next. Casey's team is being promoted and hired elsewhere, it makes me curious to know what's in store. It also makes me worry my interest will wane - but I guess I'll have to keep reading to see!
